5 Fall Outfit Formulas 2020

5 Fall Outfit Formulas 2020

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!!! At least that’s how I feel about fall. Even with everything going on I’m choosing to enjoy the coming change of seasons and focus on what I can control and that includes taking delight in my fall scented candles, my cinnamon dolce lattes, and the transitioning of my closet from shorts and flip flops to sweaters and boots.

I realize we’re all going into a new normal this fall. Whatever your fall looks like I wanted to help simplify your getting ready process by giving you Five Outfit Formulas You Need This Fall to help you take on your day, whatever it may hold. While the outfit formulas are below, I also have a free download that you can get HERE. It has a convenient checklist and more links if you have any gaps to fill in.

For me, fall holds some of my favorite colors and although the trends this season are simple it doesn’t mean I love them any less, it just means I’m able to shop my closet more. That’s why I’m so excited about the Outfit Formulas® Fall 2020 Capsule Wardrobe! It’s a perfect mix of closet shopping but you can also easily add in some new pieces to ‘freshen’ up your look if you want to. The five fall outfit formulas below showcase this mix of closet staples and trends and they’re just part of what you’ll see in the Outfit Formulas™ Fall 2020 Capsule Wardrobe which is now available. What fall item are you most excited about wearing?

Day One

Solid Top + Black Bottoms + Leopard Shoes

While the rust sweater is new, everything else is from shopping my closet. Rust is a huge color this fall and I’m so in love with it!

Day Two

Moto Jacket + White Tee + Gray Bottoms + Snake Print Shoes

I love that I was able to shop my closet for this look too. A few years ago I finally decided it was time to invest in great quality moto jacket and I’m so happy I did! This has been one of my favorite go-to pieces and I wear it all the time!

Day Three

Fall Color Cardigan + Graphic Tee + Boyfriend Jeans + White Sneakers

If you watch my latest 5 Ways to Wear It then you know how much I love the graphic tee! I’m wearing everything mentioned above and even though the Beatles graphic tee is out of stock there’s a chance it may come back. Good thing is that the options of graphic tees are endless so find one that speaks to you!

Day Four

Printed Top + Olive Bottoms + Taupe Booties

I was able to closet shop the olive bottoms and taupe boots but I was really excited to add this rust printed top from Old Navy.

Day Five

Denim Jacket + Camo Top + White Bottoms + White Sneakers

White after Labor Day is a heck yes for me and I am so excited about this outfit formula! Everything is closet shopped except for my camo top which I got at Old Navy. As far as I’m concerned they are crushing fall this year!

Falling in Love with Fuchsia and Plum

Falling in Love with Fuchsia and Plum

Thank you Ann Taylor for partnering on this post.

Want to know the easiest way to update your work wear look for fall? Just add color!

Bright color is everywhere for fall 2019 and combining fuchsia with plum has to be one of my favorite ways to wear it. You can go as bold or subtle as you want with either an all over monochromatic look with a pop of bright color or a bolder punch with all over color. You can’t go wrong when combining these two colors!

The pieces in both of these looks have so much versatility! Even if you don’t work in an office, the plum blouse and fuchsia sweater would both be adorable paired up with jeans. Just add the bright suede bow heels to finish out either look.

Sidenote: Don’t you just love how both of these outfits perfectly coordinate with the decor and color of my favorite coffee shop? Their raspberry iced green tea made for a darling accessory!

I instantly fell in love with this seasonless yarn sweater. It’s lightweight and comfortable enough to wear during the summer to fall transition.

This textured button pencil skirt is not only super comfortable but also very flattering for all body types!

Payday Pretty | BYOB – To a Tee

Payday Pretty | BYOB – To a Tee

Hello, pretties and a post-Christmas TGIF to you!  Welcome to week five of Build Your Outfit Basics.  If you’re new here, let me catch you up.  BYOB is a six week series built around my Five Wardrobe Basics for Real Moms.  Each week I feature one of my favorite outfit builders along with some affordable options to help you build or add onto your own wardrobe.

In week one, I featured dark wash skinny jeans.  Week two was all about fabulous, cute and comfy flats, week three featured one of my favorites, scarves and in week four I confessed to my total obsession with cardigans.

Week Five’s outfit builders lay the foundation for just about any look – tees and tanks.  If you’ve followed me for long, you’ve probably already noticed that I layer a tee or tank under almost everything.

Like these looks starring my gray and taupe tanks.

My drawer full of tanks gets accessed year-round.  There’s just something that feels right about layering, I can’t quite explain it but I do it almost every day.  And these long tanks from Forever 21 are my absolute favorites and are only $4.80 each! I have one in ever color of the rainbow.

Although tanks tops are my main go-to layering piece, I also wear a lot of t-shirts.  They work great under cardigans and sweaters or on their own with a statement necklace or scarf.

Here are some of my fave basic tanks and tees.

Tissue Tees are the perfect weight for layering.  Here’s one that I love.

I love the longer length and shirred sides of this tee.

[Chambray Shirt:  Madewell]

While I was writing this post, I started thinking about some other favorite basics that I wear on a regular basis.  One of my fall purchases kept coming to mind – my denim shirt.  Denim shirts, and their lighter weight cousin chambray are CRAZY versatile!

Here are some ways to pair them up:

Under cardigans and sweaters

Over tank tops as a jacket

Belted with a maxi skirt

With leggings, riding boots and a scarf

Tucked in with dark wash denim skinnies (below)

I have a feeling I’m just going to keep finding ways to wear it year-round…thrown over a bikini with a sarong, tucked into shorts with a tank top or with colored denim like this look below that I LOVE.

[Camel Jeans:  Fossil]

Here are some of my favorite denim and chambray shirts.

It’s Your Turn:  How healthy is your collection of basic tees and tanks?  What are you planning to update?

Ask Alison | Style My Sequined Tank

Ask Alison | Style My Sequined Tank

I asked…and so did you!

Last week I debuted my new feature, Ask Alison which invites readers to submit an item to be virtually styled on the blog.  It was inspired by an e-mail from a friend who asked for ways to pair up her new fleece vest.  You can see the three looks I created for her HERE.

I also opened the offer to all of you to send in questions and have me pair up pieces that you own.  Thanks to everyone who sent in a request!  I will be featuring them in the coming weeks.  In the meantime, here’s this week’s Ask Alison question.

Hi Alison!  I love your new feature and your blog.  Here’s my question.  I got a new silver sequined tank to wear to my husband’s holiday office party.  I didn’t want to buy a whole outfit because I’d like to make this work with the basics I already own.  Can you show me two different ways to wear it – one casual and one for the party?  I’d like to get more use out of it than just this one event.  Thanks a bunch! – Nicole

Well, Nicole a sequined tank is a great wardrobe builder and more versatile than most think.  You are right on the money for wanting to pair it up in different ways.  I have a few sequined tanks and have worn them for everything from a New Year’s Eve party to a casual dinner.   It’s an excellent multi-tasker.  Not to mention, it works great with basics that most women already own.

Here are two looks to take your sequined tank from holiday party to laid back casual using items you probably already own.

Sequined Tank - Two Ways

For the holiday office party look, I paired the sequined tank with a red swing jacket, black dress pants, strappy heels and sparkly black and silver accessories.  A bright red pedi completes out this elegant holiday look.  If you don’t already own a red jacket, that’s ok, you can substitute any blazer or cardigan with this ensemble.

The laid back casual look features a lightweight boxy sweater to layer over the tank.  Pair it with slouchy boyfriend jeans, comfy leopard print flats, a brown cross-body bag, fun bangles and simple hoop earrings.

It’s Your Turn: Are you having trouble styling an item in your closet? Submit your request to Ask Alison HERE and you could see it styled on the blog!

And if you missed it yesterday…I’m teaming up with three other fabulous bloggers to bring you D.A.S.H. – Deals and Steals Hop!

Easy Spring Outfit Ideas (Including Looks on Sale Right Now)

Easy Spring Outfit Ideas (Including Looks on Sale Right Now)

This post is in partnership with @amazon and contains paid links.

Spring is one of my favorite times to refresh my outfits—everything feels lighter, easier, and more wearable day-to-day. I’ve been focusing on simple combinations that I can mix and match, especially pieces that work across different occasions.

Right now is also a great time to shop because Amazon’s Big Spring Sale is happening, with so many good finds at really great prices. I’ve been finding versatile pieces that make getting dressed feel effortless.

Below are a few outfit ideas I’ve been wearing on repeat lately.

Outfit 1: Casual + Textured Neutrals

This is one of those outfits that feels effortless but still looks like you put thought into it.

The flowy olive pants are such a good alternative to jeans right now—they’re comfortable, a little more elevated, and just feel very “spring.” I paired them with a lightweight cardigan, which I’ve been reaching for constantly this time of year, especially in softer, lighter tones.

I love how the woven tote adds texture (you’ll see a lot of straw and rattan this season), and the simple slide sandals keep everything easy and wearable. It’s the kind of outfit you could throw on for errands or lunch and feel completely put together.

I love mixing textures here—the knit, woven bag, and soft pants all work together to add interest without needing bold colors.

Outfit 2: Classic Spring Staples

You really can’t go wrong with this combination, but a few small details make it feel updated.

White jeans are always a spring staple, but I’ve been gravitating toward slightly more relaxed, straight-leg fits lately—they just feel more current. The blue striped button-down is another piece I keep coming back to. It gives that effortless, slightly oversized look that’s everywhere right now.

Layering a soft cardigan over it makes the outfit feel a little more styled without trying too hard. I also love incorporating softer colors here—especially butter yellow, which is everywhere this spring. I added a woven clutch for texture, and the mules to keep it polished but still casual.

This is the kind of outfit that works for everything—running errands, casual plans, or even a relaxed workday.

Outfit 3: Polished Layers

This outfit leans a little more elevated, but still feels very wearable for everyday.

A trench coat instantly pulls everything together—it’s one of those pieces that makes even a simple outfit feel more intentional. Underneath, the striped knit vest adds a slightly preppy feel, which is a trend I’ve been seeing everywhere this spring.

Keeping everything else neutral, with simple slingback flats and a structured bag, balances it out. This is a great option if you want something that feels a little more put together without being too dressy.

Layering lighter pieces like this is perfect for spring weather when it’s still a little unpredictable.

Outfit 4: Simple Everyday Denim

This is a go-to formula I always come back to.

Straight-leg jeans and a white tank are such an easy base, and adding a lightweight cardigan makes it practical for those in-between spring temperatures. I’ve especially been loving cardigans in softer shades lately—again, butter yellow is such a good option if you want something that feels really current but still easy to wear.

I kept the accessories minimal with neutral sandals and simple gold jewelry, which just helps pull everything together without taking away from how easy the outfit is. This is the kind of look you can wear on repeat and never get tired of.

It’s simple, but the right accessories make it feel complete without overthinking it.

I’ve been leaning into pieces like these lately—things that feel easy, versatile, and still a little elevated for spring. Amazon’s Big Spring Sale is a great time to pick up those kinds of staples, especially if you’re looking for items you can mix and match throughout the season. I’ve linked everything here and in my LTK shop to make it easy to browse, and all links included are paid affiliate links. @amazon #ad #founditonamazon
