I Feel Pretty | Real

Lately I’ve been playing the comparison game and that never ends well.  Sometimes when I visit other blogs and see the impossibly cute outfits they put together, I wonder why anyone wants to see what I wear.

At the heart of it, I’m a t-shirt and jeans (or tank top and shorts) kind of girl.  I’m mostly unadorned, I don’t accessorize much, I’m a minimalist.  I don’t own clutches to match every outfit and I have a few pairs of shoes that I love and wear with almost every outfit.  I rarely dress up, although I love to once in awhile.

I’m a mom and I dress like one.  I dress for my daily activities and schedule.  Some days the highlight of my day is a trip to Target, if I’m lucky.

And this is a real outfit that I wear on those days.

  1. Running Stitches

I call it my mom uniform, khaki bottoms paired with a tshirt. The tshirt is usually black. I’m trying really hard to break away from the uniform. I’ve purchase a lot of items the past few weeks. What do I grab? Yep, my mom uniform!

    • Charlotte

I’m so glad for your post. I follow several blogs and I compare myself as well. Most of the time I leave these blogs and feel very inferior. I teach 1st grade so what you have chosen to wear today is perfect for my life. Yes, I envy a lot of the things you have, as well as other blogs, but please, for real life, you are perfect.

  2. Katie @ Loverly She

I think we all play that comparison game! it’s soooo hard not to. For what it’s worth, every time I come to your blog I just think to myself how stunning of a woman you are, whether you’re in t-shirt and jeans or something fancier 🙂

  3. bianca

i’m a medical assistant, so my daily outfits consists of scrubs and more scrubs with the only accessories being my minimal earrings and my michael kors watch! i wish i worked in a business casual office to where i could try and dress up haha. i’m the same way, i’m a mom, so my outfits never look like the ones i see on all the fashion blogs :((( i do accessorize with my bags though!! the bigger the better – that way i can fit my things and my son’s things in it..

i love the color pop of this outfit though!

  4. H&K Style Journey

I think you look pretty great in your t-shirt and jeans 🙂 We are real women with real lives so we can’t compare ourselves to some of the other bloggers. They get paid big bucks to photograph some of the things on their blogs. Have a great 4th of July!

  5. Ani

Alison, it doesn’t matter if you wear a casual look or something fancy, it’s your personality that shines through and let you appear pretty :-). Important is that you feel comfortable in your Skin 🙂
Love that casual look, super summery and refreshing 🙂

  6. Elke

You look beautiful in your jeans and tshirt! And clutches, who needs a clutch when you are on the go with children? That would mean one hand less to work with. Most unpractical invention for a mum with small kids.

  7. Rachelle

Honestly when I first stumbled upon your blog my first thought was wow she’s so beautiful and classy so trust me you do not need to compare yourself to anyone as you are already fabulous. I don’t know how old you are but you don’t look old enough to be a mommy to me. I have a 9-5 so my daily uniform is usually a pencil skirt or pleated one with a button down. And on weekends I am in shorts and tees.

  8. Sheaffer

Right now my uniform is definitely cut-off denim shorts (denim, white, or colored) and a t-shirt!

  9. kathy

I guess all women are guilty of doing that. But you always look pretty and classy. I loved the black and white dress you did recently a couple of weeks back.
My husband loved these skinny green pants I bought on clearance at TJ Maxx. He is scouring the internet trying to find me another pair. ha ha I guess that has to be my feel pretty moment from this week. He still thinks I look nice after all these years!

  10. Tiffany

I think it’s nice to see bloggers wearing wearable outfits. Especially other moms! Being a SAHM this summer, I’m right there with you. Shorts and t-shirts are my mom uniform. It’s not incredibly creative, but it works for playing in the backyard, cleaning house and of course… that trip to Target. =)

  11. Lacey @ Sunny + Turquoise

I have wondered the EXACT same thing for a lot of blogs I visit — do they reaaaally go to the grocery store, bank, Target, etc with those heels and dresses/skirts/whatever else? I love visiting your blog each week because they are real and attainable outfits that can be worn each and every day! Not to mention I think we have the same style since once again, I have been eyeing those shoes from my own Target 🙂 You are by far the most stylish mom I know so keep rockin it!

  12. Lulu Soler

This is such a great casual look!
    xo Lulu

  13. Kym

I think all of us bloggers feel like that at some point…or at least I know I do. But you know what? Whenever I post an ordinary everyday outfit, I usually get lots of positive feedback because above everything else, readers mostly want to see the real us 🙂 So I applaud you for looking so freaking cute for a trip to Target, and for being so open with us. Also…you’ve got an eye for color! I mean mint with yellow? Who’d have thought? I’m loving it!

  14. Ginny

I think you always look great! I’m all about relatable fashion and I’m with you on having a summer uniform. Shorts and a tee are at the top of my list. 🙂

  15. Red Tag Chic Los Angeles

Awwww that’s a very honest thing to say Alison….yeah that’s the downside of our game but we have to be strong & let the real us shine through. You are such a pretty lady inside out so I guess whatever you wear will show the real beauty you are. I’m basically a maxi dress person on the weekends…..& professional wear during the work week. Although due to blogging….I’m injecting some flair to my work look. Happy 4th Alison!

  16. Kristine

ewww, yes, the comparison game never ends well. We’ve all been there and had moments of self doubt. But I always remind myself that inspiration is found in even the smallest things. I adore all of your looks. There are many, many of us moms and women who appreciate your real looks and fun combinations with no clutch necessary!! 😉

  17. Shira

Aw I love your style and your “real” every day style too- comparisons will drive you crazy, don’t do it!:) I’m wearing mint on my blog too today and the color alone makes me feel pretty 🙂

  18. Shybiker

We should look to other blogs for inspiration and ideas, but never for comparison. Doing that is corrosive. We’re all beautiful in our own special ways and need to recognize that, not diminish it with jealousy.

You are, by the way, one of the most naturally gorgeous women I’ve ever seen. In a simple outfit, your exceptional beauty stands out like a beacon of light.

  19. Kristin

Proof that you can look CUTE while still being comfy!

  20. Alissa

I get entirely too sucked in by the comparison game. Some days I am better at ignoring it but other days it is just a ranging machine. It’s good though to realize who you really are during those times. Your confidence totally shines through these photos.

  21. Niki

It’s for all of the reasons above why I love your outfit posts! And I love this outfit so much – it’s simple yet so stylish, and I love the colors! I feel the same way though, about my outfit posts. I sometimes wonder if I should even post them because I never think they’re anything great. But I think part of what we like as readers is just the fact that we’re sharing our personal style 🙂

  22. annie

LOVE love love the mint pants with the yellow tee…you look so cute!

    The Other Side of Gray

  23. Sarah @ Tucker Up

I feel the same way! I wonder how much clothes some of the people have. I have 0 clutches and carry around the same LV bag I have had since I was 16. I never switch it, or match clutches to my outfit. If I wear wedges to dinner Chris says I am “too fancy” so I always switch to flats. Haha! I love that your real and SO relat able! And might I add stunning?? Geeezzzz! Have a great day! Off to take my test, fingers crossed!

  24. Vodka Infused Lemonade

I know how you feel Alison.I feel the same way when I look at some blogs, then I realize that a. I don’t have that kind of money b. that’s not my style. I’m a mom, I can’t walk around the house in designer heels all day. I have to practical. I love your style. Nothing wrong with jeans and a t-shirt, that’s definitely my go-to look as well. Love what you’re wearing today. Thanks for the link up. HOpe to see you tomorrow.

  25. Vanessa

Thank you for keeping things real! That is what I love about your blog! I am a t-shirt/tank top & jeans/shorts kind of mom as well 🙂 I work full-time so I dress business casual during the day, but then as soon as I head to my 2nd job (mommy duty) I am in the same uniform as you.

  26. Bobbie

I do the same thing! Comparing ourselves is a no win situation! I think you ALWAYS looks adorable! My daily uniform would have to be straight skirt and cardi…. but I constantly feel underdressed for work!

  27. Happiness at Mid Life

I love your “real” style! I do the same and wished I had pretty purses and fancy name brand shoes/clothes. At the end of the day, it’s not practical and I would rather save $$ for my son’s college then my the “it” item of the moment. I always love your blog and your style!

  28. gina

I love your style! That is why I follow your blog. I am a Mom and want to look cute and put together but I can’t and won’t spend a lot of money on my clothes. I have other more important priorities for those funds! Thank you and please don’t change! (Also, would love to see more tips on makeup and nail polish colors.)

  29. Margaret

I completely get the urge to emulate some of the truly striking outfits posted on other blogs. But I think at its best, fashion is a reflection of who you are and how you are at any given point in time. Don’t let what you see elsewhere change you. Let it inspire you. And if it inspires you with jeans and a t-shirt (which frankly you cannot go wrong with) then so be it.

  30. Christy B

I love your outfit! It’s adorable. And those colors are my favorite of the season.

  31. Kara Beam

Love your jeans pretty lady! Your blog is fun to follow because you are real. You aren’t spending tons of money on new clothes every day which is unrealistic for most bloggers. I stopped reading some blogs where the outfit was totally unattainable. I’m not going to spend $120 on a maxi dress, $400 on Tory Burch riding boots that are a “must have”, or $500+ designer jewelry so why even read about that?? It’s refreshing to see your posts with outfits I could actually afford 🙂 Keep up the great work Alison!

  32. hl

You’re still dressing and putting more effort that I am! My work outfits (business casual) mostly consists of pencil skirts or slacks, blouses and dressy Ts. My weekend wear is mostly jeans and Ts. Comfy is better!

  33. Foodie in WV

I mostly wear jeans and t-shirts too 🙂 Wearing heels everyday with two boys just wouldn’t work for me!

  34. Jenna

I’m with you on keeping it casual and simple. I’m not typically a fan of dressing up, either. It can be so uncomfortable! When it’s this hot, I’m usually in denim shorts and a tee. That’s why summer isn’t my favorite time. In the fall and winter I feel more put together because I can layer and wear more stylish things.

  35. Jessi

I love that you keep it real! I’d rather follow blogs with beautiful women who are true to themselves and sharing their real everyday outfits. And I’m jealous of how well you pull of jeans and a tee shirt! When I do it I feel boring but you always get it right! You have such a fun, classic style and the best color coordination skills 🙂 Plus, you’re gorgeous! I’m loving the mint and yellow here!
P.S. Sometimes Target is the highlight of my week too 🙂

  36. Carole (SurfMomma)

I’m a working mom and there’s a lot of days I feel like I’m doing a good job if I have matching shoes. So much of what I love about your blog is that you are a mom and you dress for real life. And to keep it real, I don’t have the extra time (or money) to spend on coordinating purses and clutches and bangles and the 10 pairs of shoes it takes to make a “diverse” outfit. It is refreshing to find a place where someone is dressed for everyday life in a way that inspires, and you are so sweet to share your style and tips.

    • Pomereta

      I agree 100%

  37. Rachel

I love yellow and green together- it’s perfect for summer and with your tan!

  38. Marci McNair

I think your normal day wear is a great outfit! I find that most of the time, I am wearing yoga shorts or pants with a t-shirt. I at least try to buy cute t-shirts, but the reality is that I mostly work from home and there is just no need to dress up. Side note: my husband also prefers casual with no makeup (which is why I never photograph myself in said casual clothing).

I jokingly say that one of the reasons that I do pageants is because I have an opportunity to dress up. I love being a girl – I love dresses, (comfortable) shoes, and jewelry; not so much on purses – I am too practical and prefer one purse that holds everything in organized spots.

I think you strike the balance with your outfit – it is bright and fun but still casual to suit your daily lifestyle. I find that these fashion link ups help motivate me to pull together cute “daywear” outfits; so that even if I am not “dressed up,” I still look “put together.”

  39. Linda | twin-mom.com

It’s ok to compare to find new ideas you love – that’s part of the fun. There’s room for everyone online but only a few that are so fun to relate and aspire to like yours, Alison. 🙂 For me personally t-shirts are part of my uniform as a mom but I definitely don’t look as polished as you do – more like I’m about to mow the lawn. ha! Happy 4th!

  40. Saxon

I say ditto to everything that has been said above. When I go to those “high fashion” blogs I think “I can’t do that”. When I found your blog, I thought “I CAN do that! I have $10 or $20 a week to get something that makes me feel pretty.” Mossimo and Merona are more attainable to me than Tory Birch and, um……., See, I don’t even know any other designer’s names! LOL And, because of your encouragement and inspiration, I’m okay with that! Look, my life is trips to the grocery store and Target and church and babysitting the grandbabies and I LOVE IT! And, I love that you have shown me how to look cute doing those things that I love. 🙂 My uniform these days is shorts and a colorful t-shirt or my new love, the maxi dress or maxi skirt and a t-shirt. I found the CUTEST maxi dress at Ross yesterday for $9.99!!! A bargain REALLY makes me feel pretty! 😉

  41. Sherry

Love this post! I too spend the majority of my time in shorts, tank top and flip-flops (of course I accessorize….usually). It’s so easy to go down that road…I totally get it…. I’ve traveled it often through this blogging gig. It’s so hard not to compare but I think staying true to yourself and your style helps keep things in perspective. People come here because they love your style and personality…..you are a beautiful woman inside and out and that shines through on your blog:)
PS. That casual outfit is pretty darn cute!! xoxo

  42. Kathleen Lisson

My summer uniform is dress, pearls, flats and hat. So easy to mix and match!

  43. Dovalyn

I work in a corporate fitness center. Yoga pants and sweatshirts are my professional attiare so my style hasn’t changed since undergrad. I’m now in my mid-thirties and everytime I went out with my friends on the weekends, I noticed that I was the most casually dressed – normally in yoga pants. I would try to go shopping for “dressier” clothes and realized I had no idea how to put an outfit together – let alone how to do it on a budget. (Keep in mind, jeans, t-shirts, and sandals is dresses up for me.) Your blog has been a lifesaver. I’m not going to high fashion functions, just cook outs on the weekend with friends. They love me even when I wear yoga pants, sweatshirts, and sneakers…but I wanted to get “dressed up” for me…so that I felt good when I saw those pictures posted on facebook. Thank you for all the inspiration. I’ve been shopping, have several cute weekend outfits, and I’ve made a new rule – no yoga pants on the weekends unless I’m actually doing yoga. Inspriation from your blog has been very helpful! Keep posting for us normal people. 🙂

  44. Silvergirl

Love the mint and yellow combo

  45. Mo @Who is that girl Mo?

Your real outfit is cute and not at all mom looking. It’s simple but still stylish in my opinion. You can usually find me in a pair of blue jeans and a pair of sneakers. My tops vary but can be as simple as a white tee.

  46. RoselyC

I am a stay at home mom so I understand exactly what you mean. My only outings are grocery shopping or taking son to his swimming lessons. My daily outfit consists of comfy tees and jeans or shorts.

  47. ollyvia

anyway would you like to follow each other with bloglovin’?

  48. Lauren @ STYLELIXIR

I totally know what you mean… I feel that way when I see other blogs too (including yours!!) I often wear jeans too and find dressing it up with a scarf, flats or a necklace is the way I like to make it feel pretty 🙂

Thank you for hosting this link up, I always love joining in!

    Lauren xx

  49. Sukhi

And you look amazing in just a “t-shirt and jeans” outfit!! I will visit your blog, regardless of what you wear because you look amazing in anything you wear!! And it’s not about the outfit, but about how you carry it. 🙂 My outfits are very simple (as you can tell) and often consist of same shoes, jeans, skirts, dresses as well. Nothing wrong with that, like you said, we are keeping it real! :p

    – Sukhi

  50. Stephanie

Great casual outfit… love the colors! I’m a minimalist too. 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful 4th of July!

  51. Annette

We all do these unnecessary comparisons and know we shouldn’t. as it doesn’t make us feel better.
Of course I envy “Wendy’s Lookbook” and others for their amazing and expensive designer clothes which I’ll never wear… but reality is that I put my clothes together from ZARA, Mango or H&M and usually it doesn’t turn out too bad.
I rather follow blogs of real women with a realistic budget and a real life! These are women I can connect with.
Keep up your fantastic posts, Alison!

    Lady of Style

  52. Pomereta

Oh, woman. Do not change your style, I totally love it, is so colorful and fresh…when you have a busy life you want to feel confortable and look pretty/sexy in an easy way without the complication of accesorising, matching impossible patterns, etc…and lets face it: Not all of us have the budget, time or the space for all that shoes, bags, scarffs…

  53. Jyoti from Style Delights

I come to your blog to see how you have put together an outfit! Really! Not to see if you have a ‘new’ merchandise that I have never seen before!
I totally understand the feeling of ‘why someone would want to look at my blog when there are so many stylish blogs around’!, specially when I don’t have the $200 shirts I am styling;-) But I think we all have something unique to offer and that keeps us going!
    You rock BTW!!

    • Laura

Wow I love this simple but very chic outfit – the colours are so great and work well together and have a really felling of summer while not being too bright. Those sandals are so cute and I think it’s a great casual look, perfect for anything.

      Laura x

  54. Jen @ No Accounting for Style

I love seeing the way you put together outfits. They are meant for real life and provides a lot of inspiration for fellow moms. Thank you so much for your blog. Love it!

  55. MorganizewithMe!

Alison, I love your style and I think most of us have to dress “real,” because we are doing “real” things day in and day out. I think so many of us (moms) can relate to you, which is why we love your inspiration. Keep it real!

  56. Emily

I love your simple look! I feel that simply, liveable outfits are the best! I like to see bloggers in outfits that they actually wear on a day to day basis!
just found your blog and I am obsessed! 🙂

  57. Mana Smith

My blog is fashion based too, and my outfits are pretty simple as well. I think the appeal of our blogs is they show real fashion, how we take simple easy outfits and make them our own. It’s what we’re actually wearing, not something we’ve styled for the moment.

    Fashion and Happy Things

  58. Megan

Stopping by via the Funday Monday link-up! As a blogger, I completely 100% know how you feel when it comes to getting caught up in comparing with other blogs. I absolutely LOVE this look – it is completely wearable and relatable for anybody reading it and we all know you didn’t just take pics of this for your blog and then crawl back into your sweats – an actual real outfit post! Looks gorgeous girl!

  59. Jenny @ Babblings of a Mommy

Alison, I’m the same way I constantly compare my self to other bloggers and don’t feel up to par. But I think we all have something to offer. You’re a great style blogger because you have a great sense of style and you’re so relatable! I enjoy seeing your outfits every week. When it comes down to it – I’m just a tshirt and jeans kinda girl too. Keep up the good work!

    Have a great week!

    Adorable outfit.

  61. Susan

    Gorgeous girl!
And I’ve been all about the {ahem} longer denim cut off. With a fresh white t.

  62. Jan Graham-McMillen

Really, you are such a beautiful woman that it’s distressing to see you play the comparison game. When you can wear a Hefty bag and galoshes and look good, that’s worth remembering. You have lovely taste, and this little outfit suits you so well. I’m glad to see you pointing out your casual favorites … but no one dresses up as beautifully as you do.
I will tell you a private thing very publicly. The vast majority of us who rarely achieve even middling beauty have to work so much harder, and often with such limited success in our own eyes, and frankly, most other eyes. As you know, it is difficult for every woman to measure up in our culture. Please remember you are among the lovely, and know you can relax into age that way!
Beautiful women are often unkind to lesser women. Mean girls never prosper, and you have the kindest heart playing nice with the rest of us, even the odd and silly and the aging. I’m really so happy to have met you, so wear what you want and know that your beauty shines in lots of ways.
Other business: Duh. Didn’t know you did a linky party. Very lovely company!
    Have a great, confident week.

  63. Carly

Well we are ALL guilty of it..not just in bloggy world but in day to day life too! I constantly remind myself to be content with my own style (seems that some people like it) but always be open to trying new and exciting things with fashion too…its a balance…whats the point in being super duper stylish if you cant get your errands done and pick up your kids!
I adore your casual chic style…you look fantastic as always…you dont need a million trillion accessories to be stylish…
I wear a tank, light scarf, bermuda jeanshorts and sandals almost everyday lately….

  64. Glamamom

You look gorgeous no matter what you wear! The point of outfit posts, at least for Momtrends, BonBon Rose Girls and I, is to stay inspired and support one another. Doesn’t matter if its jeans and tee or a night on the town 🙂
