Dressing for the summer weather can sometimes feel limiting. It’s hot and the last thing you want to add is extra heat. In the fall and winter it’s so easy to add tons of interest to any outfit with layers, scarves, or a cute jacket but in the summer what’s a girl to do? That’s why this month’s Style Your Budget is dedicated to the small details that pack a big punch. It’s in these small details that we’re able to add interest without adding heat. After all, staying cool is essential in the summer but you don’t have to sacrifice style.
For this SYB look, I started off with one of my favorite summer staples, jean shorts. They are versatile, come in a variety of styles and lengths plus there’s the option to sub in a denim skirt or if it’s not completely hot where you are, jean crops. Next, I’m still styling a solid top, but this time I’m opting for something with a little more detail. Perhaps one with a few ruffles, embroidery details, or maybe a scalloped hem. There are so many fun top options out there you’re sure to find one with details you like. Finally, I’m going to finish it off with one of the summer trends I’ve been seeing everywhere, woven/quilted sandals. The details may be small but they make a big statement.
Below is the outfit formula I’m using for this look, which gives you the ability to choose pieces that fit your climate and lifestyle. Don’t forget to shop your closet first but if you have any gaps you want to fill, I’ve provided five different shopping options and at different price points. This allows you the freedom to shop where you want because I believe feeling great and looking great should be for everyone, every age, every size, and every budget!
You asked for it! These are a few of my favorite things…from seasonal trends to teeth whitening. Here are ALL of the deets on what I’m wearing, packing, and using!
I’m back with an all-new Five Ways to Wear It and this time I’m showing you how to style a denim jacket. You may be saying to yourself, ‘Alison, isn’t a denim jacket more of a spring thing?’ Yes, but it’s also a great thing to have in summer and let me tell you why. First, for our Pretties in a chillier climate, the weather is fickle and you never know when you’re going to have cooler weather especially in the mornings and possibly the evenings making this the perfect layering piece. Second, for our Pretties living in super hot climates, while it may be hot outside, inside the A/C is cranking making it necessary to carry a layering piece so you don’t freeze in your summer attire. I always have a layering piece with me when we go out and the denim jacket is one of my favorites.
Below are five easy ways to style your denim jacket using Outfit Formulas® meaning you can adapt them even further to fit your lifestyle and climate. This is a timeless piece making it an essential closet staple. If you don’t have one yet I highly recommend one as you will get countless uses out of it. I suggest starting out with a medium wash as it will have the most versatility but ultimately, pick whatever wash suits you best. Now let’s check out five ways to style a denim jacket!
Option #1
Denim Jacket + White Tee + Khaki Bottoms + White Sneakers
For my first look, I started with my take on a monochromatic outfit with a white top and light khaki bottoms. I finished off this casual look with my white sneakers. This look is the perfect base for my denim jacket. These shorts from Old Navy are ridiculously comfortable I’ve already gotten several wears out of them this summer and my sneakers make this the ultimate outfit for running some errands.
Option #2
Denim Jacket + Solid Top + White Bottoms + Colorful Shoes
Outfit number two is a bit dressier. I paired a solid tee with one of my favorite summer pieces, a white eyelet skirt. Colorful flip coordinate with my top and then, of course, I topped it off with my denim jacket. I love the way the denim plays off the white skirt and by cuffing the sleeves of the jacket, I easily add some extra detail and interest. The colorful flip flops I’m wearing are from J.Crew Factory and were so popular they are now sold out however I did find another fun, colorful pair from Target.
Option #3
Denim Jacket + White Top + Bright Bottoms + Colorful Shoes
Look number three I’m back to my solid white tee but this time I’m stepping away from my monochromatic look and opting for some bright green shorts and colorful flip-flops. I love the scalloped detail of these green shorts! If green shorts aren’t for you, no problem! By using the formula, any bright color shorts will work then finish off with your denim jacket.
Option #4
Denim Jacket + Printed Dress + Neutral Shoes
Outfit number four, back to the dressier side. At first, I wasn’t sure how I was going to like this sundress but once I tried it on it was a heck yes! I paired it with some neutral shoes but this outfit would also look great with a bright color shoe that coordinates with one of the colors in the dress. I added a hat to help keep the sun off my face and of course topped with my denim jacket.
Option #5
Denim Jacket + White Top + Printed Bottoms + Neutral Shoes
My last look combines color and comfort! I paired my solid pink tee with my printed striped shorts and added in my neutral, raffia slides from J.Crew Factory. Raffia accessories are really on-trend this summer and I’ve already worn these slides so many times. Unfortunately, there are only limited sizes left, however, these raffia slides from Target are equally as cute! My denim jacket is the perfect topper for this colorful ensemble. Now I’m ready to go enjoy some lunch with my girls!
Still looking for the perfect denim jacket? Here are a few different options.

It may sound horrible to say, but I don’t like grocery shopping. I never feel adequately prepared, I end up forgetting items I need, and I always feel rushed. I feel this way because I always feel like there’s something else I should be doing instead. Does anyone else feel this way? Mom guilt, yeah it’s a real thing. Life is so busy between work and three kids and their different activities and I’m in constant conflict with the things I should be doing, the things I need to do, and the things I want to do. That’s why I LOVE Walmart’s Online Pickup & Delivery service. It helps turn one of the things I have to do into one of the things I don’t mind doing. It’s grocery shopping made easy! There are so many reasons to love this service, but here are my top five!
1. More time to think and plan
I personally like to select my pickup time and submit my orders at night when the house is quiet and the kids are in bed. It gives me time to plan out a few meals and take inventory of what we actually need and not just guess. I can shop on walmart.com/grocery from my computer or use the Walmart mobile app and they keep track of the things I’ve ordered in the past so I’m not searching for each item. Plus, I can scan the barcode on items as I run out and keep a running list. The best part is, even after I submit my order I can still add items until I’ve reached my cutoff time which can vary depending on what time I pick for pickup or delivery. It’s so convenient and easy to pick the time that works best for my schedule.
2. I’m not limited to just groceries
Did you know that Walmart’s Online Pickup & Delivery service isn’t just for groceries? I can also add general merchandise to my orders too. Last week my husband was out of town. I didn’t have my teammate to stay with the kids while I did the running around. Before that scenario may have left me a little overwhelmed but not now. In addition to my regular grocery order, I was able to add the birthday present I needed for a party on Saturday as well as a fun activity to do with the kids on Sunday. It was a nice surprise to see that I could even get a birthday card, score! Plus I may have thrown in a little treat for myself – Essie nail polish in Cute As A Button.
Once my order was ready I received a notification (which means no time wasted), I checked in upon leaving my house so they knew I was one the way. Now instead of dragging my kids through the store, all I had to do was load them in the car, shoes optional, and pull into one of their marked pickup spaces. A Walmart associate then carefully loaded my groceries into the trunk and we were on our way back home. Simple, painless, and best of all, we didn’t even have to leave the car.
3. I’m never stuck with unwanted products
When placing my order through Walmart’s Online Pickup & Delivery serviceI can allow for substitutions. The personal shoppers will substitute for an equal or better item at no additional cost. I also have the option to choose the specific substitutions I want or opt for none at all. I usually get a notification before picking up my order to let me know what, if any, items were substituted. If it’s not what I want, I can just decline it from my order without ever being charged. Plus they have a 100% freshness guaranteed meaning the items, even the produce will be just like I picked it myself. If you’re not happy with your order you can contact customer care for a refund. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used Walmart’s Online Pickup & Delivery and I’ve only had to do this once but it was super quick and really easy.
4. Pick up is free
Sounds too good to be true right? There’s got to be a catch. That’s what I first thought which is why it took me so long to try Walmart’s Online Pickup & Delivery service. I was so wrong. The prices are the same as if I was buying the items in-store and there is no additional cost to use their order pickup service. There is a $35 minimum but with a family of five, that’s not been a problem for me then all I have to do is take them from my trunk to the house. If I’m super busy I can opt to have the groceries delivered to my door for a small fee which is also ideal if I have a sick kiddo. I can also choose their 2-hour or less delivery service if I need things right away.* This truly is grocery shopping made easy!
5. more time for what’s important
It’s summertime and I couldn’t be happier! I love having my kids home and squeezing in fun anywhere we can. What’s not fun though is trying to grocery shop with them. It’s not that they’re bad, I’m lucky to have three amazing kids, but let’s face it, none of us want to spend our already limited downtime grocery shopping. By using Walmart’s Online Pickup & Delivery service I’m able to be more efficient when it comes to planning and grocery shopping. Now I’m able to spend more undistracted time with my family which is what truly makes me truly happy. After all, my kids aren’t going to be this little forever.
Thank you Walmart for helping me save time and my sanity and for supporting small businesses like GYPO!
*$35 minimum and small delivery fee apply. Pickup and Delivery available in select markets.
I’m still not sure what we’re doing this year to celebrate the Fourth of July, but with all the amazing clothing options available at Walmart I know I’ll be ready for anything! They have so many comfortable and versatile pieces it was hard to put together just one look, so I ended up putting together five 4th of July outfits! From fun prints that go with everything to easy one-and-done pieces, there’s a little something for everyone. The best part, all these looks aren’t just for the fourth but will become a favorite go-to look all summer long. While I love, their Time and Tru brand, their Scoop brand just dropped some amazing summer pieces you’ll totally want to ‘scoop’ up.
OUTFIT #1
Patterned Romper or Dress + Metallic Shoes + Neutral Handbag
This striped romper from Time and Tru is perfect for those hot July days! It’s a great one-and-done piece and of course, it has my all-time favorite pattern – stripes! I kept it simple by adding these great metallic flip-flops and my pop of color came from these red raffia earrings. They are great for adding interest without adding heat plus it gives me a reason to wear my hair up and off my neck. Got to show off those great earrings right? I finished this look off with a neutral handbag, which also has a crossbody strap, that will not only look great with my summer outfits, but I can easily transition into my fall wardrobe.
OUTFIT #2
Patterned Top + White Bottoms + Metallic Shoes + Neutral Handbag
I’d be lying if I said this red plaid top wasn’t the first thing that caught my eye. It’s really lightweight without being see-through and I love how it comes down a little in the back but has the tie detail in the front. Although I paired it with some white bottoms, it would also go great with any denim wash. Keeping with the hands-free theme I added a straw crossbody and finished off with some gold chain link earrings. Can we say Walmart Fashion for the win?!?
OUTFIT #3
Solid Dress + Neutral Shoes + Bright Handbag
I’m a sucker for a one-and-done piece and this solid navy dress fits the bill perfectly! It’s so comfortable and the ruffle details are a great touch. I paired them with some classic navy wedges which are ideal for a backyard picnic. They are able to give me a little extra height but I won’t have to worry about sinking into the grass. Since I’ll want to keep my hands free I opted for a red crossbody and some silver hoop earrings to finish off this Fourth of July Outfit.
OUTFIT #4
Printed Dress + Metallic Shoes + Neutral handbag
Although a dress can sometimes feel too fancy, this floral patterned dress is light and airy and it’s kept completely casual with the addition of the metallic flip-flops and raffia strapped crossbody. If you do want to go fancy, simply add some nude heels or wedges and opt for a simple clutch.
OUTFIT #5
White Top + Medium Wash Denim + White Shoes + Bright Handbag
I wanted to feature Fourth of July Outfits that are both easy and casual and what could be easier than a white tank top with some medium wash denim shorts? Remember though, you can start with a simple formula like this one but it’s the small details that can add tons of extra interest. For example, this white knit tank top by Scoop has a tiny hole pattern and scalloped hem that complements the silver studs on the white sandals. Then throw in a bright handbag for a pop of color and you’re all set! I choose red to keep with my patriotic theme but any color will work with this outfit.
Your turn! What Fourth of July Outfit is your favorite?
A big thank you to Walmart for keeping us stylish this summer and for supporting small businesses like GYPO!

I am so glad I was part of the Fall 2019 Style Challenge. It gave me confidence and so many great outfitt ideas. The ladies in the group were very supportive and I will defintetly be doing another challenge in the future.

I’ve been participating in the GYPO Style Challenges for three years now and I’ve loved it. I’ve always loved clothes, but I didn’t know how to put outfits together. My closet is now full of mix-and-match outfits, I have learned how to dress myself, and there is no more stress in figuring out to wear. The private FB group is full of wonderful ladies that build each other up. It’s so fun and is seriously the best group on FB.

Get Your Pretty On has changed my life, seriously. I have always chased what is trendy but found from season to season, that things go out of style and I was wasting money on items that I would only end up wearing a few times. GYPO has enabled me to simplify my closet, helps me make smarter purchasing decisions, and I feel so put together and confident using the outfit formulas that are provided. This program is a GAME CHANGER. I've been following GYPO for a few years now and my only regret is not jumping on board sooner.
Michelle Kline November 20, 2019
Great community of ladies, helping each other look stylish, without breaking the bank, and using much of what you already own.
Chosen Faith November 19, 2019
GYPO challenges have been one of the best things I have done! It had taught me so much more than just creating a closet of clothes that I love but also to have confidence in myself, how to pick and choose colors that work for me instead of against, and had given a wonderful community of Pretties who are so special.
