SAHMonday: Long Cardigan Two Ways + Sneak Peek!

Welcome to another edition of SAHMonday – outfit inspiration just for the stay at home and work from home moms of the world (like me!) who aren’t heading out of the house on Monday morning. Today we are going to talk about what to wear under a long cardigan, you can check out the other outfits in this series, like Styling a Striped Top, here.

These outfits are perfect for when you want to feel comfortable, yet put together so that you can face the day and any errands you may need to run.  Plus, most of these outfit formulas can be pulled straight from your closet!

What to Wear Under a Long Cardigan – Two Ways

You’ve probably noticed that a lot of my outfits lately are reusing pieces from past Style Challenges – like this long cardigan and my ponte leggings. Today’s post is no exception and includes pieces from the past year of challenges including my white tee and burgundy tunic tee, riding boots and slip-on sneakers. I love having a closet full of mix and match staples that I can always find new ways to pair up. Just add accessories!

What to Wear Under a Long Cardigan Outfit #1

For my first outfit, I paired up my long cardigan with a white slouchy tee, my new light blue corduroy pants and riding boots. The statement necklace was from the Fall 2017 GYPO Style Challenge but is now sold out, I’ve linked up a similar one below the picture.

Are you looking for ideas of what to wear under a long cardigan? This post is for you, the best thing is you might just have all you need already!

This is my first pair of ear climbers and I’m totally in love with them! They pair perfectly with statement necklaces.

For a more casual look, you can remove the statement necklace and replace it with a pendant necklace, or skip both!

Have you been curious about the GYPO Style Challenge but you’re not totally sure what it’s all about? In short, they are a resource, a learning tool, a confidence builder and a gateway to meeting some amazing women! Not only are you receiving the benefits of knowing what you’re going to wear each day, but even more than that, you also have the benefit of meeting the most amazing, supportive group of women in our private Facebook group. They just have so much to offer which is why we asked some of our Pretties to share with us what the Style Challenges have meant to them.

Meet today’s pretty, Jennifer H.

1. What ‘season of life’ are you currently in?

Parenting a little!

2. What led you to try out a GYPO Style Challenge?

I am a “fashionista” of sorts but always ended up with way too many clothes that I didn’t know how to put together. I love being shown exactly what to wear, and saving money by having a capsule!

3. What’s your best advice for first time Style Challengers?

Buy what you love! Don’t just “buy to buy.” Make sure it fits, the color flatters you, etc.

4. What piece from your closet do you feel your best in?

Fur Vest

5. What are your favorite stores to shop?

Express, New York & Company

6. How has GYPO Style Challenges impacted your life?

I save money, feel put together and save time. I struggle with chronic illness and this helps me to get out of bed and get in real clothes each day.

I Feel Pretty: Two Winter Outfits + Winter Challenge Giveaway!

I Feel Pretty: Two Winter Outfits + Winter Challenge Giveaway!

Happy hump day pretties! Well our house is officially Christmas-fied and there’s nothing left to do but relax, watch Hallmark movies and sip wine between now and the big day.  Ha! I wish.  More like the frenzy is just beginning. But at least now that our kids are older, gift buying is SO much easier. They’re into one or two big gifts instead of dozens of small ones.  Less shopping + less wrapping = win/win.

Did you all get out on Black Friday for any good deals? I’ve never shopped it in my entire life although my daughter Aubrey and I have stumbled into Target late in the evening by accident the past three or so years.  This year it was to get coffee. While we were there we checked out their deals but didn’t see anything we couldn’t live without.  We also realized that if we went on Black Friday “by accident” three years in a row, we also accidentally created a tradition!  🙂

I did shop at Loft over the weekend and took advantage of their sale to stock up on a few new things for winter.  I’ll post those soon but for now here are some outfits in real life that were in my Four Days of Winter Outfits flat lay post last week.

Outfit #1

Velvet Vest + Floral Top + Corduroy Pants + Pearl Necklace + Taupe Ankle Boots

Last week, we established that pastels are downright magical for winter.  Can I get an amen? When I saw this light pink floral top with a gathered bottom, I couldn’t wait to pair it up with these pretty soft brushed cords. The color is called silver shadow online but they are definitely pale blue in real life.

This pearl statement necklace elevates the whole outfit to make it work for a casual holiday party.  Finish it all out with these super comfy taupe booties.

Sizing Tip:  I’m wearing a medium in the top and got my regular size in the pants (they have plenty of stretch).

UPDATE:  So I’m beyond bummed out that this top is nearly sold out now in every size BUT this outfit would also look great with a sweater like this one with bell sleeves or this cozy blouson or even this cute polar bear sweater.

Yes I’m going to gush over this GORGEOUS velvet puffer vest again because it’s absolute perfection! Seriously the quality on it is amazing, it’s even prettier in person. See how it takes this outfit up another notch!  Oh and it’s ON SALE. If you get just one new item this winter, let this be it.  I promise you’ll love it as much as I do and if you don’t, you can send me a mean e-mail, I can handle it!

Sizing Tip: I got an XS in the vest, it fits generously. If in doubt, size down.

Outfit #2

Cold Shoulder Sweater + Back Zip Leggings + Pendant Necklace + Leopard Booties

Last week I posted about the wrinkles and general dishevelment of my cold shoulder sweater in this pic. That’s because it was still wet after it’s second washing in a week. I CAN’T STOP wearing it!  For an instant outfit, just add skinny jeans (LOVE the zippers on this plum pair) and leopard ankle boots. Finish it off with a rose gold pendant necklace and pave earrings.

The Loft web site calls these pants “leggings” but I’d definitely say they look and feel more like skinny jeans and are a denim material.

Sizing Tip:  The skinny jeans are true to size but stretch a little, if in doubt, size down.  This sweater is true to size and I’m wearing a size small.

Let’s pause to appreciate these leopard booties for just a moment.  They’re my first pair and I can’t believe I’m just now getting on this band wagon! They’re the pair I keep reaching for in my closet everyday because they just seem to go with everything. #leopardisaneutral

Winter Challenge News and Giveaway

Registrations opens this Friday, December 1st for the Winter 2017 GYPO Style Challenge!  We’ll be styling some of these pieces and many others in our 34 days of mix and match outfits.

If you’re new around here, I started the first Style Challenge in Spring of 2014 based upon feedback from a reader survey. You asked me to give you a shopping list of classic basics and seasonal trends that you could shop for on your own.  After putting together that first list, I took it one step further to create mix and match outfit ideas from the pieces on that list. And the first capsule wardrobe was born!

Since then, over 10,000 women in 20 different countries have participated in a Style Challenge.

What it Is:

You’ve probably seen a lot of capsule wardrobe programs popping up lately but the GYPO Style Challenge is the first and original style challenge. You may be asking why pay for something you can find online for free. Well, none of those free programs provide you with as much support, detailed instructions and bonuses as the Style Challenge.

It’s called a challenge only because it “challenges” you to get out of your comfort zone to try new styles – there’s no competition!

Step 1: You get a shopping list of classic basics and seasonal trends with everything you need to create a mix and match capsule wardrobe. You have two weeks to get all of the pieces on the list. You’re free to spend as much or as little as you want but most women shop their closets first! I also provide you with a robust directory of online shopping links from stores you love. Plus we reuse pieces from past challenges so each season builds upon the others. After you participate once, you’re never starting from scratch!

Step 2: After those pieces are in place, you’ll get a daily outfit e-mail each day for 34 days showing you how to pair your pieces up into on-trend looks that work for your daily life. Imagine waking up every day and knowing EXACTLY what to wear! It makes getting dressed a no-brainer.

Step 3: Show off your new style in our private Facebook group. This is honestly the best part of the challenge! Thousands of women have made real life friends and explored style in this safe, supportive community of like minded women. We share shopping tips, fit advice and our own unique takes on the daily outfits. You will get SO much inspiration just from being in this group.

More Benefits:

Style Challenge Members Only Site – The original Style Challenge is the only one that includes access to the Style Challenges membership site. It’s a handy directory of resources and every Style Challenge you’ve ever purchased all in one place!

Recommended Items Directory – Inside the membership site is an online evergreen catalog of updated shopping links at a variety of price points to the stores you love most. This challenge’s Recommended Items Directory has more shopping options than ever before. You’ll be able to shop classic “basics” or substitute the trendier item for each piece on the list. These links are updated throughout the season so you always have resources for items to buy.

FAQ’s:

How Much Will I Need to Spend on the Shopping List Items?

That’s totally up to you.  Most women shop their closets first and find that they have quite a few items on the list already. Some are starting from scratch.  I recommend that you set a budget to work within and find the pieces you absolutely love. I also recommend that you take your time to curate the items on the list.  It’s better to wait for a piece that you’ll continue to wear and love than to rush to get all of them at once. Each seasonal capsule builds on other capsules so you should never have to do as much shopping as you do the first time.  Many women are able to completely shop their closets and add in just some fun trends after a few rounds.

Will this Work for My Weather?

Yes!  Women from all over the U.S., Canada and even Europe participate in the challenge and make it work for their climate. You’ll get so much inspiration just from joining the Facebook group.

What Style are the Outfits?

There’s a good mix of casual every day and dressy casual looks.  You can make your own tweaks to the daily outfit prompt to make it work for everything from a day at home to office appropriate.

Do I Have to Style them Every Day?

Nope!  You’re welcome to skip when you want to.  These outfits are just styling suggestions.  Some women choose to participate every day in the Facebook group while others prefer to sit back, watch and learn.  You’re also welcome to substitute some of your favorite pieces from your closet to avoid repetition.  The point of the challenge is to show you how to pair up your pieces in multiple ways.

If you have any other questions about the GYPO Style Challenge, feel free to e-mail me and ask away!

Not Your Typical Teacher Gift Guide

Not Your Typical Teacher Gift Guide

by Jessica Pigza

It’s that time of year again where I make my list and check it twice. I really do enjoy planning and shopping for thoughtful gifts for those I love and who are important to me. Some people are extremely easy to shop for while others leave me scratching my head. One group of amazing individuals that make me ponder the perfect gift are teachers. Every day they actively engage, encourage and teach my children, showing amazing amounts of patience, patience that I wished I possessed. So what do you get for someone who spends 6-7 hours a day, five days a week with your child(ren), yet you do not know them in a truly personal way? To help me answer this question I surveyed a bunch of teachers and some of their responses surprised me. After reading their responses and my own experiences, I put together some ideas along with some do’s and don’t that are sure to help make picking that perfect teacher’s gift a little easier.

1. Steer Clear of Scented Gifts

Scents are such a personal thing and many people may have allergies or aversions to scented products. Unless you know for sure that your teacher loves vanilla scented candles and they can’t get enough of them, it’s better to stay away from giving scented gifts. But, if you do know your teacher adores candles, then try a cool twist on the classic candle. Woodwick Candles crackle as they burn. They really do sound like the gentle crackling of a wood burning fireplace, which is nice to hear, especially if you do not have a fireplace. I love the sound and smell of these candles!

Café Sweets Trilogy – Vanilla Bean, Caramel, Biscotti

2. Gifts for the Classroom

Every year teachers spend hundreds of their own dollars on their classrooms and their students. They buy things to brighten up and organize their rooms, to engage and reward their students and to provide for those who may not be able to provide for themselves. No matter the reason, your child’s classroom looks the way it does because of all the additional money the teachers spend to make it that way. That is why teachers are always appreciative of receiving school supplies for the holidays. Anything from stickers and pencils to Sharpies and storage containers. Teachers love anything that is practical and useful, especially in their classroom. Why not give a storage container full of school supplies?

Tip: At the beginning of the year some teachers will put together and post a classroom wish list. Why not check back with them to see if there are items that weren’t purchased or that they’ve already run out of.

Reward Stickers
Elementary teachers especially go through thousands of stickers a year. This is always a good gift idea.

18 Count Fine Point Sharpie

With all the writing, labeling and marking, teachers are always running out of markers.

X-ACTO Bulldog Vacuum Mount Manual Pencil Sharpener

Kids are rough on pencil sharpeners and with so many pencils to sharpen each year, teachers may go through 4-6 sharpeners a year. Plus it’s more efficient to have more than one sharpener available for students to use.

3. Food Treats Can Be Tricky

When asked whether or not teachers like food items as gifts it was a toss-up. Same with the scented gifts, some people have food allergies or aversions and unless you know for certain they can eat it, I wouldn’t give it. However, if you know your teacher eats gluten-free, you could put together a little basket of gluten-free goodies. If dark chocolate is their thing, splurge on a bar of good dark chocolate.

Endangered Species Natural Dark Chocolate

Cybeles Free to Eat Cookies Gluten Free Vegan Oatmeal Rasin

4. Gift Cards are Very Much Appreciated

Originally, I thought to give a teacher a gift card was taking the easy way out and would come across as impersonal. I’m not sure why I thought that way because personally, I love getting gift cards! That being said, Teachers LOVE gift cards too! If you know where they like to eat or shop go ahead and get that specific place. However, if you’re not sure, get one for somewhere that has a little bit of everything like Target, Walmart or Amazon, which seemed to be the survey favorite.

Amazon Gift Card with Snowflake Tin

Amazon has so many cute gift cards and some came with cute little gift bags or tins like this one.

5. Handmade Student Gifts

After reading all the answers to my survey questions, one thing that surprised me the most was just how much teachers value the simple gifts made by the students with an emphasis on notes of appreciation. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be from the heart. Personalized ornaments, a picture frame with a picture of the student and the teacher or something they can hang in the classroom. It’s something they can look at year after year and remind them of just how many little lives they have touched and why they do what they do.

Unfinished Wood Frame By ArtMinds 4″ x 6″

Pick up an unfinished wood frame and have your child decorate it using, paint, feathers, glitter or whatever you have on hand.

Wooden Christmas Tree Ornaments – 30 pieces

Cover up the table, give the kids some paint or even markers and let them go to town decorating some wooden ornaments. They are great for teacher gifts or even family members.

Some snowflake ornaments the kids painted to give to teachers, family and friends this year.

Bonus: It’s Okay to Ask

Still not sure what to get? I learned that it’s okay to ask, but asking the right questions will make the whole scenario less awkward. Just asking a teacher what they would like for a gift puts them in a weird position that they’re not really sure how to respond to. Instead, be more specific with your questions. Are you a coffee drinker? What is your favorite restaurant? One mom even suggested that if she loves something they are wearing she always asks where they got it. That way it gives her an idea where they shop, plus she knows where she can snag one for herself. By asking more specific questions, it takes the pressure off the teacher, but still gives you some insight as to what they like.

Tip: If you are really on the ball, some teachers said they have received Teacher Favorites questionnaires from their students at the beginning of the year. This quick little questionnaire can make gift giving a whole lot easier throughout the year. You can make your own or find one already done online.

Bottom line is that it truly is the thought that counts. Teachers love to and deserve to feel appreciated, especially this time of year. I know how crazy my three kids are at home during the holidays, I couldn’t even imagine trying to keep a whole classroom of kids focused, engaged and in their seats. I also know I don’t have what it takes to be a teacher so a very big THANK YOU to all those who do!

It’s Your Turn:  Share your favorite teacher gift ideas with us in the comments!

SAHMonday: Three Plaid Shirt and Leggings Outfits

SAHMonday: Three Plaid Shirt and Leggings Outfits

Welcome to another edition of SAHMonday – outfit inspiration just for the stay at home and work from home moms of the world (like me!) who aren’t heading out of the house on Monday morning.  You can check out the other outfits in this series here.

These outfits are perfect for when you want to feel comfortable, yet put together, so that you can face the day and any errands you may need to run.  Plus, most of these outfit formulas can be pulled straight from your closet!

Plaid Shirt, Leggings and Riding Boots – Three Ways

I’m not going to lie, this outfit was not my idea. The other day at Target, I saw a girl dressed in a plaid shirt, leggings and riding boots and couldn’t wait to get home and try it out (because I, of course, was still in all of my yoga pants glory).

For my base outfit I started with my red plaid shirt (which is now on clearance). Although the shirt is long enough to wear with my ponte leggings, I like the addition of a long white tank for some extra coverage.  Yes, these riding boots ARE an investment but one I promise you won’t regret.  I’ve had mine for almost five years and they’re still the pair I reach for most often.  On a cost per wear basis, they’ve been worth every penny!

Base Outfit

Plaid Shirt + Long Tank + Ponte Leggings + Riding Boots

This base outfit certainly works all by itself and is just right for a day at home, but I felt like it needed a topper. So I started playing around with pieces in my closet.  Here are three versions that I came up with.

Outfit #1

Long Cardigan + Plaid Shirt + Ponte Leggings + Riding Boots

This cozy long beige cardigan that I got for the Fall GYPO Style Challenge has been one of my favorite and most worn new additions to my closet.

Sizing Tip:  This cardigan runs big, order down a size.  I’m wearing an XS.

Style Tip:  Try cuffing the sleeves of your plaid shirt over the cardigan.  You could also dress this up by adding a pearl statement necklace.

Outfit #2

Fur Vest + Plaid Shirt + Ponte Leggings + Riding Boots

My husband can’t resist calling me a yeti every time I wear my fur vest, but that’s not going to stop me. Embrace the yeti! I got my vest two years ago so don’t have the link to this exact one but this faux fur vest is very similar.  You can usually have luck finding an inexpensive version at TJ Maxx.

These ponte leggings are the go-to pair in my closet.  They’re thick and feel more like pants than leggings to me which means extra coverage!

Style Tip:  If the fur vest makes you feel like a yeti, try a fur scarf instead. Fur and plaid were made for each other!

Outfit #3

Patagonia Jacket + Plaid Shirt + Ponte Leggings + Riding Boots

Here in Texas, my Patagonia Better Sweater gets a whole lot of wear.  It’s perfect for layering over lightweight pieces on warmer days or under a heavier coat when it’s really cold out.  It’s the casual jacket I wear most often.

Sizing Tip:  I’m wearing a size small in this Patagonia Better Sweater. It’s not very roomy so if you want to layer heavier pieces, I recommend sizing up.
