Over the weekend, Craig and I planned a mini getaway for our 15th anniversary. Although we usually go out of town each year, we decided to stay local this time and booked a night at a hotel close to home. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss our usual getaway, it’s always one of the highlights of our year. But with a son heading off to college today, it seemed more prudent to stay close to home.
Did I mention he’s moving in TODAY? Mama’s freaking out just a little. 🙁
Since we’re squeezing in as much family time as possible before he goes, we took the kids to brunch to celebrate our anniversary with us. I felt comfortable and put together in this maxi skirt, tank top and denim jacket.

My new St. Anne Tote from Barrington Gifts was perfect for our weekend getaway. This tote bag is big but very lightweight so it’s great for everyday. I can hardly believe it, but today is our last installment in the simple summer series. Since summer will soon be over, I decided this would be the perfect time to share my version of “in between” simple transitional style.

As the seasons start to change, sometimes an outfit has to do double duty in the course of a day. Especially in Texas where the weather can be pretty bi-polar! Days usually start off really warm but may end up feeling more fall-like before they’re over.
In late summer, my typical summer uniform of shorts, a tank top and flip flops transitions slightly to cuffed jeans, a tank top and flip flops. This is such an easy outfit to wear for just about anything, dropping the kids off at school, running errands or even a casual lunch with friends.
But during the “in between” sometimes (if we’re lucky) there’s a nip in the air. All this outfit needs for a quick transition is a stylish and comfy sweatshirt like this one from ILY Couture. Presto change-o!

The Work Wear Challenge opened on Monday so I thought it would be fun to revisit one of my favorite ways to dress up jeans to make them office appropriate. Colored denim can work great for a business casual office environment. The key is to pair it with sophisticated separates like a white button down and blazer. Outfits like this make me *almost* wish I worked in an office again!

For July’s simplified look, I decided to showcase my favorite go-to way to dress up for a summer date night – all black. There’s truly nothing easier. It always looks classy and can be dressed up or down with ease. Just start with a basic black tank and shorts then add some fun accessories like a leopard clutch, a pair of heels and some gold jewelry to finish it out. You can swap out the heels for a pair for metallic sandals for a more casual night.

My style goal this summer was to break out of the daily summer rut of my typical tank top, shorts and flip flops. It may not sound that hard but it has been. Mainly because it’s HOT in Texas so that severely limits my options, especially when it comes to layering.
So when I paired up this outfit wearing my favorite chambray, a bubblegum pink tank and my embroidered whale shorts, I was pretty excited. The layers are light enough to work even on a hot day and let’s talk about these shorts for a second. I may have squealed with delight (and embarrassed my daughter) when I found them at Marshall’s. They are just so darn cute! Every time I wear them, I get compliments from strangers. (You can find some similar pairs here and here.)
