SAHMonday: Neck Scarf Two Ways

Welcome to another edition of SAHMonday – weekly outfit inspiration just for the stay at home and work from home moms of the world (like me!) who aren’t heading out of the house on Monday morning.  You can check out the other outfits in this series here.

These outfits are perfect for when you want to feel comfortable, yet put together, so that you can face the day and any errands you may need to run.  Plus, most of these outfit formulas can be pulled straight from your closet.  If you don’t have my exact pieces, that’s ok.  Just use one of the substitutions that I recommend.

The Controversy of the Neck Scarf

Spring trends have been a hot topic in my private GYPO Style Challenge Facebook group and on social media in general. One trend that keeps popping up and causing a ruckus is the neck scarf (aka square scarf).

It’s true, neck scarves are a big trend for spring 2017 but many of you have been through this trend a time or two (90’s for me) and aren’t so sure you want to go there again.

But the biggest question/concern I get is “how do I wear it without feeling like a flight attendant?”

I understand, I really do.

It’s kind of a tricky thing to pull off.  The key is making sure the rest of your outfit does NOT look like a flight attendant. Here’s how I’m wearing mine.

Blush Top + Neck Scarf + Skinny Jeans + Lace Up Flats

If that outfit doesn’t have you convinced to give the neck scarf a try, then here’s another option.  These little scarves are SUPER CUTE tied to the handle of a purse or tote bag.  It still adds interest and pattern to the outfit but it takes it off your neck.  I’ve even seen them tied around wrists and worn as hair accessories.

Cute, right?  And totally NOT flight attendant.  🙂

I like the scarf wrapped around the bag. It makes a cute little addition to the bag.

I totally agree with the “flight attendant” question, though. It always looks like I should be saying “the exits are here, here, and here”, but on the bag is great!

    • Alison @ Get Your Pretty On

Thanks Stephanie. I’m so glad you like it. It is a fun additional to your bag and you don’t have to point out the exits. 🙂

  2. Shaunacey

Love the neck scarf, just ordered one and hope I can pull it off!

  3. Shelley

That is so funny. I have that scarf and was wearing it the other day. I caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror and thought “Oh, no. Does that look like a flight attendant?” I had not thought about it before that. Even so, I think it is a super cute look. I think the size/shape/direction of the knot is important.

Did this trend in the 90’s AND the 70’s…and am happy to do again! Allows you to add that pop of color without the bulkiness of the scarves we’ve worn the past few years.

  5. sandy kimbrough

I love the neck scarf trend and look forward to incorporating some into my spring wardrobe. think they look fresh and young.

  6. Sarah Bell

Great idea tying it on a purse! Makes for a great little accessory to a neutral bag! Thanks for sharing at On Mondays We Link-Up 🙂

    Trendy & Tidy

  7. Savvy Southern Chic

I am obsessed with them right now, although my first attempt a few years ago looked exactly like a flight attendant- leopard scarf with ivory button up and black skirt. oh no! Now I’ll be wearing them with boatneck and vneck tops.

  8. Sarah @ Foxy's Domestic Side

haha, LOL to the flight attendant. I personally love the scarf around the bag look. That sweater looks great on you btw.

Weird question: but what is your lipstick color? I can’t find a pink that is nude & subtle enough.

    • Alison @ Get Your Pretty On

Hi Penny! It’s e.l.f. Jumbo Stick Lip Gloss in Pink Umbrellas. I got it at Target but I think you can find it at Walmart or any drugstore too. It’s the perfect pink!
