2018 Fall Hair Trends

2018 Fall Hair Trends

by Jessica Pigza

Happy Fall! I know for some of us, the temperatures of fall are still months away but we can get a head start, pun intended, by amping up our hair. Fall is all about rich colors and below are some of the fun trends I’ve found this season. Some styles are a bit daring and may take you out of your comfort zone while others are subtle and easy. I’m also going to tell you about one of the season’s easiest trends to pull off and it requires no cutting, no coloring, no cost and no commitment!

Color changes are going from the light, beach blonde to rich, caramel colors and darker hues, while warm toned browns are taking over opposed to the cool-toned browns we saw last fall. Below are some of our favorite hair color trends for fall.

Flannel Hair

Okay, so I know right now you are visualizing your hair looking like a checkerboard, but it’s really quite beautiful. According to Allure magazine “Flannel hair is a mash-up of burnt copper, auburn, mulled wine, and deep-red hues.” Think more abstract than literal and you can go as crazy or as subtle as you want.

“Cold Brew” Brunette

Essentially we want out hair to look like our coffee, our lattes or our mochas. Beautiful swirling browns with ribbons of caramel and cream. The technique is said to be founded by NYC-based colorist, Stephanie Brown who says the key to achieving the shiny brown color is to ask your stylist to ribbon rich highlights and lowlights through your hair for dimension. It’s all about swirling neutral and golden tones down the hair.

Fringe Bangs/Baby Bangs

Fringe bangs are still on trend going into fall, however, if you want to take it up a notch, try baby bangs that are cut to about mid-forehead. This look can be a bit drastic so work your way up slowly if you’re not comfortable with taking the big plunge. Try wispy baby bangs for a softer look.

The Bob

The bob is sticking around for fall, just a bit shorter. Wear it sleek and straight or messy and wavy. Try it with bangs or without. This is a classic look but my favorite has to be just above shoulder with a bit of mess and a bit of waves! Perfect for the fall!

The Modern Shag

The shag is making a huge comeback but this isn’t your 70’s shag. The modern shag is a bit more blended and the length can vary based on whatever you’re comfortable with. This is a super easy look to maintain and looks good on pretty much anyone!

Hint: When opting for this look, ask your stylist to cut your hair before coloring, that way the color pattern will reflect your new style!

The Center Part

Remember I said I was going to tell you about a fun way to change your hair and it requires absolutely zero commitment? Just change your part. Crazy and yet so simple. How you part your hair is an easy way to change up your look without making any permanent changes to your hair. The center part is big this season and can be incorporated into any hair length or style. If you’re not a fan of the center part you can still try an exaggerated part on either side or even a zigzag part which is great for creating extra volume. Play with your part (like I did below) and see which one you like best.

Roundup: Wide Calf Riding Boots

Roundup: Wide Calf Riding Boots

Part of our mission at GYPO is to provide helpful resources for women of all shapes and sizes. Today we are bringing you a riding boot roundup specifically for Pretties with wider calves. A good quality riding boot is a GYPO Closet Staple and everyone deserves to have a pair in their closet that they love and that fits them well.

*Be sure to pin this image so you can easily reference this roundup in the future and follow GYPO on Pinterest!

Before you start shopping you’ll want to measure your calf so you have a better chance of finding a pair that fits you well. To get the most accurate calf measurement follow these steps:

  1. Sit down and place your feet flat on the floor in front of you.
  2. Use a tape measure and wrap it around the widest part of your calf. Don’t pull too tight as you won’t want your boot to be too tight.

Petite Fit Note: If you are petite (under 5’4” tall) you’ll want to add 1.5-2” to your calf measurement. Due to your smaller frame your calf is lower than the opening of the boot since boots are designed for women of average height. Adding an extra inch or two will allow the shaft of the boot to fit your calf better.

Be sure to click the image if you like the style, often it’s available in other colors as well. Where possible we have noted the calf circumference of the boot in inches.

It’s Your Turn: Which boot do you love? Where do you shop for wide calf riding boots?

A Classic Fall Outfit Formula and a Kitten

A Classic Fall Outfit Formula and a Kitten

You know how I always say that animal print goes with everything? Well today’s outfit proves that in more ways than one! But first, a funny story about how these photos came to be.

Over the weekend my husband Craig and I were out scouting locations for a blog photo shoot when we spied an amazing set of green doors on the front of a church. One teensy, little problem – they were behind a construction fence! Craig is always up for breaking the rules so his immediate reaction was “ALRIGHT! Let’s do this!” To which I, the consummate rule follower responded  “Heck no. I’m not trying to get arrested today”.

My heart sunk as we drove away. I couldn’t stop thinking about those gorgeous green doors! They are truly the stuff blogger dreams are made of. So I did something totally uncharacteristic and told him to turn around and go back. The plan in my mind was to drive around the side to see if there was a “safe entrance”.

Sure enough there was a safe entrance (sort of) and we were able to get in front of the set of doors without breaking any laws (sort of). But here’s where the story gets better, shortly after we started shooting, I heard some faint mews coming from nearby. I kneeled down and this happened.

Craig brilliantly kept clicking away while this precious little guy made up with me. Needless to say we couldn’t leave this sweet baby behind at a construction site near a busy street. So I scooped him up and we drove to Petsmart to talk to their cat rescue people. They told us to take him to the shelter. He also got scanned for a chip but didn’t have one (they agreed he was likely a stray) but they took down our information to contact us if anyone was looking for him. In the meantime, I texted his picture to our daughter Aubrey who immediately responded “I WANT HIM!” I told her to check with her roommates first to make sure they were on board.

Happy ending – little Ollie went to bed that night with a full belly and a home with girls who love him very much!

And here’s further proof that animal print makes everything better! Especially when you pair up a kitten with your outfit. 🙂

Now onto today’s outfit. This one is an all-time fave, not just because of the kitten but because it’s chock full of classic pieces that I can’t get enough of this fall! A camel blazer, gingham button down, skinny denim and leopard mules make up this autumn outfit formula. Oh and all of these pieces are on the shopping list for the Fall 2018 GYPO Style Challenge and this is one of the outfits we’ll be styling! If you haven’t signed up yet, there’s still time to HERE.

Style Your Budget: Style Challenges Fall 2018 Capsule Wardrobe

Style Your Budget: Style Challenges Fall 2018 Capsule Wardrobe

Today we are diving in to a very exciting version of Style Your Budget. If you’re new around here, Style Your Budget helps you shop smarter by showing you one outfit prompt styled at five drastically different price points.

One of the things that makes Style Challenges work so well is that we don’t provide you the clothes. That may sound like a bad thing at first, but we promise it isn’t. By providing you with a style prompt rather than a box of clothes, you get to decide what the outfit ultimately looks like (and how much it costs).

If you already own all the pieces in the prompt you can shop your closet for a free outfit. Woohoo! However, if you need to fill in a gap in your wardrobe you get to choose which store, and more importantly how much you are going to spend, to fill in that gap.

This look is the Day 5 outfit prompt from the just released Style Challenges Fall 2018 Capsule Wardrobe. Rich fall florals are the perfect transition pattern into cooler temperatures and this outfit is finished out once again with classic closet staples. We say this a lot around GYPO, but truly, investing in good quality closet staples will serve you well season after season. Knowing you have a closet full of solid basics you love makes deciding what to wear fun and affordable!

Five Essentials to Have in Your Closet this Fall

Five Essentials to Have in Your Closet this Fall

by Alison Lumbatis

OK, so even though Mother Nature is NOT yet aware, fall is just around the corner, or at least my calendar says so! As usual, I’m getting prematurely hyped up about wearing fall outfits. Living in the south, logic tells me that this really isn’t going to happen for a few more months. But that’s not going to stop me from buying fall clothes, pairing them up and making my hubby take outfit pics in our air conditioned living room! (which btw, I’m still sweating in all of them)

Still, my enthusiasm for fall fashion cannot be contained, thwarted or otherwise poo poo’ed. It is by and far my favorite season of the year to get dressed. I mean who doesn’t love LAYERS?! If you don’t I’m just going to say, we probably can’t be friends.

I mean, have you seen fall 2018’s trends yet? This traditional girl is completely geeking out because they are SO classic! As a matter of fact, I made sure to chock the Fall 2018 GYPO Style Challenge full of classics that you most likely already have in your closet.

Today I’m highlighting a few of my favorite fall trends that are instant classics. How many of these do you already have?

1. Chambray Shirt

Oh chambray shirt, you should have your own star on the style walk of fame. What else could be so versatile that it can be worn in every season? It’s the ultimate layering piece yet it stands on it’s own. Pair it in the summer over a tank or sundress, in the winter under a sweater or quilted vest or simply tuck it into jeans for spring and fall. This super soft chambray is a recent upgrade that I made to my wardrobe and I can’t recommend it enough!

2. Gray Jeans

When gray jeans first hit the scene a few years ago, they were considered a trend but IMO they’ve reached classic status. They match virtually every color and are the first pair I reach for when I’ve grown tired of my basic blue denim.

Bonus Piece: Quilted Vest

Love them or hate them, quilted vests (and their lighter weight cousin, utility vests) are making a strong showing for fall 2018. The puffier, heavier versions from a few years back have been pared down to a light weight layer that makes them so much more wearable. If you’ve hated these vests because they added bulk you might want to give them another try!

3. Leopard Flats (and leopard everything)

I just KNEW this day was coming! Leopard is back on the scene in a big way for fall 2018. You have no idea how positively giddy this makes me! Even though retailers weren’t featuring this pattern as much the past few years, I still continued to wear my leopard mules, belt and booties. Now my love is legitimized with it officially being one of fall 2018’s trends.

Bonus Piece:  Loafers

Loafers, loafers everywhere and lots of pairs to wear! Loafers are the quintessential fall classic and there’s a bumper crop this fall like no other. It’s safe to say they’re back in the spotlight. Whether you opt for the more traditional penny loafer or a mule or slide version, you can’t go wrong.

4. Slip On Sneakers

Athleisure is on the scene for fall 2018. An easy way to dip a toe in this trend is by swapping your regular flats for a pair of fun (and might I add comfy) slip on sneakers. Metallics go with everything!

[Jeans/Slip On Sneakers]

5. Denim Jacket

Cheater, cheater pumpkin eater…denim jackets have been around forever, how can I have the nerve to put them on a fall trends list? Again, classics are all the rage and this is another that’s been thrust back into the mix in a big way. Layer one on over ANYTHING and I do mean anything. They are just that versatile. Not to mention, they’re the perfect fall layer, not too heavy, not too light.

Bonus Piece: Taupe Ankle Booties

If you don’t have them yet, run, don’t walk (but don’t fall) to get you a pair of taupe ankle booties. There’s a vicious rumor that riding boots are going out of style (btw, NOT TRUE, I’m extremely passionate about this topic in case you didn’t see my Facebook Live). The ONLY kernel of truth in that rumor is that ankle boots are having a moment. If you make one footwear update for fall, make it a pair of taupe ankle boots. Taupe matches both warm and cool colors and you can wear ankle boots with everything from boyfriend and skinny jeans to dresses and skirts.

Fall 2018 GYPO Style Challenge News + Giveaway

Have you heard the news? The Fall 2018 GYPO Style Challenge is almost here! It opens on September 7th which is also my birthday, btw and as a gift to myself (and YOU, of course!) I chocked it full of my favorite fall classics.

What the heck is a Style Challenge you ask? It’s my online personal style program that basically gives you a personal stylist for practically nothing. But seriously, it’s personal style that fits your budget and size and over 24,000 women have joined since it’s start in 2014!

I started this program based on the premise that life’s too short to worry about what you’re wearing. I want getting dressed to be the easiest thing you do all day!

Trust me when I say this, it’s about SO MUCH more than clothes. It’s real women, real fashion and most importantly real FUN!

I’m not just tooting my own horn either, pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea and read through some of the 277 five star reviews.

OK, Alison, this all sounds awesome, but how does it work?

Glad you asked! It’s so easy. First off I give you a shopping list of classic basics and seasonal fall trends. You check off anything you already have in your closet and go shopping for the rest armed with your list. No more decision overwhelm, you’ll know EXACTLY what you need. Don’t worry, I also give you links to online options if you don’t want to leave the house.

The best part? Every piece on your shopping list gets paired up in at least 4-5 different ways helping you make the most of your shopping budget!

After your pieces are in place, you’ll get a daily outfit delivered right to your inbox made up of pieces on the list to style and wear that day.

It’s kind of like meal planning for your closet. I give you the ingredients list (shopping list), you check your pantry (closet) for any staples you already have and then I send you a daily recipe (outfit formula) to create your meals (outfits) for every day of the week!

How much does this cost?

I started the Style Challenge on the premise that EVERY woman deserves to have access to great style and the confidence that comes with it, no matter her size or budget. Access to everything in the program is just $39 per season (considering a personal stylist is $150/hour, I think it’s a pretty awesome deal!) We don’t charge you a recurring membership fee either, you pay for the program you want, that’s it. Plus since you do your own shopping, YOU get to set the budget and shop at your favorite stores.

You can’t put a price on confidence but if we had to, we’d say $39 makes it a pretty good deal! PRICELESS!

I’M TOTALLY IN! Now what?

The Fall 2018 GYPO Style Challenge will be available for registration on September 7th. The minute you sign up, you’ll get your shopping list and access to the first week’s worth of outfits plus all the goodies inside our members only area. Make sure that you’re on our newsletter list so you’ll be the first to know when it opens. In the meantime, you can learn more about Style Challenges and our other programs HERE.
