Fall 2018 Trend Preview + Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Tips

Fall 2018 Trend Preview + Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Tips

In years past, I’ve struggled with how to approach the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. It doesn’t really fit in with the GYPO philosophy of shopping our closets and making the most of what we have. Plus it gets so overhyped in the blogosphere that posting about it just felt like more “noise”.

Last year, I finally made peace with it after the realization that you want to know how to shop the sale smartly, get the most bang for your buck and add pieces to your closet that stand the test of time. There’s no doubt that the NAS is great for that – it’s the best time of the year to stock up on classic investment pieces that you can wear season after season.

Early access for the 2018 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale starts on July 12th. While I’m not a big advocate for applying for credit cards, this one is well worth getting. Card holders get access to the sale 8 days before the general public and trust me when I say it makes all the difference. NAS items are notorious for selling out quickly. If you don’t have the card, you’ll have to wait until July 20th for sale prices.

Five Tips to Shop Smart at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

  1. Sign up for a Nordstrom Rewards card and get a bonus $40 note to spend to stretch your dollars. The card is also the key to getting to shop the sale during early access starting July 12th.  That’s 8 days before the general public and before items start to sell out. You get to start using it immediately upon signing up.
  2. Take an inventory of what you actually need in the following categories:  Tops, Bottoms, Dresses, Jackets, Sweaters, Footwear, Accessories, Handbags, Cosmetics. Take the same inventory of your kids’ closets if you plan to do any back to school shopping.
  3. Shop with a purpose using your list.  Don’t make any last minute emotional purchases of things you don’t need.
  4. Focus on classic basics like boots, jeans, sweaters, coats and handbags.  Look for quality investment pieces that will last season after season.
  5. Sizes sell out fast so don’t hesitate!  Especially shoes, so if you spy a cute little suede bootie, jump on it.  They’re really versatile and can be worn for fall, winter and spring.  I can’t tell you how many times I left something in my cart just to have it sell out.

While I recommend focusing on classic basics and investment items when shopping the NAS, if you’d like to add a few new fall trends, here are ten from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale to focus on.

Ten Fall 2018 Trends to Try

1. Bold Floral – Brightly colored bolder floral patterns

2. Modern Neutrals – Sophisticated pastels with minimalist details

3. Subtle Plaids – Think shades of gray with black

4. Chunky Textures – Boucle and tweed sweaters, coats and skirts

5. Minimalist Accessories – Every day wear pieces in gold and silver

6. Prairie Girl – Cowboy boots, prairie skirts

7. High Waist Jeans – In medium wash

8. Detailed Hems – Frayed, cut outs, etc.

9. Block Heels – A comfy trend for fall transition

10. Sneakers – In fun street styles

Three Rules for Perfectly Paired Accessories

Three Rules for Perfectly Paired Accessories

Get Your Pretty On is all about demystifying the process of creating outfits. Yet knowing how to pair up accessories trips up even the most style savvy among us. Can you wear a statement necklace with bold earrings? What pieces do pendant necklaces work best with?

A minimalist mindset with accessorizing is always in style. When in doubt, remember Coco Chanel’s famous quote “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least one thing off”.

Following these three rules to perfectly paired accessories also takes out the guesswork. You’ll never have to take one thing off before leaving the house again.

1. Choose ONE Star of the Show

The biggest accessory mistake women make is overdoing statement items. A good rule of thumb is to choose only one statement item per outfit.

If you opt for a statement necklace, pair it with studs or smaller earrings.

Likewise, larger earrings call for a more delicate necklace or you can skip the necklace altogether.

A bold bracelet stack is balanced out by pairing it up with simple hoops and a delicate necklace.

2. Long Necklaces Work with Everything

Because a pendant necklace isn’t near your face, you can get away with bolder earrings. You can also opt for hoop or stud earrings with this longer style necklace. If your pendant has a colored stone, pair it with a like metal earring without stones in order to avoid being too matchy-matchy.

3. Delicates Always Play Nicely Together

When in doubt, remember you can’t go wrong by pairing up your favorite delicate pieces with one another. Studs and smaller earrings were made for pairing with short simple necklaces.

If you’re looking for a little extra outfit oomph, try a bracelet stack with your delicate pieces.

Style Your Size: One Outfit from Sizes 2-24

Style Your Size: One Outfit from Sizes 2-24

Hey pretties! I’m excited today to introduce another new series at GYPO – Style Your Size. This series takes one outfit prompt and shows you how it can work for many body types and sizes – from 2 to 24.

One of the most common questions I get about Style Challenges by Get Your Pretty On is “how can this possibly work for all body types and sizes”? Today’s post puts this question to rest. You’ll see exactly how one of our outfit prompts can be styled for every size from 2-24.

For the first installment of Style Your Size, we’re styling a kimono, bright top, denim bottoms and metallic shoes. This was our outfit prompt for day seven of the Style Challenges® Summer 2018 Capsule Wardrobe.

Here’s my version of this outfit. I took a few liberties with the prompt and swapped in my denim shorts for the skirt and bright tee for the cami.

Now for our beautiful Style Your Size models from the Summer 2018 Style Challenge!

Danielle wears a size 2. She chose a dark wash denim skirt for this outfit.

Sarah wears a size 4. “I subbed denim shorts instead of the denim skirt because they felt more “me!” Having these style challenges makes getting dressed each day so much more inspiring!”

Danna wears a size 6. Her outfit substituted the long necklace and the metallic sandals.

Mary wears a size 12. She says, “This was one of my favorite challenge outfits of all time!” Her bright smile is the finishing touch.

Jennifer wears a size 14. Her outfit is right on with Day 7 Summer 2018 Style Challenge prompt.

Tina wears a size 16. She substituted dark wash denim capris for the denim skirt, proving there are many ways to put this pretty outfit together.

Stacy wears a size 20. Substituting boyfriend style capris for the denim skirt gives this outfit a dressy but causal feel.

Melissa wears a size 24. She wore the Day 7 outfit with a black skirt, making it perfect for a dressier occasion.

Size is not the only factor when talking about Styling Your Size. Taking advantage of the specialized categories of petite, plus, and tall sizes can help you find a fit that really feels like you.

Beth really understands how to style her size! “I am 5’9″ but very short waisted often wearing petite XL tops, and tall bottoms! I straddle regular and plus sizes ranging from L, XL, 0X, 16, 14W, 16W, 18.”

I’d love to see how YOU style these outfits in your size! Tag me on Instagram @_getyourprettyon or better yet, join me for the Style Challenges Summer 2018 Capsule Wardrobe. Two Black and White Summer Outfits with Pops of Pink

Two Black and White Summer Outfits with Pops of Pink

Black and white graphic patterns have been having a moment for the past few years. They’re honestly one of the easiest patterns to pair up because they match just about everything!

In today’s summer outfits, two black and white graphic printed tops were paired with pink for a fun pop of color but you could pair them up with any bright or neutral. They also look great paired up with olive and pastels like blush and lavender.

Outfit #1

Tropical Print Tank + Pink Shorts + Bright Earrings + Taupe Wedges

These bright blue tassels earrings have a band of bright pink thread around them to pull the colors together.

[Earrings/Cuff Bracelet]

I’ve been singing the praises of these taupe wedge sandals all over social media. They’re exactly what I’ve been looking for – a comfortable, neutral wedge with a heel that’s not too high. They go with everything and the price is awesome!

[Taupe Wedges]

Outfit #2

Striped Off the Shoulder Top + Pink Earrings + White Shorts + Black Wedges

This outfit’s pop of pink comes from these natural stone earrings – which also come in green and cobalt blue. Any of these colors would work great with this outfit! The freshwater pearl necklace goes with everything.

Style Your Budget: One Outfit – Five Budgets

Style Your Budget: One Outfit – Five Budgets

Today I’m introducing a new blog series that is A LOT of fun. One of the things that makes Style Challenges work so well is that I don’t provide you the clothes. Say whaaat?!

That may sound like a bad thing at first, but I promise it isn’t. By providing you with a style prompt rather than a box of clothes, you get to decide what the outfit ultimately looks like (and how much it costs).

If you already own all the pieces in the prompt you can shop your closet for a free outfit. Woohoo!

However, if you need to fill in a gap in your wardrobe you get to choose which store, and more importantly how much you are going to spend, to fill in that gap.

In this series, I’m going to show you one outfit prompt styled at five drastically different price points. I present to you — Style Your Budget.

This outfit is the Day 2 outfit prompt from the Style Challenges Summer 2018 Capsule Wardrobe.
