Casual Chic Outfit Basics | The Boyfriend Cardigan

It’s week three of my casual chic outfit basics series and this week is all about the boyfriend cardigan.  If you missed the first two weeks of basics, you can check out dark wash skinny jeans HERE and riding boots HERE.

Speaking of riding boots, let’s stop the presses for a second because my favorite ever riding boots that I wear like every day are on sale for 35% off!  That’s right girls, the Frye Melissa Button Boot in cognac, my exact pair is ON SALE.  I promise you, you will not regret buying these and you’ll also thank me later.  🙂  Get them now while your size is in stock!

Now back to today’s business.

Boyfriend cardigans are constantly in my outfit rotation.  They’re just so versatile and really pull a whole outfit together.  I wear one at least one day of every week, year-round.  I may or may not even stuff one in my purse in the summer and pull it out in chilly restaurants and grocery stores.  My kids call me a little old grandma for doing that.  That’s ok because I’m warm!

Here are some ways that I’ve paired them up recently.

Boyfriend Cardigan Outfits In each of the outfits above, I’m wearing my favorite Mossimo boyfriend cardigans from Target.  The pickings are slim online but they have a few left in some fun colors.  I usually try to pick up a few new ones each season when all of the colors are in stock.

This week I decided to have a little fun with my boyfriend cardigans and pair them up in some new ways.

Here are a few more boyfriend cardigans that I’ve got my eye on for spring.

Love the open stitching on this one.

This color is just perfect!

I’m sort of obsessed with green for spring.

You can’t go wrong with stripes.

Tried and true basic – oatmeal is one of my favorite neutrals.

  • You are the furthest thing away from a grandma lol and I love a good boyfriend cardi, I have a couple that are on the long side and I’ve worn them so many times. Happy Valentine’s Day pretty lady.

  • I love a cardigan……creates a more relaxed vibe as opposed to a jacket. 😉

  • I could wear a cardigan every day! I am now searching for a light brown one for spring to pair with gingham. They are a staple for me! Susan

  • Love boyfriend cardigans and these are some great ones! Great spring colors! Thanks!

  • I love bf cardigans and Target has some great ones right now. My favorite outfit was the denim and leopard scarf. Very chic! Happy Valentine’s Day

  • Happy Valentine’s Day Friend!!!!!

  • Love how these look so pulled together. I have two but both are so thin I haven’t been wearing them lately. I’m thinking I need to get a heavier one! Love your looks, as always.

  • I love the Mossimo cardis too – so, so soft. And right now they are on super sale for like, $16. Though I have to laugh at the name because I have never had a a boyfriend who has worn a cardigan. I guess “grandfather cardigans” isn’t as appealing? 😉

    Happy Love Day, Alison! 😀

  • I keep passing these over because I didn’t realize how well they fit You really look great in them! Love the leopard and chambray!

Love the cardigans! In fact, I’ve worn several versions of your outfits myself. Comfortable yet pulled together, win-win in my book!

  • A cardigan is by-far my favorite piece in my wardrobe. I love Target’s cardigans! They are really well made for being only $20. My girls tease me about my granny-style, too, but they own a few as well, which they wear often! I may try the leopard, denim shirt, cardi outfit today for a lunch date with my husband!

  • I love a good cardigan. Do you often pair button ups with cardigans?

I find myself wanting to do this for casual Fridays at work, but find that I either get bunched up sleeves or shoulders because of all the layers.

    Once again, great series!

  • I finally bought two boyfriend cardigans and I absolutely love them. I like the fit and the length of them so much better than a traditional cardigan.

  • I have a ton of these style cardigans, but don’t have the wherewithal to know how to wear them properly. Thanks for these great idea!

  • I love cardigans… so versatile and comfy! Love that leopard print scarf… I need to get one!

  • Alison,
I agree, if I am not wearing one, or don’t have one with me, I often regret it. It is the perfect layer, and I love your Mossimo choice. Love the styling tips too!
