SAHMonday: Chambray, White Jeans and Colorful Sandals

SAHMonday: Chambray, White Jeans and Colorful Sandals

Welcome to another edition of SAHMonday – weekly outfit inspiration just for the stay at home and work from home moms of the world (like me!) who aren’t heading out of the house on Monday morning.  You can check out the other outfits in this series here.

These outfits are perfect for when you want to feel comfortable, yet put together, so that you can face the day and any errands you may need to run.  Plus, most of these outfit formulas can be pulled straight from your closet.  If you don’t have my exact pieces, that’s ok.  Just use one of the substitutions that I recommend.

Chambray Shirt, White Jeans and Colorful Sandals

So here’s an easy outfit I’m betting you can mostly pull from your closet!  It’s just right for those spring days that aren’t too hot or too cold.

Just pair up two basics – a denim shirt and white jeans (I just added this distressed frayed hem pair to my collection), then throw in some color and pattern to add interest like these pom pom sandals and a floral wrist scarf.

Denim Shirt + White Jeans + Colorful Sandals

Funny story about these new white jeans, when I sat down to take this picture, my husband said “Um, you have a hole in your jeans.”  I laughed and said “yep, that’s kind of the point!”  This is my first pair of distressed jeans and I really like them. They’re super soft and not see through!  If you decide to try them for yourself, order down a size, they run big.  Also they’re advertised as a cropped jean but I’m 5’4″ and they aren’t really cropped on me.

Alison’s Friday Favorites

Alison’s Friday Favorites

I wasn’t going to do a Friday Favorites this week.  As a matter of fact, I wasn’t sure that I was ever going to do one again.

Every week when I post my Friday Favorites, I get more unsubscribes from my newsletter list than any other type of post. We all know it’s not because I’m controversial (ha!) but when I do more “personal life” posts, inevitably I also get more unsubscribes.

I actually *think* I understand why, some women come to GYPO for the style tips and that’s it.  I get that, really, I do.  My feelings aren’t hurt, it’s not personal. If I went to NPR and didn’t get news, I’d be pretty disappointed too.

But the thing is, I didn’t start blogging just to share tips and advice.  I did it to connect.  After working from home for a few years, it was my way of forming relationships with the outside world and meeting women on the style journey with me.

This may sound silly and/or sappy but I’ve never viewed you as “an audience” or “followers”.  From day one of doing this in 2012, I’ve felt like you’re my friends.  And of course I want to share my personal life with my friends!

So even though I know it’s going to hurt my newsletter list, I’ve decided to continue these posts. Relationships are more important than numbers and I’d much rather have a smaller list of women who want to be here.

So for those of you who are still here (my friends), here’s a little slice of what’s been going down in my life lately.  🙂

Favorite #1 – My Niece’s Baby Shower

We’ve got so much exciting stuff happening in our family between now and the end of May – Aubrey’s cheer team is heading to a big competition in Florida, she’s going to her first prom and she’s graduating!  That still hasn’t fully sunk in.

But one of the things I’m most excited about is…I’m going to be a great aunt!

My niece Lauren and her husband are expecting their first baby – a little girl (AHHH!!!) at the end of May.  They are naming her Vivienne (Vivie for short) and we had the pleasure of showering the new little miss and her mama with gifts this past weekend at the Dallas Arboretum.

In this picture we have four generations of girls, including Vivie.  From left to right are my daughter Aubrey, Lauren (mama to be), my mom Carol (great-grandma), me, my sister Andrea (Lauren’s mom) and my daughter Ava.

Favorite #2 – This Week’s GNO’s

It was a hectic week full of activity and fun GNO’s!  On Tuesday night, I went to an event at Closet Revival in Plano, Texas where I gave women tips on how to build a spring capsule wardrobe.  We had an awesome turn out and it was so much fun watching the women shop and put together their outfits.  A few of the local Spring 2017 GYPO Style Challengers came out too.

Here I am with Tammy, one of this season’s challengers.  And yes, I’m wearing the same dress that I wore to the baby shower. When mama buys a new dress, she has to get her money’s worth!  P.S.  I’ll be posting the details on this dress on the blog next Wednesday in an Easter post but if you want it now, it’s on sale!

Favorite #4 – Must Have Shorts (April Fools!)

I went out looking for some new denim shorts (or “jorts” as my husband lovingly refers to them) earlier this week and instead found these bad boys.  They’re actually “hot pants” made by Levi’s and you’re not going to believe the price tag on them! Pre-orders are now being accepted so get on the list.  Remember, you heard about them here first!  No, actually don’t admit to that.  🙂

Favorite #5 – Scarf Collection Update

I apologize in advance if you’re sick of hearing about the GYPO Collection silk scarf line (because you’re going to keep hearing about it).  First off, I want to address that the price point is a bit above what some of you were hoping for, and I understand your disappointment.  So I wanted to explain a little bit behind the pricing decision because you know with me, everything is on the table for discussion.  🙂

First and foremost, I wanted a product that I could be proud to put the GYPO name on and in order to do that, there were some non-negotiables. The materials had to be high quality and I wanted them made here in the US.  I could’ve gone with cheap fabrics and had them mass produced in China at a great price, but I chose not to because there’s no way I would’ve felt good about that decision.  I also wanted something completely unique to the brand, so an artist was commissioned to create these one of a kind watercolor designs just for us.  As I’m sure you understand, these decisions factored into the pricing.

But the main reason I’m going to keep talking about them (and hoping you buy them) is this:  the more you buy, the more we can donate to Genesis Women’s Shelter to help women and children out of domestic violence situations.  I purposely kept our margins slim to make the scarves more affordable while still being able to donate to the shelter.  I sincerely hope you’ll consider purchasing this unique wearable art for a great cause.  You can shop the collection HERE.

Pretty Fix: The April List

Pretty Fix: The April List

Are you sick of striped shirts yet?  I hope not because I’ve got another look for you with one today – and striped tops with details like bell sleeves and peplum hems have turned out to be one of the must have trends for spring 2017.

Being on trend truly doesn’t get any easier than this!  Just upgrade your striped shirt collection.

This month’s Pretty Fix styles your newly updated striped top with a spring classic you probably already have in your closet – white jeans.  Add in some colorful, trendy accessories – like a floral neck scarf and some tassel earrings – then finish it off with a functional cross body bag and some fun yellow block heeled sandals.

If you’re new around here, the Pretty Fix is a monthly feature with five budget-friendly recommendations for staying on trend.  The idea for it was born out of frustration some of you have had with box styling services. The Pretty Fix allows you to shop for the pieces at your favorite stores so it’s budget and quality conscious.  Of course, I always recommend that you shop your closet first!

Here’s your April 2017 Pretty Fix.

Pretty Fix – April 2017

1. Beaded Tassel Earrings

This fun pair of beaded tassel earrings from the Sugarfix by Baublebar line are so on trend and so affordable at only $12.99! They come in six fun color combos.  Here are some other options:  1/2/3

2. Striped Bell Sleeve Top

Instantly update your t-shirt collection for spring by adding bell sleeves to your classic striped top.  Shopping options:  1/2/3/4

3. Floral Square Scarf

One of the easiest trends to try this spring is the silk floral neck scarf.   There’s nothing springier than combining stripes with florals.  Wear it on your neck, around your wrist or tie it to your purse handle.  Support a great cause by shopping the GYPO Collection or check out these other shopping options:  1/2/3

4. Neutral Cross Body Bag

Why not lighten up your load for spring with an easy to carry cross body bag! Light gray goes with everything. Here are some options:  1/2/3

5. Yellow Block Heeled Sandals

If you’ve sworn off heels because they’re uncomfortable then you really need to give block heeled sandals a try! This sunny yellow pair adds a punch of color to just about any outfit.  Additional options:  1/2/3  Tip:  Sub flat yellow sandals for a more casual version of this outfit!

And don’t forget the white jeans!  These are a closet staple but just in case you don’t have a pair yet, here are some of my favorite white jeans:  1/2/3

Striped Bell Sleeves and Colored Denim

Remember when I said I needed a striped shirt intervention?  Yeah, well I definitely have a problem because not even a day later, I acquired yet another one.  SMH…

As luck would have it, a striped bell sleeved top came in my Stitch Fix this month (I told you my stylist knows me really well) and of course I didn’t have the heart to send it back! I wrestled with it for a few hours but ultimately, the striped shirt won.

It’s my kryptonite. 🙂

And yes, I already had a striped top with bell sleeves.  So how did I justify this one?  It has wide stripes and a different neckline. It’s the little things!  Different topic but did you know that you can request specific items to be put into your Stitch Fix?  Maybe I’m behind the curve but I just found this out!  So if you want a striped bell sleeve top and colored denim, you just let your stylist know in the comments and they’ll do their best to include it.

Today I paired up my new striped bell sleeve top with a pair of coral jeans I’ve had for a few years.  It’s such an easy outfit for working from home.  Add in some comfy metallic flats and a dash of leopard and you’re good to go!

Alison’s Friday Favorites

Alison’s Friday Favorites

TGIF Pretties and welcome to another edition of Friday Favorites!  If you’re new around here, Alison’s Friday Favorites is a weekly list of anything that makes my life a little easier, prettier or happier.  Here are a few things that checked those boxes this week.

Favorite #1 – Horse Show

We got up at 4:30 am last Sunday to drive to our first horse show of the season.  This was also Ava’s first show on a new horse.  She is now my height (!) at 12 years old and has outgrown the pony that she rode for the past year so we’ve been on the hunt for a horse for a few months.  The horse she’s riding now is on trial and things have been going pretty well so far. Her trainer rode her in the pre-green division and they won champion!

I love watching her ride and seeing her passion for this sport, although to be totally honest, it also scares me.  A.  I’m afraid of horses, which makes things really interesting!  and B.  I have a minor heart attack every time she jumps.  Full disclosure – I didn’t watch any of her rounds this past weekend. When it was her turn, I walked away. All three of our kids have done sports that have made me nervous – football, gymnastics, competitive cheer and riding. I could rarely bring myself to watch our middle daughter on the balance beam in gymnastics either. That could be the reason why I’m now getting my gray roots covered every 4 weeks. Frankly we should’ve pushed them all a little harder for chess club.  🙂

But then you see this and it makes it all worth it, right?

Favorite #2 – Upcoming GNO’s

I’ve got not one, but TWO fun local Girls’ Night Out events coming up next week and would love to see you at one…or both! First up is at Closet Revival in Plano on Tuesday, April 4th from 6-8 pm. I’ll be on hand all evening to show you how to get a season’s worth of looks with just a few key pieces. Closet Revival will get you started on your new capsule wardrobe with a free spring scarf when you spend $25 or more. We’re giving away lots of goodies, just RSVP to our Facebook invite.

The second event will be Thursday, April 6th from 6:30-9:30 pm in Frisco at the monthly HeartStories GNO.  This month GYPO is the title sponsor so you can get your ticket for just $29 ($19 if you’re a first timer!)  I’ll be sharing spring style tips and you’ll be treated to an evening of connecting with new friends, wine and light bites plus this month’s guest Tonia Tomlin will be helping us get our lives organized with her tips.  You can learn more and sign up HERE.
