Fall is in the air, at least in most places. I live in Southern Georgia, so for me, fall is putting on my favorite fleece, hiding under my favorite blanket, burning my favorite pumpkin spice candle and turning the A/C down a few degrees so I don’t sweat my butt off. Fall will eventually come to these parts, but until then, I will just have to pretend.
It reminds me though, that even the smallest of things can bring great joy. Whether it’s a change in seasons or the smell of your kids when you kiss them goodnight, a product that makes life easier or that perfect fitting pair of jeans. Sometimes it doesn’t take much to make one smile.
In honor of smiles everywhere, I’m happy to introduce the Favorite Finds Series! This series will feature three to five items and include everything from fashion and makeup, to food, decor and home life. It’s a place where I plan to showcase things I have discovered that have made me smile or made life a little easier, which also makes me smile. My hope is that my latest discoveries will make you smile as well.
1. Clay Art Mugs
I love big mugs, so it is very likely that you will not find anything that holds less than 16oz in my mug collection. And because one mug is never enough, I’m constantly on the lookout for big, beautiful mugs that will hold a lot of liquid. Imagine my delight when I stumbled onto Target’s line of mugs by Clay Art! Not only do they have witty sayings and come in a beautiful array of colors and patterns, but they can hold 26 glorious ounces! Some may think that is just too big. I, however, love not having to refill my cup throughout my day and I can drink hot coffee in the morning, then if it lasts into the afternoon, I add ice instant iced coffee! Plus, if anyone asks, I can honestly say I’ve only had one cup of coffee today.

This is the mug that spoke to me! Not only do I love these colors, but I love the saying on it!
2. Lion Coffee Toasted Coconut
Now that I have the perfect mug, coincidently I also found something amazing to put in it! While visiting family in Florida, I was introduced to Lion Coffee – Toasted Coconut. My cousin offered to make me a cup for the road trip home and it was love at first sip. I can only describe the coconut flavor as warm and cozy. Normally when I think of coconut I think of summer but there’s something about this coffee, maybe because the coconut is toasted, but it is heaven in a cup. Look for it in your local grocery store, but if you can’t find it there, you can order directly from the company or from other retailers like Target and Amazon.

3. Bath and Body Works 3-Wick Candle – Leaves
As I previously stated, until fall actually comes to Southern Georgia, I must play pretend. To help set the fall mood, I love to burn my Bath and Body Works 3-Wick candle in the Leaves scent. The name of this candle totally threw me off and I wasn’t even going to smell it until the sales lady told me I “just had to.” In my mind I was already smelling rain-soaked leaves and that was not appealing to me. I was delightfully surprised by the smell of apples, cinnamon and clove. To me, these scents scream fall even if the weather outside does not. The candle is a bit strong so I recommend burning it in a large area. If you are very sensitive to scents you may want to look for another option.

Throwing away makeup seems almost sacrilegious, especially when there still is some left. We are taught not to waste, yet here I stand, going through my makeup bag and cringing as I toss my half-full mascara into the trash. So why am I putting myself through this torture? Because as much as I don’t like to admit it, makeup has a shelf life. Trust me, I learned the hard way with a painful eye infection several years ago. Now I take this seriously and purge my makeup on regular basis, instead of every five years or so.
When I was working full-time and wore makeup daily, I usually ran out of my products before they had a chance to expire. Now, as a full-time mom to three busy kids, I don’t always wear makeup and definitely not as much as I used to, so odds are that my makeup will expire before it’s gone. Below is a chart of common makeup products and their open shelf life.

Tip: Pin this chart so you can refer back to it later!
While this is a great reference chart, it still can be hard to remember what products expire and when. As if my mental to-do list wasn’t already maxed out, let’s add one more thing I needed to remember! Sadly, this task typically ranked low on that list. I have few tips, however, that have helped me keep track of my makeup and keep it from prematurely ending up in the trash.
Below are my five tips for keeping my makeup “fresh” and making it last as long as it should.
1. Keep Makeup Out of the Heat
Keep your makeup out of the heat! Whether you are leaving your makeup in a hot car, a sunny spot on the counter or too close to your hot shower, heat will cause makeup to age way before its time. The heat and condensation will cause a breakdown in your makeup, creating the perfect environment for bacteria and fungus to grow.
2. Find Your Makeup’s Cheat Sheet
I recently learned about this too, but a majority of makeup and skin care products have what is called a Period After Opening (PAO) symbol. The PAO includes a number followed by the letter “m” which stands for months. This awesome little symbol acts as a handy cheat sheet for knowing how long the product will last once it is opened. Seriously? How did I not know about this sooner?

Hint: Anytime I open up a new product I figure out the approximate toss date and write it directly on the item. This way I don’t have to guess how long it’s been in my makeup bag and if it’s expired or not.

3. Wash Your Brushes
Regularly washing your brushes will help keep bacteria out of your makeup and off your face. While it is recommended that you wash your brushes daily, I admit I usually don’t have the time to do that. I strive for weekly cleanings with the exception of my eyeliner brush, which I wash every time I use it. There are several products that you can use to clean your brushes but lukewarm water and shampoo works just as well. After washing your brushes be sure to reshape them and let them dry thoroughly before using them again.

4. Do Not Leave Your Makeup Open
Leaving your makeup open, whether it is a powder blush or a liquid liner, is a big No No! In addition to drying out and rendering the makeup useless, you are also allowing it to be exposed to the elements including water, hair spray and dust. You have spent good money on your makeup, take care of it!
5. Buy Products from Reputable Distributors
This may seem like common sense, but sometimes it is hard to pass up a third-party good deal on makeup that typically is on the pricey side. Remember though, makeup has a definitive shelf life and once opened, the clock is ticking. Another question to consider: are you getting the real thing or a knock-off? Knowing that this is something you are going to use on your skin, around your eyes and on your lips, isn’t it worth it knowing that what you are getting is safe and unopened?
Bonus: Buy Travel Sizes
If you’re like me and you don’t wear makeup every day, there’s a chance that also like me, you often throw out your makeup before it is finished. To help combat this dilemma, I try to buy travel sizes or sample sizes of products that I don’t use as quickly or that have a shorter shelf life. By buying the smaller sizes I am spending less money and chances are greater that I will run out of the product before it is time to toss it.
Benefit Gimme Brow
Above all, when it comes to your makeup, use common sense. If it does not look, smell or “act” right, throw it out. It’s not worth the risk. If you just bought the makeup, take it back to the store; others may be having the same issue and the distributor would want to know. In addition, if you develop an eye infection, such as conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, everything you have used around your eyes since the infection occurred must be replaced. I know it’s not easy, but in the long run, the health of your eyes, skin and body is worth it!

In today’s Ask Alison, I’m answering a question submitted by one of the Pretties about how to pair up fall’s shoe trends with pants.
Hey Alison, any chance you could talk about proper pant lengths and how to wear different styles with shoes? Thats where the frump kicks in for me…”
This can definitely be a little bit tricky but if you follow the advice and diagrams below, you’ll be good to go!

Tip: Pin this infographic so you can refer back to it later.
1. Ankle Boots
Ankle boots are really versatile and go with just about everything. The real trick in pairing them up is to make sure that your pants are the proper length. You want them to hit about an inch above the top of the boot (flares are the exception, they should cover most of the boot). If your skinny or straight leg jeans are too long, cuff them. HERE are some great examples of where they should hit.

Pair With: Boyfriend jeans, dresses, flares, skinny jeans, skirts and ankle pants.

Doesn’t Pair Well With: Long skinny jeans, cuff them.
2. Flats
Ballet flats, slip on sneakers, loafers and mules can be worn with virtually everything. Just be sure your pants aren’t so long that you’re stepping on them.

Pair With: Boyfriend jeans, skinny jeans, ankle pants, skirts, flares, dresses and leggings.

Doesn’t Pair Well With: Pants that are too long. Wear flats into the fitting room when trying on.
3. Riding Boots
There’s only one rule to remember when it comes to riding boots…no baggy knees! Be sure that your pants are slim fitting enough to create a smooth silhouette when tucked into your riding boots. That means they should almost be a second skin. If you’re not comfortable with something that fits that tight, pair it up with a longer tunic style top.

Pair With: Skinny jeans, dresses, skirts and leggings

Doesn’t Pair Well With: Flares, straight leg jeans or anything not slim fitting
