Project Runway Inspired Eyes

Project Runway Inspired Eyes

OK, girls, this was a really fun post for me to create so I hope you enjoy it too. As you know by now, I work from home and don’t get a lot of opportunities to get really glammed up, which I sometimes miss. So when Mary Kay® asked me to create some Project Runway-inspired eye makeup looks, I jumped at the opportunity. Mary Kay® supplied the tools and products to create two ready to wear makeup looks inspired by season 13 of Project Runway. Both of these looks were created by Mary Kay® Global Makeup Artist Luis Casco. My teen daughter is obsessed with Project Runway, so she was more than happy to be my assistant to help photograph and create the looks for this post.

Emerald Smoke Look

Green is one of the hottest shades for fall and I love how it brightens any color eyes!” – Luis Casco

To create this look, I followed these steps provided by Luis and Mary Kay:

1. Apply Mary Kay® Cream Eye Color in Meadow Grass to eyelids as a base. Then apply Mary Kay® Mineral Eye Color in Emerald on top. Next brush Mary Kay® Mineral Eye Color in Lime to the inner thirds of the yes with the Mary Kay® Smudger Brush to brighten up eyes.

2. With the Mary Kay® Eyeliner in Black, line the top and bottom lash lines and smudge it slightly to create a smoky look.

3. Next apply two coats of Mary Kay® Lash Love Lengthening Mascara.

4. Blend Mary Kay® Cream Blush in Cranberry onto the apples of cheeks using either your fingers or a foundation brush. I’d recommend starting as sheer as possible and then building up to the right intensity.

5. For lips, first line them in Mary Kay® Lip Liner in Cappuccino and then top off with True Dimensions Lipstick in Mystic Plum.

My Take:

This look is really wearable for my every day. I don’t typically wear green eye makeup but I loved how it looked with my brown eyes and have found some new go-to colors. Overall it was a much subtler effect than I thought it would be. The bold cranberry cheeks and lip color were really nice with green.

Graphic Eye Look

There’s nothing cooler than a cat eye right now. Try combining black gel eyeliner with an unexpected shade like blue for a look that’s right on trend.” – Luis Casco

For the graphic eye look, I did the following:

1. As a base, apply Mary Kay® Mineral Eye Color in Moonstone to eyelids. Next brush Mary Kay® Mineral Eye Color in Driftwood to the creases and under the eyes to create depth using the Mary Kay® Eye Crease Brush.

2. In a very thin line, apply Mary Kay® at Play Bold Fluid Eyeliner in Blue My Mind from the upper inner corners to the middle of your eyes. Then apply Mary Kay® Gel Eyeliner in Jet Black from the outer corner in to meet the blue eyeliner.

3. Next apply Mary Kay® Bronzing Powder in Light-Medium to the cheeks as a highlighter for a bronzed look. Use the Medium-Dark bronzer shade around the hairline and under cheekbones to create contour.

4. Apply two coats of Mary Kay® Ultimate Mascara in Black.

5. For lips, apply True Dimensions Lipstick in Pink Cherie and top off with Mary Kay® NouriShine Plus Lip Gloss in Au Naturel. mary-kay-graphic-eye-2

My Take: This was so much fun for a fantasy look! I’ve always wanted to try a cat eye but haven’t really had the opportunity to wear one. I’d definitely try this look again for a night out or special occasion. The bronzer contouring was my favorite part. It gave my skin such a nice warm glow that still looked natural. The key to wearing a bold eye like this is a subtle lip and this pink was perfect for that!

Fresh Nail Colors for Fall 2014

Fresh Nail Colors for Fall 2014

If you read my Budgeting for Clothing post, you already know that I’d much rather get my nails done than buy clothes.  When I tune into what’s new on the runways each season, I’m more interested in seeing the nail colors than the fashion.  Nail polishes translate more easily into my everyday life than haute couture anyway.  Each season I anxiously await the new “it” colors so I can buy a few new colors for my own collection and plan my salon visits accordingly.

The hot new nail colors for fall 2014 did not disappoint.  Most of them are totally wearable and colors that I already love.  Without further ado, here are the top five trends in nail polish for fall 2014.

1.  Greige

This mixture between gray and beige looks so polished and goes with everything.  It’s my current go-to nail color.

2.  Pinky Nudes

Neutral nails are always in style.  This season’s nudes have a sweet hint of pink to them.

[OPI ‘Barefoot in Barcelona’]

3.  Jewel Tones

Shades of deep burgundy, emerald, deep blue and magenta are quintessentially autumn hues.  Try one with a little sparkle.

4.  Metals

Metallics in gold, silver and pewter are on the scene again this fall.  I’m a huge fan of Sally Hansen’s Miracle Gel formulas.  They last for weeks without a drying light.

5.  Bold

Bold colors are big for fall and winter 2014.  A risk-free way to try the trend is with a bold nail color like this vibrant violet.

I Feel Pretty | Chambray, Pink and Whales

I Feel Pretty | Chambray, Pink and Whales

My style goal this summer was to break out of the daily summer rut of my typical tank top, shorts and flip flops.  It may not sound that hard but it has been.  Mainly because it’s HOT in Texas so that severely limits my options, especially when it comes to layering.

So when I paired up this outfit wearing my favorite chambray, a bubblegum pink tank and my embroidered whale shorts, I was pretty excited.  The layers are light enough to work even on a hot day and let’s talk about these shorts for a second.  I may have squealed with delight (and embarrassed my daughter) when I found them at Marshall’s.  They are just so darn cute!  Every time I wear them, I get compliments from strangers.  (You can find some similar pairs here and here.)

Ask Alison | Four Simple Summer Hairstyles

Ask Alison | Four Simple Summer Hairstyles

Today’s Ask Alison question was posted in the Summer Style Me Pretty Challenge Facebook group from one of the challengers.

I could use some cute, easy ways to style my hair up for summer.  Nothing too crazy that requires an extra set of hands or a ton of products.  All of the ones on Pinterest say they’re easy but then they end up being 17 steps.  Help!  – Ashley

Well, Ashley you’re in luck because all of my hairstyles take seconds to master.  Yes, you read that right, SECONDS.  Most of them are only three steps.  How’s that for super simple?

You just need to start out with clean, dry hair.  Actually one of them only requires your hair to be clean, not dry and with the others it can be dirty.  So scratch that.

I told you this would be easy, right?

Sound too good to be true?  Then watch this quick video I put together with my four super simple summer hairstyles.  These are my go-to hairstyles when it’s just too hot to make much of an effort.

Week One | Summer GYPO Style Challenge

Week One | Summer GYPO Style Challenge

TGIF pretties!  Over in Summer GYPO Style Challenge land we are finishing out our first full week of outfits.  One of my favorite parts of the challenge is seeing each challenger’s spin on the daily outfit.  If you’re not familiar with how the style challenge works, each participant is given a shopping list of outfit essentials.  After they have the pieces in place, I give them 21 days worth of daily outfits created from them.  Modifications and substitutions are A-OK and actually highly encouraged!

The two comments I’ve heard the most during this first week are:

1.  It’s SO nice not having to think about what I’m wearing every day.

2.  I’m way out of my comfort zone…and it feels good!

Continuing in the tradition of the Spring GYPO Style Challenge, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite looks from each of the three weeks of the summer outfits.

Here are my week one outfit picks.

On day three of the challenge, we styled a red/white striped shirt with khaki shorts, a long necklace and metallic sandals.
