Pretty Fix – Overalls

Pretty Fix – Overalls

It’s Pretty Fix time and this month I’m diving into one of this season’s polarizing trends, overalls. Love ’em or not, overalls are everywhere this spring. They are like a fun cross between jeans and a romper and whether you’ve worn them before or this is your first time exploring this trend, they are actually pretty comfortable. And just like jeans, they pretty much go with everything. Plus they come in a variety of washes, cuts, and lengths giving you plenty of options. I will, however, be the first to admit that even though I have done this trend before, it did push me a bit outside my comfort zone but that’s okay. I always encourage you all to try new things. Don’t knock it till you try it because you just may surprise yourself. That being said I’m also featuring another trend on this month’s Pretty Fix and they are high tops. I know, I know, what are we, back in the 80s? But retailers are putting a fun and almost sophisticated spin on these comfy classics by introducing them in leopard print, with metallic accents, and even snake print. The high tops I’m seeing have been updated for the times and you never know, they may be finding their way into your closet this spring.

If you are already familiar with what the Pretty Fix is, then feel free to skip down to this month’s formula but if you’re new here let me tell you what the Pretty Fix is all about. It’s where I offer up an outfit formula that features a few seasonal trends that you can easily add into your closet staples to give them a fresh look. By using a formula you’re able to adjust it to fit your lifestyle, budget, climate, and personal style to create a look you love. While I know this month’s look will be a heck yes for some and a heck no for others, it’s still easily adaptable. Simply swap out the overalls for a pair of skinny or even crop jeans and stick with the high tops or opt for a low sneaker instead. I promise there’s a little something for everyone.

Utility Jacket + Bright Top + Overalls + High or low top Sneaker

1. Utility Jacket

The perfect spring layer for those days that start out with winter temps and end up at summer temps around mid afternoon. While a neutral olive green is styled in this look you can easily swap it out for another neutral such as gray or camel. For longterm wear it’s best to go with a classic silhouette but that doesn’t mean you can’t opt for one with a hood or even a draw string you can cinch in to create a more defined waistline. You really can’t go wrong with adding this casual closet staple to your arsenal, plus it’s perfect for fall.

2. Overalls

The key to wearing overalls is similar to joggers, you don’t want them too tight but you also don’t want them too loose. There are some great relaxed or boyfriend cut overalls but again the focus is on fit. Opting for ones that also have a little stretch in them is never a bad idea. Plus you can mix it up by opting for a different wash or even overall shorts. I always suggest that even if they don’t make it past the dressing room or are now awaiting a UPS pickup to be returned, at least you gave them a try. In that case simply swap out for a pair of jeans, crops, or shorts for a complete look.

3. High or low Top Sneakers

Yes, I know, here is the second spring trend I’m throwing your way but again, it’s fun, casual, and always age-appropriate as long as they make you feel good! (This same statement goes for the overalls too) From simple solids to fun accents, high tops are everywhere this spring. I’m seeing them paired up with skinny jeans, rolled crops, and even shorts. Have fun with this trend and find ones that fit your personality and style. I’m pretty sure these leopard print high-tops will be finding their way to my closet very shortly.

4. Neutral Crossbody

Now we’re back to the classics. During the spring and summer months I find that I like to stay more casual and have my hands free as well which is why I love the crossbody style hand bag. When I saw this handbag I knew it was the perfect one to finish off this outfit formula. It’s not too big but not too small that I can’t fit the essentials in it. Plus it will pair with everything. Easily pair this up with some shorts and a bright tee in the summer and finish off with some bangle bracelets and metallic sandals. I love pieces I can enjoy for multiple seasons, don’t you?

5. Bright Top

Spring to me is all about color! Like the beautiful flowers of spring, I love it when the pastels and vibrant colors start popping up at various retailers. For this look, you can easily opt for a bright tank, short sleeve, or even a long sleeve if your climate is still a bit chilly. For those of you who recently welcomed a dumping of snow, I may even recommend a bright sweater for under your overalls. Again the key to keeping this look from feeling sloppy is fit. Look for a top that’s a little more fitted and long enough that you can successfully keep it tucked into your overalls unless you want to go for the cropped look which is also very on-trend this spring. As I said above, it’s all age-appropriate as long as you love what you’re wearing and the way you feel when you’re wearing it.

6. Hoop Earring

Classic, timeless and it’s okay to have multiple styles, sizes, and metals when it comes to your hoop earrings. This look already has a lot of great visual interest I decided to keep the jewelry simple. You can even opt for a pair of stud earrings to simplify it even more. Also, don’t be afraid to mix metals. just because the buttons and snaps on your overalls are one color does not mean you need to match it to your jewelry. Have fun and mix it up!

Your turn! Will you give overalls a try this spring?

“Behind the scenes” has always fascinated me so for a little fun today I’m sharing some of the process of writing this book. It was truly one of the most soul bearing things I’ve done in my life. If you want to learn about all of your fears, insecurities and shortcomings, then I highly recommend opening a Word doc right now and starting your very own manuscript!

I kid, I kid…sort of.

But seriously SO much of the process has been an emotional one and I honestly wouldn’t trade it for the world.

All of our journeys are not about the end result but who we become along the way.

I thought it would be fun today to share some of that emotional process with you along with some of the nuts and bolts of the process of becoming a published author. But first let’s step into the way back machine…

Fall 1991, I was a freshman at Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s branch campus in Bedford, PA (aka the Bedford County Library). This is where my college years began. It was an experimental campus in the rural county where I grew up and most kids didn’t go to college. Our professors made the 90-minute drive from Indiana, PA to teach us. I often wondered what short end of the stick they drew to get that assignment but regardless, I’m eternally grateful they did. The branch campus didn’t last long and if it hadn’t been there, I’m not sure that I would’ve graduated from college. In my two years there before transferring to main campus those professors made some of the biggest impact on my college career.

One in particular was my first college English professor. I always loved writing in high school but this felt very different. We explored more creative writing and it didn’t feel like work. I breezed through her class and easily ended the semester with a high A. During a one-on-one discussion at the end of the semester she asked me if I’d considered being an English major. I answered I wasn’t sure but secretly I felt totally unqualified. She left me with some encouragement to keep writing and advice that I am so grateful I decided to follow and that’s my practice of daily journaling. Her acknowledgment that I had some talent as a writer has stuck with me to this day. (Side note: never underestimate the impact of words of encouragement).

Through the years I realized that I’ve always had a book in my heart. When I’ve done vision exercises to picture where I’d like to be in ten years I always saw myself in a white linen outfit (WHY?, I don’t even wear linen!) at a condo at the beach, writing my book as I watched the waves roll by.

Well, let me tell you this book writing process didn’t look anything like that. At one point early on I was in West Hollywood for a speaking engagement and booked a cute little bungalow in which I fully intended to do some serious work on the book. Guess how many words I wrote? Exactly zero. Most of this book was written while I was juggling ten other commitments, creating seasonal capsule wardrobes, struggling through one of the hardest years of my life with health issues (not to mention Covid!). To top things off we decided to throw in a major move the same week that my manuscript was due. Yes I was purposely trying to make myself crazy. I wrote in spurts and blocks all over the place but never anywhere remotely glamorous.

The most important part of writing was creating the space to do it both personally and professionally. It was a season of life where many things were less than perfect. I learned to prioritize what mattered and developed the essential skill of becoming a delegation ninja.

So no it wasn’t exactly the white linen outfit by the sea! But still I wouldn’t trade it for anything and here are some lessons I learned.

Lesson #1: Feel the doubt but just keep writing.

Throughout the journey I had this nagging feeling that I wasn’t equipped to write a book about style. Or to write a book period. I’m my own worst critic when it comes to the written word (fun fact: I’m sitting here thinking that every word of this blog post is total crap!) But seriously I’m keenly aware of my limitations. Creating a critically acclaimed literary work is probably not in the cards for me.

That’s why in the intro of my book the very first thing I get honest about is my self-doubt. If you’ve followed me for long you already know that I’m not an expert but someone who is just a few steps ahead on the journey. And that’s ok. Often times it’s much more relatable that way.

If you have a book in your heart know that you may never feel fully qualified or confident in your writing. Just sit down and do it anyway.

Lesson #2: Believe in yourself (even when it feels like no one else does).

So this is the opposite of self-doubt, amiright? Sometimes you have to ignore the negative voice in your head and go confidently in the direction of your dream. I saw the success of my two self-published books The Big Book of Outfit Formulas and Get Pretty, Kick Butt! and knew that my next book deserved to be traditionally published.

So I put on my big girl pants and boldly pursued my publisher with this idea. An e-mail later and the dialogue was opened and before I make this look like the easiest thing ever, it took almost a full year from that first email to signing my book deal with Harvest House. It was well worth every minute. It gave me the opportunity to flesh out so many details in advance.  I had a working outline before I even signed on the dotted line. Speaking of signing my book deal, I didn’t have a literary agent but I did hire a really good attorney to review everything.

Lesson #3: Write YOUR truth.

At times the book felt like it was veering in a direction that wasn’t my vision. It felt more clinical and less heart-centered. Sure I understand that some aspects of it were for educational purposes but I also wanted it infused with the GYPO DNA and everything that makes it special.

Working with my amazing publishing team, we overcame this and created a style book that’s inclusive, truly for every body and budget. It’s approachable and not complicated or intimidating.  I wanted women to feel empowered after reading it and most of all I wanted them to feel confident.

Ultimately this book is the DNA of GYPO all wrapped up in one neat little package. I wanted it to be more than just some great Outfit Formulas, but rather a true handbook to make getting dressed easy.

I knew I only got one opportunity to get it right and distill everything into this little dynamo.

Lesson #4: It takes a village!

And thankfully I had one. The book was supposed to be released by now but I got sick and all of my bandwidth got sucked up into that and other spaces. I wasn’t in the headspace to finish the book so my publisher graciously gave me some extra time. Those extra months were critical to creating the book I wanted.

It took a TEAM – my business manager Lauren (whose genius is on almost every single page), my editorial coordinator Jessica (who cleaned up my bad grammar and probably deleted about 900 unnecessary commas), my Brand Builders guide Hilary (who kept me true to the heart of my brand), everyone on the Harvest House team (especially Ruth Samsel) and my uber talented illustrator Lydia were all part of this journey.

The publisher helps the process A LOT. They helped me with the outline; they edited it and polished it and made it SO much better than I ever could have.

So I’ve talked a lot about what the process was like for ME but now it’s time to tell you what the book is about for YOU. Here’s just a smidge of what to expect.

  1. Outfit Formulas, but of course! First and foremost it’s a compilation of my all time favorite easy and classic Outfit Formulas organized by season with seasonal shopping lists for each. There’s also a special section just for work wear formulas.
  2. Body Shape Guide – We had to have a way to find your unique body shape and celebrate it with pieces that fit and flatter you best. There’s a whole chapter that’s a deep dive into this process.
  3. YOUR Personal Style – Here’s something fun and new! I include a detailed framework for discovering your unique style and advice for cultivating it.
  4. Masterclass Advice – There’s also a section devoted to upping your style to the masterclass level with simple tweaks and tricks.
  5. And SO. MUCH. MORE. But I gotta save some for later 🙂

We’ll leave it at this little sampling but I’ll be sharing much more with you in the weeks and months ahead – including some sneak peeks inside.

For now I can’t thank you enough for making this journey possible. If not for the GYPO community I would certainly not have a book deal and be able to bring this into the world so thank YOU from the bottom of my heart! Oh and you know what’s really cool? You get to tell all of your friends you were part of this journey.

The Ultimate Book of Outfit Formulas A Stylish Solution to What Should I Wear? is available for preorder now and I’m forever grateful for your support!

Alison

Hallmark Winter Wear Inspired by Holiday Movies 2020

Hallmark Winter Wear Inspired by Holiday Movies 2020

Although my Christmas trees have been up since November I was a little late to the party when it came to indulging in my favorite Hallmark Holiday movies and I have to say they did not disappoint, especially in the fashion department. Whether they were new for 2020 or ones I have enjoyed in years past, I still love seeing what the characters are wearing and picking out all the trends as well as the timeless closet staples.

A few years ago I did a blog about making your own Hallmark Holiday looks, and while I’m still inspired by what I call the Hallmark Outfit Formula, I felt drawn to the different winter silhouettes this year. For instance, all those amazing jackets, scarves, hats, and gloves. Got to love Hallmark winter wear! I love the colors as well as the neutrals plus a great coat can last you for years and can easily be changed up with the right winter accessories. Below are some of my favorite Holiday Hallmark winter wear styles and where you can get a similar look!

1. If I Only Had Christmas

The character of Darcy played by Candace Cameron Bure had an incredible amount of fashion choices in the movie If I Only Had Christmas. She wore some great Blackwatch plaid items plus numerous coats paired with all sorts of hats and headbands but this combination caught my eye. I love the slate gray, almost black double-breasted coat with the festive holiday plaid scarf topped off with a burgundy/wine color hat complete with pom pom. It looks so cozy, warm, and a classic that will never go out of style.

2. A Tree Grows in Colorado

Another movie I enjoyed was A Tree Grows in Colorado. There were many great coat selections but this one popped out at me. I am a sucker for a plaid scarf but I love the way it was paired with this chocolate wool coat with the wider lapels and the extra pop of color from the yellow knit beret is the perfect finishing touch!

3. A Shoe Addict’s Christmas

A hallmark winter wear inspired look with a light brown belted wool trench coat, an ivory knitted hat with an ivory scarf.

Although on the pricey side, one coat that I keep seeing over and over again is a belted wrap coat by Ted Baker. It comes in both a short and long version as well as a few different colors. Plus, it can be seen in one of my favorite movies, A Shoe Addict’s Christmas as well as Chateau Christmas and many others. It also comes in black, a beautiful pink/raspberry color, gray, and baby pink. I did find this one by Calvin Klein that’s similar and a little more budget-friendly.

4. A Nashville Christmas Carol

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by how drawn I was to this monochromatic jacket, gloves, and scarf combination worn by Vivienne from A Nashville Christmas Carol. I think it’s the simple, clean look of the winter white coat with the white scarf and gloves that caught my eye. Her fantastic red lipstick adds the perfect pop of color but it would also look great paired up with some bright shoes!

5. If I Only Had Christmas

Okay so if you can’t tell by now I really loved the fashion choices for the movie If I Only Had Christmas and Candace Cameron Bure’s character always has fantastic winter wear. But what I really loved was the shawl collar on this jacket. Plus the pink was just a great winter color choice. While this coat wasn’t paired with the perfect hat or scarf in the movie, I decided to add them myself. What do you think of this pairing?

Five Fall Accessories Worth a Try

Five Fall Accessories Worth a Try

In keeping with the trend of making the most of shopping our closets, adding versatile pieces, and shopping on a budget, what better way to enhance our fall wardrobe without breaking the bank than to add in a few fun accessories! Normally in the spring and summer, we start to shed our layers as the temperature rises but when fall comes around, I get excited to start adding the layers back on. I love layering in light fall jackets, scarves, and great accessories. Also much like summer, the trends aren’t anything totally earth shattering but instead include some returning classics. Although these classics never really went away they haven’t been as prevalent for a few seasons. What does that mean for you? Most of these classic trend pieces may already be in your closet. Below are five of my favorite fall accessory trends!

1. Long Necklaces

Alison + Aubrey Noelle Crystal Teardrop Pendant Necklace

Long necklaces seemed like they went away for a season or two but now they are back and they are the perfect fall accessory. A long necklace is a great additional layer when wearing a scarf and it can easily add extra interest to any solid color top. Whether you choose something metal or even something with a pop of color, you can’t go wrong adding a long necklace to your accessory collection this fall.

2. Blanket Scarves/Cape Scarves

J.Crew Factory Plaid Cape-Scarf

There’s a lot of mixed feelings about the blanket scarf and sometimes even scarves in general. Sometimes it can feel like they are swallowing you up and if you live in a warmer climate forget about wanting all that material around your neck. That’s why I love that I’m also seeing cape scarves everywhere. Even though they are also big in size, they aren’t meant to go solely around your neck. They are also the perfect topper in the fall, pair amazingly with leggings and add a great pop of color or fun print to your look. They also work great for ‘column dressing’ which is where you wear the same solid color on top and bottom and then add in a fun layer. (For more examples of column dressing check out my previous Coffee Chat HERE.) The scarf pictured above is from Alison + Aubrey but unfortunately, it’s no longer available however this one from J.Crew Factory is pretty close.

3. Statement Earrings

Target SUGARFIX by BaubleBar Resin Hoop Earrings with Gold Stud

Statement earrings are also making a comeback this fall! I’m seeing them in so many fun colors and textures. They are a super easy way to add extra interest to your outfit especially if you live somewhere where it’s still pretty warm and you don’t want to wear a scarf.

4. Croc Embossed Print

H&M Croc Embossed Gray Handbag

Crocodile embossed print seems to be super popular this fall and I’m seeing it on some great accessories including belts, handbags, and shoes. If you’re not a fan of the snake print but you still want some texture, this is a great alternative and it comes in an array of colors.

5. Chunky Chains

Loft Chunky Chain Necklace

Chains and oversized chain links were around for the spring in their light acrylic designs and pastel colors. For the fall however, they are taking a slightly ‘heavier’ approach with metal finishes and layered looks. And if now after reading this you’re immediately thinking of Mr. T (because you actually know who that is) don’t. What I’m thinking of is a little lighter and doesn’t require you to work on your neck and back muscles to hold it up. The chunkier chains can be found in necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and even belts which is a great light weight option to pair to your favorite tunic to add some structure.

Earrings That Pop!

Earrings That Pop!

There are a handful of questions that I get from the GYPO community on repeat every single season without fail. One of the most common ones I hear in the summer months is, “How do I make an outfit look interesting and intentionally styled without adding layers and heat?” My first response to this is a lightweight printed kimono and my second suggestion is always fun accessories! Today I’m sharing with you some fabulous brands that have fun, bright, and trendy earrings that will add the perfect finishing touch to your look. Need a little extra outfit inspiration? Try this foolproof outfit formula – I promise you it’s a winner every time!

Solid Tee or Tank Top + Denim Shorts + Neutral Sandals + Bold Earrings

White Tortoise Triangles from Lola Ade / Forest Green Tassel Earrings from Lola Ade

Humans Before Handles

Acrylic earrings are really popular right now because they can come in so many different shapes, sizes and colors plus they don’t have a lot of weight. The acrylic chain drop earrings below also come in solid colors like white, salmon, and seafoam if that’s more your style.

Roxie Chain Drop Earrings from Humans Before Handles / Taylor Tortoise Tassel Earrings from Humans Before Handles

Esh Jewelry

Narrowing down just a few earrings to share from Esh Jewelry was incredibly difficult – you really need to visit her Etsy shop to see all of the beautiful options to choose from. All the earrings below are available in multiple color and style options plus she even carries beautiful vintage floral and cameo pieces as well. You’re certain to find something you love.
