Behind the Scenes of Year Three + My New HQ

Last week marked the third anniversary of Get Your Pretty On.  Three years have flown by and so much has happened both personally and professionally in that time.  Our oldest child graduated and moved off to college, I got laid off from corporate America and received the blessing of being able to pursue my passion full-time, and this little fledgling “hobby” blog grew from nothing to a combined 38,000 subscribers on e-mail/social media and over 1.5 million page views per year.

Not only that but it’s gone from a space created for my own accountability – where I shared my daily outfits and journey out of my mom rut – into a resource for women everywhere who are rediscovering style.  GYPO now has readers in over 200 countries.  Over 6,000 women have participated in the GYPO Style Challenge from all over the world including Canada, Finland, Germany, UK, New Zealand and Australia.  We have a global community of style sisters who are the kindest women I’ve ever encountered anywhere.

Honestly I’m totally blown away when I stop to think about it.

But a lot has stayed the same too.  I still do all of the blogging here and it’s been one of my favorite things to do since day one. Plus I get to do one of my other favorite things which is share advice and the things that I’ve learned along the way.  The GYPO Style Challenge is just the icing on the cake.  It gives me another opportunity to be creative but more importantly to make a difference in the lives of other women – something that humbles me on a daily basis.

Year One was all about figuring out blogging and my place in what felt like a foreign land. Year Two was the beginning of the Style Challenge, a huge amount of growth and being behind the 8 ball trying to keep up with it all. Year Three has been about getting the right systems and support in place to properly take care of everyone.

I’m starting to finally feel like I can breathe.

One of the biggest changes over the past three years is that I no longer go it alone.  I now have the amazing support of Team GYPO for all of the growth and change that’s taken place and there’s no better feeling.  The girls on my support team allow me to free up my time to focus on creativity and community building.

I’d love to introduce you to them today.

Customer Concierge/All Around Assistant – Kathryn

Kathryn is my right hand girl and primarily handles admin, technical and customer support. Her job is to keep customers happy, manage my inbox and make sure nobody falls through the cracks. She’s known to log in after hours and on weekends to help get issues resolved because she shares my belief that our customers should always feel taken care of.  If you didn’t get a style challenge e-mail, Kathryn finds out why and fixes it. If you can’t log into the membership site, Kathryn gets you in. If you need to change your e-mail address or have a billing question, Kathryn’s got you covered.

Kathryn is my front line with customers, which means I can relax knowing they’re well cared for. In addition, she handles our affiliate program, assists with loading social media content, manages the Pretty Strong program and is your girl when it comes to all customer-facing issues. In short, Kathryn is the Wonder Woman behind GYPO. She’s a hard worker, very motivated and always willing to learn something new.

Community Manager (Facebook) – Bebe Walder

Each GYPO Style Challenge includes a private Facebook group of up to 1,800 women to manage. As you can imagine, this could be a very daunting task for me to handle on my own. Thankfully, I have my Super Woman Bebe Walder to assist with this.

Bebe is the heart and soul of our Facebook community. She communicates and enforces our community guidelines, coordinates giveaways and fun weekly themes, reviews, responds to and moderates comments, engages our community, adds new group members and coordinates and attends local live events like Girls’ Nights Out and media appearances. Bebe is the perfect combination of honesty and directness combined with love, support and encouragement.

GYPO Style Challenge Launch Team

In addition to Kathryn and Bebe I have four talented tech experts that are members of the “behind the scenes launch team” for the GYPO Style Challenge.  These girls take care of everything from technical issues on the membership site to graphic and web design, web development and advertising.

The New GYPO Headquarters

Want to know a secret?  For the past three years, I’ve been working from my kitchen table.   I made the decision that Year Three was the year that I deserved an upgraded work space that allows me to be more organized and creative.

I’m happy to say that I now have a space that’s a true reflection of me and a joy to work in.  My new home office is girly, serene and comfortable with just the right touch of glam.

Welcome to my new office. Come on in!

Thank You

Thank you for being a part of the GYPO journey, whether you’ve been here since day one or just recently found me.  These past three years have been nothing short of a dream.  I get to do what I love with people that I love.  There’s honestly nothing else I’d rather do, this is truly my dream job.

I can’t thank you enough for being here and making this dream a reality.

  1. Congratulations Alison! What a dream come true! I am so happy for your success. I have enjoyed your blog for several years and I have been blessed to get to know you. Blessings for continued success and happiness ! Susan

  2. Wow! So much in just three years! Congratulations! And, I love your new space 🙂
Thank you for what you have created and to your wonderful team!

  3. As a reader from the very beginning, I just wanted to say that you deserve every bit of your success, Alison. I have seen so many bloggers lose their focus and the genuine aspect of their blog once they hit the “big time,” but you remain authentic, lovely and gracious. Congratulations on three years and I am excited to see where GYPO goes in the future. The sky’s the limit!

  4. Happy Birthday to GYPO! Your blog is one of my favorites because I feel like you really want to help women feel better about themselves and not just shill things. 😉 You are easy to relate to and so down to earth. You have great fashion sense, and I am so glad I found your blog last year!

  5. Congrats on 3 years! Love “behind the scenes” stories!

And I would love (and, she says humbly, be GOOD at) a job like Bebe or Kathryn’s! How can I find out more?

  6. I recently discovered GYPO and the concept resonated with me. Even though I’m out in the working professional world, I’ve had a hard time defining my “style” especially since I’m in a business dominated by men. I need to fit in and look professional, but I want to be a fashionable gal too. I joined my first GYPO in the fall 2015 challenge and am blown away by the supportive community and I’m looking forward to the great outfits. I thought it would be hard, but the format for shopping and combining made it easy. Congratulations on your 3 year anniversary. You’ve already been an amazing blessing to me and I can see that you’ve blessed so many women around the world too!

    1. Thank you so much Lisa. I am thrilled you have found me and I look forward to seeing you participate once the Fall Challenge daily outfits start!

  7. I love the rug in your new office! Like everything you do it is classy and elegant, yet cozy.
Would you mind sharing where you purchased it?

  8. Allison,
I LOVE the wall color in your new office. Do you have a name/brand you could share with me?

  9. Happy Birthday GYPO!!! You’ve changed my life in amazing ways in just under a year. I now have friends all over the world AND I look good all the time!! You’re doing amazing things Alison! Love, Brenda

  10. Thanks for the write up! Heart you! Fab office! Love THAT desk! Congratulations and may God continue to bless you! ♥

  11. Congratulations on your three year anniversary! I have been with you since the beginning and love every minute of being a part of this group of fantastic women! I’m so glad I stumbled across your blog three years ago! This has really lifted my self-esteem and confidence!

    Thank you so very much!!

  12. Congratulations Alison! You have really built something unique here. Although your business has grown, you continue to be ACCESSIBLE to us, your readers and clients, whom you have made feel like friends. Thank you and your team for providing something really special to so many people.

  13. Alison — Congratulations on your much-deserved success! What you do DOES make a difference in the lives of so many women, as evidenced from their comments on FB and the blog. It is such a pleasure to check in here and witness the encouragement your followers share so freely. You’ve birthed a real sisterhood here — I am looking forward to new things! Many thanks!

  14. I remember when you first started. Even then your blog was great. You’re so down to earth and “normal” and I think that’s what makes you stand out. Congratulations on your new office and all the success you’ve found with GYPO!

  15. Congratulations, dear Alison! You are doing such a great work and it´s great that you turned your passion into your business. I´m with you for one year now, I found your site just in time for last year´s fall style challenge. Since then, I´m part of the Facebook community (representing Germany) and I enjoy it every single day. These ladies even enhanced my US trip last May with shopping inspiration.
Your office looks cozy and professional in one and I hope you will have a great time working there!

  16. I have been hanging around since almost day 1. I loved your blog then and I still do. You have taught me so much about how to find my own style and confidence. I’m so excited you have a great support team and now a lovely, inspiring space to work from. You are a truly blessed woman. Here’s to the next year and all the exciting things it holds! 😀

  17. Alison, you are an amazing inspiration! I love seeing just what you’ve done to spread achievable style and confidence to so many women! Love what GYPO has become and looking forward to seeing where you take it next! Cheers!

  18. So excited for you, Alison! This is truly a gift to women everywhere. Do you ever get inquiries from women with disabilities? I’m thinking of those who are wheelchair bound, blind, etc. who would like to look wonderful but need accommodations. I have a background in occupational therapy and disability ministry building/advocacy and am about to make a decision about launching a faith-based non-profit to address some needs of people with disabilities. I find myself loving your site and fashion in general as it taps my creative side. Women with disabilities would love this as their options and budgets are limited. I have done some adaptive makeup application and love studying hair and makeup as much as fashion. So I guess what I’m proposing is a special challenge for women with disabilities. In terms of numbers, 15-20% of the population anywhere in the world lives with a disability. In my own metro St. Louis area, that means roughly 160,000 people, not including those under 5 years old and those over 65 years in nursing homes.
    Any thoughts?

    1. Hi Robin! What a great thing you are doing. I currently have a program for women who have recently gone through cancer treatment to participate in the challenge. You can check it out here:

Maybe we could talk sometime about what an adaptive challenge might look like. I’d love to chat more about this!
