The Next Thing You Need | Leggings Looks

A year ago, my second most popular and most pinned post to date went live –  A Week of Leggings Outfits.  It’s second only behind my Elf on the Shelf Ideas.

So what does that tell me?

You love leggings and elves!

I’ll spare you the elf ideas today (although our scout elf is making lots of mischief around here again this year).  But I am going to bring you some more leggings looks.

First, let’s start with the base – a GREAT pair of leggings.  As we all know, not all leggings are created equally.  It’s hard to find the right combo of coverage, stretch and comfort.

I’ve been touting my favorite pair for well over a year, the SPANX ‘Look at Me’ shaping leggings.

These are the queen mother of all leggings – just the right amount of coverage and suck-in-ability, without being too constrictive.   My only complaint?  They’re a little bit pricey.

But I’m SO excited because I just discovered a pair for $20 less with a double layer waist band AND they come in FIVE different colors.  Best part – they’re at Kohl’s so you can use your coupons!

I present to you the Assets ‘Red Hot Label’ by Spanx shaping leggings.

They come in black, brown, deep maroon, gray and indigo.  The toughest part is going to be deciding which colors to add to your collection.

Which are your favorites?

Assets leggings I already have black so I’m thinking I’ll go with gray and brown next, then add indigo and deep maroon later.

Yesterday I made an accidental (unpleasant) discovery.  When the temps are freezing, leggings are NOT warm!  So I ran out to Target and bought these – Warm Essentials Fleece Lined Leggings.

They feel like a warm hug for legs and are very inexpensive!  They added a much-needed layer of warmth between the biting wind and my legs.

Now for some outfit ideas for pairing them up.

Outfit #1 – Dressy

Dressed up leggings?  Yes!  Just add a leather trimmed sweater and some cute ankle boots.

And what a deal I’ve found for you!

This hi-lo sweater with faux leather trim is on clearance with an additional 20% off at Lord & TaylorThat makes it just $16.70!  It comes in black or teal.  All sizes are in stock now so hurry if you want one!

Pair it up with gray leggings for some contrast with the black boots.

 Outfit #2 – Cozy

Leggings are the base for any cozy outfit creation.  Add a cable knit sweater and some comfy boots and you’re set for a day of lounging in style.  This pretty cable knit tunic with speckled threading comes in oatmeal or gray and it’s under $25.

All this look needs is a cup of hot cocoa.

Outfit #3 – Go-To

This go-to outfit for any occasion features a lace hem sweater that comes in gray or black.  The black would go great with deep maroon leggings.

These Coach riding boots are making me drool.  They’re really close to getting added to the Christmas list!

  • I’ve been meaning to try the spanx legging and love this outfits with leggings, they all look so cozy.

  • I love the sweater tunic with brown leggings. I tried to order it today and it is sold out in my size:( I will keep searching. Thanks for the great ideas! Susan

  • Love how you showed the different combos. I like all three!!! Leggings are such a great option and I love that they are comfy. 🙂

  • I’ve been on a major leggings kick lately! I really like the maroon ones. I might need to pick those up!

  • I like the Nine West leggings at DSW – they have that control top but are still comfy. I also like my sweater leggings that are fair isle-ish, very comfy! And H&M makes a great cable knit legging that are surprisingly well-made for the price (I think I paid $10). I have a hard time finding shirts that will cover the tush because I am so tall.

  • Hi Girl!!! Merry Christmas!!! Since you asked… I love to pair leggings with a long jacket. Cinch in the waist with a belt and add some boots; it’s my winter go to outfit for work! (When I’m in leggings I feel compelled to cover my booty and front… so no high low for me.) xoxo jules

  • I had no idea that Spanx had leggings?! That is fantastic!

  • Love this post. Leggings are my favorite item and I wear them every which way. Plus, in Winter I use them for warmth underneath pants. Especially helpful on a windy motorcycle.

  • I’m a firm believer that if you wear leggings, you must cover your butt, so I wear them with sweater dresses, or very long tunics. I love leggings! Thanks for this post!

  • Sigh, you put up such great styling tips for leggings, but everytime I tell myself I can come over the “naked feeling of not wearing anything” when i pair my leggings, I give up and wear a dress or a tunic or a skirt on top of it.. :(. I am sad.

  • I have some fleece lined leggings and LOVE them, but a thinner pair is nice for warmer weather or wearing them under things. The Spanx pair sound great! Great outfits you created, too!

  • I love those – and even more, love that they’re Spanx! Just that extra bit of shaping self-confidence! Before I go shopping for them, though, I’m going to have to do something about the Thanksgiving gluttony that happened last week or my current Spanx are going to go on strike! 😀

Oh, and those Coach boots? I look at them and have to look away and repeat my mantra of “I live in a tropical climate, I do not need to buy boots” over and over again to stop the urge!

  • I love leggings- genius fashion idea. I’ve bought a few pairs of sweater leggings + fleece leggings this year and now LIVE in them on the weekends. So cozy!

    Happy Friday, doll!

  • Thank you for this post!! I love leggings but have struggled to find good tops to wear with them. Also, many of mine are thinner than I would like. Awesome ideas/tips!

  • I have some maroon leggings and wear them all of the time! I was surprised I wear them as much as I do, but found they go with about as much as my black ones do. Love the fleece lined too! Thanks!

Love leggings but you’re right about them not providing insulation. I’m wearing them now and it’s pretty cold in the Bay Area and my legs are freezing (the heat is broken in my office so it’s just as cold inside as it is outside!). There is a Target near my daughter’s daycare. May have to pick up a pair of these fleece leggings!

  • Courtney Mac

Thanks to Miz Sheaffer, I already have the HUE leggings, but I love me some sales at Kohls and want a pair of the brown Spanx. Thanks for sharing!!

  • I have been wanting to try the Assets line from Spanx for awhile now because they are more affordable! Now that I see all those beautiful colors they are going on my shopping list for sure! 🙂

    xo Always, Abby

  • I need to check out the spanx leggings, maybe they will make me look awesome

  • Great legging outfits & ideas! I love those Jessica Simpson shoots too! Ax
