Casual Chic Outfit Basics | The Power Scarf

You’ve heard of the power suit but what about the power scarf?  It really does exist!  It’s a scarf with the power to transform your everyday outfit into something really special.

Let’s talk about the power of a scarf for a second.  It’s an outfit maker in the truest sense and an inexpensive way to amp up your basics.  That’s why this week’s casual chic outfit basic is dedicated to The Power Scarf.

If you don’t believe me, check out how a Power Scarf makes the outfit in each of these past looks.

scarf-outfits-full Or in my Daily Style Diary selfies from the past couple of weeks. scarf-outfit-selfie See?  The Power Scarf makes the outfit every time.  It’s an all-around amazing accessory.  So, what’s makes a scarf a Power Scarf?  Well, it’s a magical formula of size, color and pattern.

Let’s deconstruct one of my favorites – this black, tan and coral Power Scarf from Wallis.

scarf-outfits-wallis It’s got all of the elements of a great Power Scarf – the colors are vibrant, the print is bold, the size is generous and it goes with so many things. I guess that’s why I wear it all the time.

Unfortunately Wallis doesn’t carry that scarf anymore (BUMMER!) but they do have one with similar colors – black, tan and a pop of coral.

This one from Loft has a similar color combo too.

GRAPHIC PRINTS

Graphic patterns happen to be one of my favorites when it comes to scarves.  They’re bold and they always make a statement.  They’re also a lot easier to wear than you may think.  If they scare you, just keep the rest of your look simple.

FLORAL PATTERNS

Floral scarves are probably my favorite for spring.  They look adorable with stripes and also pair well with denim shirts and pastel jeans.

Wouldn’t this one be perfect with a black and white striped top and some pink jeans?  It’s a great price too!

OUTFIT INSPIRATION

I love this look featuring a simple t-shirt and jeans and can’t wait to try it out!

This has nothing to do with scarves but…

021414-green-popover-skinny-jeans Yay!  I’ve heard from a lot of you this week and you’re loving the popover tunic as much as I do.  One reader said “It’s very J. Crew without the high price tag”.  YES!  I went back to Target this week to get it in pink and they were out of my size.  The good news is most sizes are still in stock online, so get them while you can.  My local Target doesn’t carry all eight colors, so I’ll have to order them.  At least Target.com has free shipping with the 5% Redcard discount!  Now the big decision is whether to get it in white and Caribbean blue too.  Which colors do you like best?

[Merona Popover Tunic]

I didn’t leave Target empty handed, that would be a shame.  Instead I got these super comfortable coral ballet flats.

022114-coral-flats Isn’t this color great for spring?  Wish I had waited and ordered them online because I could’ve saved some money, they’re on sale for $15.99!  That’s OK because I’ll be ordering them in the ivory/black and metallic.  They’re just a great, comfortable everyday flat and fit true to size.  I wear an 8.5 and they fit perfectly.

SPRING TRANSITIONAL STYLE PREVIEW

Even though spring is a little way off (well, a lot for some of you!), I thought it would be fun to start previewing some spring style.  I love that my favorite retailers are finally getting it – there’s a transition time between winter and spring and we need clothes for it!  They used to jump right into the warmer weather season without giving us ample choices for the awkward transitional time.

Loft

[Lace Front Cardigan]

I have a whole post coming up dedicated to trench coats.  Until then, this classic from Loft is a great investment that will last for years.

[Colorblock Trench Coat]

Gap

Pastels are all the rage for spring and Gap has plenty of transitional pieces to fill in the “gaps” in your wardrobe.  🙂

Shades of Peach

These fun legging jeans come in five pastel colors including a pretty mint.

[Essential Striped V-neck]

And of course, they still have their perennial favorites like the 1969 Boyfriend Jeans.

Old Navy

Old Navy’s spring styles usually win me over but this year they left me kind of “meh”.  I do love their jackets and still wear my white denim jacket I bought there five years ago.  I’m so happy they still carry it.  It’s a classic and looks great with all of spring’s pastels.

[White Denim Jacket]

I also love this striped hooded pullover.  It would be adorable with boyfriend jeans and red flats.

[Striped Hooded Pullover]

No spring transitional style preview would be complete without including some fun flats.  I seriously can’t wait to put my boots away for the winter.  Here are some I’ve got my eye on.

These would be perfect with boyfriend jeans, a white tee and a pink, mint or yellow cardigan.

[DV8 Totem Print Flat]

[DV8 Black/White/Coral Flat]

[Anne Klein ‘Buttons’ Linen and Gold Flats]

[Lucky Brand ‘Emmie Luxe Leopard’ Flat]

Of course, no spring footwear collection would be complete without a great pair of rain boots.  I saw these yesterday and fell hard in love.  I don’t need another but boy do I want them!

  • Great post! I so agree with you, whenever I feel I’m missing something in an outfit I add a scarf and it adds the perfect touch. I love so many of the scarves you posted and I pinned them to pinterest. So pastels are in for spring? I guess no one liked last year’s neons. It’s a good thing I only bought one bright pink neon shirt.

  • I am so terrible about using my scarves, I’m going to use your outfits as my inspiration.

  • I love scarves! I’m a firm believer in power scarves. Thanks for the inspirations, you look great! *Tammy http://wildruffle.com

  • You are quite the professional with the scarves lady : ) Lots of lovely choices there too.

So many cute things today that I don’t even know where to start! Loved so many of those scarves – I was excited because a couple of them reminded me of ones I have that I had forgotten about. Love those coral shoes – might have to get a pair at that price. I’m also intrigued by the Gap mint colored jeans. I’m really craving pops of color right now!

  • I love everything about this post! Scarves are one of my favorite accessories. I have a little stash of money I’ve been saving and I’ve been itching to go out and buy some new spring goodies. I agree on Old Navy this spring; last year I found several cute things, but not so much this year. I may have to head to Target this afternoon, thanks to this post. 🙂 Have a great weekend!!

  • Love this post so much! Scarves are easily one of my top favorite accessories. Thanks to linking to some of your favorite floral scarves. I need to get my hands on one or two! Also, not sure if anyone else is having this issue, but whenever I pull up your blog, my antivirus thing pops up. I’m wondering if something is wrong with one of your ads? Just something to look into!

  • The scarf is probably the best thing ever invented…..it’s a total game changer!!!

  • Yes! Scarves can really make an outfit! I have my eye on the colorblock trench coat from Gap now. Love how classic it looks, but the colorblocking makes it interesting!

  • Those floral scarves are perfect for spring. I like browsing through spring outfits, I like the colors and the light layers. Love the coral flats. Have a great weekend.

  • I seriously could give this post a standing ovation! I love all of it! I am putting that scarf and those ballet flats on my wish list! I may order the flats today! Thanks Alison! susan

I have had the winter blahs but am getting spring fever and ready to vamp up my wardrobe. Of all the fashion blogs I have followed the last couple of years yours is always my go-to for inspiration. Some others just aren’t practical for a mom on-the-go (i.e. skirts and heels in winter, yeah right). You always look fantastic and put-together in clothes I can wear running errands with the kiddos. Thank you Allison! Keep up the good work!

  • Ok. You put in a lot of effort and work onto this post and it shows! Love the scarves and the striped hoodie! Thank you for sharing!!! Have a fabulous weekend Alison!!!!!!

Love all of the amazing tips! I have a few scarves but when I try to wear them, I feel so strange…….mine never seem to drape as nicely as yours. I think I am scarf challenged ;-). Actually, truth be told, I am fashion challenged, which is why I ADORE your blog! Please keep the great tips coming and I will get it eventually. Thank you for helping this hot mess 🙂 Renee

  • This post got me so excited for spring! I need to get my hands on some more floral power scarves STAT. The flats, the trench, those boots! And that hoodie! I die. Love.

  • You wear scarves so well, when I wear one, my neck just disappears. I love the Target tunic, gonna check that out. Have a great weekend!

  • I’ve often observed that you are the Queen of Scarves. So it’s only natural for you to teach your loyal subjects about the power of the item. Someday I’d like to visit your castle. 🙂

  • So many pretty scarves! I love the black floral one especially. Can’t wait for spring weather to arrive!

  • I have a total weakness for scarves!! I love all of these. I feel like you and I have the same style, you are just WAY WAY better at actually expressing that style through clothes! You’re my fashion role model.

  • I’m a huge fan of a statement scarf as well. You have such a pretty variety! I think the next one I’ll go for will be something similar to the Glenda scarf as stripes are missing from my collection. PS Liking the daily style diary entries on Instagram! Keep em comin 😉

  • I absolutely agree that a scarf can totally make an entire outfit! I really love your collection! The colors and patterns are gorgeous!
