Ask Alison: Proper Pants Lengths to Pair with Shoes

In today’s Ask Alison, I’m answering a question submitted by one of the Pretties about how to pair up fall’s shoe trends with pants.

Hey Alison, any chance you could talk about proper pant lengths and how to wear different styles with shoes? Thats where the frump kicks in for me…”

This can definitely be a little bit tricky but if you follow the advice and diagrams below, you’ll be good to go!

1. Ankle Boots

Ankle boots are really versatile and go with just about everything. The real trick in pairing them up is to make sure that your pants are the proper length. You want them to hit about an inch above the top of the boot (flares are the exception, they should cover most of the boot). If your skinny or straight leg jeans are too long, cuff them. HERE are some great examples of where they should hit.

Pair With: Boyfriend jeans, dresses, flares, skinny jeans, skirts and ankle pants.

Doesn’t Pair Well With:  Long skinny jeans, cuff them.

2. Flats

Ballet flats, slip on sneakers, loafers and mules can be worn with virtually everything. Just be sure your pants aren’t so long that you’re stepping on them.

Pair With:  Boyfriend jeans, skinny jeans, ankle pants, skirts, flares, dresses and leggings.

Doesn’t Pair Well With:  Pants that are too long. Wear flats into the fitting room when trying on.

3. Riding Boots

There’s only one rule to remember when it comes to riding boots…no baggy knees! Be sure that your pants are slim fitting enough to create a smooth silhouette when tucked into your riding boots. That means they should almost be a second skin. If you’re not comfortable with something that fits that tight, pair it up with a longer tunic style top.

Pair With:  Skinny jeans, dresses, skirts and leggings

Doesn’t Pair Well With:  Flares, straight leg jeans or anything not slim fitting
