With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, I’ve got cute date night looks on the brain. Hubby and I are pretty good about scheduling regular date nights. But they are usually to casual neighborhood eateries so I don’t make much effort in the outfit department.
But I do try a little harder for special occasions and our annual Valentine’s dinner out is one of them. It’s hard to justify buying a whole new outfit for just one night out. So I try to work with basics that I already own to create a special look.
This week, I decided to challenge myself to create some looks built on items that you and I probably already have in our closets.

Payday Pretty is my regular Friday feature where I encourage women to take a little out of the weekly budget to do something that makes you feel pretty. I also provide little pieces of inspiration each week.
I’m sure you’ve heard of re-gifting but have you ever heard of me-gifting? Even if you haven’t, you may already be doing it. See definition below:
Me-gifting (verb) – Buying gifts for oneself while out shopping for others. Me-gifting often occurs during major shopping holidays such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day.
I don’t know about you but I’ve got Valentine’s Day on the brain already. And while browsing for gifts for others, I’ve run across a whole lotta little things I’d love to snag for myself. Even though I go to a few holiday parties each year, I REALLY resent buying dress-up clothes that can only be worn a time or two. But when my hubby sprang the news that his company holiday party is THIS weekend (thanks for the warning!), I had to run out and find something to wear. What a perfect opportunity to take the Payday Pretty challenge to create a $20 holiday look. Thanks hubs!
So naturally I set out to my favorite inexpensive dress store, Ross. They always have a great selection and it’s pretty easy to find something under $20 that doesn’t look cheap or sleezy. Of which I’d prefer to look neither. But if I had to pick one, it would be cheap…I think. 🙂
I wasn’t too far into the dress rack when I stumbled across this awesome LBD for just $19.99. And who couldn’t use another LBD? I tried it on and it fit like a glove. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

BYOB – Build Your Outfit Basics
Week One – Dark Wash Skinny Jeans
There is possibly nothing more universally flattering on every woman than a perfect fitting pair of dark wash skinny jeans with some stretch. They are slimming, forgiving and seem to hold everything in place just right. I literally live in mine. Every woman needs to have a pair of these in her wardrobe arsenal!
I REALLY hesitated to make all of the $20 and under jean inspirations from Forever 21 but then I caved. After all, I have a whole closet full of their dark wash skinny jeans so I’m a believer. And they fit the $20 and under budget so perfectly, some are only $10 a pair! No, they aren’t the highest quality jeans on the market but they are pretty darn well made for the price. They keep their color wash after wash, never stretch out and are true to fit which is more than I can say for some premium denim (I won’t name any names). I also love the rise, not too high, not too low (no butt cleavage!). Forever 21 offers a wide variety of fits from petite to plus size, high waisted to classic fit. There’s something to fit every body type. The jeans below range in price from $10-$20.
