Stress Less this Holiday Season

Stress Less this Holiday Season

by Jessica Pigza

It is December! When did that happen? Didn’t we just finish with Halloween and now Thanksgiving is over too? The countdown to Christmas is in full swing and if you’re anything like me, the anticipation and panic of the holidays have well set in.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the holiday season and Christmas is my favorite time of year. I love the music, the food, the decorations and the snow. But over the past few years, as much as I love the holidays, I find myself mentally and physically preparing for the pressure that comes with my desire to make everything perfect.

The countdown is on! They love moving the snowflake every morning and counting how many days until Christmas. And yes, there isn’t a 17, but the kids think it’s hilarious and their giggles make me smile.

To prepare my body for this time of year I usually start taking Airborne every night beginning around Thanksgiving. I do this because I know the coming weeks are going to be busy, chaotic and involve a lot of late nights. I spend so much time thinking about what I’ve done and what needs to be done that I miss out on the fun. There’s the school productions, work parties, kids’ parties, sending cards, baking cookies and decorating. Then there are also the gifts for the neighbors, the kids’ teachers, family and friends. I make it such a drain on my mind, body, and spirit that sometimes I find myself not enjoying my favorite time of year.

I also suffer from something that I call procrastinating perfectionism. It’s a horrible combination that usually leads to stress and chaos. I want everything to be perfect but sometimes inspiration strikes at the last minute so I’m in a tizzy trying to get it all done.

Then finally, it’s Christmas day which will mark the end of my race. With all my adrenaline gone and the long nights, bad eating and stress from the past month catching up with me and I will most likely be sick come New Year. Last year I didn’t even make it to Christmas Day. I was so sick I couldn’t move off the couch starting Christmas Eve. I missed it, putting out cookies for Santa, writing the note, reading Twas the Night Before Christmas. And for what? For this idea of perfection that no one else puts on me but myself. I don’t want my kids to remember Christmas time as just the time of year that mom always goes nuts – right?

Starbucks and I met when we lived near Seattle, WA and my son decided he didn’t need to sleep at night…ever. Then I started collecting their ornaments every year and eventually had enough to create our little Starbucks tree. And since all my kids were born in WA I even found the ornaments that were made in the years they were born. Every year my kids love decorating this tree and finding their cups!

But sadly I feel that I have let my kids down in years past, making the holidays a stressful time of year instead of enjoying these moments while they are still young. They are the perfect age where they still want to be with me and they still have the wonder and excitement of the holidays in their eyes. They still believe in the magic! I NEED to remember that when my kids look back, they will not remember every single gift that was under the tree, or if the house was decorated with precision, but they will remember what we did as a family. And whether or not mom was smiling or screaming.

So this holiday season I’m trying desperately to chill out and keep things fun. I’m going to not let things overwhelm me and remember the true meaning and spirit of this time of year. To accomplish this I’m working on a few things that I hope will help with the holiday stress. Wish me luck!

1. Prioritize

What are the most important things I want to do this holiday season? Are they things that really matter to me or am I just checking a box of what I’m supposed to do this holiday season? Baking cookies perhaps? Or maybe Christmas cards are super important. Prioritizing is a step that will help me to relax more this time of year. For me, we decorated the inside of the house but we didn’t get to the outside this year and I’m okay with that. Also, formal pictures are a no-go this year too. I’m not going to have time to put together coordinating outfits and have professional pictures done. I will save that for the springtime when life is a little more chill. Don’t get me wrong, I do want some family pictures, but I’m going try to get some when we’re already dressed up for one of the events I still plan on enjoying with my family.

2. Simplify

This is the biggest one! Every year I spend countless hours shopping and trying to find the best deals. With Black Friday now starting the week before Thanksgiving, it seems that prices are always changing and I’m always chasing the best deal. So I’ve decided that I’m cutting back on the number of gifts the kids are getting. (My husband is pretty happy about this one) The reality is they don’t need much and a few really thoughtful gifts are much better than a bunch of filler gifts that in the end, just take up time, space and money. Plus I don’t need anything else to trip over when I kiss my kids goodnight. I would just get so focused on making sure they had a bunch of things to open that I lost sight of what was really important and what this season is really about.

Also, I really enjoy baking cookies but instead of making dozens and dozens of different kinds of cookies, I could pick out just a few favorites and make those. I can also let go a little and let my munchkins help out more with tasks that I know they can handle. Since I’m always in a rush trying to get the next thing accomplished they don’t always help me in the kitchen. This is something I know I will look back on and regret. Some cookies may not be picture perfect, but they will still taste delicious. The kitchen will be a bigger mess, but my hope is that if everyone is still smiling at the end. Plus practice is the only way my little bakers will get better.

3. Now Make a List

Make a list, a realistic one and stick to it. Now that I’ve figured out how I’m going to prioritize and simplify, I need to write it down and stick to it. It’s so easy to get swept up in the events and sales of the season. That is why I’m putting pen to paper and using my list as my guide. Not only will it help keep me on track but it will also help keep me on budget. (Another thing my husband is happy about) Normally I just wing it when it comes to buying gifts and end up with stuff I don’t need or they don’t want. Plus I’m never finished. I also get sucked into sales because I don’t have a guide to follow and end up spending way more then I had anticipated. The best thing about a list is that it gets things out of my head. I can just look at my list and enjoy the satisfaction of crossing things off of it which means there is an end, I’ll know when everything is done and I can enjoy Christmas even more.

So what are some of your ideas to make the holidays a little less stressful?

Pretty Fix December: Three Ways to Wear a Twist Front Sweater

Pretty Fix December: Three Ways to Wear a Twist Front Sweater

Hey pretties!  Happy December!  Let’s just pretend like this isn’t already the second week of the month and I didn’t forget to do the Pretty Fix, last week, ok?  Yep, it’s shaping up to be that kind of month!

If you’re new around here and wondering what the heck the Pretty Fix is, well it’s my pieces I pick for you to stay on trend every month. You can shop where you want (or shop your closet) to pair up an outfit.  The idea for it was born out of your dissatisfaction with the quality and price of some of the box styling services out there.  I give you the ideas, you set the budget and do the shopping!

This month’s Pretty Fix is like a normal fix on steroids because you’re getting three outfits instead of just one! When this twisted front cozy fleece sweater landed on my doorstep last week, I couldn’t resist putting together a few looks around it.  The good news is that every single piece (other than the sweater) is on the shopping list of the Winter 2017 GYPO Style Challenge – bonus, even more wear from those pieces!

This cozy lightweight fleece sweater comes in 18 different colors and no matter which one (or ones) you pick, you can still pair them up like I did in the three outfits below and it will totally work!  The color I’m wearing is called “Blue Ceramic”.

Sizing Tip:  This sweater runs a size big, I ordered an XS and it fits perfectly.

Outfit #1

Twist Front Cozy Fleece + Fur Scarf + Winter White Cords + Riding Boots

This outfit is what I wore to do some Christmas shopping recently.  It was a chilly day so I threw this velvet puffer vest on top to stay snuggly warm.

Outfit #2

Twist Front Cozy Fleece + Pendant Necklace + Velvet Pants + Leopard Booties

Let’s agree that teal and leopard were made for each other, right?  Add in some velvet jeans and this is totally holiday party appropriate!

SAHMonday: Buffalo Plaid Cape and UGG Boots

SAHMonday: Buffalo Plaid Cape and UGG Boots

Welcome to another edition of SAHMonday – outfit inspiration just for the stay at home and work from home moms of the world (like me!) who aren’t heading out of the house on Monday morning.  You can check out the other outfits in this series here.

These outfits are perfect for when you want to feel comfortable, yet put together, so that you can face the day and any errands you may need to run.  Plus, most of these outfit formulas can be pulled straight from your closet!

Buffalo Plaid Cape Outfits

Ok, so I’m kind of cheating because you’ve already seen a version of this outfit in my Plaid and Leopard Holiday Outfits post but I love this buffalo plaid cape SO much that I had to keep styling it.  Plus I don’t buy new clothes very often so when I do, I like to pair them up in as many ways as possible.

Today I’m styling this cape in a more casual SAHM appropriate way with a black turtleneck sweater, comfy stretch jeans and cozy faux fur lined UGG boots. Take off the necklace and pull on some leggings and this outfit is perfect for lounging in front of the fireplace with a warm mug of something in your hands!

To be completely honest, even though I’m wearing my UGG boots in these pics, I was schlepping around the house in my slippers and (matching) buffalo plaid socks most of the day! #keepingitreal

You too can have all the glamour and luxury of this fashionable combo – slippers $12.99 at Walmart and socks $1.99 at Michael’s.  🙂

One of the many things I love about this cape is it’s reversible so you can choose between the larger or smaller buffalo plaid pattern.  Here it is with the smaller pattern facing out.

See how easy it is to dress this outfit up just by swapping out the UGG boots to leopard ankle booties?

Outfit #4

If you get a little too warm, you can remove the cape and still have a super cute outfit that works for just about any holiday event.  All black is ALWAYS in style! (You have to check out the back of this shirt, super cute, right?)

Pretty Profile – Meet Tammy!

Pretty Profile – Meet Tammy!

Welcome to our Pretty Profile where we will be featuring one of our amazing GYPO Style Challenge Pretties! Have you been curious about the GYPO Style Challenges but you’re not totally sure what they’re all about? In short, they are a resource, a learning tool, a confidence builder and a gateway to meeting some amazing women! Not only are you receiving the benefits of knowing what you’re going to wear each day, but even more than that, you also have the benefit of meeting the most amazing, supportive group of women in our private Facebook group. They just have so much to offer which is why we asked some of our Pretties to share with us what the Style Challenges have meant to them.

Meet today’s pretty, Tammy S.

1. What ‘season of life’ are you currently in?

Just turned 50 and I am struggling with almost being an empty nester. Never thought that would happen but it’s real life. After being a mom for 26 years, I am working on figuring out the next chapter. It’s hard but very exciting!

2. What led you to try out a GYPO Style Challenge?

I had been following GYPO and thought about trying one but never did. After seeing the annual membership sale last year, I decided to give it a try!

3. What’s your best advice for first time Style Challengers?

You can try new things and still stay true to yourself. You don’t have to purchase everything. The Facebook group is amazing and you will get so much out of participating with all of the other incredible women of all ages in the group.

4. What piece from your closet do you feel your best in?

Right now my new Blank NYC jeans.

5. What are your favorite stores to shop?

Loft and Target

6. How has GYPO Style Challenges impacted your life?

I have always loved fashion and have a pretty decent wardrobe but I wasn’t wearing any of it on a daily basis. I didn’t realize how much I was wearing athletic wear until I joined the challenges and started getting so many compliments. The eye opener was when someone said, “Wow, you’re dressed again!”

7. If you are an annual member, what was your favorite benefit of the annual membership?

I like purchasing up front and then not worrying about it again and I like being able to see all of the outfits right away.
You can learn more about Tammy at her blog Small Gestures Matter where she shares tips for creating an inviting home!

I Feel Pretty Festive: Leopard and Plaid Holiday Looks

I Feel Pretty Festive: Leopard and Plaid Holiday Looks

Hey pretties!  It’s officially December and the rush is on!  Holiday parties have already started kicking off for Craig and me. I swear they start earlier every year. But I don’t really mind, it’s kind of nice to have them spread out instead of all falling around the same time.  We’re taking a slow approach to Christmas this year and trying to enjoy everything instead of rushing through it just to check an item off a to-do list.  Which would explain why our outside lights have been a “work in progress” for the past two weeks.  Sorry neighbors!  🙂

For me, leopard and plaid has always felt really festive and special so I knew I was going to build my two new holiday party looks around this festive pattern mix.  Since all of the parties we are going to are somewhat casual, Loft ended up being the perfect solution for finding a few new pieces.  Here are the two outfits I’ll be wearing to all of our Christmas parties this year.

Outfit #1

Plaid Blouse + Pearl Necklace + Gray Jeans + Leopard Booties

My plaid blouse is running low on stock, but this ruffled one is adorable and on sale, so is this bell sleeved plaid top and this off the shoulder version.

If you don’t want to make the investment into my leopard calf hair bootiesthis pair is a bit more budget friendly, especially if these are an occasional wear item. P.S. I don’t regret the investment at all because I’ve worn the heck out of mine already!

Outfit #2

Buffalo Plaid Cape + Bar Back Tee + Pendant Necklace + Velvet Pants + Leopard Booties

I especially LOVE that this buffalo plaid is reversible.  Here it is with the smaller plaid check turned out.

This bar back tee is a piece that stands on it’s own.  You can remove the cape and still have a perfectly chic outfit!

Buffalo plaid is a winter staple!  You can try it out in other ways like this buffalo plaid ruffle shirt or a basic buffalo plaid button down.
