Welcome to another edition of SAHMonday – outfit inspiration just for the stay at home and work from home moms of the world (like me!) who aren’t heading out of the house on Monday morning. You can check out the other outfits in this series here.
These outfits are perfect for when you want to feel comfortable, yet put together, so that you can face the day and any errands you may need to run. Plus, most of these outfit formulas can be pulled straight from your closet!
Plaid Shirt, Leggings and Riding Boots – Three Ways
I’m not going to lie, this outfit was not my idea. The other day at Target, I saw a girl dressed in a plaid shirt, leggings and riding boots and couldn’t wait to get home and try it out (because I, of course, was still in all of my yoga pants glory).
For my base outfit I started with my red plaid shirt (which is now on clearance). Although the shirt is long enough to wear with my ponte leggings, I like the addition of a long white tank for some extra coverage. Yes, these riding boots ARE an investment but one I promise you won’t regret. I’ve had mine for almost five years and they’re still the pair I reach for most often. On a cost per wear basis, they’ve been worth every penny!
Base Outfit
Plaid Shirt + Long Tank + Ponte Leggings + Riding Boots
This base outfit certainly works all by itself and is just right for a day at home, but I felt like it needed a topper. So I started playing around with pieces in my closet. Here are three versions that I came up with.
Outfit #1
Long Cardigan + Plaid Shirt + Ponte Leggings + Riding Boots
This cozy long beige cardigan that I got for the Fall GYPO Style Challenge has been one of my favorite and most worn new additions to my closet.
Sizing Tip: This cardigan runs big, order down a size. I’m wearing an XS.
Style Tip: Try cuffing the sleeves of your plaid shirt over the cardigan. You could also dress this up by adding a pearl statement necklace.

Outfit #2
Fur Vest + Plaid Shirt + Ponte Leggings + Riding Boots
My husband can’t resist calling me a yeti every time I wear my fur vest, but that’s not going to stop me. Embrace the yeti! I got my vest two years ago so don’t have the link to this exact one but this faux fur vest is very similar. You can usually have luck finding an inexpensive version at TJ Maxx.
These ponte leggings are the go-to pair in my closet. They’re thick and feel more like pants than leggings to me which means extra coverage!
Style Tip: If the fur vest makes you feel like a yeti, try a fur scarf instead. Fur and plaid were made for each other!

Outfit #3
Patagonia Jacket + Plaid Shirt + Ponte Leggings + Riding Boots
Here in Texas, my Patagonia Better Sweater gets a whole lot of wear. It’s perfect for layering over lightweight pieces on warmer days or under a heavier coat when it’s really cold out. It’s the casual jacket I wear most often.
Sizing Tip: I’m wearing a size small in this Patagonia Better Sweater. It’s not very roomy so if you want to layer heavier pieces, I recommend sizing up.
