Ask Alison | Four Simple Summer Hairstyles

Ask Alison Graphic Hairstyles Today’s Ask Alison question was posted in the Summer Style Me Pretty Challenge Facebook group from one of the challengers.

I could use some cute, easy ways to style my hair up for summer.  Nothing too crazy that requires an extra set of hands or a ton of products.  All of the ones on Pinterest say they’re easy but then they end up being 17 steps.  Help!  – Ashley

Well, Ashley you’re in luck because all of my hairstyles take seconds to master.  Yes, you read that right, SECONDS.  Most of them are only three steps.  How’s that for super simple?

You just need to start out with clean, dry hair.  Actually one of them only requires your hair to be clean, not dry and with the others it can be dirty.  So scratch that.

I told you this would be easy, right?

Sound too good to be true?  Then watch this quick video I put together with my four super simple summer hairstyles.  These are my go-to hairstyles when it’s just too hot to make much of an effort.

It’s Your Turn:  Do you have a question you’d like to see answered in a future Ask Alison post?  If so, leave it in the comments below.

  • Girl…that was a super impressive video!! You should be a news reporter. For real…call WFAA today! 🙂 I can be a reference. That was good!!

    • LOL! You are WAY too kind Erika! Thanks so much.

  • Love the high ponytail for the summer. Great video Allison!

  • Erika’s comment cracked me up! Yes, please go ahead and list me on your resume too because your videos are awesome!

  • Debbie

Loved the 4 easy styles! Great post!

  • Great ideas! I have very thick and heavy hair so I like options for wearing my hair up during the summer too!

  • Amy

I am loving these videos you have put out lately! Both the makeup tutorial and hair styles video. Much easier to understand and more enjoyable than just photos. Please keep it up!

  • I love your videos, too! I love super easy hair styles. I often wear a messy low or high bun in addition to the ponytails you posted. They are fairly easy to do with day or two dirty hair. I like that headband, I may need to look for one…..it really makes the simple hair style more polished. Have a great week!

  • Renee

Great video! Where do you find the cute headbands?

    • Hi Renee! The gold braided headband is from Target. I love it because the elastic is loose so it doesn’t give me a headache.

  • These are great! Thanks! I’ve tried so many times to wear a headband, but they always seem to pop off my head. I must have a flat back of my head or something…

  • Clara

Love the 4 hairstyles. I have long hair and like it off my face when it gets so hot. Will definitely be trying. Someone mentioned a makeup video. Can you post the link for that one? Thanks

  • Love, love, love this! I live in Phoenix now, and it is SO HOT! These are perfect for those hot, no-fuss days.

A question I have: Tips on accessorizing for the summer?! Scarves instantly make it easier for me in the fall/winter months, but I’d love some cute accessory ideas for the summer.

  • Meg

oooh I soo needed this because it is getting easier to put my hair up with my son and it gets hot here in southern california during the summer – love these styles!

  • Mugsy 42

    Hey Alison!
Thanks for the tips. My ponytails always look so severe. I just need to add height to my crown. That would help.

Your video for messy buns doesn’t seem to be working. Maybe you could update that one for summer too. I love a good messy bun.

  • Stephenie Grimes

You are so darn cute, Alison! I’ve been growing out a pixie cut since last year (which is miserable, by the way) and finally it’s at my shoulders. Wearing it up is a luxury now. Thanks for the styles! Definitely be trying them!

  • OMG I nearly fell out of my seat! I have that teasing comb from the 80s! I stole it from my grandma and it is the best thing ever. I’m so possessive with it because it cannot be replaced hahaha!

  • Rachel

I am loving your video tutorials!
Definitely doing some of these simple updos this summer!!

  • Rebecca

Can’t wait to watch this video! Thanks for sharing!

I totally agree with Stephenie! you are so darn cute, but then I think when someone is real you can see it! Love the video and I’m lovin your challenges and what it is doing for the women in the group. Keep it going Alison!

  • Remember last week when I was hopeless with makeup? Well, hair is even worse! I blame it on not having any daughters to practice on. Thanks so much for this tutorial – I think I might even be able to do some of these!

  • beautiful video! love the ponytail!

  • Awesome tips, Alison! LOVE the last look!!!

  • Ashley

Please share where your blue and white greek key clutch is from!! I must get one!

  • I LOVE your hair tutorial Alison. Videos are really great for getting to know the person behind the blog a bit better and &you did an amazing job explaining all the hair styles-way too cute 🙂 I love the first ponytail, I’ll try teasing my hair a bit next time for sure to see how it looks. The last style with the headband is also my go to style when I am in a rush but want to look put together. Have a fab week, XOXO, Elif

  • crap, just cut my hair too short for these 🙁 UGH

  • These are all really cute. My hair goes up as soon as I get home but I rarely wear it like that out of the house. I have very thin hair and I think my pony’s make it more obvious how thin it is.

  • Great video!! Thanks for sharing. I am no fuss hairstyle girl as well. Ponytails are always my fave for summer. xo ~ Megan http://www.fashionistamomma.com

  • You are such a natural on camera! Great tips, I love pulling my hair back in the summer, it’s the only way to deal with the heat!

  • Great video! Your background in TV/acting really comes through in your videos. Keep up the great work!

  • Staci

Very helpful thank you. I was wondering if you have any recommendations on the dry shampoo. I tried a few without much success. If I don’t wash my hair daily it gets so greasy and looks awful. I would love to stop washing my hair daily but need help on how to keep it looking good in between washes. Thank you, I absolutely love your blog and videos!!! I look forward to participating in your next challenge.

    • Thanks Staci! My favorite dry shampoo is Dove. It smells great and isn’t heavy or leave a lot of residue like some others do. I use it along my hairline when I need to freshen up. It also works great to add texture on days when my hair is really clean and I want to style it up.

    Hey Allison-
Loved that you listed the products you liked at the end of the daily makeup routine. I am finding you are spot on with products. Thanks a trillion!
I am on my 4th watch standing here in Target. Maybe you could add product list to the end of the hair video. Target folk think I am moving in!!! Thanks in advance!!!

    • Hi Morgan! The hair products that I use in the video are Dove Strength + Shine hairspray, Garnier Smoothing Milk and Macademia Oil to smooth my frizzies. All are available at my favorite store…Target. Thanks so much for your sweet comment!

  • I just got around to watching this video and what a great tutorial (totally using these tips on vacation and in the oppressive Nebraska humidity)! I also have a pick from the 80s which I love and still use every day and yes, it has dip dyed tips also!! Kindred spirits! 🙂

Hi Alison. I’m new to your site. In your “Four Simple Summer Hairstyles” video, you state that you have naturally curly/frizzy hair and blow and iron it. Do you have a video showing how you do that? My hair is also naturally curly and frizzy and I’m trying to grow it out but the longer it gets, the frizzier it is. I’ve been wanting to try straighteners and irons but don’t have a clue what to do. Any advice you can provide is greatly appreciated!!

    • Hi Christine! I don’t have a video yet of doing a blow out but that’s a great idea! I’d love to put one together in the next few months. My biggest tips are to use a good anti-frizz product while it’s damp, let it air dry about 80% before blow drying, section it off and use a round brush to dry, then smooth it with the flat iron to finish it out. Hope that helps!

  • Colleen

I love the videos, I’m wondering where you got the headband. I’ve been looking for a double or triple band for awhile but haven’t had any luck.

    • Hi Colleen! I got that one at Target. The brand is Goody. Hope you can find one too!

  • Angela

I would love to see an article on outfits that transition from the office to social/after work easily!
