Winter work wear can be a little tricky. Sometimes it’s hard to balance warmth with work appropriate. I don’t know about you but back in my corporate America days my office felt more like a meat locker. If you know me well, you also know that being cold is one of my least favorite things in the world. So, of course I came up with a solution – an illegally smuggled space heater hidden under my desk. 🙂
I’m certainly not encouraging you to do anything to jeopardize your job. There are definitely better ways to stay warm, like wearing the pieces from my list of 10 winter work wear essentials.
I’m willing to bet you already have quite a few of these pieces in your closet. If not, remember that these items are classics that will stand the test of time. My rule of thumb is to invest a little more into quality if you’re planning to get more mileage out of them.
Keep your pieces neutral or in the same color palette to get the most wear out of them. You can always add in color with scarves and accessories.

Christmas shopping for our kids gets harder every year. They are now almost 21, 17 and 12 and not really lovers of “stuff”. So this year my husband and I had to get creative. We decided to focus more on experiences than on stuff so we’re taking them on a pre-Christmas vacation to NYC!
NYC at Christmas is more my bucket list item than theirs but shhhh….they don’t need to know that. I’ve always dreamt of seeing the store window displays, the tree at Rockefeller Center and skating in Central Park – and of course eating lots and lots of amazing food and taking in a show or two!
I’m sure I’m romanticizing it a bit and we already know that it’s going to be COLD, especially for our thin Texas blood. So, as the family stylist, I’ve started putting together some cold weather outfits for everyone.
The guys, my husband Craig and son Devon, have it the worst. Their winter wardrobes are virtually non-existent so I’m starting with them first. Today I’m sharing one of those wintery outfits in this month’s Menswear Fix.
Earlier this fall, I created a 14 day capsule wardrobe for men, the Fall 2016 Menswear Bootcamp. It went over so well that I’ve decided to start offering you with a monthly resource, similar to the Pretty Fix but for the guys. Since Pretty Fix doesn’t quite work in this case, let’s just simply call it the Menswear Fix. 🙂
Here are the five pieces I recommend for your guy to stay warm and on trend this month.
If you liked the pieces in this month’s menswear fix, then you’ll love the Fall 2016 Menswear Bootcamp. For only $19, you’ll get a fall shopping list of menswear classics and trends plus 14 days of mix and match outfit ideas perfect for updating his wardrobe. Learn more and sign up HERE.
It’s fall, and that means plaid is everywhere – in shirts and scarves, bedding and blankets, dishes and decorations. I was in Target the other day, and I kept telling myself: “You have enough plaid. You have enough plaid.” I’m not sure I believe that, but it did help me keep my total down at checkout!
Most of the pictures I see on Pinterest show plaid styled in a casual way – with leggings, a puffer vest, and Hunter rain boots or with skinny cords and riding boots. I love those ideas, but I wondered what a dressier plaid shirt outfit would look like. I found this cute shirt from J. Crew and styled it with a black pencil skirt and pumps for a work-appropriate look and with skinny jeans and peep toe booties for a casual outfit. What do you think?
I love the ruffle on this plaid shirt – it dresses it up a bit. I don’t work in an office, but if I did, I think I would try this shirt with a pencil skirt and black pumps.
My exact shirt is sold out, but Nordstrom has this cute tunic with a similar pattern. These from Lands’End, Gap, and Old Navy are cute, too, and check out this post for 16 more plaid shirt options!
I styled a plaid shirt five different ways for the Kelly Gartner Style Fall 2016 Challenge, a 27-piece capsule wardrobe that will help you look and feel fabulous in what you’re wearing every day. It’s an easy, affordable way to have your own personal stylist help you shop and put together outfits this fall.

ABOUT KELLY
I am a native Houstonian, former teacher, personal stylist, and closet organizer. I have a closet full of clothes, shoes, and accessories that I love– I actually enjoy getting dressed in the morning!– but that wasn’t always the case.
Six years ago, I was a teacher in a fashion rut. I reached for the same clothes day after day, and I didn’t care whether or not I looked stylish. That changed when I became a stylist for Stella & Dot, a jewelry and accessories company.
I realized I needed to upgrade my wardrobe to complement the beautiful jewelry I was wearing, so I went shopping and bought a black sweater set, a grey skirt, and black heeled boots. I remember putting on a bold necklace of pearls intertwined with sparkly cupchains, tied with a pink grosgrain ribbon, and feeling like a new person!
I created the Kelly Gartner Style Fall 2016 Challenge because I want you to have that feeling, too, but I know you’re busy and don’t have time to spend hours shopping and putting outfits together. The Style Challenge is a tool to help you shop with a purpose and build a mix-and-match wardrobe of clothes, shoes, and accessories you will wear season after season.
I hope you will join us so you can say goodbye to stress and indecision in the morning, and say hello to looking and feeling great every time you walk out the door!
One of the hottest summer 2016 fashion trends is “off the shoulder”. If you think this trend isn’t for you, check out these four easy ways to pair it up that might just change your mind.
What’s your go-to brand of jeans? It’s no secret that I have trouble finding jeans that fit me well. I’ve lamented on this topic many times on GYPO. My waist to hip ratio makes it hard to find a pair that doesn’t gap at the waist yet is wide enough for my hips.
For this month’s What I’m Really Wearing, I’m collaborating with one of my favorite brands that always fit me, Lucky Brand jeans. They have many different fits and styles so it’s easy to find one that works for each individual body type. Not only do they fit like a glove, they’re also very comfortable, hold their shape well and the washes and details are always on trend.
The pair that I’m wearing in this outfit is the Hayden Skinny Ankle Jean. It’s a higher waisted jean so I can bend over without worry about revealing anything I don’t want to! As summer approaches, I’m planning to pair mine up with some easy, breezy tops and fun accessories like these from Lucky Brand for an outfit formula that works for just about anything. Dress it up with a pair of nude heeled sandals. Or cuff the jeans and add your favorite flip flop or flat metallic sandal for a casual, yet put together look that’s cool and comfortable.
The fun abalone accessories go great with the colors and pattern on this top. If you’re wearing a striking pattern, it’s always a good rule of thumb to keep your accessories simple and let the print be the star of the show.
Lucky Brand also has a great selection of easy summer dresses to make it as simple as possible to get dressed every day.

I’ve been participating in the GYPO Style Challenges for three years now and I’ve loved it. I’ve always loved clothes, but I didn’t know how to put outfits together. My closet is now full of mix-and-match outfits, I have learned how to dress myself, and there is no more stress in figuring out to wear. The private FB group is full of wonderful ladies that build each other up. It’s so fun and is seriously the best group on FB.

Get Your Pretty On has changed my life, seriously. I have always chased what is trendy but found from season to season, that things go out of style and I was wasting money on items that I would only end up wearing a few times. GYPO has enabled me to simplify my closet, helps me make smarter purchasing decisions, and I feel so put together and confident using the outfit formulas that are provided. This program is a GAME CHANGER. I've been following GYPO for a few years now and my only regret is not jumping on board sooner.

Great community of ladies, helping each other look stylish, without breaking the bank, and using much of what you already own.
Chosen Faith November 19, 2019
GYPO challenges have been one of the best things I have done! It had taught me so much more than just creating a closet of clothes that I love but also to have confidence in myself, how to pick and choose colors that work for me instead of against, and had given a wonderful community of Pretties who are so special.
