My daughter Ava is a reluctant blog model. She’d much rather be in her work boots mucking out stalls at the horse barn. As a compromise, we agreed to let her model her new FabKids outfit at the stables. Mom wins and so does Ava.
She received this adorable necklace top, leopard pants and headband in this month’s outfit. Visit FabKids.com to learn how to get $20 off your first outfit.

Although I’m a proponent of affordable fashion, today’s post is splurge-worthy because…
EVERY WOMAN NEEDS A GREAT PURSE, PAIR OF BOOTS AND WATCH.
Yes, that’s in all CAPS on purpose. It’s that important.
Let me define the word GREAT. I’m not necessarily saying designer, I’m talking QUALITY (although many times designer = quality). To be more specific, these are timeless, classic, well-made pieces that will make you happy for YEARS to come.
I’m also not encouraging you to spend more than you can afford. Quality is worth saving up for. On a cost per wear basis it is TOTALLY WORTH IT. And surprise! Sometimes it’s even cheaper than a less expensive item that you only wear a few times. Let’s do some math. A $400 purse that you use 365 days a year for two years is only .55 per wear. A $25 shirt that you wear five times for just one season is $5 per wear. Wow!
If you are only going to invest in a few things in your wardrobe, please make them a GREAT PURSE, PAIR OF BOOTS AND WATCH.
Need some options? I’ve got them.
A GREAT PURSE
A classic medium-sized hobo in black works with virtually everything. This well-constructed Marc Jacobs bag will keep you happy for many years.

[Marc by Marc Jacobs: ‘Too Hot to Handle’ Hobo]
Not a hobo girl? Another beautiful option in black is this classic satchel from Rebecca Minkoff.
[Rebecca Minkoff: ‘Darcy’ Leather Satchel]
My personal favorite (and the bag that I own) is this Dooney & Bourke satchel. I did A LOT of research and read tons of reviews before buying this bag. Bag snobs were turning in their Louis Vuittons in exchange for this purse. Everything about it is the utmost quality – the hardware, top grain leather and the gorgeous suede interior. This natural color gets prettier the longer you have it. I get compliments on it just about every time I carry it.
The best part is, it’s the least expensive of the bunch.

[Dooney & Bourke: Florentine Mini Satchel]
A GREAT PAIR OF BOOTS
Since I’m playing favorites, let’s start with the pair that I own. The Frye Melissa Button boot in cognac is such a classic boot that will always be in style. I wear them with everything through the fall and winter.

[Frye: Melissa Button Boot]
Two-toned boots are all the rage this year. Normally I wouldn’t recommend investing in a trend but I think this one is here to stay for awhile. If you can’t decide between black and brown, here’s a great option.

[Frye: Melissa Logo]
A classic flat black riding boot will never go out of style. NEVER. This Coach boot has just the right amount of hardware.

[Coach: ‘Mysie’ Riding Boot]
A GREAT WATCH
OK, so you use your iPhone for a watch. I totally get that and did the same for the past few years. Then I saw a Michael Kors that I couldn’t stop thinking about, so I bought it. I rarely leave the house without it on my wrist now. Your iPhone will still be there, it just isn’t nearly as fashionable.
[Michael Kors: Chain Bracelet Chronograph]
Here’s a watch similar to the one I own, mine is gold with tortoise shell. The chain bracelet is really pretty and classic and you can wear mixed metals with anything.

[Michael Kors: Chain Bracelet Chronograph]
A few years ago, over-sized gold watches came onto the scene in a big way. I wasn’t sure if the trend would last so I bought a cheap one for $20, which, of course, stopped working. Now I know that over-sized gold watches are here to stay so investing in a high quality one is a must have.

[Michael Kors: Large Runway Gold Watch]
A large face and leather band will always be in style. This Marc by Marc Jacobs watch is the least expensive of the bunch but still high on quality and style.

[Marc by Marc Jacobs: ‘Baker’ Watch]
Let me throw in one more item.
EVERY WOMAN NEEDS A GREAT PAIR OF SUNGLASSES.
I just invested in two pairs of classic Ray-Ban’s – a Wayfarer and an Aviator. They are so well-made and with proper care will last for years.

It’s hard to believe we are only a little over a month into fall. I’ve already had so much fun with fall fashion! Here are five of my favorite looks so far, along with my pick for the star of the show of each outfit. These are the pieces I keep going back to over and over again to build my fall looks.
1. Embellished Sweatshirt + Blush Jeans

Favorite Piece: Blush Jeans

[Loft: Moto Zip Ankle Jean]
Are you tired of hearing about these jeans yet? I hope not because I still have ways planned to wear them. You can see how I styled them with a floral blouse here, a striped tee here and five ways I planned to wear them here. P.S. They’re ON SALE!
2. Gray Sweater + Coated Denim

Favorite piece: Coated Denim

[Vince Camuto: Coated Skinny Jean]
Coated denim is a trend I’ve been itching to try since last fall. I love the pretty plum color of this Vince Camuto pair and they’re 40% off!
3. Pastel Jeans + Navy Blazer
Favorite Piece: Pastel Jeans

[Kut from the Kloth: Mia Stretch Corduroy]
Pastels are big for fall, I mean BIG. Pastel pants in mint, baby blue, yellow, lavender and rose look fresh paired up with a neutral sweater and your favorite pair of boots or booties. If you don’t have a pair yet, it’s not too late. Try out some corduroys.
4. Olive Blouse + Leggings
Favorite Piece: Spanx Leggings

[Spanx: Look at Me Legging]
This is one of my most pinned looks lately. I’m loving my new Spanx leggings and have been pairing them up continuously this fall. I may need to buy a second pair to keep in rotation!
5. White Jeans + Cardigan
Favorite Piece: Frye Riding Boots

[Frye: Melissa Boot in Cognac]
My Frye riding boots will be in heavy rotation again this fall and winter. The cognac color goes with everything. I cannot express my love for these boots enough! Yes, they’re an investment but TOTALLY worth it.
It’s Your Turn: What pieces do you keep going back to over and over again for fall? Tell me in the comments!

Have you ever had to go to back to back events – one casual, the other dressier – with NO time to change in between?
Last week, I had to rush between two overlapping blogger events – a preview of the new Nordstrom Rack in Dallas and a press screening for the Universal Pictures’ film “About Time“. More to come on both soon.
For the Nordstrom Rack event, I wanted to be stylish yet comfortable. One of my blogging assignments was to put together three outfits while I was there – so quick changes in the fitting room were a must.
I started with two comfortable basics – my faux leather leggings and an over-sized cobalt blue sweater – then paired them simply with my leopard flats.

[Leggings: Similar/Sweater: Mossimo/Flats: Similar/Necklace: Stella & Dot c/o Lori McMinn]
In the car on the way to the press screening, I swapped out my flats for some ankle boots and added a leopard scarf. Instantly dressier.

[Leggings: Similar/Sweater: Mossimo/Booties: c/o Wallis/Scarf: Boutique Find (Similar)/Necklace: Stella & Dot c/o Lori McMinn]
Lesson learned – there’s no need to do a full outfit change when going between events. Start with a good base then swap out a few accessories in the car and you’re good to go!
