April 7, 2017 - Friday Favorites, Style

Alison’s Friday Favorites

I wasn’t going to do a Friday Favorites this week.  As a matter of fact, I wasn’t sure that I was ever going to do one again.

Every week when I post my Friday Favorites, I get more unsubscribes from my newsletter list than any other type of post. We all know it’s not because I’m controversial (ha!) but when I do more “personal life” posts, inevitably I also get more unsubscribes.

I actually *think* I understand why, some women come to GYPO for the style tips and that’s it.  I get that, really, I do.  My feelings aren’t hurt, it’s not personal. If I went to NPR and didn’t get news, I’d be pretty disappointed too.

But the thing is, I didn’t start blogging just to share tips and advice.  I did it to connect.  After working from home for a few years, it was my way of forming relationships with the outside world and meeting women on the style journey with me.

This may sound silly and/or sappy but I’ve never viewed you as “an audience” or “followers”.  From day one of doing this in 2012, I’ve felt like you’re my friends.  And of course I want to share my personal life with my friends!

So even though I know it’s going to hurt my newsletter list, I’ve decided to continue these posts. Relationships are more important than numbers and I’d much rather have a smaller list of women who want to be here.

So for those of you who are still here (my friends), here’s a little slice of what’s been going down in my life lately.  🙂

Favorite #1 – My Niece’s Baby Shower

We’ve got so much exciting stuff happening in our family between now and the end of May – Aubrey’s cheer team is heading to a big competition in Florida, she’s going to her first prom and she’s graduating!  That still hasn’t fully sunk in.

But one of the things I’m most excited about is…I’m going to be a great aunt!

My niece Lauren and her husband are expecting their first baby – a little girl (AHHH!!!) at the end of May.  They are naming her Vivienne (Vivie for short) and we had the pleasure of showering the new little miss and her mama with gifts this past weekend at the Dallas Arboretum.

In this picture we have four generations of girls, including Vivie.  From left to right are my daughter Aubrey, Lauren (mama to be), my mom Carol (great-grandma), me, my sister Andrea (Lauren’s mom) and my daughter Ava.

Favorite #2 – This Week’s GNO’s

It was a hectic week full of activity and fun GNO’s!  On Tuesday night, I went to an event at Closet Revival in Plano, Texas where I gave women tips on how to build a spring capsule wardrobe.  We had an awesome turn out and it was so much fun watching the women shop and put together their outfits.  A few of the local Spring 2017 GYPO Style Challengers came out too.

Here I am with Tammy, one of this season’s challengers.  And yes, I’m wearing the same dress that I wore to the baby shower. When mama buys a new dress, she has to get her money’s worth!  P.S.  I’ll be posting the details on this dress on the blog next Wednesday in an Easter post but if you want it now, it’s on sale!

Favorite #3 – Spring Challenge Biggest Yet!

Holy guacamole!  The Spring 2017 GYPO Style Challenge is our biggest one yet.  Our private Facebook group is incredibly active and downright amazing.  I can’t even begin to put it into words, you just have to experience it for yourself!

If you didn’t get a chance to register before the outfits started, it’s not too late!  You can still sign up to get your shopping list and the first 10 outfits immediately before our refund period ends tomorrow night.  I’d love to have you join and promise if it’s not the most fun you’ve ever had on Facebook, I’ll happily give you your money back! Sign up HERE.

Favorite #4 – Must Have Shorts (April Fools!)

I went out looking for some new denim shorts (or “jorts” as my husband lovingly refers to them) earlier this week and instead found these bad boys.  They’re actually “hot pants” made by Levi’s and you’re not going to believe the price tag on them! Pre-orders are now being accepted so get on the list.  Remember, you heard about them here first!  No, actually don’t admit to that.  🙂

Favorite #5 – Scarf Collection Update

I apologize in advance if you’re sick of hearing about the GYPO Collection silk scarf line (because you’re going to keep hearing about it).  First off, I want to address that the price point is a bit above what some of you were hoping for, and I understand your disappointment.  So I wanted to explain a little bit behind the pricing decision because you know with me, everything is on the table for discussion.  🙂

First and foremost, I wanted a product that I could be proud to put the GYPO name on and in order to do that, there were some non-negotiables. The materials had to be high quality and I wanted them made here in the US.  I could’ve gone with cheap fabrics and had them mass produced in China at a great price, but I chose not to because there’s no way I would’ve felt good about that decision.  I also wanted something completely unique to the brand, so an artist was commissioned to create these one of a kind watercolor designs just for us.  As I’m sure you understand, these decisions factored into the pricing.

But the main reason I’m going to keep talking about them (and hoping you buy them) is this:  the more you buy, the more we can donate to Genesis Women’s Shelter to help women and children out of domestic violence situations.  I purposely kept our margins slim to make the scarves more affordable while still being able to donate to the shelter.  I sincerely hope you’ll consider purchasing this unique wearable art for a great cause.  You can shop the collection HERE.

  • Glad you are doing the Friday Favorites – I love seeing little snippets of people’s everyday! And I feel like that’s what makes blogging so different from news mediums or magazines. If someone is recommending something or teaching me something through a blog, I like to know a bit about who’s behind the words and blogging usually lets us do that.

  • I’ve always loved your posts of you wearing new outfits. Don’t ever change!

  • Pam Ward Priester

Keep on keepin’ on! I love your blog and love when the Friday posts have more real life stuff in them. It makes you more “real” and “relatable”. Truly appreciate all your tips. I’m a 49 year old mom of 3 girls (ages 13 to 19) who recently returned to work (at an office) 4 days per week after 17 years of working from home. I do appreciate your tips on style and being a little more hip than I am naturally (LOL!) Thank you!!

    • Hi Pam! Thank you so much! I’ll keep including it, it’s honestly what makes blogging fun! Three girls, wow! I’m sure you have a lot of fun with them. Hope you’re transitioning back into office life smoothly!

  • ML Hagler

I enjoy knowing a bit of real life about bloggers I follow! The quality of your readership is what counts, not the numbers!

  • Elizabeth Pennington

Just had to chime in to say that I’ve followed you for a bit but never commented. I had to today- I think connections are what makes the world go round, so I love getting to know others. 🙂

    • Aw, thanks Elizabeth! I so appreciate you taking the time to comment today. It means a lot! And yes, connecting with other women is really, truly the best part of all of this!

  • Genia M Melton

I love your Friday favorites post!
Reciently, when I tried to access your posts on my iPhone I was diverted to a “your lucky phone has been selected to win” that I couldn’t get past. I wonder if other pretties had similar technical issues with accessing your blog?

    • Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that. We haven’t had any other reports but that’s annoying and I’d definitely want to get that fixed. Thanks for letting me know!

  • annabelle

    Thank you.

  • Jennifer Hoffman

Just want to encourage you that lifestyle posts are my favorite! Connections are different than followers and that’s what really matters!

    • Hi Jennifer! That’s good feedback. Thank you and you’re right – the connections are what really matter!

  • Denise RN

I so understand your need to connect, Alison. Thanks for the tips and for keeping it real!

    • Hi Denise! Yes, it’s vitally important especially when you work from home! Thanks for taking the time to comment today! xoxo

  • Sheila

I love your Friday posts. I am taking a break from the challenge because I have been doing it since the beginning and I have a wonderful wardrobe. Also we don’t really have spring in Massachusetts so I didn’t really get to wear the last two years spring wardrobe. I will be back and I do miss the Facebook connection.

    • Hi Sheila! I understand needing a break, especially once you have your wardrobe built up! We need a graduate program, don’t we? 🙂 Hope you get some spring weather soon!

  • Tammy Biron Small

I LOVE your Friday posts! And I’m not just saying that bc I’m in it! LOL! I really do love the connection! Thanks for being real!!!

  • Marguerite

Your dress is beautiful, and so is Aubrey’s. Where can I find one like that for my daughter? The colored liner of her dress is refreshing. Wow – a great aunt! A new milestone in life. Congrats!

    • Thank you Marguerite! We got Aubrey’s at Altar’d State. Do they have that store where you live? They have some really cute stuff for girls her age!

      • Marguerite

I did not know about Altar’d State. I live in west Houston. I googled and learned there are 2 locations in the outlying ‘burbs of Houston, and 2 more to open soon! Thank you so much for introducing me to this store. I have got to check it out with my daughter! I discovered another great local store that has lovely and fun dresses for high schoolers called Anything Bling with several locations in Houston and even College Station.

  • Rhonda McCormick Thayer

I’m actually really surprised that you get unsubscribes when you share about real life. From my perspective I appreciate a little real life. I enjoy the fashion too, but after awhile, all the fashion and make up feels overdone and I love to see a glimpse into real life of the people I’m reading about. So thank you for sharing a little bit of your real life and opening up a bit to your readers! If I wanted to just see photos of fashion I could go to pinterest! Friday Favorites are my favorites.

    • sunny

      Ditto!!!

    • Aw, thanks Rhonda! I completely agree and love getting to know the person behind some of my favorite blogs. There could be some people who subscribe and aren’t quite sure what to expect. I can’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I’m ok with that! Thanks for your sweet comment and perspective! Have an awesome weekend!

  • BarbaraRP

Alison, I also enjoy reading your Friday posts and am happy that you will continue doing them. Fashion is great, but it’s also nice reading about what you and your family are up to. Thanks for being so authentically YOU!

    • Hi Barbara! Aww, thank you! I honestly enjoy doing these posts more than any other so they won’t be going anywhere!

  • judy51

Add me to the list of loving to read “real life” posts as well. I susbscribe to a rather popular blogger who models clothes and while she gives “hints” of her real life, never clarifies when people ask. If you don’t want people to know, don’t mention it. I fully understand not wanting people to know certain things going on in your life, but don’t “tease” or hint if you don’t want people to know about it. I notice she only responds when its a compliment to her or a question about her outfit (and then its only rarely she responds at all). I don’t know how much longer I’ll “follow” her.

You have a beautiful family of ladies. Your daughters are just as pretty as you!

Hope you have a fabulous weekend!

    • Hi Judy! Thanks so much for your sweet comment and compliment! I so enjoy sharing real life here. It’s part (most) of the fun.

  • Marla Walkup

I must say I really enjoy your Friday posts! I feel like it gives us a look inside your real life & I enjoy that! Makes me feel like I’m really getting to know you! I guess I’m one of your “friends” you were talking about! LOL!! Keep up the good work!!

    • Thanks Marla! You are definitely one of the friends I’m talking about! I’ve met so many amazing women through doing this and you are one of them!

  • I love your Friday posts! While I am still subscribed to your newsletter, I have unsubscribed to most since I use Feedly to track the blogs I follow. I always completely open the post on the actual blog to read instead of reading through Feedly though 😉 It is just keeping my email cleaner.

    • Interesting to know Kelly! I hadn’t thought about Feedbly but it’s possible that newsletters are starting to fall by the wayside with blogging. Thanks for keeping me in your inbox! It means a lot to me!

  • Catherine Schmidt

I really enjoy the lifestyle posts!

  • bkmobil

I enjoy the Friday posts as well. I like the “keeping it real” view we get on Fridays. I agree with Rhonda, if I just wanted to see photos of fashion I could go to pinterest. It is way more intersresting to see how fashion fits in with real people’s lives.

  • leslie

I follow a few bloggers. And I look forward to their posts each day. However, lately I have found myself looking forward to your posts the most. I love the Friday favorites and a look into your personal life. It makes you touchable and real. So keep doing you. I haven’t done a challenge yet but have gotten a lot of great ideas from your daily posts! I work in a hospital so I wear scrubs on a daily basis. So I don’t feel I would use all the outfits in a challenge. I might do the fall one. Thanks for what you do.

    • Aww, how cool is that? Thanks Leslie! This has been such an encouraging and eye opening post. I almost didn’t post it but am so glad now because of women like you!

  • aimee

Oh, I’m so glad you’re going to continue your Friday Favorites. Those posts are my, um, favorites! I love seeing how you put outfits together and it gives me lots of styling ideas. I also appreciate your posts about your real life. It’s nice to read that you’re a “real”, relatable person. Keep up the great work and stay true to who you are and keep those Friday Favorites coming!

    • Thanks Aimee! You seem like a very sweet person and I appreciate you taking the time to comment on this post! xoxo

  • I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the time and effort you put into your blog. I read a quote today that applies to just your situation! It’s by Brene Brown in her book, Daring Greatly, and goes like this: “Nothing has transformed my life more than realizing that it’s a waste of time to evaluate my worthiness by weighing the reaction of the people in the stands.” I’m glad you decided to continue with the type posts that bring you joy and are true to the reason you blog in the first place! The connection is such fun! I feel like if I ever were in your neck of the woods and ran into you, I would totally come over and say hello! Have a blessed weekend!

    • Oh I love Brene Brown! Thanks for this reminder and sharing her wisdom. When you put anything creative into the world, you have to on some level just let the reactions of others be their own and not put weight on it. But it’s so hard when you’re doing something personal. I’d love to meet you in real life someday!

  • Don’t stop sharing your real life. I like it and I actually feel more connected to you. Let me explain, I admire you and feel like you are such a great business woman. But posts like this make you feel “real” in a sense that lets your readers or me know that you also have ups and downs like any others women. You have feelings, family and your own stuff that’s behind the seasons of the business part. Have a great weekend.

    • Thanks for this perspective Bojana! I always try to strike a balance with sharing and not oversharing because I don’t want to go overboard with it. If that makes sense! I appreciate your feedback so much!

  • Stacey Keeling

Alison, don’t stop sharing about real life. To me, that’s what separates blogs from websites. There’s a person behind all of this great inspiration and information. I love that you didn’t get the scarves made in China and I’m over the moon excited to win one!!

Enjoy your family time. So many great things and I think it’s wonderful that y’all had the shower at the Arboretum – one of my very favorite places. 🙂

    • Thanks so much Stacey! I’m going to keep the personal posts coming and try to take it all with a grain of salt.

It rained our day at the arboretum but I’m looking forward to heading back down on a nice day! So happy you won the scarf!

  • Amanda Harvey

Not to sound cheesy, but you’re my Friday Favorite. I always look forward to all of your posts, but the ones on Friday are my favorite. I like to see the personal side of your life. It makes me feel more connected.

  • Genia M Melton

Lol The hot pants! I wish they were real…white elephant gifts anyone?

  • Rebecca

I’m surprised you get unsubscribes over a personal post; how about just not reading a post if you’re not interested in the content? Oh well, to each his own. I enjoy the bloggers that choose to share a little about their lives so thank you for keeping it real.

  • that’s weird that you get unsubscribes on the personal content- I must be the opposite, I like to know who a person is. Keep it coming!

    • Totally agree! I love getting glimpses into the personal lives of the bloggers I follow too. Thanks for letting me know!

  • Keep being real, girl! E-hugs!
