Pretty Living | The Perfect Patio

My two favorite spots in my house aren’t even in the house.  They’re our outdoor living spaces – the front porch and back patio.

When we built our home five years ago, my first priority was having a front porch, which is a little uncommon in the Dallas ‘burbs.  I grew up in the northeast and have great memories of spending many summer days on the front porch swing.  So, of course, I had to have one of those too.

While I love our front porch, we also wanted a more private space for hanging out and entertaining.  To accomplish that, we recently had a large covered patio built.  It’s expanded our living space by essentially becoming another room.  I spend many hours out there on nice days, reading, watching the kids play and yes, sometimes napping.  🙂

The patio is still a work in progress but it’s starting to come together (I’ll post pics of the completed project when it’s done).

Patio Decorating Tip:  Choose neutral furniture so that the accent pieces – pillows, throws, rugs, planters and accessories – can be changed out on a whim.  Changing up the accents is an affordable way to give the space a whole new look.

I’m loosely using this space for inspiration.

You know, I was thinking a ladies’ lunch on the patio would be a great idea! That might give me the kick in the butt to get the project done. 🙂

  • I don’t blame you, Alison! I love porches and I am collecting the most gorgeous ones on Pinterest 🙂
A wrap around porch is completely unknown over here and I am dreaming of having one…

We are expecting spring temperatures this weekend and I can’t wait to do some work and planting on my terrace!

I have neither a front porch or a back patio/deck. I LONGINGLY look at lovely, inviting pictures on pinterest and in magazines. Maybe one day…….. I look forward to seeing your finished product!

  • I love the idea of having a big front porch someday! It’s lovely when you can incorporate the outdoor elements of your home into your living space, so that they’re truly extensions of the house and not just random decor.

  • Our patio is definitely an extension of our home. We live out there in the summer for grilling, reading a book, napping, and having a few adult drinks 🙂 We are working on getting it ready right now! Heather

  • Amazing porch! Love it! I would never want to leave!

  • I love lounging on our back patio and I’m sure it will soon become my favorite place in the house too! Although right now that’s the bedroom, primarily due to needing more sleep 🙂 I love these decorating ideas – I can’t wait until it gets a little nicer here so I can really make it pretty out there!

  • WOW that patio is gorgeous! I <3 all the bright colors!

  • We haven’t bought anything furniture yet, but I’ve been looking for years. Our deck has undergone a few changes since we moved in, but I think we finally got all the construction done. Thanks for the inspiration photo, I love that relaxing look. Can’t wait to see more photos soon!

  • Where did you get those jeans?!?!?! I have been wanting a pair of mint jeggings or jeans so bad and yours are adorable! And yes, next house will be needing a front and a back porch! I’ll have to add that to my wish list for the next house 🙂

  • OMG, such a beautiful, inspiring space! Just gorgeous – I just want to come over with a basket of coffee cakes and a pot of tea! Blissful:-)
    Have a wonderful day!

  • I grew up in the deep country with a large front porch. My husband grew up in the city where they didn’t hang out on the front porch a lot, and instead used a back patio. I had to convince him I needed a nice front porch! I did get a swing for an anniversary one year. I found him putting it up in the dark one night! I love my front porch and need to work a little on the back patio….

  • love you picks! can’t wait for warm nights!

  • Your inspiration photo is gorgeous, so I know your patio will look even better than that!! 🙂 And P.S. Your outfit and that photo are perfection! I could totally see that being on the cover of Elle Decor!!

  • That chevron blanket is awesome!!!

  • Your lucky I don’t live in TX because if I did I would seem like a stalker and would be hanging out on your soon to be patio (if it looked anything similar to that inspirational photo). LOL

I wish I had patio space like that. We’re apt dwellers for the moment but this is VERY NICE!
