I Feel Pretty | Blue

blue-wool-coat-full-2 Have you ever heard of Blue Monday?  I just found out about it myself, it’s supposed to be the most depressing day of the year.  Apparently it already came and went at the beginning of January this year.  I have no clue if this has any scientific validity but I do know that, keeping it really real today, I struggle with the winter blues every year at this time.  I don’t know if it’s the lack of sunlight, the slacking on workouts, the fact that spring seems so far away or a combo of all of the above.  But it’s very real, at least to me.

Even though there’s no magic bullet, here are a few things that help me plow through these long winter days.

1.  Exercise – Even though I want to be a total slacker, I know that working out is the best way to boost my mood.  I pop in one of my Jillian Michaels DVD’s and get my sweat on.  Love her or hate her, one thing’s for sure, she will kick yo’ booty!  This one is my favorite.

2.  Upbeat Music – This song has been on my playlist lately because it makes me feel, well, “Happy”.  When it comes on in the car, I crank it up and dance every time.  This video will definitely make you smile!

3. Summer Scents – I switch out from my winter candles to summer scents.  Ahh, aromatherapy.  If I close my eyes, I can pretend like I’m at the beach.  My favorite lately is Tiki Beach from Bath and Body Works.

4.  Plan Summer Vacation – We have our family meeting in February to decide upon and start planning our summer vacation.  This year’s trip is still TBD but as soon as it’s decided, we’ll set a countdown on our phones and start looking forward to it!

5.  Wait it Out – My winter blues usually lift in early March.  That’s when the sun starts to make a regular appearance and I’m back to taking daily walks outdoors.

Until then, my favorite light blue coat and a bright scarf help brighten up these dreary winter days a little too.  Hurry up and get here March!

  1. First to comment and to link up today. Yes and yes. LOL

I love your coat and it is reminding me that I have one a little bit darker than yours, hanging with tags in my closet in US. That scarf is gorgeous too. This new sponsor company sounds awesome too and they have nice pieces. Would love to win a new dress from them.

Alison, when I layer up like I did today I can’t help but think of you because of how casually chic you always layer with sweaters and scarves. Check out the outfit and Happy Wednesday. (No more Blue Mondays, either!!)

  2. I love this look! – It’s so fun!! I’d have no idea you were having the winter blues if you didn’t say – it’s a really cheerful outfit. 🙂

  3. I LOVE that song. Your other tips are great as well, there is nothing like a great candle to lift your spirits. I’ve been a bit blue as we are dealing with lots of rain and storms but I like the idea of planning vacations now.

  4. I love this new company! Thanks for the introduction! I love all of the dresses – the lace, the 1979, the sleeveless mustard dress! So cute!! I am in a funk right now too due to the freezing cold and two feet of snow that are still on the ground. We are taking a spring break trip, so I am counting down the days!! It is great to have something fun to look forward to! Thanks friend! Susan

  5. I hate the winter blues! We got so much snow and cold weather this year, it’s hard NOT to get depressed! You’re right…music is such a good way to get out of a funk!

  6. I love the color of the coat and along with the scarf makes a great color combination. I feel the same way about winter. I really think it’s the lack of sunshine. A bright sunny day always makes me happy.

  7. I just read through the whole blog, was really busy the last little while and missed some posts. I LOVE the style feature with you and your daughter, that was easily one of the most creative style posts I had seen in a long time! I couldn’t agree more with the winter blues, in Toronto in felt like the winter lasted forever, and often I would go to work while it was dark out and come home when it was dark again, actually they even have a term for the depression that can come at this time of year.

In Italy it is really not so bad, today for example there is a lot of sun and it is 10 degrees. However, they say that “Carnevale”, the Carneval that happens in Italy, Spain, France and other latin countries is historically rooted in the fact that people needed a winter pick me up!! Happy to be back and catching up on some much needed GYPO!

  8. Yes, I definitel get the winter blues. When it’s so cold and the amount of snow we have had, it gets so depressing at times. Working out definitely helps and listening to reggae or beachy music always lifts my mood. I like your idea of switching out the candles to summery scents too! Your blue jacket is beautiful!

  9. I love your blue coat as well as the similar options you provided. I never would have thought of having a coat in that color, but it’s gorgeous! And that lace skirt you showed us from Scissortail is fantastic! Thanks for the ideas!

  10. I hadn’t heard of Blue Monday but I definitely believe it! I think it’s winter in full swing, post holiday let-down, not much to look forward to (for a lot of people) for many many months to come! I enjoyed your tips for brightening up your mood, and I love the Pharrell song..need to check out the video! Thanks for hosting another great linkup!

  11. That is such a pretty colour of coat! It has a bit of a vintage vibe which I love.

This winter has been the worst for us in something like 20 years so I am definitely suffering winter depression right now. I find the best solution for that is to go away somewhere but since my hubby is away on business on the other side of the world I did the next best thing and had some amazing girl’s days out. Really helps dull those winter blues by the second martini!

  12. Yes, I get the winter blues. Your tips for combating them are great and I do some of them and plan to try others. The thing that helps me the most is getting outside. That has been a little bit harder this year than most because our temperatures have been MUCH below normal. Generally, in East Tennessee, we have fairly moderate temperatures in the 40s. I do some vegetable gardening and winter is a great time to prep the garden. We also have 10 acres and horses. I try to get out and walk the perimeter of our property, even on grey days. So, my advice to combat winter blues is to get outside as much as possible.

  13. I didn’t know about Blue Monday, either, and I think I’m happier that way. Don’t need any other reasons to feel depressed on a Monday in January 🙂 I’m loving your chase-away-the-winter-blues tips; especially burning summer candles in winter. I have a beach scented candle that I am running to go light immediately!
Also, I do Jillian Michaels workouts, too. My favorite is Ripped in 30 because in 20 minutes she has me sweating my butt off and feeling like I just ran 10 miles. I hate her, but I love her.

  14. Ah! I love that song too, but had not seen the video! I put it on the blog last week but I used the cartoon version. It truly does make me happier – I am going to play it for these cranky kids this morning. We are out of school/work for the “Snowpocalypse” but it hasn’t hit yet so everyone is just kind of milling around the house and being snappish.

    Thanks, gal!

  15. Ah the winter and the winter blues..I would know so much about both! ugh..ridiculous temperatures and ridiculous amount of snow..it brings my spirits down, but I try to dress warm and colorful to keep my spirits up most of the time..unless I am sick, then its a whole diff story. I absolutely LOVE your jacket..been in the lookout for a pastel one for a while now..Thanks for hosting the link up..

  16. You look so pretty in that color of blue! I’m so glad you reminded me about 30 Day Shred. I’ve been getting so bored with my workouts but I have that dvd downstairs. Will definitely be switching it up today. This year hasn’t been so bad for the winter blues simply because it’s been SUCH a busy season with moving, now having two kids, etc. But I SO miss my daily walks that I take in the spring, summer, and fall. Our winters are rain, rain, rain…and a little more rain (I’m in the Pacific Northwest). Walking outside really clears my head and our new house is in a very hilly neighborhood so I’m looking forward to more intense walks (especially since I push a stroller and carry a very heavy 7 month old in the ergo!).

  17. I just started up the 30 day shred last week! Love that as my go to video. I love, love, love your jacket. I’m obsessed with jackets and wish I had an excuse to have more, but living in a place with no seasons, and our flower blubs forgot to get the memo it was winter and started blooming in January.

  19. I can relate to getting the winter blues. Exercise and taking care of myself put me into a better mood. I love your idea of lighting summery candles! I loved watching this Pharrell video – he’s such a fun guy. Your robins egg blue jacket is gorgeous! That would definitely put me into a good mood, just wearing that coat!

  20. I love the combo of that coat and scarf! It’s gorgeous! And I am so with you on the exercise, upbeat music and summer scents. Now if only it would just be warm out 😉

  21. I definitely get the winter blues. *sigh*
I’m a summertime gal and every year around this time I get anxious for the warm months!

    I enjoyed your outfits!
I’m stopping by from The Pleated Poppy and from my own blog alyssabarnettbeauty.com

  22. Very pretty! I love that color of coat! I haven’t had the winter blues this year. We moved to a warmer climate and even though we still have winter, it is much milder than where we were from! I bought a pretty mint green cardigan on clearance at Target a few weeks ago which brightened my wardrobe a bit! Have a great week!

  23. I LOVE the 30 day shred. I have never liked a work out video before or since that one. It actually works you out! Oh, and I really want that lace skirt!!

  24. Your coat is gorgeous! I’ve never heard of Blue Monday… but then again we don’t even get a winter long enough to get the blues out here in Los Angeles 😛

Stay warm and I hope you have a wonderful V-Day/President’s Day weekend!

  25. Ah yes, Blue Monday! You saw my post on this a bit ago, right? These are great ideas–I think we need to start planning a summer vacation. And I think your blue coat is very cheery!
