I’m Alison Lumbatis, creator of the style web site for real women Get Your Pretty On and I’d love to be your personal shopper and virtual stylist for the Work Your Work Wear Challenge! Watch this super short video to learn more about my style challenges.

How Does the Work Your Work Wear Challenge Work?

You’ll receive a shopping list of work wardrobe essentials perfect for a business casual office environment. Don’t worry – you won’t have to invest a ton of money to participate. A lot of the pieces might already be in your closet and you’re free to shop at your favorite stores. You can spend as much or as little as you want!

After the pieces are in place, you’ll have access to three weeks of daily outfit combos.  You can choose to style your pieces and wear the outfit that day or save it for another day. All of the outfits are able to be downloaded and printed so you can refer back to them.

What’s Included:

  • Your Work Wear Shopping List – A list of work wear essentials with links to recommended items plus a downloadable PDF to print off and take shopping with you.
  • Three Weeks of Daily Outfits – You’ll get three work weeks of different outfit combos to wear each day.
  • Facebook Group – Each style challenge has it’s own private Facebook group where you can show off your style, share shopping tips and make great friends. Most participants agree that this is the best part of the challenge!

How dressy will the outfits be?

The Work Your Work Wear Challenge will be perfect teachers or anyone who wants to kick their business casual wear up a notch. If you work in a dressier environment, you’ll be able to easily substitute pieces to accommodate it.  You’re also free to shop where you want and modify any of the pieces or outfits to suit your comfort level and style.

Here’s are some sample outfits from the challenge.

How Much Does it Cost to Participate?

If you were working one-on-one with a stylist and personal shopper, the average cost of a capsule wardrobe and three weeks of styling options would be well over $1,000! But one of the beliefs that I founded GYPO on is that great style should be accessible and affordable for everyone.  That’s why I’ve made participation in the Work Wear Challenge available for just $29.99.

Will I Have to Invest a lot of Money into the Shopping List?

It’s really up to you how much you want to spend. Many of the pieces will already be in your closet, I’m just showing you different ways to pair them up. If you decide to buy new items, you’re free to shop at your favorite stores and spend as much or as little as you want. Shopping list recommendations will include items from Target, Loft, Nordstrom, J. Crew, Boden, Old Navy, Banana Republic and other stores with both online and in store shopping options.  For this challenge, I do recommend investing in higher quality pieces that will stand the test of time.

What season is this challenge appropriate for?

The work wear challenge non-seasonal, meaning it can be worn in an office most times of the year.  Simply add or remove layers for comfort.

Does this challenge build on pieces from the other challenges?

Yes, if you’ve participated in past challenges, it’s very likely that you’ll get to use a few of those pieces in this challenge too.

What if I can’t find the pieces on the shopping list?

Most of the pieces can be found anywhere but just in case, I do provide substitutions.

I don’t work outside of the home, is this challenge right for me?

While there will be opportunities to substitute pieces to make the outfits more casual, this challenge will primarily be for office wear.  If you’re looking for a way to kick up your casual style a notch though, or keep the outfits for future reference, you’re welcome to participate.

Does this challenge include weekend outfits or just Monday through Friday?

This challenge will not include weekend outfits, just work days with a casual Friday each week.

What Other Style Challengers are Saying

I ABSOLUTELY love this challenge! One of the best parts of this list is how affordable it is! Each person can choose to spend as much or as little as they want on clothing items. I love that we will style clothes that can be from Target or Saks-and look absolutely gorgeous!

Thank you! Today was a breakthrough for me; I felt so good, confident and stylish, and yet still so comfortable–in my outfit and in my own skin. I wasn’t hiding under baggy clothes, wasn’t tugging on something that didn’t fit well, and wasn’t wearing something that didn’t feel like ME. What a difference! From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU all!

Looking at the clothes in my closet a whole different way…not something I would of even thought of a week ago…thank you for “challenging” me to go outside my “comfort level”!

I’m getting so many good ideas here and learning so much from what you’ve shared, I’ve started a little folder of pics/ideas to take shopping. I feel like I know what I’m looking for and shopping smarter. Thanks!

It’s nice to have a group of positive women encouraging each other. It’s very refreshing in our world-I’m feeling good about my body and clothing choices instead of feeling like I don’t measure up. Thanks Alison.

GYPO Style Challenges are about so much more than the clothes. They’re about changing lives one outfit at a time. Read what some past participants have to say about how it’s effected their lives.

This challenge has brought a NEW me. I am a teacher, a mom, wife, and this has helped bring a smile to my face every day! I am getting compliments on my outfits from teachers and my students are loving the accessories!” – Karan

“I’ve never been stopped by strangers and generally don’t get noticed. Don’t get me wrong – I’m extremely confident about my abilities, but not how I look. This week I have turned a corner. When I enter the office in the morning, the secretaries stop me to check me out. A total stranger at Target told me she loved my bright green trench coat and my scarf. Even middle school students have noticed that I’m looking different. And they approve. Earlier this week I texted my husband “I feel pretty” and he texted back “You ARE!” Maybe after a few more weeks of this I will believe it.” – Laura

“Besides having a ton of fun waiting for each day’s outfit to be revealed and tweaking it to fit my style, one of the best aspects of the Style Me Challenge has been the positive new friends I’ve connected with on the Challenge Facebook page! The kind words, humor, and genuine care for others have been such an inspiration and encouragement to me. No matter the age, body shape, or walk of life, it’s been a confidence builder to have a safe place to show my style!“ – Jena

“Just the thought of having all the right pieces and being ready to go out without having to stress about what to wear sounded like a dream. I had to sign up. It’s been exciting, from getting the list on the first day to the unveiling of the outfits each day, but little did I know that the Facebook group would be the highlight of this Challenge. How in the world do you have the nicest and most caring followers?! My family and friends have given me many compliments and feel that I am getting out of my comfort zone. The great thing about all of this is that even when I’m not physically feeling my best, looking good on the outside can make a big difference on how I feel on the inside. And for me, that’s totally worth it. 🙂 Thank you, Alison, from the bottom of my heart.” – Cathy

Ask Alison | Four Cool Ways to Accessorize When it’s Hot

Ask Alison | Four Cool Ways to Accessorize When it’s Hot

Today’s Ask Alison question comes from Ashley at My Food & Fitness Diaries.

Do you have any tips on accessorizing for the summer? Scarves instantly make it easier for me in the fall/winter months, but I’d love some cute accessory ideas for the summer. – Ashley

Ashley, I have this same problem because scarves are my go-to any other time of the year.  But scarves in Texas in the summer?

Only if spontaneous combustion appeals to you.  🙂

This is the time of the year where I pare down my accessories to keep things as simple as possible.  Who wants to pile on the arm candy or wear heavy statement necklaces on a 100 degree day?  I don’t even wear a watch in the dog days of summer.

Here are  four ways to beat the heat and still add some pizazz to your summer outfits.

1.  Hair Accessories

Hair wraps and head bands are two of my favorite ways to add a little interest to a summer outfit.  Since I usually wear my hair up on hot days, it just makes sense to add some kind of fun statement making accessory.  For Four Super Simple Summer Hairstyles, check out this post.

[Polka Dot Hair Wrap]

2. Embellished Sandals

Footwear as an accessory?  Yes!  Especially when it’s a cute embellished sandal that kicks up your outfit a notch.  Go with something attention getting like this chunky braided rope sandal.

[Gold Braided Sandals]

[Sam Edelman ‘Gigi’]

3.  Statement Earrings

Earrings are a great way to keep your cool while amp-ing up your style.  Don’t be afraid to go big and bold for summer.

[Kendra Scott ‘Elle’ in Chalcedony]

[Blue Cluster Drop Earrings]

4.  Long Necklaces

The key with summer accessories is to make as little contact with your skin as possible.  For this very reason, long pendant necklaces take the place of statement necklaces as my summer go-to.  They look great with simple tank tops and t-shirts.

Trend Watch | Winter Legwear

Trend Watch | Winter Legwear

When No nonsense contacted me to create some looks using their tights and leggings, you didn’t have to ask me twice!  Colored tights are something I was already wanting to add to my fall/winter wardrobe.  They are an inexpensive way to bring new life to sweater dresses and add a pop of color to basic black skirts and dresses.  I was on the verge of buying a bright yellow pair but held out for my products to arrive…and it paid off.

The first thing out of the box was a bright yellow pair of tights.  YES!

In that box was also the comfiest pair of skinny jeans leggings.  If you know me, you KNOW how much I love dark wash skinny jeans and you also know how much I love leggings.  So imagine how over the moon I was with something that combines BOTH!

Umm, can I live in these things?

When I pulled the No nonsense tights and leggings out of the packaging, the first thing I noticed is how incredibly well made their tights are.  They’re a medium weight and offer just the right amount of support.  There’s nothing I hate worse than tights that are too loose or don’t make me feel “held in”.  These did the job perfectly and felt as high quality as some much more expensive tights I’ve bought from specialty stores.

Here’s how I paired up the yellow tights with my Payday Pretty sweater dress.

[Sweater dress:  Ross (Same)/Scarf:  Gift (Similar)/Tights:  No nonsense/Boots:  Loft (Similar)/Necklace/Bangles:  Forever 21/Earrings:  Rue 21/Watch:  New York & Co. (Similar)]

When I slipped into the skinny jeans leggings, I knew I was in trouble.  They are so incredibly comfortable and forgiving.  So basically, I can eat my way through the holidays wearing these suckers every day and indulging in every sweet I want.  Woo hoo!

I paired them up with my other Payday Pretty find – this gray cableknit long cardigan.        [Sweater:  Ross (Similar)/Shirt:  Target (Similar)/Scarf:  Rue 21 (Similar)/Leggings:  No nonsense/Boot socks:  Target/Boots:  Lucky Brand (Similar)/Earrings:  Target]

Thank you, No nonsense for these easy, inexpensive ways to add some new life to my wardrobe!

BYOB – Build Your Outfit Basics

Week One – Dark Wash Skinny Jeans

There is possibly nothing more universally flattering on every woman than a perfect fitting pair of dark wash skinny jeans with some stretch.  They are slimming, forgiving and seem to hold everything in place just right.  I literally live in mine.  Every woman needs to have a pair of these in her wardrobe arsenal!

I REALLY hesitated to make all of the $20 and under jean inspirations from Forever 21 but then I caved.  After all, I have a whole closet full of their dark wash skinny jeans so I’m a believer.  And they fit the $20 and under budget so perfectly, some are only $10 a pair!  No, they aren’t the highest quality jeans on the market but they are pretty darn well made for the price.  They keep their color wash after wash, never stretch out and are true to fit which is more than I can say for some premium denim (I won’t name any names).  I also love the rise, not too high, not too low (no butt cleavage!). Forever 21 offers a wide variety of fits from petite to plus size, high waisted to classic fit.  There’s something to fit every body type.  The jeans below range in price from $10-$20.

Skinny Jeans for Every Body

High Waisted – $20/Alison’s Fave – $10.80/Classic Fit – $10.80/Plus Size – $13.50/Petite – $10.80

If you happen to pick up a pair of these this week, tell me about it!  I can’t wait to see all of your Payday Pretty finds. OH, one more thing before I go, I’ll be drawing 25 winnners for my Firmoo eyewear giveaway on Monday.  It’s a low entry giveaway so if you haven’t entered yet, you still have time to do it here! a Rafflecopter giveaway

Stay pretty, my friends!
