Ask Alison | Five Best Products for Styling Curly Hair

This month’s Ask Alison is all about curly hair.  In my world, August is curly hair month.  After a summer of sun and chlorine, my hair can start to look pretty fried.  It’s not very enticing to spend 40 minutes blow drying and flat ironing (a.k.a. “taming the beast”), just to have it frizz in the humidity.  No thanks!  So today I’m sharing my favorite products and styling tips for managing curly hair.
Curly Hair

Alison, like you, I have naturally curly hair that I wear straight most of the time.  But in the summer months, I don’t want to mess with it so I let it go curly.  What are some of your favorite tips and tricks for styling your hair curly? – Anna P.

Hey Anna!  I’m glad you asked this question. In late summer, I try to cut back to blow drying just once a week and style my hair curly the rest of the time.  It’s so much easier, I just apply my favorite curly hair products and let it air dry.  Here’s my exact curly hair styling routine.

1.  ShampooOuidad Curl Quencher Moisturizing Shampoo

Normally I use a frizz control or smoothing shampoo but when I wear my hair curly, Ouidad offers the gold standard in curly hair products.  Their Curl Quencher Moisturizing Shampoo really does hydrate well and helps my curls hold their form better than my regular shampoo.  I don’t mind spending a little more for it because I don’t use it as often.

2. Hair MaskWEN Sweet Almond Mint Re Moist Intensive Hair Treatment

An intensive hair mask is a MUST if you have curly hair.  When Shay did this awesome hair mask post, I immediately ordered her top pick, WEN Sweet Almond Mint Re Moist Intensive Hair Treatment.  When I say that it’s transformative, I mean it.  My curls looks healthy, shiny and bouncy after using this.  Just be careful to use it on the lower part of our hair only, it can get a little greasy if you apply it near your scalp.

3.  Styling ProductGarnier Fructis Style Curl Sculpting Cream

This has been my go-to curly hair styling product for years.  It gives my curls great definition and frizz control without being crunchy.  I just scrunch it into my curls while my hair is still wet.

4.  Air Dry

My secret to great curls is letting my hair air dry and keeping my fingers off.  After I apply my styling product, I don’t touch my hair until it’s completely dry.  Touching it just makes it frizzy and separates the curls.

5.  Shine and Smooth – Macademia Natural Oil Healing Oil Treatment

After my hair is completely dry, I rub a dime-sized amount of Macademia Natural Oil between my palms and apply it to the ends.  I then use what’s left on my hands to smooth any frizz around my face.

That’s it.  A simple routine for healthy, bouncy curls that takes about five minutes to do.  Makes me wonder why I don’t wear my hair curly more often!

  • Girl! Isn’t that hair mask awesome?!?! I’m totally in love too! And listen, your curly hair is GORGEOUS! Goodness! You have the very best head of hair friend! XO

  • Oh how I have always wanted curly hair! Lucky girl(: Susan

  • I need to buy all these products! My hair takes a backseat during the school year!

    • Adding a few key products to your routine will breathe new life into your hair, Sarah! You’ll love that you took the time to do it.

  • Kathy

Do you use the Ouidad conditioner? Or, any kind of conditioner after shampooing?

Thanks….can’t wait to try some of these.

    • Hi Kathy! I usually only wash my hair twice a week and use the mask both times. But when I do use conditioner, lately it’s been Dove Moisturizing. It gives it moisture without weighing it down.

  • I WISH I could wear my hair this way, but here’s the problem….it’s super wavy in the back and straight as a board on the sides. NOT a good look!!!!! :O
Oh well, it’s a blow dryer and hot rollers for me all summer long!

  • I straighten my curly hair a lot, too. I love the Garnier Fructis line for curls when I wear it curly though!

  • Becky

Great tips! So glad you shared – my hair tends to be more wavy than anything else!

My hair is flat, fine and straight! Your curls are gorgeous! Lucky girl you can wear your hair both ways and look great!

  • Perfect timing. I am SO frustrated with my hair that its not even funny. Naturally my hair is very curly, but not consistantly curly. I gave up on straightening it, because no matter what I did, the straightness would only seem to last an hour, at best. My hair in a bun everyday at work? Guess so…

I will have to give some of these products a try and see what happens.

I use Aveda be curly curl enhancer, ic’s styling foam and Aveda’s witch hazel spray to lock the curls in place with out getting my hair crunchy. I always let it dry naturally, During the summer because of the humidity I do spray ant-frizz spray.

  • Great tips! I also have naturally curly hair – I try to leave it alone in the summer. I keep hearing about Wen products – I’ll have to try some!

  • Thanks for the tips! I have wavy hair, but I always have problems getting them to curl without going frizzy. I’m always on the lookout to try new products and I’ll definitely have to check some of these out!

  • I am a huge fan of going with my curls in the summer, it just helps to not have to suffer under the heat of a hair dryer. I want to try the Garnier Sculpting Cream, I’m on the lookout for something better. I hate that crunchy feeling!

  • It looks like we have similar curls. I also wear my hair curly in the summer because of the heat.

  • Christy

I use all Deva Curl products. I know that Ouidad and …and lots of other curly hair products contain silicone and sulfates, which are not good for curly hair.

  • Emily Richelson Chwastiak
    • Thanks Emily! That’s awesome!

  • I love the Garnier curl products! I use them when I curl my hair and on my daughter’s perfect little ringlets. It’s the best. xo ~ Megan

    • Yes, they are great Megan!

  • Nancy

I have the same hair texture as you. I have been using Curl Keeper Original as a style product. I love it. It gives me perfect curls every time. I also love that it is water based and you can re-activate it on day two by wetting your hands and scrunching up your hair. It is sold on http://www.frizzoff.com/5-curl-keeper.aspx and also on Amazon if anyone is interested in trying it.

  • Have you tried the Deva Curl line? It’s my go to once the humidity goes up!
