Happy New Year to all the Pretties out there!!! I don’t know about you, but I get very excited about a new year, it’s the ultimate fresh start. That’s why now is the time to set your intentions for the year so you can make the most of the new year.
I’ve worn many hats in my career but one of the most fulfilling has been as a professional life and business coach. Working with women to create lives where they feel passionate, focused and motivated is truly one of the most rewarding feelings ever. Although I don’t actively coach one-on-one anymore, I’m still very passionate about helping women figure out what they want and how to get it.
Today I’m introducing you to a concept from the challenge that I learned about several years ago that’s changed my life for the better in small, but significant ways. It’s all about eliminating tolerations from our lives.
What’s a toleration, you ask? It’s basically anything you’re putting up with that drains your energy.
Watch the video below to learn more about some of the things I was tolerating – from a lumpy pillow and dull razors to a dirty car and burnt-out lightbulbs. This video has a call to action for you to make your own list and start tackling tolerations. You’ll be amazed at how great it feels!
1. Identify Your Tolerations
First thing’s first, identify your tolerations and make a list. These are things that are maybe frustrating, bothersome or even annoying to you. For me last year it was a lumpy pillow. Otherwise a pretty quick fix but it’s crazy how much not getting a good night’s sleep affected me. I replaced it with a new pillow and immediately started sleeping better. That one change funneled into making my days that much better. Print out the TOLERATIONS WORKSHEET to help you get started on your list.
2. Tolerations are Not Longterm Goals
Tolerations aren’t longterm goals but things that can easily and pretty quickly be taken care of. They could take five minutes or maybe a few hours but they are things that will give you tangible results and doesn’t it feel great when you can check things off your list?
3. Take Your Time
After you’re done making your list take a look at it. You might be surprised to see that there are a few that you can immediately remedy and check off the list. Put a star next to the 2-4 items that you want to start with. You’ll be amazed at how great you’ll feel just getting those few things done. Next, you can set your goal. Do you want to tackle one toleration a day? Do you want to tackle a few a week? Whatever your goal, make sure it’s attainable and pick the items you want to accomplish that day or week. If you try to do it all at once you may get frustrated or discouraged. Spreading it out helps with that.
So what are you waiting for? Print off the PDF above to make a list of your own tolerations. See how many you can knock out this week and tell us about them in the comments!
Wishing you all our Pretties a very Happy New Year!
I don’t know about you but one of my favorite trends of summer 2019 as been soft shorts. It’s been nice to get away from strictly structured and denim shorts and have some options that are both comfy and stylish. This is one trend I’m hoping continues into next year and beyond.
Although summer is coming to an end, I’m still picking up a few new pieces. Living in Texas means my summer wardrobe is about twice the size of any other season. It’s always nice to have a few new pieces to pull out when the time comes to get everything back out of storage for next year. It feels like a little treasure hunt! This is also the time of the year when I start to get really tired of the pieces I’ve been wearing the past few months. Adding a few new inexpensive items gives me just the little bit of momentum to finish out the season!
This past week I picked up not one but two pairs of these super soft tie waist shorts from Walmart. These shorts come in two different color/pattern options and since it was too hard to decide, I went with both. It didn’t hurt that they’re only $15 per pair. They paired perfect with this cute white eyelet top (it comes in 4 colors). I’ve had the pleasure of working with Walmart the past few months on their We Dress America campaign and have found quite a few pieces that are now permanent fixtures in my wardrobe – including these ruffled taupe wedges, monogrammed straw clutch and pair of red tassel earrings.
These shorts also come in this cute striped pattern. I’m planning to pair them up with some bright tees and tanks!

How to care for suede and leather boots, especially during the winter months, is one of our most frequently asked questions at GYPO. Where do I start? What products do I use? I began researching this topic and the results were overwhelming! The process can vary from site to site and the products are vast. Then, add in the homemade remedies and I’m pretty sure my eye began to twitch a little. That’s when I decided to stop Googling and go straight to the source – a professional! I am lucky enough to have such a person right in my hometown. Mancuso’s Shoe Repair has been a staple in the City of Greensburg and I had the amazing opportunity to chat with the owner, Ron Mancuso.
As an eighth generation cobbler who’s been doing this since he was 10, Ron had a lot of fantastic information about how to care for boots. I learned many tips and tricks and but most of all I learned that taking care of my boots is really quite simple if you know what to use. “There are so many products on the market that you just don’t need. No reason to make it complicated. It’s really a pretty easy process,” Ron said.
Ron truly is a master of his craft and I was enthralled after taking a look at his shop and watching him work. People from all over as well as the locals send him their boots to clean, restore and fix. He recently purchased a machine from Italy that will restore your Uggs and make them look like new again. Check out the process here. He believes that the better the boot quality, the longer he can make them last, which means your investment piece has the potential to be around for many years to come. He’s even working on widening a pair of riding boots for a customer and he’s one of the few cobblers who can do this.
Here are a few before and afters from my visit. What a difference a little shine can make! And the right Ugg was cleaned using Ron’s new machine. I wish I would have gotten a picture of the right one before he cleaned it. It was sooo much worse than the left and now it looks brand new!
Products for Suede and Leather Boot Care
Okay, so I know you’re eager for me to get to the steps of boot care, but first here are the products Ron swears by and how to use them.
Please Note: Before using any products read the directions first and know the type of material you are working with. If you are unable to find a tag to know for sure, contact the manufacturer directly to ensure that you are using the right product for the right material.
Angelus Foam Tex is an amazing cleaner and versatile as it works on a variety of materials like leather, suede and canvas. It is very simple to use and requires no water. Simply pump the foam onto your boot and use a clean cloth, t-shirt, soft brush or sponge to rub clean.
Dyo Leather Balm Conditioner is perfect for keeping your leather goods looking new and the best part is that it works on every color, no need to color match here! Think of leather like your skin, you need to keep lotion on it to keep from drying out, this is the lotion for your leather. Wipe first with a clean towel or t-shirt, then using that same towel rub this balm into the leather until the leather has absorbed it and has a polished finish. Wipe off any excess. This step may only need to be repeated seasonally depending on how much you wear your boots and how quickly they dry out. Do not use this product on suede like materials.
Protecting your boots is the name of the game and no product does it better than Kelly’s Professional Grade Water Protector. According to Ron, this product is easy to use and hard to mess up and requires only two light coats for ultimate protection. Be sure to spray in a well-ventilated area and let the first coat fully dry before applying the second. Keep in mind this product may need to be reapplied throughout the season depending on how much your boots are exposed to the elements. If you can’t find this, other water repellant sprays such as Kiwi Rain and Stain Protector will work, just be sure to stay away from silicone as that protectant is mainly reserved for hunting boots and such and can be very hard to work with.
Leaving salt to sit on their boots is one of the biggest mistakes people can make. It will cause discoloration and eat away at the material. Salt should be removed from your boots as soon as you can and the best way to do this is by using products specifically for this. Ron suggests two different brands, Fiebing’s Salt Stain Remover or Angelus De-Salter. Both products are safe to use on suede and leather. They will safely remove the salt and salt stains without discoloration.
A brass brush is the way to go when cleaning suede. Gently brush the grain of the suede multiple times in one direction then switch directions to help remove dirt and stains. For a larger surface area, you can also use a larger stiff bristle brush like this one.
Simple Steps for Boot Care
Now to put these products to work. I’m going to focus on the most common boot materials, leather and suede (which is the same as nubuck). Did you know that you can also extend the life of your faux leather and suede goods the same way too? Below is our handy GYPO Boot Care Cheat Sheet to help lay out the steps to keeping your boots looking great!
Additional Tips From Ron
* Do Not Use Vinegar to clean your boots or to remove salt unless you are working with a black boot and you are okay with having to dye them after. Vinegar will remove the stain, but it will also remove all the color and color matching can be very hard unless you’re dealing with black.
* Do not try to remove ink, you will only make it worse. “In all my years of cleaning leather and suede, I have bought every single product on the market and tried every single method to remove ink from shoes and purses. It’s just not going to come out without damaging and discoloring the material.”
*Oil may come out but that is also something to leave to the professionals. Prevention is your best defense against oil and ink so be sure to spray a protectant on all your boots!
*Know when you can treat your boots at home and when it’s time to call in a professional. There are just certain methods and certain products the professionals have access too that go way above what you’re able to do at home. A quick search online will help you find a professional in your area. If you’re unable to find someone local, some cobblers like Ron accept orders through the mail. Click here for more information on Mancuso’s Shoe Repair.
* Water soaked boots – If your boots do become saturated with water stuff them with newspaper to help pull out the moisture. Continue to change out the newspaper as it becomes too wet. After your boots are dry follow up by conditioning and protecting them.
* Protect your purses too! – These tips do not just apply to your boots and shoes, but your purses, belts, totes, and anything made of these materials!
*Storing your boots – To store your boots at the end of the winter season, stuff with newspaper and store upright in a cloth bag, an old pillowcase will work too.
A special thank you to Ron and everyone at Mancuso’s for showing me just how long a great pair of boots can last with the proper home and professional care. With this knowledge, I now realize that owning a great pair of boots isn’t just a splurge, but a true investment in something I will be able to enjoy for years to come!
Your turn! Show us your before and after photos of your boots whether you did them at home or found a professional!
So I’m pretty sure I’m in denial. You see, in my mind, I still had a few more weeks until the kids get out of school to get things done, but in reality, I don’t. I have one week until their holiday break to get my act together so I can spend that time enjoying my kids being home. And one of my favorite things to do with the kids over the holiday break is to bake cookies! I love everything about this holiday adventure, the smells, the laughing and of course the cookies! So for this month’s Word of Mouth, I asked our GYPO team:
What is your favorite cookie recipe?
Suzannah – Linzer Cookies
I’m of German and Austrian descent, so in my house, we love Linzer Cookies! Linzner cookies consist of a delicious almond-based dough with preserves in the center and we can’t get enough of them!
Coty – Chocolate Chip Cookies
When I was a kid, my dad and I would bake chocolate chip cookies on the weekends (I blame him for my sweets addiction!). It was a classic recipe from the Joy of Cooking Cookbook, but it was easy to memorize. I still know the recipe by heart and now it’s my daughter’s favorite thing to do on the weekends! We sometimes like to add other ingredients, like: walnuts, coconut, toffee chips, and milk or white chocolate chunks. Yum!
Chocolate Chip Cookies – Joy of Cooking – Makes about 36 cookies
Preheat the oven to 375. Grease or line 2 cookie sheets.
Whisk together:
1 cup plus 2 Tbs all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
Beat in a large bowl until well-blended:
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
Add and beat until well combined:
1 large egg
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
Stir in the flour mixture until well-blended and smooth. Stir in 1 cup chocolate chips (I added an extra 1/2 cup).
Drop the dough by heaping teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart on the cookie sheets. Bake, 1 sheet at a time, until the cookies are just slightly colored on top and the edges are brown, about 8 – 10 minutes. Let stand briefly, then remove to a rack to cool.
Alison – Raspberry Almond Thumbprint Shortbread Cookies
My favorite Christmas cookies are these Rasberry Almond Thumbprint Shortbread Cookies because they remind me of my childhood. It’s impossible for me to smell almond extract without thinking of my Grandma Bussard’s house. Her neighbor Mrs. Miller made the most amazing Christmas cookies in every variety imaginable! Some of my favorites were her pinwheels and of course, her raspberry almond thumbprints. These cookies are so buttery, they melt in your mouth. I love the tart raspberry spread with the sweet shortbread cookie.
Jill – Chips and Salsa
So……I actually don’t eat sugar or flour so cookies are out for me. Cookies weren’t really my thing before anyways, I would have traded a chocolate chip for some chips and salsa any day.
Lauren – Ginger Molasses Cookies
I didn’t have to think twice on this – ginger molasses cookies are my favorite! This cookie has been my go-to cookie at Starbucks for years, it pairs perfectly with my soy vanilla latte. They actually discontinued the cookie for a while in 2015 and you better believe I sent them an email begging for its return. During that dark time when I couldn’t get my fix at Starbucks, I found an amazing dupe recipe from The Busy Baker that is just as good as the Starbucks version, maybe even better! They freeze beautifully too so you can always have one handy for your afternoon cup of coffee. You can thank me later. 😉
Kathryn – Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate chip, please! I’ve recently discovered a delicious cookie recipe from Sugar Spun Run that calls for mini and regular chocolate chips. I’m in chocolate heaven and unfortunately can’t get enough.
Peanut Butter Blossoms are one of my favorite cookies, but in our house, they are more affectionately referred to as Kissing Cookies. A recipe of my mother-in-law’s, these cookies are a staple in our home every holiday season and the kids have been helping me make them since they were tots. My oldest daughter who will be 10 in March, started calling them kissing cookies when she was three and now the kids don’t know them as anything else. Kissing cookies are the perfect ratio of chocolate to peanut butter and the texture is amazing! They pair wonderfully with an ice cold glass of milk, a cup of coffee or tea and even hot chocolate!
Peanut Butter Blossoms – (Kissing Cookies) – Makes 24 yummy cookies!
Preheat Oven to 375
Mix together
1/2 Cup Oleo (Margarine)
1/2 Cup Peanut Butter
1/2 Cup Sugar
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
Then mix in one at a time,
1 Egg
2 TBSP Milk
1 tsp Vanilla
1 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Salt
1 and 3/4 Cup All-Purpose Flour
Roll dough into balls about an inch in diameter and roll through a bowl of sugar and place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 8 min. Pull out of the oven, add a Hershey kiss to the middle of the cookie and return to oven for 30 seconds. Take out and allow to cool on a cooling rack.
Your turn! What holiday cookie recipes are your favorite? What cookies are you looking forward to enjoying this holiday season?
Hiya, pretty! It’s finally that time of year – we can open up our windows, put on our floral dresses, and dance around the streets in our flip-flops. But if you’ve felt hesitation to look at yourself in the mirror lately, dreading what your lackluster winter diet did to your arms, buttocks, and stomach, I have a plan for you! Spring doesn’t have to mean exposing flabby arms, summer doesn’t have to mean covering up the cellulite on your legs, and you shouldn’t need to suck in any belly fat. There are many beautiful ways you can support your body both now and year-round to keep those lean lines and make you feel your best in your monthly fixes.
As a functional nutrition practitioner, I coach women just like your pretty self to find the best foods that can nourish the body, be good to your digestion, and keep you lean and happy all year round. I’d like to offer several of my tips to you today! Let’s dig in.
1. Color, Color, Color!
Just like your wardrobe, your plate should be filled with vibrant, colorful foods. White foods like bread, rice, and sugar offer minimal nutritional value, are often the cause of bloating and skin rashes, and just don’t serve your body well! Instead, focus on dark leafy greens like kale, spinach and collard greens with every meal. Indulge in seasonal fruits like blueberries, peaches, and strawberries and enjoy colorful cruciferous veggies like purple cabbage and broccoli or broccolini. And as much as you can, enjoy organic produce as well as organic and pasture-raised meats (so long as you’re not a vegetarian). Grab my free recipe guide to see these foods in action!
The more whole foods you can eat, the better you’ll nourish your body, and when you eat naturally, you help to balance your metabolism naturally. Not only can good food choices help you to lose weight, they can also give you brighter, more glowing skin, a clearer mind, and more energy to enjoy the beautiful summer sunlight!
2. Follow the 80% Rule
Have you ever been guilty of eating until you’re painfully full? I am, and with the massive portion sizes we’re fed today, most of us are overeating. More calories in equals more weight on the scale — especially if it’s unhealthy calories. A rule of thumb I encourage all of my clients to follow is this: Eat until you’re 80% full.
Did you know that it can take up to 20 minutes for our brain to receive a signal from our stomach that we’re full? Scarfing down meals doesn’t give your body time to send that signal, so you may not actually realize when you’re full — until it’s a bit too late. So slow down, fill your plate a little less, and enjoy every bite! That brings us to my third tip…
3. Become Mindful of your Food
Mindful eating is a beautiful concept. It means becoming more in tune with your food and nourishing your body. This not only allows you to appreciate the flavors of all the colorful foods you’ll be eating, but also to slow down and not overeat.
The first step is to become present with your meal. You can do this by putting away electronics, taking a few deep breaths before sitting down, and smelling your food. These small rituals send a big signal to your digestive system that it’s time to eat, which helps to promote healthy digestion. Then, focus on chewing more and chewing slower. This may seem like simple tips, but you’d be surprised how often we don’t do this! Many of my clients, as healthy as they are, often realize they half-chew their food and by chewing more (about 30 chews per bite of food) they were able to better digest their food. Half-chewed food is much tougher for your digestive tract to process, which can cause food to sit stagnant in your belly, causing uncomfortable pain and bloating — and who wants to feel that way during bikini season?!
When you’re done eating, express gratitude. Feel grateful to be able to put food on your plate, to eat well, prioritize your health, and feel love for your body. These positive affirmations can go a long way towards boosting your health — the mind-body connection is real, ladies!
4. Drink Lemon Water with Apple Cider Vinegar Daily
This is my all-time favorite drink and I’m so excited to share it with you! I’m a huge fan of morning rituals and this is a good one for everyone to work in. Lemons are fantastic both for digestive health and detoxification, and apple cider vinegar (ACV) is great for digestion as well as metabolism, weight loss, and much more. Together, they’re a powerful combo.
Here’s how to make this drink:
Mix 1 Tbsp of ACV with the juice of 1 fresh squeezed lemon and mix in 8 oz of filtered water. Drink this every morning before eating breakfast.
This helps to stimulate your metabolism and digestion, as well as help your body to detox the toxins from the night (when our bodies go through the biggest detox process of the day). Many of my clients end up making this a part of their daily routine long after working with me because the benefits are so great and it really puts a pep in their step!
5. Get Curious About Your Metabolism
If weight doesn’t seem to budge no matter how well you eat or exercise, your metabolism and digestion may need a boost. There could be an underlying reason why the number on the scale won’t budge. Perhaps you’re low in enzymes that are necessary to digest food. This can lead to slower transit time and food sitting around in your stomach. If you go to the bathroom less frequently than you think you should, or feel a heaviness in your tummy, it could be a transit issue.
Or, perhaps there’s an infection going on that’s causing your system to go a little haywire, causing things like bloating, holding onto weight, cravings, and so on. If this is the case for you, you may want to look into running a functional lab test that looks at your digestion and metabolism with a practitioner like myself to then find out what you can to do rebalance your body.
Did you know that just a few nights of poor sleep can lead to faster aging of the skin, a decline in memory (hello, brain fog!), weight gain (eek!), and more? When we sleep, our bodies repair and rejuvenate themselves, so if we sleep less or sleep poorly, we lose the ability to do that, which can have widespread health effects.
So how can you boost sleep? First, check in with your mind. Is it racing before bed? If so, work in some relaxing nighttime activities like taking a bath, meditating, journaling, doing some yoga stretches, reading an enjoyable book, or another relaxing activity that will take your mind off of your worries. Then, check in on your environment. Do noises or lights wake you up frequently? If so, consider buying a white noise machine and a sleep mask to give your body absolute peace.
A few other rituals I like to practice are diffusing lavender essential oil near my bedside, taking magnesium before bed (this is very calming to the body) and drinking chamomile tea 1 hour before hitting the sack. Whichever tools work for you, make them a priority every night so you can improve your beauty sleep and wake up rejuvenated! Oh, and have patience — it may take a few days or a week to set into a routine and allow your body to adjust.
Live Your Best You This Spring and Summer
I am so excited for you to begin implementing these tips! They’re the ones I practice every day and encourage my clients to do as well. No matter where you are with your health today, doing one healthy thing for your body every day will do your body good. Over time, you’ll see a difference in your metabolism, weight management, appetite, mood, memory, and overall sense of wellbeing! Top that with an amazing outfit, and you’ll soon be unstoppable!

I’ve been participating in the GYPO Style Challenges for three years now and I’ve loved it. I’ve always loved clothes, but I didn’t know how to put outfits together. My closet is now full of mix-and-match outfits, I have learned how to dress myself, and there is no more stress in figuring out to wear. The private FB group is full of wonderful ladies that build each other up. It’s so fun and is seriously the best group on FB.

Get Your Pretty On has changed my life, seriously. I have always chased what is trendy but found from season to season, that things go out of style and I was wasting money on items that I would only end up wearing a few times. GYPO has enabled me to simplify my closet, helps me make smarter purchasing decisions, and I feel so put together and confident using the outfit formulas that are provided. This program is a GAME CHANGER. I've been following GYPO for a few years now and my only regret is not jumping on board sooner.
Michelle Kline November 20, 2019
Great community of ladies, helping each other look stylish, without breaking the bank, and using much of what you already own.
Chosen Faith November 19, 2019
GYPO challenges have been one of the best things I have done! It had taught me so much more than just creating a closet of clothes that I love but also to have confidence in myself, how to pick and choose colors that work for me instead of against, and had given a wonderful community of Pretties who are so special.
