Ask Alison | Four Cool Ways to Accessorize When it’s Hot

Ask Alison Graphic Accessories

Today’s Ask Alison question comes from Ashley at My Food & Fitness Diaries.

Do you have any tips on accessorizing for the summer? Scarves instantly make it easier for me in the fall/winter months, but I’d love some cute accessory ideas for the summer. – Ashley

Ashley, I have this same problem because scarves are my go-to any other time of the year.  But scarves in Texas in the summer?

Only if spontaneous combustion appeals to you.  🙂

This is the time of the year where I pare down my accessories to keep things as simple as possible.  Who wants to pile on the arm candy or wear heavy statement necklaces on a 100 degree day?  I don’t even wear a watch in the dog days of summer.

Here are  four ways to beat the heat and still add some pizazz to your summer outfits.

1.  Hair Accessories

Hair wraps and head bands are two of my favorite ways to add a little interest to a summer outfit.  Since I usually wear my hair up on hot days, it just makes sense to add some kind of fun statement making accessory.  For Four Super Simple Summer Hairstyles, check out this post.

2. Embellished Sandals

Footwear as an accessory?  Yes!  Especially when it’s a cute embellished sandal that kicks up your outfit a notch.  Go with something attention getting like this chunky braided rope sandal.

3.  Statement Earrings

Earrings are a great way to keep your cool while amp-ing up your style.  Don’t be afraid to go big and bold for summer.

4.  Long Necklaces

The key with summer accessories is to make as little contact with your skin as possible.  For this very reason, long pendant necklaces take the place of statement necklaces as my summer go-to.  They look great with simple tank tops and t-shirts.

  1. I’m having fun accessorizing my clothing in a different way, such as a striped shirt with patterned shorts, both with similar colors, but enough contrast to pop. There are also a ton of cool and breezy tanks and tees with cut outs in the back, so I like wearing sports bras with different patterns in the back or in a contrasting color to the shirt — especially bright colors! Some of it only looks good in the gym, but every now and then you can get away with it outdoors! The key is to stay classy and not try to look like you’re 17. And how about nail polish?! I keep hearing about Jamberry, so I really need to try it!

  2. I adore that greek key clutch you have in the main picture – I’m having a greek key moment! I LOVE accessories but ever since I’ve had my daughter I continually forget to add any!!

  3. How dressy vs casual will the work wear challenge be? My office is uber casual, but I try to step it up a little…I”m trying to figure out if the challenge will wind up being even too dressy for me. Do you have an example outfit or two?

    1. Hi Heather! This challenge will be mostly nice business casual with casual Fridays. Participants will be able to swap in dressier items if they want. There will be a sample outfit when registration opens next Monday. Hope that helps!

  4. When it gets really hot I wear halter tops. I also wear big dangly earrings like you have pictured above!

  5. I love all the hair wraps you share! As my hair keeps growing out, I’m going to have to invest in some of those. I can’t ponytail it all the time and it’s still too short for fancy braids. Those look like a fantastic solution – they keep your hair back and they’re like jewelry for your hair!

  6. I have definitely been accessorizing more this summer. Getting better at it,certainly not there. Love the Kendra scott earrings..the colors are so pretty!! I definitely need all the hair style help I can get. Thanks for the tips Alison 🙂

  7. Love that example of work wear outfit you posted. Can’t wait to find out the details of those items.

  8. Great suggestions – love all your picks. I can still wear light weight scarves all summer in Seattle because it rarely gets too hot!
