The Next Thing You Need | Worth the Splurge + Friday’s Fab Favorites Link Up

Although I’m a proponent of affordable fashion, today’s post is splurge-worthy because…

Yes, that’s in all CAPS on purpose.  It’s that important.

Let me define the word GREAT.  I’m not necessarily saying designer, I’m talking QUALITY (although many times designer = quality).  To be more specific, these are timeless, classic, well-made pieces that will make you happy for YEARS to come.

I’m also not encouraging you to spend more than you can afford.  Quality is worth saving up for.  On a cost per wear basis it is TOTALLY WORTH IT.  And surprise!  Sometimes it’s even cheaper than a less expensive item that you only wear a few times.  Let’s do some math.  A $400 purse that you use 365 days a year for two years is only .55 per wear.  A $25 shirt that you wear five times for just one season is $5 per wear.  Wow!

If you are only going to invest in a few things in your wardrobe, please make them a GREAT PURSE, PAIR OF BOOTS AND WATCH.

Need some options?  I’ve got them.

A classic medium-sized hobo in black works with virtually everything.  This well-constructed Marc Jacobs bag will keep you happy for many years.

[Marc by Marc Jacobs:  ‘Too Hot to Handle’ Hobo]

Not a hobo girl?  Another beautiful option in black is this classic satchel from Rebecca Minkoff.

Satchel Bag [Rebecca Minkoff:  ‘Darcy’ Leather Satchel]

My personal favorite (and the bag that I own) is this Dooney & Bourke satchel.  I did A LOT of research and read tons of reviews before buying this bag.  Bag snobs were turning in their Louis Vuittons in exchange for this purse.  Everything about it is the utmost quality – the hardware, top grain leather and the gorgeous suede interior.  This natural color gets prettier the longer you have it.  I get compliments on it just about every time I carry it.

Dooney Florentine Satchel Natural The best part is, it’s the least expensive of the bunch.

Since I’m playing favorites, let’s start with the pair that I own.  The Frye Melissa Button boot in cognac is such a classic boot that will always be in style.  I wear them with everything through the fall and winter.

Frye Riding Boots Outfits

[Frye:  Melissa Button Boot]

Two-toned boots are all the rage this year.  Normally I wouldn’t recommend investing in a trend but I think this one is here to stay for awhile.  If you can’t decide between black and brown, here’s a great option.

[Frye: Melissa Logo]

A classic flat black riding boot will never go out of style.  NEVER.  This Coach boot has just the right amount of hardware.

[Coach:  ‘Mysie’ Riding Boot]

OK, so you use your iPhone for a watch.  I totally get that and did the same for the past few years.  Then I saw a Michael Kors that I couldn’t stop thinking about, so I bought it.  I rarely leave the house without it on my wrist now.  Your iPhone will still be there, it just isn’t nearly as fashionable.

Rose Royce Jeans Detail [Michael Kors:  Chain Bracelet Chronograph]

Here’s a watch similar to the one I own, mine is gold with tortoise shell.  The chain bracelet is really pretty and classic and you can wear mixed metals with anything.

[Michael Kors:  Chain Bracelet Chronograph]

A few years ago, over-sized gold watches came onto the scene in a big way.  I wasn’t sure if the trend would last so I bought a cheap one for $20, which, of course, stopped working.  Now I know that over-sized gold watches are here to stay so investing in a high quality one is a must have.

[Michael Kors:  Large Runway Gold Watch]

A large face and leather band will always be in style.  This Marc by Marc Jacobs watch is the least expensive of the bunch but still high on quality and style.

[Marc by Marc Jacobs:  ‘Baker’ Watch]

Let me throw in one more item.

I just invested in two pairs of classic Ray-Ban’s – a Wayfarer and an Aviator.  They are so well-made and with proper care will last for years.

  • I could not agree more! Good boots, a good bad and a good watch will last you years and years and years. They are such splurge worthy items! Happy Friday Alison!

  • Oooooooh! SUCH A FUN POST! I love that black MK bag. Perhaps I need to invest?!? 🙂

  • Completely agree with all of your three. Top of my list is quality denim, there really is a difference!

  • Totally agree with you, a great bag, pumps, boots, watch and sunglasses are a must in my book. I invested in the aviator and wayfarer when I was in college and I still have them. Have a nice weekend pretty lady.

  • I’m so with you this! A new watch is on my Christmas list, and I was contemplating the gold runway watch by Michael Kors but now I think I might like the one with the silver and gold braided band. I wear a lot of silver, and my wedding rings are white gold, so I love how that will go with everything.

  • You are so right! I have been on the hunt for a classic bag lately. Most of my nicer ones are on the smaller side, and I’d love to have a medium-sized one. Your D&B bag is gorgeous!

  • WE

Last year I bought myself a very similar watch like MK, only from Gucci, and I love it to death! The watch garners attention every time its visible, thats how i like a statement piece, Love the outfit of the boots with the maxi and the denim jacket!!

  • I totally agree with you! I bought cheaper boots for years until finally splurging on a pair this year.

  • Two toned boots!!! Now why didn’t I think of that? See, that’s why I come here… to see trends that I am too oblivious to spot on my own! Yea!!! Hugs, jules

  • I tried SO hard to find a nice pair of boots this year. Unfortunately, I apparently need to stop working out my calves, because all of the nice boots were super tight around the calves! And I don’t even have big calves! I was so bummed!

    • Alison

Hi Megan – Frye makes an extended size boot just for this! I also have big calves and thought I was going to need to exchange mine when I first bought them. They were super tight on my calves but they’ve broken in really nicely. Here’s the link to the extended calf size Melissa: http://bit.ly/1ePPxh9

  • My classic investment pieces have come in and out of my closet for years and they’ve adapted to lifestyle changes – working, sahm, freelancer, travel. Will have to check out those Michael Kors watches!

  • Kim N.

Love the frye boots. I have them and they are super comfortable and you can wear with anything.

  • I completely agree and love all your picks! That Dooney & Bourke satchel is gorgeous and Frye boots are the BEST!

  • omg, i couldn’t agree more ! every woman NEEDS to splurge on these 3 items. i really love how you broke down the math for us too – i do the same thing !

  • I agree totally, with investing in those items. I think Frye is a classic and D&B is well made and lovely.
I am decades older than you, so by investment bags are Hermes. – bought on eBay, some of them, all authentic, ad then sold at a profit — 2 of them.. Talk about an investment !

  • Love all of those boots you showed
I think husband would shoot me if I bought one more pair of boots
    What does he know????

  • Couldn’t agree more about the 3 essentials! Love your pics, as usual 🙂 Have a great weekend!

    Diary of a Debutante

  • I totally agree Alison! I have just ordered a fab pair of boots & a bag for my up & coming 40th! I also have a beautiful Tag that needs the battery replacing & its on my ‘to do’ list! Some things just shouldn’t be done on the cheap! Ax

  • LOVE the Melissa Button boot, so classic!

    Happy Weekend!
    Sincerely Miss Ash

  • Autum

I absolutely adore that Dooney & Bourke bag. I do have to agree that the boots and bag are a definite must for every girl and a good investment but one of my must haves is a good pair of jeans and Hudson has several pairs that I absolutely love. They not only are great quality but they are long enough for me to wear. Being so tall I have a hard time finding a great pair of jeans that fit me comfortably and are stylish to boot. 🙂 Hudson definitely fits all my needs when it comes to a great pair of jeans.

I’m with you on the boots and purses. I splurged on good boots and wore them for years. They were the kind you could dress up or down. Plan to get a new pair soon because the zipper broke off (is that something a cobbler could fix??) and also get them in brown and black. Need to save a little first!
