Does Your Season Change When Your Hair Color Changes?

Does Your Season Change When Your Hair Color Changes?

by Shannon Manion

The short answer to this question is no, but it’s more complicated than that. Before we get started answering the hair color question, you may be wondering what this season stuff is all about. Well, it is basically the theory that each person’s natural coloring fits into a season, which then determines what other colors will look best on them. When wearing colors that are harmonious with your natural coloring, you will shine and feel more confident. Your best colors can be found by completing a personal color analysis.  Once someone knows their season, the question then becomes, “Will my season change if I change my hair color?” Again the answer is no, but it’s not quite that simple.

Your season, and more importantly your sub-season, is made up of so many different elements to include: the value of your coloring (dark or light), your color quality (intense, bright, muted, toasted or shaded), your color temperature (warm, neutral, or cool), and even your personality. Hair color plays a role, but only as one element to assess your overall temperature. It plays a bigger role in how you wear your colors and that’s where it gets complicated.

First off, as long as you had an accurate analysis, your season never changes. You are a Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. What changes when you change your hair, is how you wear your colors and which colors within your season (or sub-season) are best for you. If your hair change is so drastic that the colors in your season no longer work for you, then you might want to consider whether that change was one you should have made. Just saying!

How Changing your Hair, Changes How you Wear Color

First Example: Okay, so let’s say that your change was fairly subtle. Believe it or not, it does still have an effect. I’m a prime example of this. For the past year, I’ve been struggling with what to do with my hair as I’ve become quite gray (like 85%). Should I embrace the gray or cover it up? While pondering this question, I was dying it myself. I chose a color that accurately matched my eyebrows. The problem was that it wasn’t very bright. After a friend of mine told me firmly that I needed to do something with my hair, I went to a hairdresser who brought me back to a bright blonde.

The interesting part is that during this year of hair struggles, I’ve also struggled with my clothing. The reason has to do with color contrast. When my hair became neutral (gray is neutral and so is the blonde color I was dying it), I became less of a color dominated person. This means that I could handle less color. As a formerly color dominant person (blue eyes, yellow hair, and pink skin), I was able to comfortably wear two or three colors at the same time. When my hair changed to neutral, and I put on foundation, I became one color and multiple colors no longer looked good on me. If that sounds a bit confusing, read this post on personal color harmony.

This fairly subtle change resulted in a change in my “best” casual neutral too. Casual neutrals tend to be a lighter neutral – a version of tan or gray. With my self-dyed neutral hair, my best casual neutral was a grayed taupe (right), but my brighter hair change resulted in my best being closer to beige (left). Having a custom fan, I was able to easily change out the swatch. Both swatches are from Spring color palettes, and the change isn’t huge, but it has resulted in which neutral blazer or cardigan works best on me and that does make a difference!

Second Example: Another way that hair color affects how you wear clothes is with value contrast. My beautiful jewel-toned Summer client used to have dark hair and light skin, so she looked amazing when wearing high contrast clothing. Think black and white together. She also could rock an all neutral look. Now that she is fully gray, she no longer has high contrast. She now needs medium colors mixed with dark or light. Her best color scheme is neutral plus a color. It was great to see her light up as she noticed the difference when we were doing her closet. She’d always been a fairly natural beauty and was thinking that she might need to start wearing more makeup. Once she started wearing color (and her specific colors) she didn’t need makeup, because she literally glowed!

By the way, your value contrast can also change with a tan. So, how you wear your colors in summer versus winter can change as you become more or less contrasted. Blondes tend to increase their contrast while brunettes decrease their contrast. Same as with hair, your season doesn’t change, but how you wear your colors will. Since value and color contrast are such an important part of feeling great in your colors, it is included in my custom color analysis services.

Your Turn! What are some of your struggles when it comes to color and hair?

Style Your Size: How to Wear a Casual Black Dress

Style Your Size: How to Wear a Casual Black Dress

By Jill Riley

As we move from summer to fall it’s good to take stock of the items in our closets that might transition well into this cooler season. Today’s Style Your Size post highlights the casual black dress. This is one piece that definitely deserves a spot in your fall wardrobe. There are so many ways to wear this closet staple. Choosing how to wear your black dress is the fun part!

To put this post together, we asked several Pretties of different sizes to show us how they wear their black dress.

The results are amazing as usual. From adding fun shoes to making it their own by spicing it up with special toppers, the Summer 2018 Style Challengers took the casual black dress to the next level.

Cathy wears a size 4. “The dress is actually regular size 4, not petite because I wanted more length.” What a great way to use clothing fit to get the look that’s right for her.

Tina wears a size 16. “Love how easy it is to dress up or down this outfit!”

Cindy wears a size 8. Slipping on a pair of bright pink sandals makes this outfit easy and adorable.

Sarah wears a size 6. “I did opt to use navy as my black for this challenge and it worked just right for me! This is a wonderful outfit formula, a dress is an instant outfit, just bring on some fun shoes & accessories! This dress is an absolute favorite for the summer, and it was under $15.00! I have worn this dress many different ways both casual & dressier.”

Maraline wears a size 18. You know it’s a closet staple when you can dress as twins with the littles in your life.

By adding a cardigan, kimono or jacket this dress becomes a great transition piece from summer to fall.

Liz wears a size 8. “This simple black dress was my favorite maternity piece. I could mix it with different pieces to dress it up for work or dress it down for dinner out with my husband. Every woman needs a simple black dress!”

Christina wears a size 12. “I added a cardigan that day because my office is cold! My dress is from Loft.”

Heather wears a size 18. “I loved this outfit with the pop of color for the shoes. I had added the white cardigan with this outfit to help with the ac in the office, but this was a great transition outfit for work to a night out.”

Danielle wears a size 2. “Dressed it up by adding a leopard clutch and striped heels. Added a jean jacket in case it would be cold in the restaurant”

How to Wear a Casual Black Dress: Try a Trend

Gabi wears a size 2. “I’ve learned so many fashion tips from my Style Sisters in the Facebook group including this clever one! If you don’t like rompers because they’re tricky to get into and out of, try a “fromper”, same coloured tee and shorts!” Gabi is referring to the Challenge Facebook Group that accompanies each Seasonal Style Challenge. Have you signed up for the Fall 2018 Capsule Wardrobe?

Melissa wears a size 24. “I finally found a plus size jump suit that worked for a petite plus body!” Some pieces are worth the time and effort it takes to find just the right fit.

Iris wears a size 4. “I styled it for the cooler weather that day, with the jumpsuit and cardi.”

Sarah wears a size 20. “My first jumpsuit ever, but it just felt too plain to me, so I added the denim vest!” Feeling comfortable in your clothes is the most important thing. Sarah figured out how to make this outfit feel right to her just by adding a little something.

Style Your Budget: Fall Throwback

Style Your Budget: Fall Throwback

It’s time for a throwback edition of Style Your Budget. If you’re new around here, Style Your Budget helps you shop smarter by showing you one outfit prompt styled at five drastically different price points.

One of the things that makes Style Challenges work so well is that we don’t provide you the clothes. That may sound like a bad thing at first, but we promise it isn’t. By providing you with a style prompt rather than a box of clothes, you get to decide what the outfit ultimately looks like (and how much it costs).

If you already own all the pieces in the prompt you can shop your closet for a free outfit. Woohoo! However, if you need to fill in a gap in your wardrobe you get to choose which store, and more importantly how much you are going to spend, to fill in that gap.

This outfit is the Day 12 outfit prompt from the Style Challenges Fall 2017 Capsule Wardrobe (told you this was a throwback!). This may be a look from last year but it’s a classic one that is totally wearable again and many of these pieces will be styled again (in some variation) in the Fall 2018 Capsule Wardrobe as well. If you are checking your closet for gaps these are great pieces to consider adding to your shopping list.

Soma Enbliss Bra Review

Soma Enbliss Bra Review

by Alison Lumbatis

I’ve made it no secret around here that I’m one of the pickiest women I know when it comes to bras. They can’t poke me, restrict me or even feel like they’re there or I’m just not going to wear them. That’s why I have a whole drawer full of bras but only have 3 that I rotate on a weekly basis and have bought in the same style and colors for years.

When Soma Intimates approached me about trying out their bras, I was more than a little hesitant. I even insisted upon going into the store to try them on first before agreeing to do a post. Such a diva, lol! But seriously, I’m pretty stuck in my ways when it comes to bras and it takes a lot to impress me.

When I got there, I talked to one of their kind bra fit experts and told her all of my reservations and list of requirements in a bra. She recommended that I try their Enbliss wireless bra. Even though I was a skeptic, I have to admit, this bra changed everything. It’s described as cloud soft, comfortable and supportive. Ladies, this is a bra you HAVE to feel. It checks all of my comfort boxes – including a few I didn’t even know I had.

It’s made of the softest material ever and all of the edges are smooth – no poking going on here.

It has this soft cover that provides extra support without constricting, which is hard to get with a wireless bra.

Needless to say, I have a new favorite bra added into the rotation – and it looks awesome under my daily uniform staple – the t-shirt!

I also picked up a pair of their Vanishing Edge panties while I was there. I’m usually a thong girl but like to mix things up with a bikini once in awhile. One main issue I have with bikini undies is visible panty lines. Soma found a way to do away with that with their patented silicon leg openings.

These nifty strips keep my panties in place without panty lines! They’re also tag free and super comfortable. They stay put but you can’t feel a thing. These panties come in 12 different colors and patterns.

Big thanks to Soma Intimates for sponsoring this post and making bras comfy enough for my picky standards!
