Classic Closet Staples With a Pop of Print and Color

Classic Closet Staples With a Pop of Print and Color

This post is sponsored by Walmart

Ever so slowly we are starting to get back out into the world whether it’s by choice or the fact that our kids are starting back to school. Most of our shopping is still being done online and we are relying even more on having a great foundation of closet staples to put together our looks be it for sanity or that we’re actually leaving the house. That’s why for today’s post I’ve partnered with Walmart to not only bring you a fantastic look, but a classic one, one that will be just as on-trend today as it was last year and will be again next year. To add even more interest I decided to pair it up with some fun pops of color like the yellow earrings and a great print, the snake print slip-ons, which happens to also be a neutral making them very versatile.

Time and Tru Women’s Denim Jacket

A great denim jacket is a long-standing closet staple so I always suggest getting one in a medium wash with a classic cut. That way it will always be in style. A denim jacket is also very versatile because it’s great to layer over everything from a dress to your favorite graphic tee. When pairing it with denim bottoms a recommend wearing two different washes to keep it looking like denim overload.

Time and Tru Women’s 3/4 Sleeve Boatneck T-Shirt

Stripes! I can’t say how much I love a striped tee and this one is so soft! I love the boatneck detail and the 3/4 length is perfect for going into fall! For this look, you can tuck it in, leave it out or even finish it off with a half tuck. Either way will look great!

Time and Tru Women’s Belted Utility Crop Pant

Olive is considered a neutral and a great alternative to jeans. This particular pair of olive bottoms do have some distressing but what I like most is that the pockets are flat creating a more flattering silhouette.

Time and Tru Snake Print Slip Ons

Another neutral piece and just as versatile are these snake print slip-ons. If you aren’t sure about wearing snake print or even feel a little intimidated by this print, these slip-ons are a great, casual way to ease into it.

Lesa Michele Neon Yellow Woven Earrings

I’m all about pops of color and these yellow earrings were the perfect complement to style this outfit. They are light and airy so they won’t feel overwhelming. If yellow around your face doesn’t work for you then feel free to swap out for a color that does. Perhaps a coral or maybe even a turquoise.

Mellow World Carter Triple Compartment Crossbody

A neutral crossbody is a great closet staple and this one can actually hold more than just your wallet and cell but is still a manageable size. With different compartments, it’s sure to help keep your things organized.

Your turn! What’s your favorite piece? What items do you already have in your closet?

*Below are links to all the great items listed above as well as plus size options.

A huge thank you to Walmart for sponsoring this post and continuing to support small businesses like GYPO!

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale – Closet Staples for Your Budget

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale – Closet Staples for Your Budget

Although delayed, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (NAS) is one of the biggest sales of the year and one I think the Pretties look forward to. It’s no secret I’ve had my struggles with how to deliver this sale because for me it’s not about consumerism, it’s about thoughtfully selecting clothes you love, and that make you feel confident bringing out your inner glow. The mission of GYPO is simple. In short “We believe every woman, no matter their size, age, ethnicity or budget, deserves to feel pretty.” I truly believe this and that’s why I want to share this sale with you because one of the perks is that it allows us to stretch our budgets even further. Whether we’ve known each other for a long time or perhaps we’re just getting to know each other, I believe that our GYPO community has allowed us to share the good and the bad, as well as offer support, advice, and encouragement. We also have a habit of sharing when closet staples or items from the Outfit Formulas Capsules go on sale.

Navigating the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

If you’re already familiar with how the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale works then feel free to skip this section but if you’re new to the sale or just want a refresher here are a few things you should know about the sale.

1. Why is this sale such a big deal?

Sales happen all the time, right? Why the fuss? Most sales happen at the end of a season when retailers are trying to clear out old merchandise. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is unique because the items on sale are brand new pieces and particularly focus on upcoming fall trends. Getting such deep discounts on these new pieces is unheard of from any other retailer.

2. How do I get the sale price?

Nordstrom releases the sale in waves with Nordstrom cardholders getting early access for a full week before the general public. If you aren’t yet a cardholder you can apply here to take advantage of the sales now before they sell out. The sale will be open to the general public on August 19th. Click HERE for the full release schedule.

3. What about the trends?

I’ll be sharing my fall trend picks here on the blog next week when the sale is open to everyone. Stay tuned!

My Three Rules for Shopping

1. If it’s not a “heck yes” it’s a no.

If you don’t love everything about an item, the way it fits, the color, how you look in it, then don’t buy it/keep It. You should love the clothes you put in your closet because if you don’t, chances are you won’t wear them much or possibly even at all. It’s hard to look at something you’ve spent your money on a year later and realize the tag is still on it.

2. It’s not a good deal if you don’t need it.

You work hard for your money, don’t waste it buying things you don’t need. It’s easy to get caught up in the little shots of dopamine you get when you make a purchase but are those purchases things you actually need? Remember, saving $40 on something you don’t really need isn’t actually saving.

3. Be a closet curator, not a caught up consumer.

Curating a closet you love takes time and patience. It’s about deciding what items you want to invest in and what gaps you want to fill. That’s why I put so much focus on building a great foundation with closet staples. Once you have a good base it’s easy to mix and match and sprinkle in a few trends here and there.

That’s why I’m sharing this sale with you. It’s a great opportunity to fill in any closet staple gaps you may have as well as upgrade any of your pieces to a higher quality, i.e. investment pieces. Not only have I divided the items into their own categories in an effort to make it easier to search out what you’re looking for, but I’ve also arranged them according to price points to help you stay on budget. I can’t wait to see what all you find and how you style the pieces!

Back to School Teacher Looks for Camera or Classroom

Back to School Teacher Looks for Camera or Classroom

Normally I love doing the GYPO back to school post and creating fun looks for our wonderful teachers, but with so much uncertainty, there are a lot of unknowns as to what back to school is even going to look like this year. Whether you’re a student, a teacher, a parent, or an administrator, we’re all going to have to adjust to this new and God willing, only temporary, way of life. Some teachers will be face to face with their students while others will be teaching remotely – perhaps it will be a combination of the two. Either way, I wanted to help by putting together some great back to school teacher looks that are perfect for either scenario because let’s face it, you already have enough on your plate this year.

For the below back to school teacher looks, I wanted to put more focus on the top part of the outfit including accessories and of course utilizing closet staples. That way if you find yourself in the remote teaching position, you’ll be all set for any sort of video conference call or lesson recording but you’ll still have a complete outfit should you have to go into the classroom. When it comes to video calls I follow two simple formulas for dressing my top half.

Bright Solid Top + Statement Accessories or Printed Top + Subtle Accessories

Below I’ve picked three different bottoms, most of which may already be in your closet, and paired each of them up with two different top options each following one of the above formulas. For these looks, I was inspired by all the bright colors I was seeing. They made me happy and will hopefully do the same for you and your students. As a bonus, I found some easy one-and-done pieces that will also work whether you’re in the classroom or teaching from your computer. Lastly, I also picked items that could easily be interchanged with each other to create even more looks! Good luck as you begin this new school year, whatever it may hold!

1. Navy Bottoms

For the first group of looks, I styled the different top combinations with a pair of bootcut navy bottoms but they will also work with a pair of dark wash jeans. The coral top in the first look, although a solid color, does have some fun detail in the sleeves. I finished off both looks with a nice pair of neutral flats because when you’re on your feet most of the day, comfort is key!

Bright Solid Top + Navy Bottoms + Neutral Flats + Statement Earrings + Long Pendant Necklace

A coral short sleeve top with a flutter sleeve is paired with navy chinos, taupe flats and a long pendant necklace for an easy back to school teacher look.

Neutral Cardigan + Printed Top + Navy Bottoms + Neutral Flats + Delicate Necklace + Stud Earrings

A beige cardigan tops a red printed sleeveless top over navy chinos and taupe flats finish off this back to school teacher look.

2. White Bottoms

I know we’re heading into fall but I truly believe white bottoms can be worn all year long, especially with the right accessories. I’m styling a pair of skinny white jeans with some sandals and slip-ons but swap them out for a pair of ankle boots and you’re ready for fall! If white denim is just too risky for your classroom, as in you don’t want them to be the latest finger painting project, you can easily substitute in a pair of light wash jeans if your school permits jeans or you can even opt for a pair of olive bottoms. Just make sure your chambray shirt and denim bottoms are different washes. Also, a pair of white sneakers can easily sub in for the snake print slip-ons.

Chambray Button Down + Gray Tee + White Bottoms + Snake Print Shoes + Statement Necklace + Hoop Earrings

This easy back to school teachers look starts off with a chambray button-down shirt over a gray tee, white jeans and finished off with snake print slip-ons.

Navy Printed Top + White Bottoms + Bright Shoes + Delicate Necklace + Stud Earrings

This back to school teacher look features a navy button-down with white polka dots paired with white jeans and yellow strappy platform sandals.

3. Printed Bottoms

If you’ve never tried printed bottoms you should definitely give them a chance. This outfit combination will also give you the opportunity to try some fun pattern mixing! Remember, stripes are neutral when it comes to mixing your patterns. For these looks, I picked two different bright cardigans but one will easily work for both outfits. Plus the yellow sandals from above would easily sub in as well. Want more help with pattern mixing? Click HERE to download my free guide.

Bright Cardigan + White Tee + Printed Bottoms + Neutral Shoes + Statement Necklace + Drop Earrings

A kelly green cardigan tops a white tee and floral printed pants with neutral shoes and a bright yellow statement necklace finish off this back to school teacher look.

Bright Cardigan + Navy Striped Top + Printed Bottoms + Neutral Shoes + Pendant Necklace + Hoop Earrings

For this back to school teacher look a bright yellow cardigan is styled with a navy and white striped short sleeve top and some floral pants.

Bonus: One and Done

Below are two great one-and-done pieces that will make getting ready even easier in the morning. A one and done piece is a single piece that you can wear like a dress or a jumpsuit, add in a few accessories and then you’re ready to go! In this case, I’m going to style the one-and-done piece with the items from above because I love to show that you don’t need a ton of clothes to have a ton of outfits.

Bright Cardigan + Solid Dress + Bright Shoes + Stud Earrings + Pendant Necklace

A bright yellow cardigan is paired with a royal blue button-down dress and finished off with yellow strappy platform sandals make the perfect back to school teacher look.

Neutral Cardigan + Printed Dress + Neutral Shoes + Drop Earrings + Pendant Necklace

This back to school teachers look features a beige cardigan and a green printed spring dress neutral shoes.

Your turn! Which back to school teacher looks are your favorite? Do you already have some of these pieces in your closet?

Happy National Lipstick Day!

Happy National Lipstick Day!

by Jessica Pigza

To all the Pretties out there, Happy National Lipstick Day! I had no idea there was such a thing until I was talking with our fabulous business manager, Lauren, and she told me about it. I shouldn’t be surprised though, there’s a National Ice Cream Day, which was July 19th in case you were wondering and International Coffee Day, which is something I can get behind, coming up on September 29th. So in honor of National Lipstick Day, I wanted to share with you a roundup of some fan-favorite lipstick brands and colors plus some application resources and of course a few of Alison’s favorites.

Now let’s address the elephant in the room. I know this may seem like a weird topic to cover right now. It’s not lost on me that many of us are spending the majority of our time at home and even when we go out our lips are covered by a mask. So why are we even talking about lipstick? Because as Coco Chanel once said, “If you’re sad, add more lipstick and attack!” Taking a few seconds to apply a fabulous color to your lips may be just what you need to smile, feel great, and attack the day! Plus it’s an absolutely perfect time to dip your toe out of your comfort zone and experiment with different colors. There’s nothing wrong with smiling every time you catch yourself in the mirror and see how wonderful you look after finally finding the perfect shade of pink or how fierce you look after finding your perfect red. This won’t last forever, we will find our new normal and when that happens, I can’t wait to step outside showing off my perfect shade!

Favorite Lipstick Brands

1. MAC

MAC was the brand trusted and used most by the Pretties. They love the array of colors and the feel of their lips when wearing it. It’s a creamy formula with buildable coverage allowing you to more easily get your desired color. Plus you can play around with the colors right from the comfort of your own home by either uploading a photo or using your live camera. Swapping out shades has never been so easy! Right now MAC is running a National Lipstick Day special. Select lipsticks are $15!

2. LipSense

Coming in a super close second was LipSense lip colors and glosses. I personally use this brand too and I can vouch that their staying power is AMAZING! They have so many colors and when paired with their selection of glosses the combinations are endless. In order for this product to work successfully, you’ll need to purchase a color as well as a gloss because it’s the gloss that sets the color. Recently one of our Pretties put it to the ultimate test, from her mask to the dentist chair and back to her mask and it stayed put the whole way through!

3. Mary Kay

Another fan favorite brand is Mary Kay which offers lipsticks in both semi-matte and semi-shine as well as lip glosses and sheer lipsticks in a wide variety of colors. The highly pigmented colors are moisture-rich so lips won’t dry out. They also have a line of lipsticks called True Dimensions® that can smooth fine lines and make lips looks fuller.

Favorite Clean Lipstick

Beautycounter

Beautycounter boasts safer, high-performing products without harmful or questionable ingredients and their lipsticks have certainly caught the attention of the Pretties. Their color-rich formula has all the things you want in a lipstick without drying out your lips!

Beautycounter Sheer Lipstick in Rose

Color Intense Lipstick

Favorite Lipstick with a Purpose

Color The World

A portion of all sales from Color the World go to a different charity that corresponds to the lipstick purchased. I always love to see when companies give back! The lipsticks are creamy and won’t feather. They are also offering discounts on their lipsticks in honor of National Lipstick Day and free shipping!

Style Your Budget – One And Done!

Style Your Budget – One And Done!

In the world of fashion, or more specifically the fashion I have in my closet, there’s something I like to call a “one and done” outfit. It’s one simple piece that you can throw on, add an accessory or two, and look complete and ready to go. One and done pieces include dresses, jumpsuit, and rompers. I love a good one and done piece and they’re perfect for the summer. There’s so much flexibility in these types of pieces and they can easily be dressed up or dressed down.

For this month’s Style Your Budget I decided to focus on one such one and done piece and that’s the jumpsuit. Now I do realize this can be a polarizing item meaning you either love it or you hate it but hear me out. They come in so many different types of material some say they’re almost like wearing pajamas but really cute, sophisticated, and trendy ones. They also come in fun patterns or simple solids meaning you have tons of options and even different lengths so if you want something a bit cooler for summer you can opt for some cute crops or if you’re a shorts gal, a romper is a perfect substitution. Then add in some great shoes and some earrings and you’re done! Plus, here’s a fun little tip I learned from the Pretties Group, it’s sort of like a faux jumpsuit. Pair up a top and bottom in the same exact pattern or solid and presto! Instant faux jumpsuit! This is an awesome way to create the jumpsuit look without actually wearing a jumpsuit.

Before I get to this month’s Style Your Budget formula, I want to give a warm welcome to all our new Pretties and tell them exactly what Style Your Budget is. It’s a bi-monthly feature where I share a versatile and easy to follow outfit formula and then showcase five different looks each with a different price point. Then you can shop your closet, which I always recommend doing first, and if you have any gaps you want to fill you can shop where you want and at the budget you want. And can I say I always LOVE seeing how you all take the outfit formulas and run with them! I can’t wait to see what you’ll do with this one and done piece! Below I’m pairing it up in several different ways just to show you how versatile this formula can be. Now because it’s a one and done piece the formula is short but don’t let that fool you because the possibilities are endless once you add in your accessories! Bonus, top off any of the below looks with a cute jacket or cardigan for even more options!
