I don’t like to brag, but last Easter my family went viral.
No, not with COVID.
We went viral on TikTok with what started as a funny video of our dear Aunt Sally hunting for the lone lost Easter egg, long after the actual hunt had ended and an impromptu game of tackle football had broken out all around her, all set to popular music. Innocent enough, we were just entertaining ourselves really, but in the end, we somehow had 100k views (and counting).
We’re sort of kind of famous. Which is cool.
Since then, my niece and I have tried to recreate this viral success at every subsequent family gathering. We have tried multiple #challenges and #trends with varying degrees of success, though in the end, dear Aunt Sally has thus far been our only certifiable viral hit.
One of these attempted challenges, in particular, hit close to home. It was Christmas Day and after a few failed dances (rhythm is not in our genes), we settled on the #toxictrait challenge, where the camera pans across the room and as it settles on different family members, their #toxictrait (according to us) pops up.
Ever the eclectic bunch, our family’s toxic traits went a little like this:
*reads Plato for fun
*would rather be in his woodshed sawing things
*secretly sleeps on piles of cash
*only bring sarcastic comments and viral TikToks to family gatherings
And, finally, mine was:
*is a food blogger whose kids only eat chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese. TOUCHE!
More than a little hurtful because of its truthfulness, this one hits close to home because I am a food blogger and my kids, more often than not, do eat chicken nuggets or macaroni and cheese for dinner. This is not due to lack of trying or laziness on my part. I am not just a food blogger for show, I love to cook for my family. It’s because they are tweens and teens. They are in a mildly rebellious stage (collectively), and they just so happen to really like these things.
Honestly, I don’t blame them. They’re tasty and comforting.
If it’s Nuggets they want…
So, in the interest of “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” I created this easy homemade chicken nugget recipe that all of my children, even the pickiest one, agrees is better than Chick Fil A. As a bonus, it’s also Gluten-Free and easy to make.
The great thing about this recipe is its flexibility. If you’re short on time or cutting nuggets isn’t your jam, make chicken tenders with store-bought tenderloins instead. If you would rather bake them, you can do so in a 400 degree oven for about 30 minutes, flipping once about halfway through. For easy clean-up, use parchment paper under a broiler rack and you’ve got yourself an all-around weeknight #winnerwinnerchickendinner.
I have had multiple requests to make this recipe air fryer friendly, however, in full disclosure, every attempt has been a massive fail. I will keep trying, though, because my second #toxictrait is that I never give up on anything. So I’ll keep you posted if that changes.
In the meantime, Pretties. Here’s to toxic traits, TikTok’s, and funny family stories!
In a medium bowl, combine corn starch, spices, and flour (if not GF).
Stir gently with a fork.
Add chicken and toss to coat, making sure there is a dusting on all sides of each piece.
Transfer chicken to a mesh strainer to get rid of the excess flour. Set aside.
In a large skillet, add enough vegetable oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Heat until a drop of water sizzles in the pan.
Working in batches, add chicken pieces, giving a quick shake before dropping in.
Try to make sure the pieces are in a single layer and NOT touching each other.
Once cooked through and brown remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper-towel-lined plate.
IMMEDIATELY sprinkle with salt.
Repeat in batches until done.
*If you prefer to bake the nuggets instead, spread out dusted chicken on a sheet pan and bake in 400 degree oven for about 30 minutes, flipping once about halfway.

Outfit Formula #1
Denim Jacket + Solid Color Top + White Bottoms + Neutral Loafers
Shop The Look
I am totally loving this bright pink top for spring and the way to plays off my white jeans couldn’t be more perfect! The pink top is the same as above, my white jeans are closet shopped and my denim jacket is a new addition from Able. I decided to switch things up and because I can’t resist a fabulous snake print, I swapped in my snake print mules which are considered a neutral!
Outfit Formula #2
Denim Jacket + Printed Dress + Neutral Mules
Shop The Look
First, I started out with a printed dress which in my option is the number one spring must-have item. It’s so versatile and easy to be dressed up or dressed down. Plus it goes with everything from cute booties, white sneakers, or sandals. I’m wearing the same dress as above plus my favorite taupe booties and topped with my Able denim jacket.
Outfit Formula #3
Solid Color Top + Striped Button Down + White Bottoms + Neutral Loafers
Shop The Look
Hi, my name is Alison and I’m addicted to striped tops! Yes, I did add a new striped top to my closet this spring but it’s a button-down and unlike anything else I have because I can say with full confidence that I do know what’s in my closet. (thank you closet-cleanout) I also added the beautiful Kelly green sweater from above, closet shopped my white pants, and finished it off with one of the trends you’ll be seeing this spring, loafers!
Outfit Formula #4
White Top + Printed Bottoms + Neutral Sandals
Shop The Look
While my hat and classic white tee may have been in my closet for a while, I brought new life to them by pairing them up with this bright ditsy floral skirt and braided sandals. Now it’s time to bring on the sunshine!
Outfit Formula #5
Color Cardigan + White Top + Medium Wash Jeans + Neutral Loafers
Shop The Look
Finally, for the last outfit formula, everything for this look is closet shopped except for the loafers I added this year. I bought this shorter cardigan last spring and it has been one of my favorite pieces. It’s still around so it became the perfect addition to this year’s spring capsule. Something I really try to follow is that nothing new enters my closet unless it can be paired up in many different ways and this piece fits that to a T!

WHAT A SNEAK PEeK?
Neutral Cardigan + Printed Top + Dark Wash Jeans + Neutral Loafers
Check out these fabulous Pretties as they rock the sneak peek!
The first day of spring is still a few weeks away but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a jump on the season with some fun spring accessory trends. These trends are sure to lift you out of the winter doldrums and bring a smile to your face. Some of the trends listed below are breathing fresh life into the spring season while others are a carry-over from seasons past. So don’t throw them by the wayside yet as they are still having their moment. However, remember the rules don’t apply if it’s a classic and something you love that makes you feel fabulous! Then it should absolutely occupy guilt-free real estate in your closet or drawer.
1. Colored gemstones
This spring is all about bold colors and your gemstones are no different. Bright, colorful gemstones will be seen everywhere and they are the perfect way to add fun pops of color to your spring wardrobe.
Peals are truly a classic but for the past few seasons, they’ve truly been having their moment. They can be seen in everything from your favorite necklace, earrings, hair accessories, and even embellishments on handbags and tops. Pearls are not just reserved for a fancy night out or tea time, but for anytime!
This is something new we’re seeing this year, colorful handbag straps also called a guitar strap. Alison rocked this trend in the blog, How to Wear Veja Sneakers with Closet Staples showing some of its versatility. This style of strap is found on many different handbag silhouettes so you’re sure to find one you like. Plus, since they are most likely clipped on, you can interchange different straps creating many different looks. Pair this handbag with your favorite jeans or a cute spring dress.
This is a trend that’s been in and out for the past few seasons. We tend to see it more in the spring and summer months as a cute way to keep our hair up and out of our faces. The headscarves also double as protection from the sun. Whether skinny or thick, you can’t go wrong with a headband this spring.
Layered necklaces have been on trend but this spring it’s a little more specific. Two-layered necklaces will be seen everywhere and in a multitude of ways, dainty and minimalistic as well as bold and chunky. The best part of this trend is that you probably already have what you need in your jewelry box. Don’t be afraid to mix metals too.
Hoops are a classic but we’re seeing bigger, bolder, and chunkier hoops this spring. Bigger style hoops that almost graze your shoulders are making a comeback.
When we talked about this trend last year we weren’t sure how long it was going to be sticking around, but the chunky chain links and the paperclip links are showing they have some staying power. They will continue to be seen everywhere this spring and heading into summer. If you haven’t tried this trend yet, it’s not too late to add it to your wardrobe arsenal.
The sunglasses trend shape of choice this spring is the cat-eye. They look great on oval face shapes but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give them a try. They come in a variety of styles from a boxier cat-eye as well as something more rounded.
While we may have spring on our minds, we’re not finished with winter yet. That’s why for this month’s Pretty Fix we’re styling a sweater dress with some fabulous knee-high boots! Not only are these two pieces closet staples, but they are seriously having their moment this winter! Both pieces are super on-trend but sometimes it’s just a matter of figuring out how to style them and make them work for you.
So just what is the GYPO Pretty Fix? The Pretty Fix is where we style a head-to-toe look featuring a few trends mixed in with a few closet staples. In some cases like today, the closet staples are the trends. Plus, the outfit formula below is easily able to be tailored to fit your style. As always, we recommend closet shopping first but if you have any gaps, we provide shopping links below to help you out. Now let’s check out this month’s Pretty Fix!
A solid sweater dress in a classic silhouette is a great closet staple that can be dressed up or dressed down depending on your accessories. For this Pretty Fix, we’re styling an ivory sweater dress and using the accessories to create a monochromatic look. However, if ivory isn’t your color, you can easily swap in whatever solid color you love!
2. Neutral Belt
When selecting a sweater dress you’ll want one that gives you a little shape. Look for a sweater dress that has a more fitted silhouette. If you find one that’s a little boxier than you’d like, add a belt to give it some shape. By adding a belt to your sweater dressed you’ll be able to pull it in at the waist and create a timeless silhouette.
3. Neutral Knee-High Boots
Knee-high boots are a classic closet staple that pair well with any skirt, over your favorite skinny jeans, or in this case, with a beautiful sweater dress. Finding some with a chunky block heel will aid in providing long-lasting comfort and if you don’t want a heel, opt for some flat boots. Also, pay attention to where the dress hits you. Opt for a sweat dress just slightly above the knees to pair well with knee-high boots. If you want your dress a little longer, opt for a pair of lower Chelsea boots.
4. Neutral Handbag
Having a great handbag is not only a closet staple, but one worth investing in. It’s okay to pay a little more for something you’re going to get a lot of use out of and want to carry all the time. We styled this look with a cognac brown handbag with some structure but if you want to be a little more bold you could opt for a bright handbag.
5. Chunky Gold Earrings
Since this specific sweater dress has a cowl neck, we decided to go with a chunky earring and skip the necklace. However, if your sweater dress has a neckline perfect for a necklace feel free to add something in a delicate layer to complement the chunky earrings. This dress is styled with gold earrings but silver will work too, the choice is yours!
Your turn! Have you tried the sweater dress yet this winter? Is it a heck yes or a no?

I am so glad I was part of the Fall 2019 Style Challenge. It gave me confidence and so many great outfitt ideas. The ladies in the group were very supportive and I will defintetly be doing another challenge in the future.

I’ve been participating in the GYPO Style Challenges for three years now and I’ve loved it. I’ve always loved clothes, but I didn’t know how to put outfits together. My closet is now full of mix-and-match outfits, I have learned how to dress myself, and there is no more stress in figuring out to wear. The private FB group is full of wonderful ladies that build each other up. It’s so fun and is seriously the best group on FB.

Get Your Pretty On has changed my life, seriously. I have always chased what is trendy but found from season to season, that things go out of style and I was wasting money on items that I would only end up wearing a few times. GYPO has enabled me to simplify my closet, helps me make smarter purchasing decisions, and I feel so put together and confident using the outfit formulas that are provided. This program is a GAME CHANGER. I've been following GYPO for a few years now and my only regret is not jumping on board sooner.
Michelle Kline November 20, 2019
Great community of ladies, helping each other look stylish, without breaking the bank, and using much of what you already own.
Chosen Faith November 19, 2019
GYPO challenges have been one of the best things I have done! It had taught me so much more than just creating a closet of clothes that I love but also to have confidence in myself, how to pick and choose colors that work for me instead of against, and had given a wonderful community of Pretties who are so special.
