What To Wear To A Holiday Party

What To Wear To A Holiday Party

The number one question I get asked this time of year is, “What should I wear to holiday parties?” I too sometimes get stumped with this question. I can easily overthink this and sometimes forget that it can be truly simple. Recently I was getting ready for an event and deliberated about what to wear. The event was all about how to make the holidays easier to handle and I was invited as one of the guest speakers. As I was standing there thinking about what to wear it dawned on me that I was going to wear exactly what I was going to be talking about. It’s an easy outfit formula that I’ve followed the last 4-5 years. For more details about the event and the formula, you can click on the Coffee Chat link below!

So yes, what is this simple outfit formula I speak of?!? It starts out with a black base, Black Top + Black Bottoms and then we accessorize! Now if you’re not a fan of wearing black, if it washes you out, then this formula can also work with winter white or ivory. Or you can swap out the black top for a color that compliments your skin tone. Below I’ve given some more examples and a super simple way to put your outfit together!

Pick Your Top

Whether it’s a sweater, turtleneck, tunic or blouse, pick a black top with some texture that you feel comfortable in.

Black Turtleneck / Black Wrap Blouse / Black Tunic Sweater / Black Button-Down Blouse

Pick Your Bottoms

Opt for some dressy black velvet pants or maybe some black denim. If you feel more like a skirt there’s the classic pencil skirt or perhaps something a little fuller. Don’t forget about your faux leather leggings!

Black Dress Pants / Black Denim / Faux Leather Leggings / Black Pencil Skirt

Pick Your Shoes

Since you’ve got your base, your shoes are an area where you can really have some fun and add your pops of color. The options are endless whether you choose a leopard or snake print or maybe a bright solid color or add some shiny metallic heels! Then there’s also the options of ankle boots, strappy heels or maybe a sophisticated pair of pumps!

Red Heels / Leopard Booties / Metallic Heels / Snake Print Pumps

Pick Your Accessories

Okay, I said shoes are an area where you can really have fun and personalize this formula, but accessories are really just as fun! Here is where you take your outfit to the next level with statement jewelry and a sparkly clutch. Or you can opt for a printed clutch or bright color handbag. Don’t forget the earrings and maybe add a bracelet or two!

Statement Necklace / Pendant Necklace / Hoop Earrings / Bracelet SetStatement Earrings / Sparkly Purse / Printed Clutch

Bonus Top Layer

If you want to add just a touch more to your look, you can easily add a faux fur vest or maybe a beautiful wrap. You can also finish off your look with a leather jacket or maybe a solid or printed cardigan!

Faux Fur Vest / Buffalo Check Poncho / Leather Jacket / Bright Cardigan

For a Dressier Look

And if you want to go for a super dressy look, you can’t go wrong with a little black dress! Add some cute heels, a sparkly clutch and maybe some statement earrings! Below is currently my favorite black dress. I love the way it fits and the lace details make it pop!

Lace Black Dress

See how easy it can be? Just pick an item from each category for a complete holiday look! And it doesn’t have to just work for the holidays, it will work for any event! For my particular event, it was a bit more casual so I wore my black jeans, black wide neck sweater and my leopard booties then added some accessories!

Black Sweater / Black Denim / Leopard Booties / Hoop Earrings / Pendant Necklace

Your turn! Will my go-to formula help make getting ready for your holiday party that much easier?

Four Ways to Wear a Plaid Sheath Dress

Four Ways to Wear a Plaid Sheath Dress

Call this a rare day in blog land because, wait for it….Alison is wearing a dress! Yes, it happens but it’s kind of like spotting a snow leopard, extremely rare and you’ll have good luck the rest of your life if you see it.

Ok, I made that last part up, but anyway. There’s usually one cornerstone piece that I build every single capsule wardrobe around. For the sake of a better term, let’s call it my muse. For the Style Challenges Winter 2019 Work Wear Capsule, this black watch plaid sheath dress was definitely my muse. As soon as I laid eyes on it, I knew it would be the first piece to make it into the capsule.

I ran out to my local J. Crew Factory to buy it and lo and behold, it fit and looked just as good as I could’ve possibly hoped. It’s such a classic staple item too both in lines (sheath dresses NEVER go out of style) and in color/pattern (plaid is a winter constant). Totally worth adding to your closet!

I challenged myself to come up with several ways to wear it since one of the tenets of the Style Challenges program is that a piece has to be paired up in at least 4-5 different ways to make it on the shopping list. This one stretched me a bit but I was able to come up with these four pairings.

I’ve listed the links to the items below, however, there are some that are sold out or the items are from my closet so I’ve listed similar ones.

#1 – Plaid Sheath Dress + Leopard Heels (similar) + Faux Fur Jacket (similar)

For this outfit formula, I paired up the black watch plaid sheath dress with a statement necklace and leopard heels for some fun pattern mixing. This outfit formula stands on it’s own perfectly fine or you can add in a faux fur jacket for holiday parties!

Faux Fur Jacket (similar) / Plaid Sheath Dress  / Leopard Heels (similar)Statement Necklace (Similar)

#2 – Plaid Sheath Dress + Black Turtleneck (similar) + Black Ankle Boots (similar)Leather Jacket

My second pairing is for you ladies in colder climates! I understand that bare arms and legs aren’t feasible in most of the US this time of year. In that case, layer up your dress with a cozy black turtleneck and tights then add ankle boots and a leather jacket!

Leather Jacket / Plaid Sheath Dress / Black Turtle Neck (similar) / Black Tights / Black Ankle Boots (similar)

#3 – Plaid Sheath Dress + Black Cardigan (similar) + Leopard Heels (similar)

Next up, we have an office look that I positively ADORE! When I worked in corporate America, this outfit would’ve been totally me. Just add a black cardigan, long pendant necklace and leopard or black heels!

Plaid Sheath Dress / Black Cardigan (similar) / Leopard Heels (similar) / Pendant Necklace

#4 – Plaid Sheath Dress + White Button Down (similar) + Black Ankle Boots (similar) or Heels

Lastly, you can never go wrong with a white button-down. Layer your dress over one and add a statement necklace over the collar. Finish it out with tights and ankle boots or skip the tights and add heels!

Plaid Sheath Dress / White Button Down (similar) / Black Tights / Black Ankle Boots (similar)

There are limited sizes left in the JCF sheath dress so I’ve included some other fabulous options!

Option 1 / Option 2 / Option 3 / Option 4

All of these outfit ideas are part of our four work week’s worth included in the Style Challenges Winter 2019 Work Wear Capsule Wardrobe. You can join me now HERE.

That’s it, four ways to pair up a plaid sheath dress! Which one was your favorite?

Men’s Gift Giving Guide

Men’s Gift Giving Guide

Whether it’s an adult son, our father-in-law, husband or son-in-law, I think we can all agree that men can be some of the hardest people to shop for. They either don’t want anything or if they do, they just go out and get it themselves. This means sometimes we need to think outside the box and get creative. So to help you shop for that difficult male, whoever it may be, I did a little research, got some ideas from the GYPO team and of course consulted with Craig to get some fun gift ideas. Below are my top 10 gift ideas for men!

It also got great reviews but if you want to check out some of the other models and brands there are to choose from, click here. You’re sure to find one that will make the perfect gift!

4. Wohven Tee Subscription

Wohven is a monthly subscription service where you can select from either solid or graphic tees, crew or V neck. This is a fun idea where you can cancel at any time meaning you can choose to do only a few months or even a whole year plus. Simply choose which subscription you want, then sit back and watch the stylish basics roll in every month. Check out some of their past designs on their website.

5. Anker Wireless Charger

It’s almost 2020 and who has time for cords, so why not give that special guy an Anker Wireless Charger? Not only will this allow him to charge his phone easier, but also quicker. Plus you can charge it vertically or horizontally making it easy to use while it’s charging. Note: Just be sure to verify that it will work with your desired model of phone or device.

6. The Tile

Eliminate wasted time looking for lost keys, cell phones, wallets, remote controls and more with the simple to use Tile and app. Simply attach one of the different models of the Tile to the items of your choice and easily located it using Bluetooth technology and an app on your phone. You can also use the Tile in reverse to locate your phone, even if it’s on silent. I can’t even pretend this is just a great gift for the guys, because I can think of a few ways this could make my life easier as well.

7. Wenger MoveUp Laptop Backpack

Whether he’s traveling state to state, doing his daily commute or walking between classes, this laptop backpack is both functional and sleek. It has a dedicated, padded pocket for his laptop and smaller compartments for other accessories. Plus it’s water-resistant so he won’t have to worry about his stuff getting wet when traveling in the rain. I could totally see this backpack being used on a college campus or in an office environment making it extremely versatile.

8. Bombas

Yes, I know sock may seem like a total cliché gift, but Bombas are amazing socks! They hold up really well and come in a variety of styles including ankle socks, calf socks, hiking socks, and dress socks. They also range in designs from classic and simple to unique and festive. Best of all, not only are you giving a great gift, but you’re helping a great organization. Bombas works with shelters, nonprofits, and organizations dedicated to helping the homeless, in-need, and at-risk communities. For every pair bought, one pair is donated and to date, they’ve donated over 28 million clothing items.

9. Apple Airpods

Another way to get rid of pesky cords is with Apple’s Earpods. They come in their own little charging case and can easily connect to your devices. I love how discreet they look and you won’t have to worry about a wire flopping around while working out. Not only do they provide great audio, but the microphone allows for phone conversation as well as Siri capabilities.

10. Forest & Harrold Slim Fit Wallet

This is perfect for the man who doesn’t like a lot of bulk in his pocket or is looking to downsize his wallet! It comes in a variety of color combinations and a few different styles to choose from. The style pictured above holds between 6-10 cards and up to 15 bills comfortably and measures 4.25″ x 2.75″. It’s also RFID protected for added security of your credit and debit cards.

Bonus: Experiences

Lastly, you can never go wrong with gifting experiences whether it’s dinner out, tickets to their favorite sporting event or a movie. Why not plan a special trip or travel to his favorite restaurant, or place, even if it’s a couple hours away. Make a day of it and have fun! This is a chance to get creative and it doesn’t have to be expensive, just use your imagination and you can create a fun memory that won’t be forgotten!

Five Days of Winter Outfits

Five Days of Winter Outfits

As you all may know, I get pretty excited about fall around here. I love the coziness that the cooler weather brings and with that the fun fall clothes. With that said, however, I think I just may be even more excited for this winter’s fashion lineup! While most of my outfits do center around closet staples, I’m excited to incorporate some of this winter’s trends as well as fall favorites that are sticking around for the coming season.

I know I usually say this every season, be it spring, summer, fall or winter, that it’s the busiest time of year. It’s just a fact, that each season brings its own sort of craziness whether it’s the holiday hustle and bustle, the schedules of the school year, or the kids home for the summer. While I am learning to appreciate the moments of both peace and chaos, I will still take any time-saving opportunity or life hack I can. And easily knowing what I’m going to be wearing each morning is a true timesaver that I’m sure we can all appreciate.

That is why I truly love being able to offer the Style Challenges Winter 2019 Capsule Wardrobe! Not only does it help take the guesswork out of getting ready but the confidence that comes from feeling put together and feeling great can be life-changing. If you’re new to GYPO and you’re wondering what the Style Challenges are, imagine that for 31 days you don’t have to think about what you’re going to wear.

First, I provide a list of pieces you’ll need. While I do provide shopping suggestions, I always recommend shopping your closet first. Then, fill in the gaps using any store and price range you want. Finally, see how the items are pieced together to create a complete look and spend the next month getting ready on cruise control. The best part is it’s totally customizable to what you want and what you feel comfortable in. Enjoy the outfit formulas below and make them your own

Below are five outfits pulled from the Style Challenges Winter 2019 Capsule Wardrobe to help you get the most out of your winter wardrobe and save some minutes in your morning.

These are a Few of My Favorite Things

These are a Few of My Favorite Things

Whether you’ve been shopping since Halloween or are just breaking out your Christmas tree, I think we can all agree that it’s officially time to welcome the holidays with open arms! It is full-on holiday music, twinkling lights, and Hallmark movies time and I couldn’t be happier. So in honor of the holidays, I’m putting together some gift-giving ideas that may be able to help you with your holiday shopping. Today I’m starting by listing my top 10 favorite items of the year.

1. Dolly Lamb Leather Moto Jacket

I finally upgraded my pleather moto jacket to the “real deal” earlier this year and I couldn’t be happier. This one is so soft and beautiful and great quality, especially for the price. I also love the style and the subtle gold hardware accents. Hands down one of my favorite purchases of 2019!
Sizing Tip: I have it in a size small. You may want to size up if you plan to layer it.

2. IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream with SPF 50

I consistently get asked what makeup I’m wearing in my Coffee Chat videos and the answer is always the same, IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream in Neutral Medium. If I were stuck on a deserted island, THIS would be the only thing I need (bonus, it has SPF 50). It gives my skin a natural, dewy look and it’s just the right coverage and weight, not heavy at all.

3. KISS Lashes in #11

Another FAQ from Coffee Chat is “what brand of lash strips do you use?” Last year I developed a terrible allergy to eyelash extensions. That’s when I discovered KISS Lashes in #11. I adhere mine with the black lash glue and they last all day with ZERO irritation.

4. Spanx Faux Leather Leggings

If you saw my latest IGTV video you know that these are a staple in my winter wardrobe! I love the high waist and how they “suck everything in” while still being comfortable and slightly edgy.
P.S. We’ll be styling these on the Style Challenges Winter 2019 Capsule Wardrobe! Sign up now to get in on the fun.

5. Alison + Aubrey 18K Gold Baguette Hoops

We just got these in stock a few weeks ago and I don’t think a day has gone by yet that I haven’t worn them! They are just THE perfect size, amazing quality, and go with literally everything. These are my new daily go-to staple earrings! P.S. They also come in Sterling Silver and make an awesome gift!

6. Alison + Aubrey Fine Line 18K CZ Open Circle Necklace

Same as above. I wear this necklace on an almost-daily basis. It’s delicate with just a tiny bit of sparkle. The quality is great, I’ve been wearing it for over a year with no tarnishing or wear and tear at all.

7. Leopard Booties

Really, leopard everything but let’s focus on booties since I’m narrowing this to a top ten list. Leopard booties (and shoes) just add that extra little fun detail to every outfit and they pattern mix perfectly. Remember leopard IS a neutral!

8. Nike Epic React Flyknit 2 Sneakers

I just asked for my fifth pair of these for Christmas. These have been my go-to running shoes for the past few years. They are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn in my entire life and make my knees happy on the treadmill. I’ve converted so many family members and friends that Nike should be paying me!

9. Adidas Stan Smith Sneakers

This was the surprise of the year for me. These sneakers weren’t really what I considered “my style” but I’ve worn them SO much since I bought them. They’re incredibly comfortable and give all of my casual outfits a fun, modern feel!

10. The GYPO Community

WHAT? You can’t buy that but it just had to be on the list of my favorite things this year. Want to know why? Because I’ve been really open and vulnerable this past year on everything from not feeling like one of the “cool girls” to hormones and sex drive. You’ve come around to support me in ways that I never would have dreamed. Not to mention all that you do for each other! You are truly my biggest blessing and I so appreciate YOU!

Did this list help you cross anyone off your list? Are there any items you’re adding to YOUR wish list?
