Today’s Ask Alison video addresses a question I get asked by readers on a regular basis – what wardrobe pieces are worth the investment.
Alison – I’ve heard you say to invest in classic pieces for your wardrobe that stand the test of time. What pieces do you recommend investing in and how much should I spend on them?
In the following video, I share three wardrobe items that are always worth the investment plus some advice on budgeting for your own investment item bucket list.
Three Wardrobe Pieces Worth the Investment
What NOT to Invest In
There are also some items that you should steer clear of spending much on. For example,
- Trends – Trendy items are usually only in style for one season. If it feels overly trendy, then it probably is. If you’re unsure, buy an inexpensive version and if it proves to have longevity you can always upgrade it at a later date.
- Jewelry – Unless it’s the real deal, don’t invest much into costume jewelry.
- Tees and Tanks – These are all basically made from the same materials and something you’ll want to replace on a regular basis, especially if you regularly wear them as an under layer.
It’s Your Turn: I want to know what’s on your investment bucket list. Tell me three items that you’d love to own (or already have) in the comments below.

Today kicks off a new monthly blog series called “What I’m Really Wearing”. In the fashion blog world, I’ve found that a lot of the outfits are more aspirational than inspirational. I’ve even fallen into the trap of featuring overly styled and accessorized outfits that I wouldn’t wear in real life. Truth is, I do wear a version of these outfits, just pared down significantly.
That’s what this series is all about – the simplified outfits I’m REALLY wearing to do real life in and you can too.
This month, I’m featuring my winter white cords because they’ve been the one item I’ve reached for in my closet more than any other this winter.
Growing up in the northeast, my winter wardrobe consisted of 50 shades of gray…and black. Color was almost non-existent. If you had told me then that winter white and pastels would one day be my winter staples, I never would’ve believed it. Yet here I am, loving (and living in) my pale pink sweater and winter white pants.

The Pretty Fix is a monthly feature at Get Your Pretty On that features my top five picks for the month that you can shop for on your own to stay in style…all at a price you’ll love. The idea for it was born out of frustration that some of you have had with other monthly box services that you feel “miss the mark” or are too pricey.
Each month, the Pretty Fix includes five affordable items that I personally recommend to stay on trend. This month features pieces to help you reach your goals for a healthy 2016.
Want to know the best part? You can buy everything in the monthly fix for around $100.
Consider me your budget-minded personal shopper. Here’s your January Pretty Fix.

JANUARY PRETTY FIX TOTAL = $126.23
I know you’ve heard me gush over Fabletics many times before but I LOVE this brand. The quality is better than Lululemon and the pieces are every bit as cute. The best part? When you sign up, you get a full outfit starting at just $25. If the idea of a monthly membership scares you, you can skip months as often as you want (that’s what I do).
One of my goals is to stay better hydrated and drink more water this year. If downing plain water isn’t your thing, this bottle with a built in infuser makes it easy to make flavored water. Some of my favorite combos are cucumber with mint, watermelon with fresh rosemary and strawberries with lemon.
Getting adequate sleep is one of the healthiest things you can do for your body. If the sandman eludes you, try spritzing your pillow with this relaxing lavender spray before turning in for the night.
These Nike Flex Supreme Cross Trainers have been my most comfortable pair of athletic shoes that I’ve owned. They have just the right amount of cushion and support. Black and white goes with all of your athletic outfits.
My gift to kick off your 2016 right is a free copy of my eBook “Get Pretty, Kick Butt – The Moms’ Guide to Looking Your Best and Getting More Done”. It’s a super quick read full of ideas for scheduling your day, making yourself a priority and getting more done. It’s yours to download on Kindle for a limited time for free.

It’s the time of the year that I pause to reflect back on what the past year has meant to me. I’m simply in awe of the amazing amount of blessings that it’s held.
You girls are a HUGE part of what I have to be thankful for. I honestly have the BEST job in the world. The community that’s arisen out of GYPO and the GYPO Style Challenge is beyond anything I could’ve ever dreamed.
Blogging Break
During the next two weeks, I’ll be taking a break from posting on the blog. I could’ve done prescheduled content but decided not to and here’s why:
- I need a true break and digital detox. It’s been my busiest year yet and my mind and body need time to digest it and unwind.
- I don’t want to contribute to the “noise” that can distract from what matters most at this time of the year.
But the biggest reason of all is this:
I’m committing to less screen time during the next two weeks and I’d love to have you join me.
Let’s step away from our computers and put down our smart phones to truly connect and be present during this time of the year so we can focus on what really matters – God and family.
I’ll see you back here the first week of January with the first Pretty Fix of the new year. I also have loads of new content planned to make 2016 your happiest, most stylish year yet.
Have a VERY blessed Christmas and all the best in 2016!
xoxo
