The short answer to this question is no, but it’s more complicated than that. Before we get started answering the hair color question, you may be wondering what this season stuff is all about. Well, it is basically the theory that each person’s natural coloring fits into a season, which then determines what other colors will look best on them. When wearing colors that are harmonious with your natural coloring, you will shine and feel more confident. Your best colors can be found by completing a personal color analysis. Once someone knows their season, the question then becomes, “Will my season change if I change my hair color?” Again the answer is no, but it’s not quite that simple.
Your season, and more importantly your sub-season, is made up of so many different elements to include: the value of your coloring (dark or light), your color quality (intense, bright, muted, toasted or shaded), your color temperature (warm, neutral, or cool), and even your personality. Hair color plays a role, but only as one element to assess your overall temperature. It plays a bigger role in how you wear your colors and that’s where it gets complicated.
First off, as long as you had an accurate analysis, your season never changes. You are a Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. What changes when you change your hair, is how you wear your colors and which colors within your season (or sub-season) are best for you. If your hair change is so drastic that the colors in your season no longer work for you, then you might want to consider whether that change was one you should have made. Just saying!
How Changing your Hair, Changes How you Wear Color
First Example: Okay, so let’s say that your change was fairly subtle. Believe it or not, it does still have an effect. I’m a prime example of this. For the past year, I’ve been struggling with what to do with my hair as I’ve become quite gray (like 85%). Should I embrace the gray or cover it up? While pondering this question, I was dying it myself. I chose a color that accurately matched my eyebrows. The problem was that it wasn’t very bright. After a friend of mine told me firmly that I needed to do something with my hair, I went to a hairdresser who brought me back to a bright blonde.
The interesting part is that during this year of hair struggles, I’ve also struggled with my clothing. The reason has to do with color contrast. When my hair became neutral (gray is neutral and so is the blonde color I was dying it), I became less of a color dominated person. This means that I could handle less color. As a formerly color dominant person (blue eyes, yellow hair, and pink skin), I was able to comfortably wear two or three colors at the same time. When my hair changed to neutral, and I put on foundation, I became one color and multiple colors no longer looked good on me. If that sounds a bit confusing, read this poston personal color harmony.
This fairly subtle change resulted in a change in my “best” casual neutral too. Casual neutrals tend to be a lighter neutral – a version of tan or gray. With my self-dyed neutral hair, my best casual neutral was a grayed taupe (right), but my brighter hair change resulted in my best being closer to beige (left). Having a custom fan, I was able to easily change out the swatch. Both swatches are from Spring color palettes, and the change isn’t huge, but it has resulted in which neutral blazer or cardigan works best on me and that does make a difference!
Second Example: Another way that hair color affects how you wear clothes is with value contrast. My beautiful jewel-toned Summer client used to have dark hair and light skin, so she looked amazing when wearing high contrast clothing. Think black and white together. She also could rock an all neutral look. Now that she is fully gray, she no longer has high contrast. She now needs medium colors mixed with dark or light. Her best color scheme is neutral plus a color. It was great to see her light up as she noticed the difference when we were doing her closet. She’d always been a fairly natural beauty and was thinking that she might need to start wearing more makeup. Once she started wearing color (and herspecific colors) she didn’t need makeup, because she literally glowed!
By the way, your value contrast can also change with a tan. So, how you wear your colors in summer versus winter can change as you become more or less contrasted. Blondes tend to increase their contrast while brunettes decrease their contrast. Same as with hair, your season doesn’t change, but how you wear your colors will. Since value and color contrast are such an important part of feeling great in your colors, it is included in my custom color analysis services.
Your Turn! What are some of your struggles when it comes to color and hair?

Today we are diving in to a very exciting version of Style Your Budget. If you’re new around here, Style Your Budget helps you shop smarter by showing you one outfit prompt styled at five drastically different price points.
One of the things that makes Style Challenges work so well is that we don’t provide you the clothes. That may sound like a bad thing at first, but we promise it isn’t. By providing you with a style prompt rather than a box of clothes, you get to decide what the outfit ultimately looks like (and how much it costs).
If you already own all the pieces in the prompt you can shop your closet for a free outfit. Woohoo! However, if you need to fill in a gap in your wardrobe you get to choose which store, and more importantly how much you are going to spend, to fill in that gap.
This look is the Day 5 outfit prompt from the just released Style Challenges Fall 2018 Capsule Wardrobe. Rich fall florals are the perfect transition pattern into cooler temperatures and this outfit is finished out once again with classic closet staples. We say this a lot around GYPO, but truly, investing in good quality closet staples will serve you well season after season. Knowing you have a closet full of solid basics you love makes deciding what to wear fun and affordable!
Denim Jacket + Floral Top + Black Bottoms + Ankle Boots
We always recommend investing in the best quality that your budget allows when it comes to your closet staples. However, if you are trying out new trends, fluctuating between sizes, or need a more budget conscious option we hope this post has helped you see that you truly can feel confident in what you are wearing no matter where you shop or how much you can afford to spend.
It’s Your Turn: What version of the outfit was your favorite?
You’ll have access to this outfit plus six more immediately upon signing up for the Style Challenges Fall 2018 Capsule Wardrobe. Make getting dressed this fall the easiest thing you’ll do all day! Check out how the Style Challenge is changing lives here.
Thank You! Welcome to the Style Challenges community. Thank you for signing up for the Fall 2018 Capsule Wardrobe . I know you are excited to get started and I’m excited for you! Instructions on how to access all of the information you need to build a fashion-forward...
OK, so even though Mother Nature is NOT yet aware, fall is just around the corner, or at least my calendar says so! As usual, I’m getting prematurely hyped up about wearing fall outfits. Living in the south, logic tells me that this really isn’t going to happen for a few more months. But that’s not going to stop me from buying fall clothes, pairing them up and making my hubby take outfit pics in our air conditioned living room! (which btw, I’m still sweating in all of them)
Still, my enthusiasm for fall fashion cannot be contained, thwarted or otherwise poo poo’ed. It is by and far my favorite season of the year to get dressed. I mean who doesn’t love LAYERS?! If you don’t I’m just going to say, we probably can’t be friends.
I mean, have you seen fall 2018’s trends yet? This traditional girl is completely geeking out because they are SO classic! As a matter of fact, I made sure to chock the Fall 2018 GYPO Style Challenge full of classics that you most likely already have in your closet.
Today I’m highlighting a few of my favorite fall trends that are instant classics. How many of these do you already have?
Oh chambray shirt, you should have your own star on the style walk of fame. What else could be so versatile that it can be worn in every season? It’s the ultimate layering piece yet it stands on it’s own. Pair it in the summer over a tank or sundress, in the winter under a sweater or quilted vest or simply tuck it into jeans for spring and fall. This super soft chambray is a recent upgrade that I made to my wardrobe and I can’t recommend it enough!
When gray jeans first hit the scene a few years ago, they were considered a trend but IMO they’ve reached classic status. They match virtually every color and are the first pair I reach for when I’ve grown tired of my basic blue denim.
Love them or hate them, quilted vests (and their lighter weight cousin, utility vests) are making a strong showing for fall 2018. The puffier, heavier versions from a few years back have been pared down to a light weight layer that makes them so much more wearable. If you’ve hated these vests because they added bulk you might want to give them another try!
3. Leopard Flats (and leopard everything)
I just KNEW this day was coming! Leopard is back on the scene in a big way for fall 2018. You have no idea how positively giddy this makes me! Even though retailers weren’t featuring this pattern as much the past few years, I still continued to wear my leopard mules, belt and booties. Now my love is legitimized with it officially being one of fall 2018’s trends.
Loafers, loafers everywhere and lots of pairs to wear! Loafers are the quintessential fall classic and there’s a bumper crop this fall like no other. It’s safe to say they’re back in the spotlight. Whether you opt for the more traditional penny loafer or a mule or slide version, you can’t go wrong.
4. Slip On Sneakers
Athleisure is on the scene for fall 2018. An easy way to dip a toe in this trend is by swapping your regular flats for a pair of fun (and might I add comfy) slip on sneakers. Metallics go with everything!
Cheater, cheater pumpkin eater…denim jackets have been around forever, how can I have the nerve to put them on a fall trends list? Again, classics are all the rage and this is another that’s been thrust back into the mix in a big way. Layer one on over ANYTHING and I do mean anything. They are just that versatile. Not to mention, they’re the perfect fall layer, not too heavy, not too light.
If you don’t have them yet, run, don’t walk (but don’t fall) to get you a pair of taupe ankle booties. There’s a vicious rumor that riding boots are going out of style (btw, NOT TRUE, I’m extremely passionate about this topic in case you didn’t see my Facebook Live). The ONLY kernel of truth in that rumor is that ankle boots are having a moment. If you make one footwear update for fall, make it a pair of taupe ankle boots. Taupe matches both warm and cool colors and you can wear ankle boots with everything from boyfriend and skinny jeans to dresses and skirts.

Fall 2018 GYPO Style Challenge News + Giveaway
Have you heard the news? The Fall 2018 GYPO Style Challenge is almost here! It opens on September 7th which is also my birthday, btw and as a gift to myself (and YOU, of course!) I chocked it full of my favorite fall classics.
What the heck is a Style Challenge you ask? It’s my online personal style program that basically gives you a personal stylist for practically nothing. But seriously, it’s personal style that fits your budget and size and over 24,000 women have joined since it’s start in 2014!
I started this program based on the premise that life’s too short to worry about what you’re wearing. I want getting dressed to be the easiest thing you do all day!
Trust me when I say this, it’s about SO MUCH more than clothes. It’s real women, real fashion and most importantly real FUN!
I’m not just tooting my own horn either, pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea and read through some of the 277 five star reviews.
OK, Alison, this all sounds awesome, but how does it work?
Glad you asked! It’s so easy. First off I give you a shopping list of classic basics and seasonal fall trends. You check off anything you already have in your closet and go shopping for the rest armed with your list. No more decision overwhelm, you’ll know EXACTLY what you need. Don’t worry, I also give you links to online options if you don’t want to leave the house.
The best part? Every piece on your shopping list gets paired up in at least 4-5 different ways helping you make the most of your shopping budget!
After your pieces are in place, you’ll get a daily outfit delivered right to your inbox made up of pieces on the list to style and wear that day.
It’s kind of like meal planning for your closet. I give you the ingredients list (shopping list), you check your pantry (closet) for any staples you already have and then I send you a daily recipe (outfit formula) to create your meals (outfits) for every day of the week!
How much does this cost?
I started the Style Challenge on the premise that EVERY woman deserves to have access to great style and the confidence that comes with it, no matter her size or budget. Access to everything in the program is just $39 per season (considering a personal stylist is $150/hour, I think it’s a pretty awesome deal!) We don’t charge you a recurring membership fee either, you pay for the program you want, that’s it. Plus since you do your own shopping, YOU get to set the budget and shop at your favorite stores.
You can’t put a price on confidence but if we had to, we’d say $39 makes it a pretty good deal! PRICELESS!
I’M TOTALLY IN! Now what?
The Fall 2018 GYPO Style Challenge will be available for registration on September 7th. The minute you sign up, you’ll get your shopping list and access to the first week’s worth of outfits plus all the goodies inside our members only area. Make sure that you’re on our newsletter list so you’ll be the first to know when it opens. In the meantime, you can learn more about Style Challenges and our other programs HERE.

I’ve been participating in the GYPO Style Challenges for three years now and I’ve loved it. I’ve always loved clothes, but I didn’t know how to put outfits together. My closet is now full of mix-and-match outfits, I have learned how to dress myself, and there is no more stress in figuring out to wear. The private FB group is full of wonderful ladies that build each other up. It’s so fun and is seriously the best group on FB.

Get Your Pretty On has changed my life, seriously. I have always chased what is trendy but found from season to season, that things go out of style and I was wasting money on items that I would only end up wearing a few times. GYPO has enabled me to simplify my closet, helps me make smarter purchasing decisions, and I feel so put together and confident using the outfit formulas that are provided. This program is a GAME CHANGER. I've been following GYPO for a few years now and my only regret is not jumping on board sooner.
Michelle Kline November 20, 2019
Great community of ladies, helping each other look stylish, without breaking the bank, and using much of what you already own.
Chosen Faith November 19, 2019
GYPO challenges have been one of the best things I have done! It had taught me so much more than just creating a closet of clothes that I love but also to have confidence in myself, how to pick and choose colors that work for me instead of against, and had given a wonderful community of Pretties who are so special.
