Five Ways to Enhance Your Brows

Five Ways to Enhance Your Brows

By Jessica Pigza

With summer makeup on the minimal side, having a strong brow can make a big impact. Thicker, fuller brows have been on trend for a while now, leading to an explosion of temporary and semi-permanent solutions to enhance your brows. For some, they need only to tame what they already have, while others may need a little more help. Anyone remember the thin brow trends of the 90s? With so many products and procedures available, sometimes it’s hard to differentiate what exactly each one does. Below are five of the more notable methods plus a bonus.

As with anything that’s meant to last past your nightly face washing, take your time and make an educated decision when it comes to picking who will be enhancing your brows. Additionally, you should read reviews and look at pictures of their work. Furthermore, having pictures of how you’d like your brows to look is extremely helpful. Your eyebrow tech should spend a good deal of time talking to you about how you want your eyebrows to look. However, if they want to jump right in, that is a red flag to get out! Remember, everyone is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. Thankfully there are many options to choose from. Let’s get started!

1. Powders, Gels, and Serums oh my!

Probably one of the most common and lowest risk, ways to enhance your brows is to fill them in with an angled brush and powder or apply the colored gel or pomade with a brow wand or spoolie. There are also kits that provide you with a few different color choices allowing you to create a more dimensional, natural-looking brow. While these are only temporary solutions, they allow you the flexibility to try different fill methods and change the look of your brows daily.

Pros:

  • Totally temporary, meaning less risk if you mess up or don’t like the way they look
  • Very budget-friendly
  • You can change the look of your brows daily
  • Painfree, unless you accidentally poke yourself in the eye, Ouch!

Cons:

  • Because it’s totally temporary, you’ll have to reapply daily
  • It may take a while to master the perfect brow but remember, practice makes perfect

Another slightly more permanent solution is applying a growth serum to your existing eyebrows to boost their length and fullness. While this does create a natural look with little maintenance, you do have to apply it nightly to clean skin. Once desired fullness and length are achieved, then you can back down to once every other day. These products not only help promote eyebrow growth but also help stop brow hairs from falling out, leading to fuller-looking brows. The downside is that once you are no longer using the products, brows can look thinner from excess hair loss, but it is only temporary until your brow hair loss/growth cycle goes back to normal.

Pros:

  • No maintenance brows
  • Budget-friendly especially compared to semi-permanent application processes
  • Painfree

Cons:

  • Must be applied daily or every other day
  • Once you stop using it, you may experience even thinner brows, temporarily

2. Brow Lamination

Brow lamination is a pretty new process that creates a shiny, smooth-looking brow. This semi-permanent technique is also referred to as a ‘brow perm’ and does not use any type of needle to enhance your brows. The process uses the brows you already have, pulls them in a more verticle direction, and reshapes them to make them look their fullest. This process is perfect if you have long, unruly or curly eyebrows.

First, a lifting cream is applied then your brows are brushed up. Then, another neutralizing cream is applied to help keep the brow hairs in place. Lastly, moisturizing oil is applied to help keep the skin from peeling. To enhance this process, you can also add tinting, which is usually done at a second appointment as to not overexpose your eyebrows to too many chemicals. Just like a perm, you need to keep them dry for 24 hours after application then you’re good to go!

The upside is that this is a painless process requiring zero needles and works with the brow hairs you have. Downside, it only lasts for roughly six weeks as your brow hairs will naturally fall out depending on where they are in their lifecycle and grow back in their natural position. Also, there is the potential that the perming cream could lighten your brows requiring immediate tinting. This treatment is not recommended for someone with a skin condition or super sensitive skin.

Pros:

  • Painfree application process, cream could cause light tingling
  • Approx 30-60 min application time
  • Cost is relatively less at $50-$100 per session

Cons:

  • Only lasts 4-6 weeks
  • Could lighten your eyebrows
  • Could cause skin irritation, not recommended for sensitive skin
  • Brows may still need to be brushed back into place but won’t need filled daily

3. Ombré Powder Microshading

While this process is known by a few different names, powder fill, microshading, or stardust brows, but the technique to enhance your brows is still the same. Unlike microblading which using hair-like strokes, this process involves the application of thousands of tiny little dots tattooed onto the brow area to create a build-up of color. This process creates a more solid, graphic brow structure. Microshading has been around for many years. Previously though, it did not have the best reputation for creating a natural brow but recent improvements to this application technique boast a more natural brow with a lifespan of 1-3 years with a few touch-ups. What also makes this process stand out is that it’s perfect for those with oily or sensitive skin. This process can also be combined with Microblading for a more natural look.

Pros:

  • Good for oily or sensitive skin
  • Lasts 1-3 years with touchups
  • Not too painful as dots are applied instead of blades being pulled across your skin
  • Can be combined with Microblading or Nanoblading for a more natural look

Cons:

  • Expensive, prices can range from $300-$1000 depending on where you live and tech’s experience level
  • The solid, bold look this technique offers is not for everyone

4. Microblading

Microblading uses a small, sharp instrument that consists of 10 to 16 fine needles configured into a blade shape to draw hair-like ‘tattoos’ onto your brow area. Unlike a tattoo though, microblading does not last forever. The results will last up to three years with touch-ups required every 12 months. In addition, the whole microblading process takes place over two sessions scheduled 4-6 weeks apart. Lastly, before you’re able to see the final product, there’s a healing process you must go through first, it usually takes about a few weeks. While the process isn’t considered painful, the scratching sound made by the application tool can be considered annoying so bringing a pair of earbuds and your favorite playlist may help. To read even more about this process check out Alison’s Microblading experience HERE and how she felt about it a year later HERE.

Pros:

  • Creates a very natural-looking brow mimicking hair-like lines
  • Works on all skin tones
  • Can create fuller-looking brows even if there’s not much to start with
  • Once initial healing care is done, virtually maintenance-free
  • Lasts up to three years with yearly touchups

Cons:

  • More on the expensive side ranging from $500 – $2000
  • Hearing the scratching of the application process can be annoying
  • Lots of aftercare and it can take weeks for brows to fully heal
  • It takes two sessions

5. Nanoblading

Nanoblading is a new brow treatment that uses an ultra-sharp nanoneedle that mimics the diameter and dimension of real hair on the skin to enhance your brows. It’s like microblading, only using a single ultra-fine and more flexible needle to create an even more natural-looking brow. This semi-permanent treatment won’t last forever, however, it does boast around a three-year lifespan requiring only a yearly touchup. The process of nanoblading typically consists of three visits, a consultation in which a test patch is done to ensure you aren’t allergic to the dye then two separate application appointments usually scheduled 4-8 weeks apart. After your first application appointment, you’ll still have great-looking brows you won’t mind showing off, the second appointment just helps to fill them out even more.

Pros:

  • Causes less trauma to the skin vs. microblading
  • Lasts up to three years
  • Good for oily and textured skin
  • Very natural looking
  • Able to be more precise with hair-like application
  • Perfect for people with naturally thin eyebrow hairs

Cons:

  • Long application time, between 3-4 hours
  • Expensive, because it’s so labor-intensive it can cost between $500 and up to $2000 depending on where you live
  • Consists of 2-3 appointments to complete the process

Bonus: Henna Tinted Brows

A natural alternative to enhance your brows is henna-tinted brows. Henna is a natural, plant-based dye. During the henna application process not only are your eyebrows tinted but so is the skin underneath, creating a powder fill look. Contrary to henna tattoo application, the henna used for your eyebrows comes in a variety of colors and will not turn your brows orange or oxidize over time. Furthermore, the process is fairly quick with a session lasting about 30 minutes. In some cases, the brow is outlined using barrier cream. A henna dye is then applied and lines are cleaned up with a q-tip. The dye will sit for 10-20 minutes, and once removed, the tech will finish shaping your brow. Not all henna application products are created equal, so again, look at before and after photos and find the color that works the best with your brows.

Pros:

  • Henna is a natural, plant-based product
  • Won’t dry out your brows
  • Application session is approx 30 min
  • If you’re feeling confident in your abilities, there are DIY henna kits available
  • Henna brows can encourage hair to grow back fuller
  • Great at tinting all hair colors even gray
  • Not horribly expensive with cost ranging from $35 – $125
  • Painless

Cons:

  • Tint only lasts 6-8 weeks
  • Lasts even less time on oily skin

What Are You Tolerating? 28 Days to a Better you!

What Are You Tolerating? 28 Days to a Better you!

During the course of my career, I’ve been lucky enough to do many things but if you are familiar with me and GYPO, one of the most fulfilling things I’m able to do is genuinely make a difference in someone’s life. To lift them up, to help them find confidence, and to live their ‘prettiest’ life. And when I say your prettiest life, this can mean anything from more quality time with loved ones to wearing an outfit that makes you feel like a million bucks to traveling someplace on your bucket list (when you’re able to). It basically means anything that makes YOUR life more beautiful and brings more joy to your days.

That’s why I created a life coaching challenge for the GYPO community called Rediscover Me. It’s a 28 day challenge created from feedback collected from my private coaching clients on the most beneficial coaching exercises and techniques. I took their responses and broke them down into bite-sized daily chunks. When Rediscover Me first launched, it was a paid program but I quickly realized that I wanted it to be something available to everyone and cost shouldn’t be a factor. So for the past few years the Rediscover Me challenge has launched live every February for the GYPO community absolutely free. All you have to do is join HERE to get in on it.

With everything going on I think learning how to live your prettiest life is even more important. It’s about doing things that make you feel good and eliminating what doesn’t which leads to me to just part of what we cover in Rediscover Me, tackling tolerations. So just what is a toleration? It’s basically anything you’re putting up with that drains your energy. Here are some steps to help you with your tolerations.

1. IDENTIFY YOUR TOLERATIONS

First thing’s first, identify your tolerations and make a list. These are things that are maybe frustrating, bothersome or even annoying to you. For me, it was a lumpy pillow. Otherwise a pretty quick fix but it’s crazy how much not getting a good night’s sleep affected me. I replaced it with a new pillow and immediately started sleeping better. That one change funneled into making my days that much better. Print out the TOLERATIONS WORKSHEET to help you get started on your list.

2. TOLERATIONS ARE NOT LONGTERM GOALS

Tolerations aren’t longterm goals but things that can easily and pretty quickly be taken care of. They could take five minutes or maybe a few hours but they are things that will give you tangible results and doesn’t it feel great when you can check things off your list?

3. TAKE YOUR TIME

After you’re done making your list take a look at it. You might be surprised to see that there are a few that you can immediately remedy and check off the list. Put a star next to the 2-4 items that you want to start with. You’ll be amazed at how great you’ll feel just getting those few things done. Next, you can set your goal. Do you want to tackle one toleration a day? Do you want to tackle a few a week? Whatever your goal, make sure it’s attainable and pick the items you want to accomplish that day or week. If you try to do it all at once you may get frustrated or discouraged. Spreading it out helps with that.

What Else Can I EXPECT IN THE REDISCOVER ME 28 DAY CHALLENGE?

  • A step-by-step guide to gain satisfaction, confidence and clarity in key areas including goal setting, self care, appearance, health, wellness, personal growth and relationships.
  • Daily videos and exercises to inspire you to dig deep and create lasting, positive change.
  • Printable PDF’s and journaling exercises based upon my most effective life coaching techniques for women.
  • Weekly accountability and focus forms that you can continue to use even after the challenge ends.
  • Group support and accountability in our Rediscover Me community.

THIS CHALLENGE MIGHT BE FOR YOU IF:

  • You’re ever felt like somewhere along the way you’ve gotten so busy “doing life” that you’ve lost yourself.
  • You’ve spent so much time taking care of everyone else that you’ve forgotten to take care of yourself.
  • You have a vague sense that you’re out of touch with who you really are and what matters to you but have no idea where to start.
  • You’re ready to have rock solid confidence and a sense of who you really are.
  • You’re stuck in a rut and not sure how to get out of it.
  • You’re wanting to rediscover a sense of your identity outside of your typical roles of mom or wife.
  • You’re an empty nester ready to reinvent yourself. You may have a vague sense of what’s next but aren’t really sure.
  • You’re an at-home mom who feels so caught up in your day to day taking care of the family that you’ve forgotten what matters to you.
  • Most importantly, you’re ready to dig deep and DO THE WORK. This course is called a challenge for a reason. It’s intensive and life changing.

THE FOUR WEEK PROGRAM FOCUSES ON THESE AREAS:

WEEK ONE – DEFINING WHAT MATTERS

Goal setting in the areas of self-care and appearance, healthy living and wellness and personal growth and relationships.  Eliminating tolerations.

WEEK TWO – SELF CARE/APPEARANCE

Self-care maintenance schedule, getting rid of what doesn’t fit or flatter, learning to affirm yourself, putting your best face forward, upgrading to a first-class life, and more.

WEEK THREE – HEALTHY LIVING/WELLNESS

WEEK FOUR – RELATIONSHIPS/PERSONAL GROWTH

Each week also includes one implementation day plus a worksheet to set your intentions for the week ahead. There’s also a private Facebook group where I post a daily video and have discussions on the topic. This is also a great place for accountability and support for your goals!

Rediscover Me kicks off on February 1st. Be sure to sign up for free HERE and I’ll see you in the Facebook group!

Five Fall Accessories Worth a Try

Five Fall Accessories Worth a Try

In keeping with the trend of making the most of shopping our closets, adding versatile pieces, and shopping on a budget, what better way to enhance our fall wardrobe without breaking the bank than to add in a few fun accessories! Normally in the spring and summer, we start to shed our layers as the temperature rises but when fall comes around, I get excited to start adding the layers back on. I love layering in light fall jackets, scarves, and great accessories. Also much like summer, the trends aren’t anything totally earth shattering but instead include some returning classics. Although these classics never really went away they haven’t been as prevalent for a few seasons. What does that mean for you? Most of these classic trend pieces may already be in your closet. Below are five of my favorite fall accessory trends!

1. Long Necklaces

Alison + Aubrey Noelle Crystal Teardrop Pendant Necklace

Long necklaces seemed like they went away for a season or two but now they are back and they are the perfect fall accessory. A long necklace is a great additional layer when wearing a scarf and it can easily add extra interest to any solid color top. Whether you choose something metal or even something with a pop of color, you can’t go wrong adding a long necklace to your accessory collection this fall.

2. Blanket Scarves/Cape Scarves

J.Crew Factory Plaid Cape-Scarf

There’s a lot of mixed feelings about the blanket scarf and sometimes even scarves in general. Sometimes it can feel like they are swallowing you up and if you live in a warmer climate forget about wanting all that material around your neck. That’s why I love that I’m also seeing cape scarves everywhere. Even though they are also big in size, they aren’t meant to go solely around your neck. They are also the perfect topper in the fall, pair amazingly with leggings and add a great pop of color or fun print to your look. They also work great for ‘column dressing’ which is where you wear the same solid color on top and bottom and then add in a fun layer. (For more examples of column dressing check out my previous Coffee Chat HERE.) The scarf pictured above is from Alison + Aubrey but unfortunately, it’s no longer available however this one from J.Crew Factory is pretty close.

3. Statement Earrings

Target SUGARFIX by BaubleBar Resin Hoop Earrings with Gold Stud

Statement earrings are also making a comeback this fall! I’m seeing them in so many fun colors and textures. They are a super easy way to add extra interest to your outfit especially if you live somewhere where it’s still pretty warm and you don’t want to wear a scarf.

4. Croc Embossed Print

H&M Croc Embossed Gray Handbag

Crocodile embossed print seems to be super popular this fall and I’m seeing it on some great accessories including belts, handbags, and shoes. If you’re not a fan of the snake print but you still want some texture, this is a great alternative and it comes in an array of colors.

5. Chunky Chains

Loft Chunky Chain Necklace

Chains and oversized chain links were around for the spring in their light acrylic designs and pastel colors. For the fall however, they are taking a slightly ‘heavier’ approach with metal finishes and layered looks. And if now after reading this you’re immediately thinking of Mr. T (because you actually know who that is) don’t. What I’m thinking of is a little lighter and doesn’t require you to work on your neck and back muscles to hold it up. The chunkier chains can be found in necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and even belts which is a great light weight option to pair to your favorite tunic to add some structure.

Your turn! What fun accessories have caught your eye this fall?

Ways to Wear It – White Shorts

Ways to Wear It – White Shorts

This month I am featuring white shorts in an all-new Ways to Wear It. Let’s talk about white shorts for a minute. They’re kind of scary, right? This is a piece of feedback that I get most often from the Get Your Pretty On Pretties. A lot of times we have this preconceived notion that we don’t like white jeans or shorts without ever trying them on. They can push us way outside of our comfort zones yet once we find the perfect pair, they can quickly become one of our favorite closet staples. Trust me when I tell you that there is a pair of white shorts out there for everyone. But if you’re just not into shorts, I totally get it. The great thing about these outfit formulas is that you can swap out the shorts for a pair of white denim pants, crops or even a wide leg. Dress these looks up with heels or wedges or dress them down with flip flops. Make these looks your own and have fun with them! Plus all of these looks are part of the Outfit Formulas™ Summer 2020 Wardrobe Capsule!

Option #1

Kimono + White Tee + White Bottoms + Neutral Shoes

This first look is a simple white V-neck linen tee paired up with my white shorts and then topped with a lightweight kimono. Kimonos are amazing for the summer months! They are an easy way to add tons of visual interest to any outfit without adding heat which is crucial for Texas summers. You could pair this up with just the white on white if you’re feeling brave or you can add any color kimono on top. I paired this up with my flat Tory Burch sandals, but you can also make this a bit dressier by adding in a pair of neutral wedges, which would make it totally ready for date night.

Option #2

Blue/White Top + White Bottoms + Bright Shoes

This one is super simple. I bought this blue and white stripes flutter sleeve top at Old Navy this past spring and it’s a perfect piece to take me into the summer months too! I paired that up with my white shorts and added some red flat sandals to give it a pop of color. For some extra fun, I also added some multicolored beaded earrings which help add some additional interest to this outfit.

Option #3

Black Top + White Bottoms + Leopard Shoes

For this look, we’re going to take things up a notch for a slightly dressier outfit by adding a black sleeveless blouse with the white shorts. This time I’m pairing them with my leopard wedges, which are fun and again, this is a great date night look if you want to do something a little bit dressier. I also added in my tortoise resin earrings to give it a little bit of extra pizzazz. If you don’t want to do the wedges or if you want to do this for every day, you could swap it out for a black T-shirt and then definitely add some leopard flats.

Option #4

Gray Tee + White Bottoms + Snake Print Shoes

I’m back to casual for outfit number four. I paired up my white shorts with my favorite gray V-neck t-shirt. I don’t know why, but this has always been one of my favorite outfit formulas for summer. This time I paired it up with some snake print flat sandals, which snake print is totally on-trend again for summer 2020. I finished this look off with my hat for a little bit of fun.

Option #5

Bright Top + White Bottoms + Leopard Shoes

Last but not least I’m pairing up my white shorts with a bright tie hem t-shirt. Tie hems are another great way to add detail and interest to an outfit without adding heat. If you have to skip your top layers in the summer, sometimes your outfits can feel a little bit boring. You can easily fix this by looking for tops with cute little details like this. I promise you can still add plenty of interest in the summer. I also put on my leopard flat sandals and I am wearing my beaded hoop hearings again just to give it that little extra something.

Which one was your favorite? Tell me in the comments and if you have a way to pair them up that you’d like to share with us, then let me know!

Struggling to Navigate? I’m There, Too. Here’s What’s Helping!

Struggling to Navigate? I’m There, Too. Here’s What’s Helping!

Hi Pretties! How are you holding up? To be honest, I am struggling to navigate the waters of what’s going on in our world right now and I’m really not sure what the best way is to address it. But what I do know is that we are all in this together, whatever challenge you’re facing. Maybe you’re dealing with a totally new routine or having kids around for the first time while also trying to work from home for the first time. Maybe you’re isolated, feeling down or scared or maybe it’s all of the above, whatever your struggle is, it’s so important for us right now to come together through these challenges and to navigate the waters together. That’s why I wanted to share as some of the things that have helped me during this weird life transition. For more details, check out my Coffee Chat below.

Most of you may already know that my platform started from a dark place for me. I was going through a big shift in my routine. I was able to work from home for the first time which had been something I prayed about for many, many years and finally came to fruition. But I now had to learn how to establish a new routine and how to keep hours when someone else wasn’t keeping me accountable for that. I lost my accountability and things quickly snowballed out of control for me after that. I think that that’s the position that a lot of you are finding yourselves in right now. It can make you feel like things are spiraling out of control and having a sense of control and normalcy is so important to our mental and emotional health. Keeping our routines in place or even just sitting down and creating a new routine is something that’s going to be crucial to getting through these days and weeks ahead of us. We don’t know how long this is going to last. That’s a big part of this, uncertainty, how long is this going to go on? None of us know that. All we can control is what we have going on today.

Make A Schedule

The first thing that really helped me whenever I was in this place was to pull out a piece of paper and a calendar and make a schedule. I did an hourly schedule and I still do this today. This is the way I plan out my weeks. The hourly schedule allows me to really prioritize all the things that I need to do for my mental health as well as the things that I need to get done for the day. So if you haven’t done that yet and you’re in a new routine, then pull out your calendar today and go ahead and make up a schedule and do it for the next week.

Get Dressed

While you are making your schedule, make sure you allow time to get yourself dressed and ready for the day. This will make a huge difference in your day! Just having that routine of getting dressed, putting on your makeup and fixing your hair. It’s not shallow. There’s absolutely nothing vain about wanting to feel good about how you look. At first you’re going to fall into the same temptation that I did a few years back where it’s like, oh my gosh, I get to wear my yoga pants all day and stay in my sweats all day. But in the long run, that’s not serving your mental health very well. I want you to try an experiment today. If you have been stuck in that rut and you haven’t been getting ready on a daily basis, then try it today and see how much better it feels.

Look For The Good

Right now we are all experiencing a total and complete shift in what your routine used to be into something completely new and different, and not for good reasons. But I will say that even during these times it’s important to try and look for the good things that are around us and the opportunities that may come from this. It’s great to see communities coming together, to see companies step up and help their employees, to see people pull their resources to help others during this time of crisis. The way our very own GYPO community has been supporting each other is amazing! I’ve always believed that God can work anything for our good and I’m definitely seeing that even in this situation. For our family, Craig and Ava now have a routine of playing basketball together in the evenings and I’m enjoying having my whole family under one roof. We are getting a chance to create memories and I’m choosing to see the good in that. What good are you seeing today?

Shifting Gears

As a blogger and business owner, I’m not really sure how to navigate things right now especially in the world of business. So as many of us are shifting gears, at GYPO, we are also shifting gears. We’ve put a hold on any type of sales or promotional stuff that we have going on because I think it’s more important right now for us to come together as a community and to do the things that are going to help each other navigate this.

One of the other things that we’re doing is we’re going to be pumping out tons of free resources to you over the next week or two. One of those things you can download right now is Five Spring Outfit Formulas. This is a free download and most of these are things you can probably shop your closet for. There are a few trends on there, but you can definitely shop your closet for a lot of the stuff. I also have my 21 Days of Leggings Guide. If you spend the day in leggings, then be comfortable, look cute. That’s totally my mantra.

We’re also going to be releasing some other things that were previously paid content to our older programs, but we’re going to be offering those for free to help make it easy for you to get dressed every day because I promise you this is gonna make a huge difference in your day and how you feel. If you’re not already signed up for the GYPO newletter you can sign up here and be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram so you don’t miss anything. And although I have talked for many years about my aversion to social media, I have to say that it has been one of my saving graces, especially during our quarantine. I’m definitely enjoying it so much more now and seeing our community come together and support each other. It has just been such an incredibly huge blessing. I appreciate all of you guys so very, very much and this community means the world to me. We have gone through valleys before and I promise, we will get through to the other side.
