Summer to Fall Transition Outfits for Southerners

Summer to Fall Transition Outfits for Southerners

by Alison Lumbatis

This post goes out to all my southern sisters, you know who you are. The ones who are ready right about now to make a pile of all of your shorts, flip flops and tank tops in your backyard and light ’em up into a bonfire…except that it’s WAY too hot to even think about a bonfire. The ones who are lighting Bath and Body Works fall candles on 100 degree days and dreaming of UGG’s (or at least a day when you can open the windows and turn off the A/C). The ones who are sweating through their clothes at high school football games and wouldn’t dare order a pumpkin spice latte unless you wanted to raise your body temp to a dangerous level. I feel your pain this time of the year. This post is for all of us in the “in-between” who so desperately want to wear fall clothes but know there’s not enough Secret anti-perspirant to support that decision.

Our version of summer to fall transition outfits looks a bit different from the rest of the world. We can’t just go straight to cozy sweaters and loafers once September arrives. Our outfits require a wee bit more finessing than that. We have to reinvent our summer clothes.

Today I’m sharing five of my favorite summer to fall transition outfit formulas with you. What’s an outfit formula you ask? Basically it’s math for your closet! Even if you’re not a fan of math, I promise that you will LOVE a good outfit formula. Just take the basic formula and swap in any piece from your closet to make it work. You can create endless combinations for each formula!

Let’s start by breathing new life into our summer closet staple – shorts. Shorts can easily be paired up with long sleeved tops now and lightweight sweaters later when there’s a slight chill in the air.

P.S. I shopped my closet for all of these outfits but I’ve linked up same or similar items below each.

Shorts + Button Down + Belt

Tuck your favorite button down shirt (I LOVE a soft chambray for this!) into any of your shorts. Finish it off with a belt and sandals. The belt gives it polish!

[Chambray Shirt/Skinny Belt/White Shorts/Patent Sandals/Bracelets]

Shorts + Lightweight Sweater

I always dreamed of living somewhere where I could wear a sweater with shorts in the summer. This summer we traveled to Wisconsin and I was able to wear this exact outfit. Half tuck your favorite lightweight sweater into some denim shorts to create this look.

[Navy Sweater/Frayed Hem Shorts/Sandals/Bracelets]

This next set of outfits features jeans on bottom. You can wear them now with a tank and later with a tee. Don’t forget about your trusty old year-round companion Mr. Cardigan. We ladies in the south know one thing – restaurants and stores are always kept the temperature of a meat locker. Stashing a cardigan in our purses is common practice.

Tank Top + Cropped Jeans + Sandals

I call this my late August outfit. When I just can’t bear the thought of another day in shorts, this is one of my go-to’s. Pair up any color tank with cropped jeans and sandals, add a colorful necklace for an instant outfit!

[Navy Tank/Tassel Necklace/Cropped Jeans/Patent Sandals]

Tee + Jeans + Flats

As we move into September, I start to crave closed-toe shoes. Mules are a perfect summer to fall shoe because the back is open so they’re somewhat ventilated. Half tuck any color tee into skinny jeans and add leopard print flats.

[Pink Tee/Gray Jeans/Necklace/Leopard Mules]

Tee + Cropped Jeans + Sneakers

Cute and comfy! Your tee and jeans get a boost from some cool kicks. This makes a great “base” outfit for adding on layers. Finish it out with a utility jacket, long cardigan or sweatshirt if/when it starts to cool down.

Alison’s Notes: A New Chapter for GYPO

Alison’s Notes: A New Chapter for GYPO

Hey pretties! GYPO is celebrating our sixth anniversary this month and what a wild ride it’s been. From it’s early beginnings chronicling my style journey out of my own yoga pants rut to growing into a resource for women worldwide to rediscover style, it has surpassed even my wildest dreams. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t pinch myself that I get to do meaningful work that I love – and do it with all of you!

A lot has changed in these six years for me personally too. Our son Devon graduated high school and is in his last semester of college, our daughter Aubrey is off to school at TCU in her sophomore year and our youngest Ava is now 14 and just started high school. It’s hard to believe that my kids grew up (and two flew the nest!) along with the blog.

It goes without saying (but I’m saying it anyway) that the GYPO community has been the absolute BEST part of this entire journey. Honestly I didn’t know that such a kind, supportive sisterhood could develop online and I’m eternally grateful to all of you for this.

Our year ahead is ushering in a new chapter in the GYPO journey that I can’t wait to share with you today. I’m sure you’ve already noticed quite a few new changes around GYPO these past few months. For one, our web site has gotten a fresh, beautiful makeover.

In parallel I’ve been slowly making changes behind the scenes too. Together with Team GYPO (yes, we have a whole amazing team now and they’re the best team on planet Earth!) we’ve updated our mission to serve you better. As GYPO has grown it has become about so much more than me and my outfits and has become about you, the GYPO community!

While I will continue to share my own outfits and updates, the blog is a great place to feature our awesome community of Pretties and provide more resources to help you look and feel great. We are doing this by bringing you new features like the “Yes, You Can Wear” and “Style Your Size” posts and helping you shop smarter with our popular new monthly feature  “Style Your Budget”. You’ll be seeing posts from new voices on the blog in the next couple of months and I couldn’t be more excited. Don’t worry, I’ll still be around but if you want to see more of the latest Lumbatis family adventures, you can follow along on my personal Instagram.

We also have a few ways that YOU can be involved in the upcoming changes. Choose any or all of them below!

Soma Enbliss Bra Review

Soma Enbliss Bra Review

by Alison Lumbatis

I’ve made it no secret around here that I’m one of the pickiest women I know when it comes to bras. They can’t poke me, restrict me or even feel like they’re there or I’m just not going to wear them. That’s why I have a whole drawer full of bras but only have 3 that I rotate on a weekly basis and have bought in the same style and colors for years.

When Soma Intimates approached me about trying out their bras, I was more than a little hesitant. I even insisted upon going into the store to try them on first before agreeing to do a post. Such a diva, lol! But seriously, I’m pretty stuck in my ways when it comes to bras and it takes a lot to impress me.

When I got there, I talked to one of their kind bra fit experts and told her all of my reservations and list of requirements in a bra. She recommended that I try their Enbliss wireless bra. Even though I was a skeptic, I have to admit, this bra changed everything. It’s described as cloud soft, comfortable and supportive. Ladies, this is a bra you HAVE to feel. It checks all of my comfort boxes – including a few I didn’t even know I had.

It’s made of the softest material ever and all of the edges are smooth – no poking going on here.

It has this soft cover that provides extra support without constricting, which is hard to get with a wireless bra.

Needless to say, I have a new favorite bra added into the rotation – and it looks awesome under my daily uniform staple – the t-shirt!

I also picked up a pair of their Vanishing Edge panties while I was there. I’m usually a thong girl but like to mix things up with a bikini once in awhile. One main issue I have with bikini undies is visible panty lines. Soma found a way to do away with that with their patented silicon leg openings.

These nifty strips keep my panties in place without panty lines! They’re also tag free and super comfortable. They stay put but you can’t feel a thing. These panties come in 12 different colors and patterns.

Big thanks to Soma Intimates for sponsoring this post and making bras comfy enough for my picky standards!
