Baby, it’s cold outside and that means it’s time to break out the winter coats from the back of the closet. As you’re going through your collection of coats I’m sure you, like many other Pretties, are wondering what coats deserve to stay and what coats should no longer take up precious closet space. For some, a coat is more than a fashion statement, it’s winter essential to keep you from freezing to death, literally. While for others it’s something you throw on to keep the chill away. No matter what category you fall into, there’s no reason why you can’t have it all.
As we’ve seen over the past few years trends have come and gone and come back again. But we must not forget the classics. They never go out of style but every so often have their moment in the spotlight. In short, you can never go wrong with a classic. Below I’m going to shed some light on a few winter coat trends as well as some classics that you can feel confident keeping in your closet year after year. Keep in mind many of these trends overlap and can turn a classic into a trend and vice versa. At the end of the day, I always say, if you love the way it looks and makes you feel then it’s a keeper.
Tip: You can’t go wrong choosing any of the below coats, classic or trend, in a bright color. This winter is full of vibrant color choices and it’s a great way to add a pop of color to any outfit!
1. Leather
If you’ve been hanging around GYPO or Outfit Formulas® for the past month then you know leather is very on-trend this winter. So why is this both a classic and a trend? Well, trench coats are also popular this winter but you won’t get as much longevity out of a leather trench coat as you would say a leather moto jacket.
This jacket screams cozy! Even though the actual term shearling refers to a lambskin and wool coat, the synthetic version is called sherpa. However the two names are pretty interchangeable, it would just be a faux shearling unless you are looking for the real thing. This type of jacket is like wrapping yourself in a big hug. It comes in many different forms as well. Some have only shearling accents around the cuffs or collars, while some have it on the inside of the jacket as well as out. Don’t forget the sherpa-lined denim and corduroy jackets too!
This is a tricky coat because oversized puffers are on-trend but do we really want to look like a marshmallow? It’s a fine balance between having the puffed look but in a more fitted and figure-flattering way. This is a perfect example of taking a trend and making it work for you. There are tons of jackets out there that follow the puff trend but won’t overwhelm you. With the new technology and materials available, jackets don’t need to be thick to be warm. Take the Patagonia Women’s Nano Puff® Jacket, while this is a puffer jacket, it’s not as bulky. I would totally consider this an investment piece but it’s one that will keep you warm and be current year after year.
Printed jackets are all the rage this winter. The most popular prints are plaid and leopard. Keep in mind that any printed jacket can cross over multiple coat categories such as a plaid puffer or a leopard faux fur. This is an item I wouldn’t break the bank over unless it’s a classic silhouette like a plaid peacoat. Even if it’s not ‘on-trend’ you won’t look out of style wearing it.
Love ’em or hate ’em the shirt jacket or the ‘shacket’ is the take-off trend of the winter. The shacket is a button-down shirt (sometimes with snaps instead of buttons) but way thicker than your typical button-down. This is perfect for the Pretties who don’t live in the extremely cold temps but still need that top layer. And for those who do need the extra warmth, a shacket makes the perfect mid-layer.
If you are in the market for something a bit more neutral then the camel color coat is just what you’re looking for. Camel can be seen in all the coat trends mentioned here and if you want something timeless, you can’t go wrong with a camel color peacoat or trench.
It’s easy to get a faux fur jacket mixed up with a shearling jacket. It goes like this, all shearling jackets are fur, but not all fur is shearling. If that doesn’t help, typically shearling or sherpa is a lower pile while fur is typically fuller. If you don’t want to go for the all-over faux fur look, try a coat that has fur trim around the collar for added texture and detail.
I don’t know about you but when I think of a trench coat I think of springtime, a lightweight fabric that will help keep the April showers away. But after doing some more digging on this trend, it is indeed perfect for winter. The main defining factor of a trench coat is the length, which usually hits around the knees. The winter trench coat is also known as a topper coat and can come in many different forms, wool, like a peacoat, leather, as I mentioned above, or printed.
This coat is exactly what you would think it to be, quilted, however, it does have a modern twist. I didn’t think I would like this trend but after seeing a few examples it’s beginning to grow on me. It also comes in different lengths and thicknesses meaning you’re sure to find one that fits your climate.
This last trend will definitely push one outside their comfort zone but I would be remiss if I didn’t at least include it and let you decide for yourself. It’s the two-tone coat. In its most basic form, this coat looks like it’s two different coats sewed together right down the middle. The two-tone coat can be monochromatic or straight-up contrast. This is definitely one of those polarizing trends where you either love it or hate it and that’s okay.
Ponchos and capes are making a huge comeback this winter. So if you have any laying in your closet now is the time to break them out! They are super easy to throw on and finish off any outfit. If it’s feeling too full and voluminous, add a belt to help balance out your proportions.
Your turn! What winter coat trend is your favorite?
It’s one of my favorite times of the year! No, I’m not talking about the holidays, although, they are magical. I’m talking about the release of the Outfit Formulas® Winter 2021 Capsule Wardrobe! I know I say this every time, but I’m really excited about this one. As always when putting together the seasonal capsules I start with a great base of closet staples and mix in some trends and this winter has some trends I’m really loving. That’s why for this month’s Pretty Fix I’m featuring one of the looks from the Outfit Formulas® Winter 2021 Capsule Wardrobe.
So what is the Pretty Fix you may ask? The Pretty Fix is where I showcase a head-to-toe outfit that features classic pieces as well as trends you can mix in to freshen up your closet. For this look I’m focusing on the leather trend, the velvet trend, the leopard always trend, and white during winter. I know it sounds like a lot but most of these items you may already have but maybe you just never paired them together. I always encourage you to try something before you decide you don’t like it. But if it’s truly a ‘heck no,’ then you can easily mix in other options. Hence the versatility of Outfit Formulas®!
Black Moto Jacket + Solid Top + Off-White Bottoms + Leopard Shoe
Shop the Look
1. Black Moto Jacket
The first piece to this month’s Pretty Fix is a black moto jacket. This is what I consider to be a classic piece and I wouldn’t stop you if you wanted to make this one of your investment pieces. Just pick a classic color and silhouette. While this item can come in leather or suede, leather is definitely having a moment this winter. It’s everywhere from main pieces like jackets, skirts, and pants, but it’s also in cute accessories like headbands and bracelets. The best thing about leather is that it’s a neutral that packs a punch! It adds a lot of great dimension and texture to your outfit so don’t be afraid to add leather pieces to your closet this winter.
2. Solid Velvet Top
Velvet is another texture that can be seen in many different clothing pieces and accessories this season. I know velvet is one of those polarizing trends that can stir up mixed emotions but when paired together right, it just might turn into your new favorite winter staple!
3. Off-White Bottoms
Off-white, winter white, plain white, whatever name you want to call it, white bottoms are a must for all seasons, even winter. They just add a certain something to any outfit and they are a great alternative to blue jeans. They can easily be dressed up or kept casual and look fabulous with boots.
4. Leopard Shoes
Leopard print is a classic. Sometimes it has its moments more than others but you’d never be considered ‘out of style’ if you’re rocking a leopard print. I love my leopard flats and boots and I will always have them in my closet. I especially love leopard in the winter. There’s something warm, cozy, and stylish about a big, bold leopard print this time of year.
5. Black Handbag
The quilted handbags of fall are still very much on-trend for winter whether you choose a crossbody, shoulder, tote, or hobo bag. There are so many cute ones, some of which also include the chunky chain link trend. No matter what style you choose, having a classic black handbag is a great winter closet staple!
6. Layered Necklace
The layered necklace is a classic and perfect for wintertime because it can easily be worn under your favorite scarf. There are a few different ways to accomplish this look. There are tons of cute necklaces out there that are sold at one piece but have multiple strands. Or you can create your own using the necklaces you already have. The trick is to layer the dainty ones first and finish off with the chunkier ones. Also, to help keep them from getting tangled, make sure the necklace isn’t twisted when you put it on. For even more help keeping them separated, you can use a layered necklace connector.
7. Textured Hoop Earrings
I love a different take on a classic piece. Recently I’ve been obsessed with square or rectangle hoop earrings but now I’m eyeing up some fun and funky, textured hoop earrings. They are almost like a statement earring but not as big. They just add a unique twist to the hoop earring.

That’s why today I’m sharing with you five days of winter Outfit Formulas® from the Outfit Formulas® Winter 2021 Capsule Wardrobe to help minimize your daily decision-making stress.
Sometimes the last thing we want to think about during the day is ‘what am I going to wear?’ It’s easy to stay in sweats and a hoodie all day. But let’s face it, this time of year we’re running all over the place – school concerts, cookie exchanges, holiday parties, gatherings with friends. The sweats outfit option, although comfy, may not be the best option.
Below are five casual Outfit Formulas® that can easily be dressed up or down depending on your occasion. I left all the links to the original items, even the sold-out ones. I know, especially during this time of year, items can be sold out and then come back in stock, or maybe you can find it at your local store. This way if you have your heart on trying to find one of the pieces, you know where to look. If you like what you see and you want more, like a whole month more of days where you don’t have to think about what you wearing then don’t wait, check out the Outfit Formulas® Winter 2021 Capsule Wardrobe today!
Day #1
Plaid Shirt + Black Top + Light Wash Jeans + Black Boots
Shop the look
I love the casual look of formula number one. For this look, I’m wearing pretty much everything from above except for my black turtle neck which is closet shopped, and my jeans which are by 7 For All Mankind that I found at Nordstrom Rack. If you like the frayed hem, this pair is very similar. I also swapped in my rectangle hoops from Alison + Aubrey for the studs.
Day #2
Dark Gray Cardigan + Solid Top 1 + Gray Bottoms + Plaid Shoes
Shop the look
I know what you’re thinking with this second look, sweater on sweater crime, but it’s really not. For the second formula, I paired a cardigan with a solid top that ribbed and fully buttons like a cardigan but feels more like a tee. But you know what? That’s the best part about Outfit Formulas®, you have options! You can use whatever solid top you want! For this look, I’m wearing everything from above except for the belt which I closet shopped.
Plaid is back! Although that’s really not much of a surprise this time of year. However, this is the first time in a long time that I purchased a plaid skirt and I’m loving it way more than I thought. I paired it with a simple cream top and a neutral cardigan. Then for something that was a little outside my comfort zone, I added a felt hat. This hat has turned into one of my favorite pieces and I find myself pairing it up with a lot of my outfits. I’m wearing everything from above except my cardigan which I bought in spring. This cardigan is pretty similar.
Day #4
Black Moto Jacket + Solid Top 2 + Black Bottoms + Leopard Shoes
Shop the look
I have to say I’m pretty obsessed with formula number four. I’m wearing almost everything from above including my favorite leather jacket. This was an investment piece I bought a few years ago and it’s still going strong. I choose a classic silhouette so I would ensure many years of use out of it. My jeans are by Blank NYC which I also found at Nordstrom Rack. This pair of black jeans are pretty similar. I added a solid yellow velvet top for a pop of color and finished off with some leopard boots!
Day #5
Solid Sweater + Off White Bottoms + Taupe Ankle Boots
Shop the look
I’m the kind of girl that thinks white can be worn all year long. That’s why for my last formula, a paired up a cozy sweater in a rich burgundy color, perfect for winter, with some off-white jeans and taupe ankle boots. And yes, the hat is back. I love the way this outfit turned out. I’m wearing everything from above but if you don’t want to invest in off-white jeans this look will work perfectly with white ones too.

Plaid Shirt + Black Top + Light Wash Jeans + Black Boots
I can’t believe Thanksgiving is only ONE day away! It feels like Halloween was just yesterday. I don’t know about you, but I feel like the holidays just fly by quicker and quicker each year. Between buying gifts (and worrying about them not shipping in time), cooking, baking, preparing the house for guests, attending parties, and children’s programs, the LAST thing we often think about is how we’re going to wear our makeup for those picture-perfect holiday events. The only thing worse than feeling like you have nothing to wear is feeling like you don’t know how to wear your makeup and make it work for you! Makeup is my favorite accessory (yes it counts as an accessory) because there are SO many different ways to change up the look of your outfit with it, from everyday chic to full-on glam. Even the tones you wear can make a huge impact on your overall look. Let’s dive into three holiday makeup looks ANYONE can do, from makeup beginners to makeup mavens!
Look #1
The Cookie Exchange (Daytime Shimmer)
Let’s start with a casual daytime look. When attending a holiday event during the day, such as a cookie exchange – my personal favorite, you’ll want to keep your makeup more neutral but add a little something special. My favorite way to do this is with shimmer! I know what you’re thinking- “but can I wear shimmer if I’m over the age of 18?” I’m here to tell you that yes, you CAN. You just have to wear it in the right places on your face. My two favorite ways to do this are with eyeshadow & illuminator. Below are some steps to achieve a daytime shimmer look.
Step 1
Apply your routine daytime makeup look using foundation, blush, and neutral lip color that you love. A dewy bb cream or foundation is best for this look.
Step 2
Apply a basic midshade eyeshadow in your crease and a deeper shade in the outer V if you’re feeling fancy.
Step 3
Shimmer time! The easiest way to apply shimmer eyeshadow is with your finger! I apply it on the lid, brow bone, and inner corner of the eye. I like a darker shade on the lid and a lighter shade on the inner corner and brow bone, but it’s all preference! Below are some great shimmer eyeshadows plus what I’m wearing.
Tip: Apply a white base like NYX White Eyeshadow Base on the areas you are going to apply shimmer for a true-to-color look and to prevent fall out! You can also use a concealer as I show HERE!
Apply shimmer to the tops of cheekbones, cupid’s bow (right above the middle of your top lip), and the tip of the nose – anywhere you want a little extra glow. I recommend using a cream illuminator like Soft Focus Glow by Milani for this step or a cream shimmer eyeshadow. It works much better with any fine lines or wrinkles.
Tip: AVOID adding highlighter to crow’s feet and fine lines, or any areas you don’t want to draw attention to.
Here are some examples of how you can play with different shimmer colors for a variety of looks!
Look #2
The Holiday Cocktail Party
Dressy holiday parties in the evening usually require a little more oomph from your makeup. We always want our makeup to match the “fancy” level of our outfit to keep it streamlined. The easiest way to do this: wear a bold lip! No, it doesn’t have to be red but red is fun! The great part is, you can transition to this look from the daytime look I did above if you have two events in one day, especially since we didn’t go heavy on the eyes.
Tip: Pick ONE feature to go bold on so you don’t look like “a clown” as many women say.
Step 1
Put on your daytime shimmer makeup look detailed above.
Step 2
Add a bold lip! It can be red, berry, fuschia, whatever vibe you love that makes you feel beautiful!
Tip:To choose your perfect red, pick one with the OPPOSITE undertones of your lips (aka blue undertones choose an orange-based red).
Contour or line your lips. You can use a cream bronzer, cream contour, or lip pencil to do this. It will help keep your lip color on and keep it from going outside your lip line. You can do this before or after you add lip color – either way works! Here’s a tutorial showing you how to get a dimensional lip.
Tip: If you’re terrified of a bold lip, try a sheer gloss or balm. You’ll still get the difference in color to accessorize your look but without it being quite so bright.
The dreaded family photos. We all hate taking them, but we love the results so it’s worth spending a little extra time on this look. This is not the time to do your 5-minute makeup. Details matter when it comes to photo makeup. We’re going to use some tips from both looks for this, and when it comes to photo makeup: More is more. The camera washes everything out so we have to add that dimension back in ourselves. To get that picture-perfect look:
Tip: While you’re doing your makeup, check it in your phone camera instead of your mirror. This will show you how it will actually look in photos and if you need to add more or blend better.
1. Sunless Tanner
Start with a tan. A golden glow will really keep you from looking washed out in photos. My favorite facial tanner Coola’s Organic Sunless Tan Anti-Aging Face Serum is this one and for body and decolletage, I like Express Tan Water by Tanologist. This can be done a few nights before your pictures. However, if you aren’t familiar with using a sunless tanner I suggest doing a test run a week or so before to make sure you have the right shade. Sunless tanners last about 5-7 days so if you don’t like it, it will be gone before your photo.
This goes against my typical skincare advice, but on picture day skip the SPF. It actually causes a flash in the photos. But for all intents and purposes, SPF should be a daily part of your skincare routine to protect your skin, just not on picture day.
4. add some Contour
You may not want to but you need some contouring in photos! This will help create dimension. Use a deeper shade for photos than you normally would or it won’t pick up. Check out my video on contouring HERE!
5. Next some blush
Just like adding layers to your outfit is great for adding dimension to your pictures, adding layers to your face adds dimension as well. So don’t skip the blush! Even a nude shade is fine. Blush will help add depth and dimension to your photos.
6. Give Yourself Some Color
If you used a sunless tanner as suggested in step one you may be tempted to skip this step but adding a touch of bronzer will help you avoid that washed-out look. And if you didn’t use a sunless tanner, this is an easy way to add a warm glow to your face. I prefer a cream but use whatever you have!
7. Shimmer Can Equal Shine
Go easy on the shimmers for this look. You can wear some, but too much may reflect light off of the flash of the camera.
Add a brighter concealer under your eye. This will give you a glow and add dimension.
10. Finally the lips
Contour or line your lips, especially if you’re wearing a nude lip, so they don’t get washed out (see step 3 from Look #2).
Final Holiday Makeup Look
With these looks and tips, you’ll be ready for any holiday event life throws at you this season! Remember- just like we look through our closet first with clothes, look through your makeup bag first and use what you have! You may be surprised! Happy holidays!

I’ve been participating in the GYPO Style Challenges for three years now and I’ve loved it. I’ve always loved clothes, but I didn’t know how to put outfits together. My closet is now full of mix-and-match outfits, I have learned how to dress myself, and there is no more stress in figuring out to wear. The private FB group is full of wonderful ladies that build each other up. It’s so fun and is seriously the best group on FB.

Get Your Pretty On has changed my life, seriously. I have always chased what is trendy but found from season to season, that things go out of style and I was wasting money on items that I would only end up wearing a few times. GYPO has enabled me to simplify my closet, helps me make smarter purchasing decisions, and I feel so put together and confident using the outfit formulas that are provided. This program is a GAME CHANGER. I've been following GYPO for a few years now and my only regret is not jumping on board sooner.
Michelle Kline November 20, 2019
Great community of ladies, helping each other look stylish, without breaking the bank, and using much of what you already own.
Chosen Faith November 19, 2019
GYPO challenges have been one of the best things I have done! It had taught me so much more than just creating a closet of clothes that I love but also to have confidence in myself, how to pick and choose colors that work for me instead of against, and had given a wonderful community of Pretties who are so special.
