Ask Sarah | Style my Maxi Skirt for Winter

Meet Sarah of Sarah Hulbert Style!  She’s my guest stylist today and an interior decorator and wardrobe consultant with an eye for color like none other.

And I just knew she would know exactly what to do with my wardrobe problem child…my striped maxi skirt.

I love this skirt and wore it a lot last summer, usually paired up like this.

When cooler temps arrived, I wasn’t sure what to do with it.  So it’s been hanging in my closet ever since.  Time to call in the expert!

Dear Sarah – I have this striped maxi skirt that I have NO idea how to style for winter.  Can you please help me?  Eternally grateful – Alison

And here’s what she came up with.

Wow, where do I start?  I absolutely LOVE the fun pops of color in the jacket, bangles, necklace and clutch.  The denim shirt is genius (and just so happens to be one of my favorite wardrobe pieces).  And the scarf is perfect, every outfit needs a little leopard print.  I love the cognac boots, they winterize this look to a tee.
Thank you SO much Sarah!  I can’t wait to put together my own look using your brilliant outfit inspiration.

  • Sarah is awesome! I absolutely love her blog and she has an eye for putting together great pieces. She styled this skirt perfectly for you. My problem child is also a maxi skirt, but in black. I should attempt to style it similar to yours, lol! Heather

  • The only problem child I have in my wardrobe is that I’m boring and always seem to be in a rut wearing the same type of outfit!! You are so gorgeous and have such fabulous style. It’s really encouraging to me every time I read one of these posts by you.

  • I LOVE everything about this! The chambray shirt, the leopard with the stripes! Can’t wait to see an outfit post. 😉

  • Sarah did a terrific job! Can’t wait to see it on you!

  • LOVE this!! I am always wanting to wear my maxis in the winter but don’t know how! Problem solved!!

  • I sent you my problem child =] Even looking on my own I still come up short. Other than those, umm, everything. I own a LOT of v-neck t-shirts. They do not go with dress pants for work. I need to get more creative with my color pairings. I fear looking like a clown though.

  • Kristie

Love the idea of the chambray shirt with the striped maxi.
My problem child is a really pretty jewel toned green long cardigan sweater. It is light weight, with a hood. It is so pretty, but I never know what to wear with it, because it is such a vibrant color. It is hard to match it to anything. Any ideas?

    • PrettyOn

Hey Kristie! Immediately I thought of giving it a nautical vibe, with a navy/white striped tee under it and some jeans and yellow flats. Or you could always try it with a complimentary jewel tone under it like fuschia and leggings with boots. Sounds like a cute and comfy piece. Hope you get to work it into your wardrobe more often.

  • Adorable! I’ve been wanting to get some use out of my favorite summer maxis and this has totally inspired me to doooooo iiiiiiit! I’m a huge sucker for layers and pops of color so this is right up my alley!

  • The post turned out beautifully, Alison! Thank you so much for giving me the honor of styling the skirt for you, it was really fun, once I relearned Polyvore. 😉

Hope to see a version of this on you very soon. Until the next time, Friend! ~Sarah

Wow! Great outfit! Can’t wait to see it on you. 🙂

  • what a smart idea – my maxis just sit in the closet all winter long. Love it with the denim and boots!

  • I love the re-styling of the maxi! I found a very similar one the other day and didn’t buy it because I didn’t know how I could wear it in the winter! But now I want to go back!

  • Wow, great styling ideas! Sarah *is* awesome, and so are you. Thanks for linking up to Visible Monday, you look great.

  • This is great inspiration! Thank you Sarah! And I can’t wait to see you style it like that! I have the exact same skirt- I basically lived in it all summer! I am so glad you shared your inspiration!

  • Those are great looks! I’ve been wanting a black and white stripe maxi skirt for winter. I think it would look cute with a black sweater and colorful scarf too. The possibilities are endless!

  • What a good idea, and what great suggestions our Sarah had for you. Looking forward to seeing how you interpret them!
I have a high-low, sleeveless burgundy chiffon dress that just matches my oxblood boots, and the pairing works well for the bottom half of the outfit. It wants a leather jacket, but if I am to wear it to the restaurant, it would have to be a very light weight one. On a taller woman, an over-sized sweater might work, but on me? Not so much. Still pondering this one.
Have a wonderful 2013, and I look forward to continued inspiration from your posts!

  • Great outfit inspiration! Can’t wait to see how it comes out.
