Hi Pretties! Today I wanted to dive deeper into a topic that I know I’ve talked about before, but it’s something that I feel is so important. It’s about being in a rut. We’ve all been there and that’s okay, but it’s important to remember that we can’t stay in the rut. That’s how Get Your Pretty On came about, it was my accountability to get out of a yoga pants rut, to pull myself together and find my motivation again. For more details click on the coffee chat below.
Yes, it all started with what I call my yoga pants rut. I didn’t want to get dressed, I didn’t want to take care of myself and I really wasn’t feeling good about myself. It became a downward spiral and I lost all motivation. I had to make an intentional effort to pull myself out of this rut and make myself a priority again. Now I’d love to say, “oh, I’d never get stuck in a rut anymore,” or “I don’t spend all day in yoga pants yoga pants anymore.” I do. It happens. It happens to everybody and that’s fine. I think that we need to allow ourselves some grace and do that and be okay with it. But I think it’s now equally important for me to realize I’m going down that path before it gets too bad again.
Recognize the Warning Signs
It’s important for us to watch for the warning signs whenever that rut starts. If it becomes more days than not that you’re in the yoga pants or more days than not, that you’re just not taking care of yourself and you start to see these red warning flags go up around you in your life. Maybe your house is a little bit messy or maybe you’re eating junk food or the laundry is piling up or you’re not making the bed anymore. Maybe you’re drinking too much coffee or you’re not exercising. Whatever the red flags may be, be sure to pay attention to them. They usually start out small and innocent enough, but then before we know it they can spiral out of control.
Make Small Changes
Now that you’re recognizing the warning signs what are you going to do about It? This is where you have to be intentional and make the decision to break the cycle. Force yourself to take a shower and get ready. Make that decision that you’re going to work out for 30 minutes or take 15 minutes and clean off the kitchen counter. Whatever it is that will help you move in a positive direction. That’s why keeping a journal can help. Writing things down can help you recognize patterns and give you the forethought to break the rut cycle. So watch for the warning sign and then do one small thing to start feeling better.
Do Good Feel Good
Now it’s time to make a go-to list of things that are going to fuel your energy and recharge your battery. These things make you feel like the best version of yourself. I like to call this my Do Good, Feel Good list. You guys have heard me talk about this before. As caretakers and providers and spouses and parents, we tend to focus on everybody around us constantly. It’s just a fact of life. We do it. So we need to make a conscious choice to refill our personal tanks and here’s some ways that we can do that through self-care.
Drinking lots of water, eating lots of whole foods, working out, journaling, getting a massage, getting enough rest, going to bed early, avoiding negativity, conflict, planting flowers, working in the garden, reading a book, listening to music. There are so many things that you can do to foster that self-care in your relationships. Make a phone call, talk to your parents, call your sisters, call somebody, plan a date night, plan a surprise for someone you love. Write a thank you note. Spirituality: go to church, pray, write in your daily devotionals or read them.
Spend some time thinking about some things that can make you feel better. Because I find that when I have that list to rely on, I have these go-to resources that I don’t have to think about. Because the thing is, when we get in those mental states and we get stuck there, we don’t necessarily have the bandwidth or the resources to go out and start looking for things to make ourselves feel better. So what brings you mental peace? Make a list of those things and then that’s what you can focus on.
Avoid the Negativity
Next, there’s a flip side to do good, feel good and that’s identifying things that maybe you need to stop or avoid for a little while until you get into a better mental place. For me, social media is one of the things that sometimes I need to step back from and the second is negativity, which sometimes goes hand-in-hand with social media. Social media can be a really big mental and emotional drain. It’s far too easy for us to play the comparison games and to feel bad if you’re already feeling bad. You have the power to unfollow accounts or follow uplifting accounts and positive things that only make you feel good. You can take a break from social media and set healthy boundaries around your social media experiences.
Surround yourself with positive people. When I’m feeling down I can’t be around the energy vampires. If I’m not feeling good about myself or feeling good mentally, then I have to step away from that. I need to be around people are going to uplift me and support me and make me feel better. So you need to also think about the things that you’re going to want to stop and avoid when you’re in that mental place.
Remember You’re Not Alone
Remember, you are not alone. We have ALL been in a rut. Some ruts last hours, some last day and some even years but we are all here to help and support and offer words of encouragement to help you out of that rut. While the Rediscover Me Challenge had hit its 28th day, the group is always open and so many of you have decided to start it again in March. There are also those who are just joining for the first time. No matter what category you fall into, join the challenge, join the amazing group of women and see what kind of life journey it will take you on. It’s not too late, it’s never too late to want to be better versions of ourselves.
Are you in a rut? What’s one thing are you going to do to pull yourself out?
If I wasn’t already excited for spring, all the fun spring trends I’m seeing are making me even more ready to pack away my boots and say “see ya later” to my winter scarves. Some of my favorite spring trends can be found in the accessories department. One of the things I love about accessories is that they are an easy, cost-effective way to change up the look of any outfit. Plus once you have a great foundation of closet staples, changing out your accessories to add a few trendy pieces is pretty easy. Below are my top five wearable accessory trends for the coming spring.
1. Pearls
Pearls sometimes have a stigma attached to them that they are stuffy and outdated and something we only remember our grandmother’s wearing on special occasions. Pearls are taking on a whole new life this season and I’m seeing them everywhere! While you can’t go wrong with the traditional, classic stud, I’m also loving the pearl lined hoops, and the pearls mixed with beads and crystals. They are light and airy and perfect for spring. And did I mention the hair accessories? Dainty pearl headbands or small hair clips with pearls will be the ideal way to add a little something to your hair. So whether you opt for small and dainty or layer them on like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, you can’t go wrong adding pearls to your spring accessory list.
2. Oversized Chain Necklaces
Think of the oversized/chunky chain necklace as the statement necklace of the spring. It comes in a variety of metals like gold and silver but also in super lightweight resin that can be pink or tortoiseshell which is why I’m liking this accessory. There are so many variations that you’re sure to find one that fits your style and your comfort level. If you’re thinking the necklace maybe a touch too “heavy,” try layering it with a daintier necklace to balance it out.
3. Colorful Jewelry
Spring is all about the explosion of color and what better way to show it off than with your accessories. Everything from purses to necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Colorful accessories are an awesome way for this simple jeans and tee-shirt gal to take her look up a notch. The key to this trend is just having fun with it. Mixing textures and colors will keep it fresh and bright.
4. Oversized & Colorful Sunglasses
Sunglasses are getting a retro makeover this spring. While the classic aviators will always be on-trend, oversized, colorful, round and cat-eye sunglasses will be seen a lot this year. I believe that these are timeless styles that just reinvent their popularity every few years. While oversized sunglasses are meant to be just that, oversized, you still want to make sure they don’t swallow up your face. Try to find pairs that aren’t “frame heavy” to ensure that they still have a light fit on your face. Oversized sunglasses are both sophisticated and trendy, just channel your inner Jackie Kennedy and rock those fun spring sunglasses!
5. Bucket Bags
Sometimes practicality wins and such is the case with the popularity of the bucket bag. This handbag is roomy with enough space for all your things but because of the rounded bottoms, it’s typically easier to find what you’re looking for. Then it all closes up neatly at the top either with a zipper closure or a drawstring closure. They can be found in a variety of colors, textures and styles which is why this is such a versatile trend, you’re sure to find one you like and that works with your wardrobe.
Your turn! What spring accessory trend is your favorite?
Wide leg pants – yay or nay? They’re one of the big trends for spring 2020 and if you haven’t warmed up to them yet, this pair might just make you want to. I recently posted these white wide leg pants on GYPO’s Instagram account and got A LOT of feedback from all of you on this trend. It was overwhelmingly positive but there were quite a few comments about wide leg pants that made me want to do some myth busting for you today.
Myth Busting Wide Leg Pants
Myth #1 – They’re Not for Short Gals: Well I stand at only 5’4″ and am able to rock them with a little heel. Quite honestly I’d be even more likely to wear them with a pair of flats.
Myth #2 – They’re Too Dressy: This pair could easily be worn to work BUT I could just as easily pair them up with some slip-on sneakers or sandals and a cardigan for weekends in place of my favorite pair of jeans.
Myth #3 – They Won’t Work for Plus Size: Oh yes they do! This is a style that works for every size. It’s all about balancing proportions.
Hi Pretties! I’m so thrilled because I have an exciting announcement at the end of this, but first, let’s talk about closets. A few years back a suffered from some serious closet shame. There were so many times I would be asked to give a tour of my closet so everyone could see how “organized” it was and truth be told, it was far from it! It was an absolute mess with no organization and it became a space where things were just thrown and stacked up to the ceiling. For more details on my closet shame and how I decided to change things, click on the coffee chat below.
Yes ladies, closet shame is real. There was no way I was going to show you all my closet. And don’t worry, the idea that I’m a blogger who was hiding her closet was not lost on me. Not only was my disastrous, unorganized closet stressing me out in my personal life but my professional one as well.
Enough Was Enough
My closet had become a catch-all for everything, bedsheets, travel stuff we have no idea where else to put, off-season clothes I was holding on to, it was all in there. I finally decided enough was enough and I told Craig it was time to do something about the closet. So we did. One day we went in there and pulled EVERYTHING out. It took a few hours then we sorted through the chaos and put back in only what belonged. We did a few little things to beautify it which you can find on the blog here. I’ve even done a few more upgrades since then (velvet hangers) but they didn’t feel as overwhelming since the bulk of the closet had already been organized. I love my closet now and it doesn’t give me stress anymore which is a wonderful feeling!
Closet Shame Does Not Discriminate
We have all felt that disgust with our closets. I know this because you all told me. We recently did a survey and one of the biggest reasons besides budget that kept you from updating your wardrobe is that your closet is in chaos and the thought of trying to make sense of it is overwhelming. So now there are two factors that may be holding you back from being your true, bright and confident self.

It’s that time of year where I’m really itching to start transitioning my closet over from winter to spring, yet I know it’s WAY too early for that. There will be plenty of sweater days left even for those of us in the south. What I usually end up doing is getting too ahead of myself and then needing to pull my winter clothes back out (or at least layer up A LOT) to keep warm.
For this in between time, I usually pick up a few new pieces of clothing to carry me over until the new season is officially here. I got some really cute new pieces from Ann Taylor’s new spring arrivals this past week and have had a lot of fun pairing them up. If you’ve been watching my Instagram Stories this week, you’ve probably already seen a few of them in my try-on sessions.
One of the big trends again this spring will be high waist jeans. I’ve also seen lots of light wash denim in stores. This pair of high waist sculpting pockets skinny jeans from Ann Taylor checks both boxes! They are really comfortable and flattering in all the right places with just the right amount of stretch.
Do you struggle to put outfits together? Are you stuck in a yoga pants rut? Not sure if you can make the latest trends work for you? You’re in the right place!

I’ve been participating in the GYPO Style Challenges for three years now and I’ve loved it. I’ve always loved clothes, but I didn’t know how to put outfits together. My closet is now full of mix-and-match outfits, I have learned how to dress myself, and there is no more stress in figuring out to wear. The private FB group is full of wonderful ladies that build each other up. It’s so fun and is seriously the best group on FB.

Get Your Pretty On has changed my life, seriously. I have always chased what is trendy but found from season to season, that things go out of style and I was wasting money on items that I would only end up wearing a few times. GYPO has enabled me to simplify my closet, helps me make smarter purchasing decisions, and I feel so put together and confident using the outfit formulas that are provided. This program is a GAME CHANGER. I've been following GYPO for a few years now and my only regret is not jumping on board sooner.

Great community of ladies, helping each other look stylish, without breaking the bank, and using much of what you already own.
Chosen Faith November 19, 2019
GYPO challenges have been one of the best things I have done! It had taught me so much more than just creating a closet of clothes that I love but also to have confidence in myself, how to pick and choose colors that work for me instead of against, and had given a wonderful community of Pretties who are so special.
