Try the Trend | Leggings + Long Tops

One of the biggest tips I hand out about fit is this:  To keep your proportions right, pair loose with fitted.  For instance, if you wear a tight fitting top, go with something loose on the bottom, like slouchy jeans, palazzo pants or a flowy skirt.  If you opt for an over-sized, long or loose top, go with a fitted bottom like skinny jeans or leggings.  But don’t ever do an all-over look of either type.  Too much loose doesn’t accentuate your shape, too much tight and well, you get the opposite effect.  🙂

My favorite real-life representation of this “fit rule” is leggings and long tops.  It’s the perfect combo of comfort and style and just so happens to be one of my favorite uniforms for fall/winter.

Leggings lovers rejoice, your favorite tunics and tights are back for another round this year.  If leggings aren’t your cup of tea, swap them out for skinny jeans to get the same effect.  Add in your favorite boots or flats and you’ve got yourself an instant outfit!

Try the Trend

OK, let’s start with a GOOD pair of leggings for the base of these outfits.  My all-time favorite pair are these slimming leggings.  They’re just the right thickness, hold everything in place and keep their shape wash after wash.  I’ve had mine for two years and they’re still going strong!  Definitely worth spending a little more on.

For a lightweight fall layer, try a tunic blouse.

A long cardigan is the perfect partner on chilly days.

Women's Long Zip-Front Cardigans

For a comfy, athletic vibe, try a long sweatshirt.

Solid tunic sweaters create the right backdrop for your favorite printed scarf.

  • Thanks for this post Alison! My daughter is having trouble finding tops that are long enough to pair with leggings – she has mile long legs. I am going to print this post so she will have some great ideas for outfits! Thanks! Susan

  • Funny I just wrote about this also. Some people can do baggy over baggy…not me.

    • Great minds think alike Suzanne!

  • I LOVE leggings with long sweaters/tunics during the fall and winter months. Last year, they were my go-to outfit. I have no doubt this year will be the same when the weather starts to cool of a little more. 🙂

    • I love throwing on leggings and a long top! We have the best of both worlds – comfortable and stylish! I can’t wait for the weather to cool off. 🙂

At 60 my legs are still ok, but my middle not so much- this is my go to look. I always feel pulled together and comfortable. I wear ballet flats with this look but, your ideas have inspired me to try boots both long and short this fall to see if i can pull it off. Having a blast collecting all the goodies for my first challenge. Finding lots in my closet or already bought. Moving out of my comfort zone with some new looks…..never thought i’d try a puffer vest or stripes….eek. Thanks so much, everyone should shake up their look every few decades.

    • Hi Jan, I totally agree! It’s nice to shake up the closet and try different trends out there. Have fun getting your pretty on! 🙂

  • I’m such a leggings fan. Love them, especially this time of year with boots and sweaters, like you!

    • Yay! They are so comfy!

My favorite easy to put together piece. I have several different pairs of black leggings in varying styles. So easy and comfy.

  • I always feel self conscious wearing leggings, like too much of my thighs are showing below my long shirt, even though my bum is covered. Is there a rule for how much thigh is covered to get the proportion right? Or is it a comfort thing?

also, where do you find the longer shirts? I just can’t find cute ones like yours!

    • Tricia, I believe the more you wear a trend, the more comfortable you will feel in it. The thigh coverage all depends on the certain individual. To get the long look, anything passed the lowest part of hips are great! I’ve collected the long tops for years, Loft, Old Navy, Target, etc. 🙂

  • This has basically been my go-to wardrobe for a while now, it’s so much more comfortable than jeans! You make it all look so cozy 🙂 Cute blog!

    • Thanks Jenny! Enjoy your leggings!

  • These are great examples, I need to add some longer tops to better go with my leggings…

    • Yes! You will love them!

  • So many cute ways to wear leggings! I love them all. Great tips and I agree about the ASSETS leggings being the way to go.

    • Thank you Julie! I hope you enjoy them.

  • My posts this week have been all about leggings too! I have just gotten into styling them. You are so right about the long tops. Love all your looks!

    Thrifting Diva

    • Smart lady! LOVE how you think Ayana! 🙂

  • I’ve not worn leggings for an age Alison but longer length tops are a must! Unless you are a teen with pert you know what! Lol! Ax

    • You would look gorgeous with leggings! 🙂

  • Nani Barb

I am 55+ and enjoying my retirement. I am going Holiday shopping with some gal pals and want to be comfortable and not to warm in and out of the shops. I will be wearing a long cowl neck taupe knit tunic over a black turtle neck, black leggings, black knee high boots and a black puffy vest. I love the vest because it still gives your core warmth but is light for a comfy day out.

    • You’ve got great style Nani!
