Usually when we struggle with our wardrobe, it’s not because of a lack of clothing. In fact, many of us have way too much stuff cluttering our closets, and the sheer volume of random clothing makes it difficult to focus and #justgetdressed.
We’re constantly bombarded with images, special sales and can’t-pass-up deals that make it easy to acquire more and more stuff. Heck, I go to Target to buy light bulbs and end up with a cart filled with everything from bananas to new pajamas. Instead, what we need to do is shop with a plan, a purpose…and a well-defined list.
We also need to allocate our clothing budget in a way that makes sense. To help, I created this graphic showing where to spend your money, and where to save:

WHEN TO SPEND:
• Jeans: Cheap denim is tempting I know, but it also loses its shape and fades much more quickly than premium brands. I think everyone should own at least one pair of high quality, perfectly fitting jeans. When you find a brand you love, keep a look out for sales. I’ve even bought my favorite Paige jeans on eBay!
• Underwear (especially bras): Don’t skimp on the foundation. Invest in perfectly fitting bras and get undies that show no VPL’s (visible panty lines). While only a few people will see them, their effects are obvious.
• Jackets/Blazers: Don’t underestimate the power of fitted blazer. It can complete a work outfit and gives shape to your casual looks, providing a polished finishing touch.
• Shoes: Fabulous shoes can transform and upgrade a $20 dress. On the flip side, cheap shoes can instantly downgrade an otherwise fabulous outfit. Shoes (and handbags) are an area where quality over quality rules (my apologies to you shoe fanatics out there;)
• Coat: Your coat is something you may wear every single day and it makes a statement as you enter and exit. Invest in a coat you love that has classic staying power so you can resurrect it year after year.
WHEN TO SAVE:
• Statement Jewelry: If you know me, you know I love a funky necklace. Take your wardrobe foundations and transform them completely with the jewelry you add. The options for fabulous, inexpensive jewelry are endless. The key is to find pieces that are inexpensive without looking “cheap”.
• Occasion Items: Special Occasion = Infrequent Use. Don’t spend a fortune on glitzy bags, earrings or metallic heels when there are plenty of inexpensive options out there. Instead invest in a fabulous dress that’ll be ready for you when the invitation arrives.
• Tee, Tanks & Knits: Premium knits made from fine, soft fibers often get holes and stains (think armpit) quicker than their bargain alternatives. It’s a good idea to have a couple quality cashmere sweaters, but for tees and layering pieces, make sure they flatter — but go for the bargains.
• Scarves: When you see a scarf that speaks to you and it’s a good deal, grab it. Like statement jewelry, scarves are a fantastic and affordable way to add color and pattern to your wardrobe essentials….and display your individual personality.
In a nutshell:
SPEND: Frequent Use • Durable • Classic • Essentials • Signature Items
SAVE: Delicate • Low Use • Trendy • Accent Pieces

Before a fashion challenge or shopping for a new seasonal wardrobe, it’s important to sort and purge closets and drawers, removing unnecessary items. But once that process is complete, it’s time to glam up the closet! Keep reading to learn some “high and low” options for bringing some style to your clothing storage spaces. From adding inexpensive drawer liners and swapping out hangers, to adding a glam light fixture and painting an accent wall, there are many things that can be done to put the icing on the cake!
LOW TIME & FINANCIAL COMMITMENT
Add drawer liners. My favorites are the lightly scented ones from Crabtree & Evelyn but many other brands are available on Amazon. If you like the look of pretty drawers without the scent, try contact paper, leftover wallpaper, or gift wrap. (If you go with gift wrap, make sure it’s the sturdy kind.) Measure, cut, and tack down with a few dots of glue or double-stick tape. Or add a scented sachet of lavender, citrus, or cedar to your drawers or closet. Available for purchase on Amazon or at home good stores, or make your own with yummy essential oils available at your natural foods store.
Swap out your hangers. This means getting rid of all of your dry-cleaner’s wire ones! They get tangled and are not sturdy enough. Out they go. Replace with one or two standard types. Try white plastic tube, velvet “huggable,” sturdy wooden, metal pants, or whatever suits your fancy. And for goodness sake, face them all the same direction!

Organize your jewelry. There are many options to store your jewelry inside a top drawer in divided boxes, on top of a dresser on a stand, or hanging on a wall. Are you a displayer or a tuck-away gal? Is out-of-sight also out-of-mind? Perhaps you could store away things you don’t use often, and display or keep out the pieces that you wear frequently or want to remember to wear!
Add drawer organizers. There are many to be found at The Container Store in every shape and size. They will allow you to divide and contain underthings or keep flimsy camisoles and t-shirts in line. Or you can make your own using old shoeboxes or cardboard.
MEDIUM TIME & FINANCIAL COMMITMENT
Paint the closet walls. Yes, this could be an undertaking. But you’re taking everything out of the closet anyways, so now is the time to do it! Give it a clean, fresh coat of light-colored paint that makes you smile. This reflects the light and gives you a solid neutral background to view your clothing against. Or go a step further and wallpaper the closet, or just one accent wall for a huge impact.
Add a new light fixture. This is especially important if you have no (or poor) lighting in your closet. If you have a walk-in closet, consider the impact of a fabulous chandelier in this space. Wow! It doesn’t have to be expensive. Even Ikea has some great ones for less than $100.
Add some artwork. Search art.com for a piece of artwork that will make you smile every day. Or simply enlarge a favorite family photo and pop it in a pre-matted frame. If you don’t have any wall space in your closet (those without walk-ins), perhaps you could frame a small photo that makes you happy, and place it on a shelf.
HIGH TIME & FINANCIAL COMMITMENT
Install a new closet system. This can be done on a budget! Sometimes it’s as simple as moving up a single-hanging rod a bit higher and then adding another below it. If it’s time for an entire closet system, check out Home Depot or Lowe’s. Bring measurements and they can help design your perfect closet. If you’re handy, you can install it yourself, or hire a handyman to do it for you. If you want something fabulous, check out the elfa® line from The Container Store. It is modular, super-sturdy, attractive and well worth the investment.

In my 20-plus years as a fashion writer, editor and stylist, I’ve overhauled hundreds of closets. And whether large or small, fancy or functional, every woman ultimately faces the same challenge. And no, it’s not organizing her closet. It’s keeping it organized. But maintaining your closet doesn’t have to be an endless cycle of drudgery, like laundry or lunges. A perpetually organized closet is achievable. It just takes a system.
As a busy mom, I know that ten minutes is a treasure and an hour is an eternity, so closet cleanouts for myself and my busy clients have to be super speedy. The secret? Go with your gut. While I appreciate the Konmari method of cleaning out your closet, it’s not for the faint of heart or the short on time. Instead, I rely on an expedited system that allows me to get through most closets in an hour or two, tops, and it can be summed up in 4 simple steps.
1. Sort by Category: Start by addressing a single category at a time. Take all of your tops, for example, and move them out of the closet and onto a rack, if you have one, or your bed. Then, as quickly as possible, flip through the tops and give each top a Yes if you’re keeping it and a No if you’re tossing it. Yes-no-yes-no. Don’t overthink it. You want to go with your first reaction to the item. You know what you love and what you wear, so be honest with yourself. Here are some additional guidelines on what to keep and what to toss.
Keep: Clothes that you love, wear, get compliments on, fit well, flatter your body type and are in good condition. You may also choose to keep a couple of items that don’t fit properly, but that you love and can be easily altered. Put these in an Alterations pile and get them out of the closet right away.
Toss: Anything that is dated, worn/stained/pilled, unflattering, ill-fitting (and not worth altering), or, for some other reason (lifestyle, boredom, etc.) never gets worn.
2. Deal with the Discards: Now take your toss pile, and, again acting quickly, divide them into 3 categories: Donate Now, Donate Later, and Consign. Donate Now is for items that are in good condition but don’t have much resale value. Consign, if you choose to try it, is for brand name items in great condition. And Donate Later is for items that you know need to go, but can’t bear to part with. Yet. Stash your Donate Later items in an inconvenient place, and mark your calendar for 3 months from now. If you can’t remember what you hid away, and haven’t missed any of it, then out it goes. (Note: You can set one bin aside for items that are truly sentimental, if you wish. But just one bin.)
Hint: Many of us use this step as a way of sneaking some items back into our closets, so if this is you, and the temptation is too great, you may want to put the entire discard pile in a bin and sort through it in a few weeks.
3. Organize the Rest: Now that those pesky discards are out of your closet, it’s time to organize what’s left. Professional stylists and closet organizers all have different methods, but the most common is to organize by category (tops, skirts, etc.), then by sleeve length, and then by color. I organize clothes by the colors of the rainbow, ROYGBIV, with white at one end and black at the other. It’s an easy system to remember, which is key to maintaining any system.
Color coding your closet will give you the same calm serene feeling that you get when you walk into an upscale boutique, and it also makes it easy to spot the colors you have and those that are missing.
And while categorizing and color coding are essential, an organized closet also requires the right tools. Here, 3 items that every closet needs:
- Velvet Hangers: Flat, velvety hangers are everywhere right now (I even spotted some at the dollar store), and there’s a good reason for their popularity. Their flat shape means they actually buy you up to 1/3 more space in your closet, and the velvety finish protects clothes and keeps them from slipping off. In my opinion, the best buys on these are at Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, and off-price stores like Ross and Marshall’s.
- A Valet Rod: If you can find the space for one, a valet rod is one of the most useful tools to have in your closet. It allows you to put out the next day’s outfit, compare a few items, or even let an item hang dry.
- Open Jewelry Storage: If you can’t see it, you won’t wear it, which is why I love open jewelry storage that allows you to see all of your jewelry at once. I prefer hanging organizers for necklaces and flat organizers for bracelets, rings, and earrings, but find a system that works for you. Pinterest is a great source for inspiration if you want to make your own, or check the dozens of options at sites like All Modern, The Container Store and Amazon.
4. Tap into Technology: I have a couple of clients that favor printouts of outfit ideas in binders that they keep in their closets, but the vast majority of women prefer to simplify their wardrobe planning with technology. Fortunately, there is no shortage of apps available for this. Here, my 3 favorites:
- Capsules by Cladwell: This ingenious app talks you through the process of creating a workable, minimal capsule wardrobe starting with the items you already own. You start with an inspiration board, pick a palette, and then choose the pieces that you need for your lifestyle. Ingenious!
- StyleBook: This app, which is only available for iOS devices, lets you photograph and catalog your entire wardrobe and combine pieces you own with pieces you are considering to create outfits. The only downside? It can be tricky to take the perfect shot, and you can’t share your looks with anyone.
- Hue & Stripe: Designed to be used with a stylist, this system allows you and your stylist to upload multiple items at once, manage your closet, create lookbooks with your existing clothes, shop, and combine your finds with your existing wardrobe. I love that it’s simple, elegant and easy for both you and a stylist to use.
Okay, so now your closet is organized. How are you going to keep it that way?

You start where all closet problems begin – at the store. It’s called shopping S.M.A.R.T. Shopping S.M.A.R.T. is really about conscious shopping, not shopping impulsively or reflexively or out of boredom. A closet full of impulse buys is doomed to be a closet full of ill-fitting clothes that don’t go with anything else, and you end up with an overstuffed closet and nothing to wear. The key to cutting back on closet clutter is to keep the future reject pile out of your closet to begin with, and these 5 simple steps can help.
S: Start with your Shape. Understanding your body type is essential when shopping to fit and flatter it. Knowing what works for your body helps you channel your efforts and save time. I offer a free body type analysis with clothing recommendations that can help make shopping foolproof.
M: Make a list. Start with the items you know are missing from your wardrobe. This is an especially useful step after a closet overhaul, when you are better able to identify the gaps in your closet, and the new trends you want to add to your wardrobe.
A: Avoid an unplanned splurge. If it’s not on your list but you see it, love it, and absolutely positively have to have it, then put it on hold until the next day. If you still want it, go for it.
R: Repeat the piece 3 ways. Before purchasing an item, make sure that you can wear it 3 different ways. If it doesn’t work with your wardrobe, it needs to go back.
T: Tags stay on until worn. We are all in a hurry to wear the newest, cutest items in our closets, so if it’s still hanging there weeks later, unworn (and it’s in season), return it!
These four steps – Sort by Category, Deal with the Discards, Organize the Rest and Tap Into Technology – are the same ones I use with my own clients, and they work with everyone, regardless of budget, lifestyle or closet size. Cleaning out your closet may be simple, but it’s not easy, which is why a framework like this can be so useful.
You owe it to yourself to dive into your closet, and make it work for you, or to hire a stylist to help you if you’re overwhelmed. Unloved, unworn clothes feel like dead weight, and they drag you down every time you enter your closet. Freeing yourself from them, and organizing the clothes you love in a thoughtful, personal way, is truly a gift to yourself, one that can change how you approach getting dressed every single day.

The Pretty Fix is a monthly feature at Get Your Pretty On that features my top five picks for the month that you can shop for on your own to stay in style…all at a price you’ll love. The idea for it was born out of frustration that some of you have had with other monthly box services that you feel “miss the mark” or are too pricey.
Each month, the Pretty Fix includes five items that I personally recommend to stay on trend. This month features pieces to get your spring 2016 wardrobe started off on the right foot. Each item represents one of the hottest spring trends.
Oh and the best part? You can get every piece in the fix for around $100 total.
Consider me your budget-minded personal shopper. Here’s your March Pretty Fix.

MARCH PRETTY FIX TOTAL = $117.50
Spring Trend: Boho
The floppy hat is a boho basic that’s big for spring. It’s going to be great with everything from spring dresses to t-shirts and jeans. If wearing a hat feels like “too much” for every day, try one when you’re on spring break or when spending time out in the sun.
Spring Trend: Floral
A pretty floral scarf is an instant way to add some spring style to your outfit. Use the colors in your scarf for inspiration to create the rest of your outfit around it.
Spring Trend: Pastels
This pink nail polish is a go-with-everything neutral pastel that looks great on fingers and toes.
Spring Trend: Neutral Booties
If you don’t have a pair of neutral peep toe booties yet, RUN, don’t walk to get this pair. They are as soft as butter and the comfiest heels I’ve ever owned. They look great with skirts, dresses, cuffed jeans, flared jeans, you name it. This will be your most worn pair of shoes for spring, I promise!
Spring Trend: Tassels
Tassels are definitely having a moment. Try this easy trend with a tassel necklace that you’ll want to wear every day. Here’s a similar tassel necklace.

Style challenges change lives.
When I ask for feedback from challengers, this is the one thing that I hear over and over again. Many of the women who participate in these challenges have life changing experiences.
It’s something that’s hard to explain to someone who hasn’t been through one. How could a shopping list with 21 days of outfits really change someone’s life?
Because it’s not about the shopping list or outfits, it’s about so much more.
When I did the first Style Me Pretty Challenge earlier this year, it was to provide a way to make a personal stylist affordable to every woman. My goal is for all of us to feel pretty every day.
What I didn’t realize is that it would lead to so much more.
These women find something that a lot of them thought they had lost. They find confidence, better self-esteem, improved health and relationships and lasting friendships with a tribe of other women just like them.
And no, I’m not giving myself credit in any way. These women are the ones doing all of the work.
Because it’s so hard for me to put into words, I thought I’d share some stories and confident, smiling faces from the Fall Style Me Pretty Challenge with you today.
“As a first-time participant in the Style Me Pretty Challenge, let me just say that it has definitely had a positive impact on me. I feel much more confident in knowing how to incorporate colors and patterns in my wardrobe and am learning to step out of my comfort zone and try something new that I may not have worn before! The positive comments, compliments, and encouragement from fellow challengers is so uplifting ~ you ladies really know how to make a girl feel good about herself! Best of all, knowing ahead of time what to wear the next day is such a time saver! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us and helping me gain some much needed self confidence!” – Jill E.
“I’m currently living the dream…I’m a new mom to a 16 month old little girl and married to a wonderful man (he’s younger to boot!) I work from home 50+ hours a week, so it’s easy to get stuck in a rut of t-shirts and sweats, because I really have no where to go and no one else is going to see me. I recently gave up on the idea that I was ever going to fit back in to my pre-baby clothes, coming to the realization that our bodies are just different after giving birth. So, hesitantly, I threw out nearly everything in my closet with the mindset that I will embrace this new body and start shopping for my body today, not my body 2 years ago. My dearest friend told me about you and this style challenge, so I jumped at the chance to join. It sure has been a fun experience. I can absolutely say that it has changed my life for the better. I feel better because I know I look better, and that goes a long way each and every day, both professionally and personally. I get compliments every time I step out of the house, and of course my husband loves the new looks. I didn’t realize how my dressing down every day was affecting him as well. What’s so great about this challenge is how easy you make it for us newbies, and then the Facebook group just lets women empower each other with compliments, advice, etc. It goes way beyond clothes! Thank you for what you are doing! You are touching thousands of women in ways I bet you had never considered. Keep on rockin’ it!” – Becky W.

“As a busy stay at home mom of three, fashion hasn’t been my priority since my first child was born almost 7 years ago. I have literally gained and lost 140 lbs over the course of three pregnancies and now that I am finally back at my goal weight, it felt so awesome to go shopping again! With Alison’s list in my hands, I went on a shopping marathon and I have been so pleased with my purchases. It feels amazing to have my outfits picked out for me the night before. No more staying in my PJs all day or wearing my yoga pants for the 99th time. It is hard to be in a bad mood when you are in a fabulous outfit! It may seem silly, but this challenge has given my self esteem a big boost and as a result, I am nicer to everyone around me. Thank you Alison!” – Sheryl J.

“I’m not sure where to start but I think it is best to begin with the shopping list. This tool has changed the way I shop. Instead of wandering aimlessly through the mall trying to find what is in style, I now have a guide for both the season and what is in style. Next would be the daily outfits. In the beginning, I thought I had to mirror them exactly. After the Facebook group began posting, I realized I feel better about myself and my outfit when I tailor it to my colors and body shape. However, the basic principle is provided for me to have a visual idea of what I’m trying to put together. Lastly would be how my confidence has grown to try things that are outside my comfort zone and embrace the tall person I am today. With this knowledge, I’ve been able to adapt my outfits using things I pin on Pinterest as well. I’m so happy that I stumbled across your blog. It has been such an inspiration for me and I thank you from the bottom of my heart!” – Bonnie B.

“After the birth of my second child I have lived in yoga pants and my hair in a pony. He is two now, but is a horrible sleeper, up at all hours every night. I am always exhausted and unmotivated to take care of myself. Your challenge has kicked my butt into getting dressed for the day and having a routine for ME! I may not do anything outside of the house, but I feel like I get more accomplished around the house when I am put together!” – Jessica D.
“Thank you for giving me some direction and guidance for it has helped me take more interest in making me be the best all around me that I can possibly be.” – Deeanne P.
“Thank you for making getting dressed in the morning fun again…like the movie Groundhog Day, I feel like every morning is the first day of school and I am excited about all of the new ways I have to wear my clothes!! The best part of the challenges for me has been the ease with which I am able to create my own outfits and get dressed for almost any activity. BC (in this case)=Before Challenge, I would stand in my closet and look at all of my clothes but not be able to figure out what to wear. Now, no matter the season, the weather or the occasion, I feel like I have the pieces to (pack and) put together appropriate outfits. I no longer wonder if what I am wearing is age appropriate because I feel comfortable and confident in every challenge outfit. Sure, some of the pieces are a step or two out of my comfort zone but that’s what makes these challenges great. They CHALLENGE YOU! They challenge you to try something new, to use the essential pieces in outfits you adapt to fit your lifestyle. Since my retirement, I have been rediscovering myself from the inside out…BUT I have also been rediscovering myself from the outside in!” – Leslie C.

“This fall challenge has been so good for me, I’m learning so much about putting outfits together, but the best part to me has been the support from other women! Women can be hard on each other! But this group of women is just fabulous and so sweet in offering suggestions and help in such a lovely way! My husband has had a blast taking my picture and seeing what I’m going to put together each day! Young moms at church say “I hope I look like you do when I’m your age!” And, that is such a nice feeling.” – Susie B.
“This Challenge has been exactly what I needed! Fashion has never been my thing. My focus has always been my kids and husband and house decorating. Shopping for clothes was something I dreaded and only looked for something new for Holidays or a special occasion and my wardrobe reflected that. Now, I love shopping for clothes because I know what I’m looking for and this casual chic style is spot on for me. 🙂 Thank you so much Alison for giving me the ability to feel confident again!” – Sandi M.

“Thank you for the time and effort you have invested in creating stylish, casual outfits that can be worn by women of any shape, size or age! I’ve been feeling the need and on the lookout for something such as your Style Challenges for years and am so happy I found out about them in time to join the Fall Challenge. I’ve learned so much during this Fall Challenge. I’ve learned some fashion rules to follow (leopard is a neutral and goes with anything) and some fashion rules to break (It doesn’t have to “match”, it just has to “go”). I have found the most interesting thing though, is the word CHALLENGE. It is truly a challenge to trust someone else with what we are going to wear every day! There have been days when I didn’t think a particular outfit was going to look good on me, but I challenged myself to put it on and take a picture anyway. There have been other days when I didn’t think I had the right components to complete an outfit. But I challenged myself to take a second look at my Challenge pieces, scour my closet, and be persistent until I found a combination that fit the guidelines of the day and that I felt comfortable in. In both instances, I ended up discovering a new way of dressing that suited my taste, and made me feel up to date. Whereas, if I would have not trusted your judgment and challenged myself to see each day’s outfit through to completion, I would be stuck in my old wardrobe rut, growing frumpier and frumpier with each passing year. One day it occurred to me that this challenge is a good life lesson to not be prideful and think we know what is best for ourselves, but to humble ourselves, and admit that we could use some help. If we would always be as open to suggestions as we have been during this Challenge, our lives would be so much richer and fuller and more vibrant in every area! Thank you once again for everything!”- Nancy C.

“You have made my mornings much less stressful, and I feel better about myself because I know I look better (than I would have otherwise)! The shopping wasn’t too much, and I had a number of things on the list anyway. The bonus is that my husband (who always would say he didn’t care what I wore) has been telling me how sexy I look! Definitely worth $30 to you for that! Thank you so much!” – Alyssa W.
“I am a busy 30-something mom with two year old twin girls and I also own a financial planning company with my husband. It has been a tremendous help for me to plan my outfits the night before and to see ideas for mix-and-matching to get more mileage out of clothes I already own. I tend to wear things just as they are displayed in stores when I purchase them and don’t take the time to think of other styling options. I was amazed at how many of the items in your challenges I already owned, but had never realized how many ways they could be styled! Thank you so much for all that you do!” – Jessica H.
“When I got married I was a size 2 I am now a size 8. I am 5ft 2 inches. As you can imagine my self-confidence is almost nonexistent. After being told for 25 years that no one else would ever want me …I believe it. I have no idea how to dress my bigger size and I stumbled upon your blog and love to see the basics and how to put all of this together. I am learning! Being a single mom of a college student I do not have a huge clothing budget and the fact that some of these things are not expensive is awesome!! I thought I was too old for riding boots and for leggings…..and still haven’t worn them but I have to admit I have bought them. Thank you!! THANK YOU! I look forward to your email and will be lost without it!” – Name Withheld
I am truly, truly BLESSED to be a small part of this and humbled beyond belief. Thank you all for sharing your stories with me!
