Payday Pretty | BYOB – Cardigan Obsession

Hello, pretties and TGIF!  Welcome to week four of Build Your Outfit Basics.  If you’re new here, let me catch you up.  BYOB is a six week series built around my Five Wardrobe Basics for Real Moms.  Each week I feature one of my favorite outfit builders along with some affordable options to help you build or add onto your own wardrobe.

In week one, I featured dark wash skinny jeans.  Week two was all about fabulous, cute and comfy flats and week three featured one of my favorites, scarves.  This week I’ll be sharing my obsession with cardigans.

And yes, it is a full blown obsession.

It all started back in 1997 when twin sets were wildly popular.  Remember twin sets?  Picture it.  I was fresh out of college, MMMBop was on the radio, I was working my first office job and rocking my first ever twin set bought at Loft.  Ahh, those were the days…no, not really.  Anyway, my bright pink twin set got the heck worn out of it that year and for many years after.

Now I have a cardigan in every color of the rainbow and every weight from open weave to cashmere and wool.  My hubby and kids have accepted the fact that I carry one in my purse at all times.  Yes, just like a little old granny.  You wouldn’t believe how many times it’s come in handy.  Especially when it’s 103 degrees outside and the A/C is cranking in a restaurant.  Texan problems.

Now I hear tell that some of you have not discovered the greatness that is the cardigan.  And I understand that.  They can have somewhat of a granny or soccer mom connotation.  Hey, I’m not knocking either.  But if you haven’t tried them yet, then it’s time.  They are really versatile.  Trust me on this.  You can belt one to define your waist, layer one over a chambray shirt, throw one on top of a tank top, or basically wear one any way that you would wear a blazer.

A good way to ease into cardigans is to pick up a lightweight one in a solid color.  IMO, every girl should have a Madewell cardi.  They are the perfect weight, hold up really well and come in some great colors.  Here’s one of my favorites.

And lest I forget my twin set roots, LOFT is still a go-to fave when it comes to great cardigans.  OH and just in time for my post (thanks LOFT!), everything is 40% off online with the code GLAM.  Go on, get you some!

I’m planning to add onto my collection this year with some fun prints.  Here are a few of my faves.
