Ask Alison | My Everyday Makeup Routine

Ask Alison Makeup

I used to have a regular feature called “Ask Alison” where I answered reader submitted questions about style and beauty.  I thought it would be fun to revive it because I’ve gotten some really great questions lately that I want to share with all of you.  For my first edition of the reboot of this series, I’m answering one of the questions I get asked possibly more than any other.

Hey Alison!  Can you tell me about your daily makeup routine?  Your makeup is always just right and never looks too “overdone”.  What are your favorite products and how do you apply them? – Jenna C.

First off, thank Jenna!  It’s taken a lot of years and trial and error to arrive at my everyday makeup look.  I pretty much do the same makeup every day, no matter what I have going on.  While there are times that I do get a little more gussied up, this is the “base face” that I start with for everything.

It’s easiest to show you my steps on video so here’s a quick one I threw together of my daily makeup routine.

Products Mentioned in Video:

Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Sun Damage Lotion SPF 28

Monistat Chafing Relief Powder Gel

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Radiant Firming Makeup

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Loose Face Powder

Sonia Kashuk Chic Luminosity Bronzer/Blush Duo

Sonia Kashuk Dense Blush/Powder Brush No. 24

Smashbox Master Class Palette

Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara

IT Cosmetics Brow Power Universal Brow Pencil

  • I get so much out of watching videos like this because they show, in real-life, how to apply makeup with skill. You work like a pro and the results are manifest. Thanks!

  • Lisa Dunham

Can I have your skin please? It’s perfect. Going to try some of these products, especially the brow one. Thank you!

  • Love it, thanks! I bought that Chaffing cream but am so hesitant to use it! I think I can, I think I can!

  • I love that moisturizer and use the same one everyday!

  • You’re the cutest! Loved the video. I appreciate that you don’t use crazy pricey products. I’m definitely going to get some of that Monistat powder gel!

  • Laurie

This was great Alison! Loved the simplicity and I, too, appreciate that you are using regular drug store products in your daily routine! I went to Target to get the bronzer and they were out of the color I was wanting, but I’ll definitely keep looking for it!

  • This is awesome. Thanks so much for sharing the products and the demo. I love how you do your eyes. I needed the “awake” detail with the shimmer powder.

  • Alison – This came at the perfect time for me! I just wrote today about my lack of a makeup routine and my need to get started. Can’t wait to watch your video – you always look so beautiful!

  • Alison, this video is SO helpful and awesome. I almost never ever watch videos people post online, but I watched the whole thing!! So fascinating to see your products and how you apply them. (Though sidenote, you are completely gorgeous without make-up!) I’ve been struggling with how/if to adjust my routine now that we’re in humid Florida. My skin is having a little bit of a freak-out! I don’t use primer now but I think I need to start! Again, thank you for this!!

  • Gina

Loved this post! It was very helpful! Your nails look beautiful. Do you do them yourself? French manicures are my favorite but only last me a day or two. Any tips? Thanks so much!

    • Thanks Gina! I get a gel manicure once a month. It lasts about three weeks. French is my favorite because it’s less obvious when they start to grow out.

  • Okay. So you need your own t.v. show. Seriously, you need to be the co-host of a morning talk show!!!!!

  • Love your product choices! And Amen to the chafing gel! I started using it as a primer over a year ago and love it so much! And the fact that it’s a quarter of the price of other name brand primers is awesome.

  • Terrific tips, Alison! I really like that you’re using affordable products. As a blogger, I have to say what really stood out for me was the intro to your video. How did you do that? Awesome!

  • heidi

this was great!!.. I just went to sephora last week, love that place!!

  • Great tips! My everyday routine is very similar to yours. I may need to try that foundation, I’m always looking for more reasonably priced products to replace my pricier things. I’ve been wearing Bare Minerals for years, but it isn’t the cheapest! Hope you have a great week!

  • I’m so glad you did this post. I ran out of primer and was ready to reorder more, but I’m going to give the monistat cream a try.

    Thanks!

  • Saxon

Stopped by Target today and got the foundation, face powder, and the bronzer/blush duo. I hope I got the right color in the foundation. Hard to tell when you can’t try it on. I’ve never tried bronzer before. Looking forward to putting on a new face tomorrow! 😉

  • Kim

Wow, thanks for posting this video Allison! I’ve been a big devotee of Mary Kay for years, but I think now I should try the items you are using! I recently watched your video with Sonya, and I went out and bought the bronzer/blush and her neutral eye shadow palette and brush #24. I’m in love with the eye shadow, it goes on so smoothly and you can mix and match all the colors and always have a great look! I’m still learning to use the bronzer/blush, a lighter hand is necessary with that!!! I have recently using BB cream as my foundation, I like that is doesn’t feel caked on like some foundations. I might have to try the Maybelline Rewind. Anyway, thanks again! Loving the Style challenge!!! All the girls are so great!

  • Laurie Sullivan

I have a question for Allsion, or anyone that would like to answer. Why do you use the Monistat chaffing cream as a face primer?

    • lynne

I think she uses the Monistat because it is cheaper and a primer because it makes your makeup go on smoother. Hope this helps!

      • That’s exactly right Lynne! It has almost the exact ingredients of the expensive primers like Smashbox but is about 1/4th of the price. Love it!

  • Loved the whole thing! I agree, you should host something on television.

  • Samantha

What brush do you use for your loose powder?

    • Hi Samantha! I use the IT Cosmetics loose powder brush. It’s awesome!

  • Enjoyed your video! I purchased Sonia Kashuk lipstick after seeing one of your recent posts and love it! Makes trips to Target that much more dangerous. 😉 Enjoy your weekend!

Do you have any favorite lipsticks/shades to share? I love the peachy shade you wear and would love to know what that is. Thanks.

  • Thanks, Alison! My daily routine for the eyes and blush are very similar but I have wanted a bit more coverage for the foundation. I’ve been using just the Olay Total Effects CC cream, which has VERY light coverage. I just picked up the Instant Age Rewind tonight to try tomorrow. Can’t wait!

    • That’s a wonderful daily routine Heather!
