Yes You Can Wear Denim With Denim

Yes You Can Wear Denim With Denim

By Jill Riley

As I’m writing this post for the Yes You Can Wear It Series, I’m actually wearing the outfit I’m writing about. It’s one of my favorites. I wear it as often as I can get away with (which works out to be about once a week).

One of the great things about joining in the Get Your Pretty On Style Challenges is learning about style in easy to follow steps.

I learned how to wear denim with denim when I joined my first Get Your Pretty On Style Challenge (back before becoming a team member). I was using the SAHM Casual Wardrobe Builder  as my first style challenge. It’s the little tips included with each outfit suggestion that have helped me feel like I actually understand style… without much effort on my end.

Today’s outfit combination is the Day Four Outfit of the Day from the Fall 2018 Capsule Wardrobe.

How to Wear Denim With Denim When You Already Love it

Jennifer says: Before, “I wasn’t overly concerned with it. Denim on denim done right is very chic and classic.” Now, “I love it even more now than I did before! Day 4 was one of my favorite outfits so far and I received many compliments on it at work, home and within the community. I think like any other outfit combination, how you style (or don’t style) an outfit will make it or break it. If you’re not sure about it keep playing with and eventually, you will get to what you like.”

Jenna says: Before, “Worn it before and loved it.” Now, “Like it even more!.”

How to Wear Denim with Denim When You’re Stuck on the “Rules”

Jamie says: Before, “I remember the Britney and Justin denim on denim look and didn’t want any part of that. I was also concerned it was a country music look which is really not my vibe.” Now, “I can see there are ways to wear denim on denim in a way that felt like me, but that also stretched my comfort zone. It felt surprisingly put together.”

Dawn says: Before, “I always thought denim with denim was a big fashion no-no.” Now, “There’s clearly a method and I’ve learned that mixing up different washes of denim, this is an option that really does work.”

Sara says: Before, “As a Canadian, I avoided the “tuxedo” look, especially when only rodeo folks are the ones wearing it around here.” Now, “It absolutely can be done in a classy, not cliche way.”

Sam says: Before, “I thought it’s was too much of a good thing.” Now, “Day four outfit so far is my absolute favorite! I felt pretty, put together and ready to conquer anything. This is certainly an outfit that will be on repeat!”

Robin says: Before, “It was not a combination that I ever would have attempted on my own. I did not think that denim with denim was “allowed”.” Now, “I’m warming up to the idea.”

Joyce says: Before, “I was nervous about it. I was afraid of looking like I was wearing a Canadian Tuxedo.” Now, “After seeing my selfie and the other Pretties, I feel much more confident in it, and will wear it again.”

GYPO Note: Joyce is referring to the Private Facebook Group that comes with each Seasonal Challenge. In this community, women are helping each other stretch out of their comfort zone, learn tricks for making these outfits their own and sharing their own take on each Outfit of the Day.

Cindi says: Before, “I always thought it was a big fashion no-no and never even attempted to pair denim with denim before the Fall 2018 challenge.” Now, “Love it! Denim is such a great neutral and with the right washes and completer pieces looks amazing paired together. I received so many compliments on my outfit the first time I paired denim with denim.”

Yes, You Can Wear Leopard Print Accessories

Yes, You Can Wear Leopard Print Accessories

By Jill Riley

Leopard print accessories tend to be a hard piece for women to try, but once they do a love of leopard is inevitable.

Here at Get Your Pretty On, stepping out of your comfort zone is made easy with a little guidance and support. That is obvious in the stories of these beautiful women.

I reached out to our Style Challenge Members and asked how their relationship with leopard print has changed since joining the Get Your Pretty On community.

More than in any of the other posts in the Yes You Can Wear series, I love the variety of ‘before’ concerns shared by our Pretties. Enjoy the pictures, but please read the stories as well. Do any of them hit home for you?

I think Jennifer, a Get Your Pretty On Pretty, says it best. “Doing the GYPO challenges has taught me many things and one is how to incorporate something I felt was not my jam into my personal style. Essentially I can wear leopard now and still feel like I’m being true to who I am.”

You will find Alison scattered throughout these pictures. Her love of leopard print goes way back.

Danielle appears multiple times in these pictures as well, showing that she has really embraced leopard print accessories. She says: Before, “I thought it would have been too much for the workplace or I would feel like the crazy cat lady.” Now, “I love it! It’s a great neutral pattern that can be added to almost any outfit to make it look complete or trendy.”

Lisa says: Before, “I thought I was too old and too plus-sized to wear leopard. I also tended to lean toward more understated classic styles.” Now, “I LOVE IT! For me, less is more. I feel that my leopard accessories give just the right amount of pop to make me feel stylish and good about myself!”

Deanna says: Before, “I was concerned people would think I was trying to be too showy.” Now, “I love it! It is definitely a staple in my closet! Once I started wearing a little bit of leopard, I started branching out and now I have leopard pants, leopard sweater, leopard shirt, heels, flats, purses, jewelry, belt. It’s like it’s contagious!”

Jessica says: Before, “I never thought I could do leopard. Even when was told they were a neutral. I felt like they looked better on everyone else, but would never look good on me. I would always admire everyone’s picks and wish it was me.” Now, “Once I found the PERFECT pair for me and my style, I was hooked. They are easily my favorite pair of shoes and I wear them whenever I can!”

Sam says: Before, “I thought leopard prints made me look like I was trying too hard to fit in.” Now, “I see leopard as a neutral that gives a POP to every outfit. Now I have belts, scarves, shoes, booties, and maybe I might need ‘just one more thing’.”

Susan says: Before, “I’ve always loved animal prints & wore them occasionally.” Now, “After joining GYPO I felt more confident in my choices & now wear it frequently! My personality has been enhanced with my leopard pieces! I will never look back!”

Jennifer says: Before, “I always felt like it was too stuffy or ritzy for me. I am a pretty casual kind of a girl for the most part and felt like it was too Saks for my personal style.” Now, “This was one of my favorite fall outfits ever!! Seriously! And I feel like the leapord shoes just made the whole outfit. I am excited to pull them out again this year. I never would have guessed that I would feel that way about leapord before purchasing these shoes!”

Sherri says: Before, “I’m too old, I’ll look silly!” Now, “Love it. Feel so put together with a pop of leopard. It just helps an outfit feel complete. Leopard print is empowering. I kind of have an obsession with Leopard! It’s so versatile and Alison always said, it’s a neutral! I just have one rule… only 1 leopard piece at a time.”

This one is worth repeating. Sherri says: “Leopard print is empowering.”

Rachel says: Before, “I have always loved leopard print, but I was hesitant to wear it on an everyday basis. I would save it for special occasions.” Now, “Now I know it’s ok to wear leopard as a “neutral” and I do often!”

Christina says: Before, “Too trendy for me.” Now, “It’s a great neutral!”

Style Your Size: How to Wear a Casual Black Dress

Style Your Size: How to Wear a Casual Black Dress

By Jill Riley

As we move from summer to fall it’s good to take stock of the items in our closets that might transition well into this cooler season. Today’s Style Your Size post highlights the casual black dress. This is one piece that definitely deserves a spot in your fall wardrobe. There are so many ways to wear this closet staple. Choosing how to wear your black dress is the fun part!

To put this post together, we asked several Pretties of different sizes to show us how they wear their black dress.

The results are amazing as usual. From adding fun shoes to making it their own by spicing it up with special toppers, the Summer 2018 Style Challengers took the casual black dress to the next level.

Cathy wears a size 4. “The dress is actually regular size 4, not petite because I wanted more length.” What a great way to use clothing fit to get the look that’s right for her.

Tina wears a size 16. “Love how easy it is to dress up or down this outfit!”

Cindy wears a size 8. Slipping on a pair of bright pink sandals makes this outfit easy and adorable.

Sarah wears a size 6. “I did opt to use navy as my black for this challenge and it worked just right for me! This is a wonderful outfit formula, a dress is an instant outfit, just bring on some fun shoes & accessories! This dress is an absolute favorite for the summer, and it was under $15.00! I have worn this dress many different ways both casual & dressier.”

Maraline wears a size 18. You know it’s a closet staple when you can dress as twins with the littles in your life.

Heather wears a size 18. “I loved this outfit with the pop of color for the shoes. I had added the white cardigan with this outfit to help with the ac in the office, but this was a great transition outfit for work to a night out.”

Danielle wears a size 2. “Dressed it up by adding a leopard clutch and striped heels. Added a jean jacket in case it would be cold in the restaurant”

How to Wear a Casual Black Dress: Try a Trend

Gabi wears a size 2. “I’ve learned so many fashion tips from my Style Sisters in the Facebook group including this clever one! If you don’t like rompers because they’re tricky to get into and out of, try a “fromper”, same coloured tee and shorts!” Gabi is referring to the Challenge Facebook Group that accompanies each Seasonal Style Challenge. Have you signed up for the Fall 2018 Capsule Wardrobe?

Melissa wears a size 24. “I finally found a plus size jump suit that worked for a petite plus body!” Some pieces are worth the time and effort it takes to find just the right fit.

Iris wears a size 4. “I styled it for the cooler weather that day, with the jumpsuit and cardi.”

Sarah wears a size 20. “My first jumpsuit ever, but it just felt too plain to me, so I added the denim vest!” Feeling comfortable in your clothes is the most important thing. Sarah figured out how to make this outfit feel right to her just by adding a little something.

Yes, You CAN Wear White Pants

Yes, You CAN Wear White Pants

by Jill Riley

There are three big questions that always seem to start the conversation around white pants: when can you start wearing white pants, can you keep white pants clean and will white pants really work for my size? All of these questions create a fear of white pants and can make this a polarizing piece of clothing. In the GYPO community, women are pushing the boundaries of their comfort zone all the time. Growing the confidence to try things they wouldn’t have in the past gives these women an opportunity to create a style all their own… and this is one wardrobe piece that usually ends up becoming a favorite closet staple. In this post, we want to tackle these questions head-on, our hope is to make it a little easier to take the first step in giving white pants a try.

Question 1: When can you start wearing white pants?

There is something empowering about challenging ideas of the past. Which white pants rule have you been following “just because” you heard it somewhere?

Take a minute to think about the reason for the rule. If you can’t find a good one, maybe it’s time to replace it with a new idea of what white pants might add to your closet.

These outfits from past season of Outfit Formulas® prove that white pants can really work any time of year.

Jessica says:

Before: “I can’t do that, I will get something on them or it’s after Labor Day that’s a no-no.”

Now: “Love them!”

Question 2: Can you keep white pants clean?

This is the question that had always stopped me from jumping into white pants, I tend to spill things quite a bit.

I searched through the Summer 2018 Capsule Wardrobe Facebook Community (one of the perks of joining a seasonal challenge) and found that there was a lot of advice on how to clean white pants when a stain does happen.

Everything was mentioned from commercial stain cleaners to homemade solutions. Carbona Color Run Remover and OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover were both well-loved products. Treating the stain with toothpaste, baking soda, hairspray, hand sanitizer, OR rubbing alcohol are some methods that have worked for a lot of the members. The tip I found to be most helpful is to treat the stain and then wash and rewash until the stain is gone, without drying between washes.

Julia says:

Before, “I can’t keep them clean.”

Now, “I love them and CAN keep them clean.”

Tina says:

Before, “After suffering severe anxiety over keeping my whites clean all through nursing school I never considered them as an option!”

Now, “Love them, especially now that they make stain-resistant ones!”

Cindy says:

Before, “I figured they would be like any other jean… then I saw them on me and felt like they showed my every flaw. I was also afraid because I am a frequent spiller.”

Now, “I feel confident. I spent a lot of time finding the right fit. I got the right undies and a lot of compliments to help out too! Now I just wear them confidently and appreciate their unique fit!”

Question 3: Will white pants work for my size?

This question is such a good one. The thickness of the fabric and the amount of stretch will make a difference in how the white pants you choose will look and feel. Try different underwear and be patient. This piece is such a wonderful addition to your closet, it’s worth putting the effort in to find just the right pair of white pants.

Michell says:

Before, “White pants made me super nervous! I’m plus size and had in my mind that white or light colored pants would just make me look bigger. Plus I thought I would get them stained or dirty!”

Now, “White pants are probably my favorite piece from the summer. They have been my “go-to” pant this season! I don’t think I’ve worn black pants hardly any at all this summer (and those were a staple for me!!) I now see white pants don’t make me “look” bigger if they are a flattering cut & fit. I’ve also got over my fear of them becoming stained or dirty – that’s what Shout is for – LOL!!”

Stacy says:

Before, “It took some getting used to. Initially, I pictured baggy, elastic waist pants that my grandma might wear. And then, of course, worried about white being plus size.”

Now, “Honestly, they are one of my favorite pairs of pants. They are so versatile and the fit I chose is perfect for my body. And just bleach them if they get dirty!”

Joyce says:

Before, “It was scary! I believed white on the bottom would make me look huge.”

Now, “I love them!”

Back to School Teacher Outfits to Wear Now and Later

by Alison Lumbatis

Like many of you, I have tons of respect for our teachers and all that they do for our kids. We are so very fortunate to have a quite a few teachers in the GYPO community. This time of the year, for all that they do, I try to make back to school an easier transition for them. One small way I can do that is by helping them out with what to wear for the perfect teacher outfits!

Today I’m partnering with J. Crew Factory with some “wear it now” and “wear it later” looks just for our hard working teachers! If you haven’t checked it out yet, J. These teacher outfits do double duty for the transition from summer to fall. You can wear them now as is and add on some layers later when the temps start to drop.

Sizing Tip: All pieces fit true to size. I’m wearing a size 2 or XS in all items and am 5’4″ and 125 lbs.

Day One – Wear it Now
