Happy Friday pretties! Oh happy day, my packages finally arrived from shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I wanted to do this post last week but I was still waiting for the mules to come and didn’t want to post an incomplete outfit. But you got Craig’s anniversary sale picks for men in it’s place so I count that as a win!
My approach to this year’s sale was pretty much the same as usual. I didn’t really set a budget but I did try to focus on freshening up some basics and adding at least one new fall trend.
For my fun fall trend, I couldn’t resist these embroidered velvet mules. When the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale catalog came out, these were the one item that I circled like a little kid at Christmas! Fun shoes are becoming one of my favorite ways to add interest to an outfit.
My total for these three new items came to $120 but I had a $20 Nordstrom Note to apply bringing it down to just $100. These frayed hem jeans are also from Nordstrom (and my favorite pair) but I already had them so they didn’t factor into my total. P.S. I apologize in advance if links are sold out. Some pieces are getting restocked, so keep an eye out!
After Craig did his menswear post last week, my daughter Aubrey got her feelings a little hurt. So I let her get in on the fun and pick out some of her favorite pieces for juniors from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. She had to one up her dad by going one step further and putting them into seven days of fall outfits!
It’s Your Turn: What’s your big sale shopping philosophy? Do you shop with a budget and some pieces in mind? Or do you wing it and buy what you like?

We’re a little more than halfway through the summer, and I’m officially over my hair. It’s too hot to leave it down all the time and between keeping the home life in order, and trying to get as much pool time in with the kids as we can before school starts, I just don’t feel like devoting the time it takes to leave my hair down and not have it look like a raggedy mess.
Don’t get me wrong, as hot as it may be, I still like having my hair long. This just means that during the summer, my hair can typically be found up in a messy bun or messy ponytail. The keyword is messy, but it’s out of my face and off my neck. Lucky for me, effortless updos are currently on-trend. Congratulations moms everywhere! Our messy ponytails are now considered stylish! But seriously, keeping it easy and simple this summer is what it’s all about. And did I mention healthy? Summertime equals beach time, pool time, and sunshine, but those can be harsh on hair no matter the length, color, or texture.
I am, however, happy to say that I have discovered a few easy ways to spruce up the “mess.” Plus ways to keep my hair healthy and protect it from summer damage. Below are a few tips and tricks you can use to get your locks through the summer.
1. Protect Against Chlorine & Salt Water
Whether you’re at the pool or the beach, salt and chlorine can wreak havoc on your hair. Both can be very drying and if you have color-treated hair, it can cause your color to fade fast. Before your hit the water, there are a few different ways you can protect your hair.
Non-chlorinated water – Before diving into the pool, wet your hair with non-chlorinated water. Think of your hair, and skin for that matter, like a sponge. If you soak it in clean water first, then when you jump into the pool, your “sponge” won’t be able to absorb as much of the chlorinated water. Taking a quick rinse at the pool shower will cover all your bases and keep your skin and hair from drying out.
Olive Oil or Coconut Oil – Coating hair with either olive oil or coconut oil will not only help protect hair from drying out, but it will also add moisture to your hair, keeping it healthy from root to tip.
Leave-In Conditioner – Leave-in conditioner can help tame locks during the hot, humid summer months but it can also help protect your hair from the damaging effects of chlorine and salt. Give your strands a generous coating before hitting the water.
Tip: Not all leave-in conditioners are created equal. Some are better for curly hair while others are more geared towards fine hair. Check the labels and read reviews to help find one perfect for your hair. And just to guarantee that you’re not stuck with a leave-in conditioner you don’t like, click here to see a list of stores with excellent return policies on beauty products.
This leave-in conditioner is not only great for damaged hair but fine hair as well.
2. ACCESSORIZE
Choose accessories that will help your hair this summer! A sunhat or fedora isn’t just for looking stylish and put together, it’s a great way to protect your hair and face from the sun. You can also add scarves and head wraps to give your look a pop of color, keep your hair out of the sun and avoid that windblown look. Lastly, when you wear your hair up make sure you use elastics without metal on them as they can cut into and rip up your hair.
Give your hair a break from the added heat of hairdryers, curling irons, and flat irons. The summer sun is hot enough, no reason to add to it. However, if you must use a hairdryer, a medium to low heat setting is best, and make sure to keep it a safe distance from your hair. The metal coils on the tip of your hairdryer will actually singe your hair if you get too close. Yikes!
Tip: To achieve waves without the heat, try doing a single braid or multiple braids in damp hair before bed. In the morning take out your braids and run your fingers through your hair for effortless waves. Make sure your hair isn’t too wet or it will still be wet in the morning when you let out your braids.
4. REGULAR TRIMS
This may seem like a no-brainer, but don’t forget to get your hair trimmed. It is recommended to go every 8-12 weeks. Keeping your hair trimmed keeps your ends healthy. Healthy ends mean you’ll have less breakage and it will keep them from splitting. Also with regular trims, you’ll avoid having to cut off additional length just to get to the healthy part of your strands because you waited too long between cuts.
5. PERK UP YOUR PONYTAIL
Since I do like to wear my hair up a lot, I’ve found that sometimes a simple braid, twist, or change in my part can make all the difference between hot mess and effortless style. Below I’ve included two of my favorites and how you can achieve these looks.
The Top Knot
This is one of my new favorites, the top knot/bun. Gather hair (wet or dry) up in a ponytail on top of your head and secure it loosely with an elastic. Then twirl your ponytail and wrap that around until you have a loose bun shape. Secure with either bobby pins, another elastic, or my favorite, Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin. They come in different colors to match your hair and are available in regular size as well as mini size. These little wonders can take the place of several bobby pins!
Hint: If you’re not digging having the knot on top of your head, no worries, play around with it until you find a position that you’re comfortable with.
The Braid
My other favorite addition is the braid. Braids are a great way to add some interest to your ponytail or messy bun. My go-to is a french braid across the front of my hair and then add it to my ponytail.
Step #1
To accomplish this I first take a comb and section off the hair I want to braid and pull the rest back in a ponytail so it is out of the way.
Step #2
Then I separate into three sections and begin to braid.
Tip: Braiding the sections over each other or braiding them under each other will create two different-looking braids. In this example, I braided the sections under each other.
Step #3
After each braid, I add another small section of hair to each of the outer sections and continue.
Step #4
Once I reach my temple, I stop adding hair. This is the time where I can look at my braid and if it looks too tight I can gently pull on the sections to add some volume.
Step #5
I will continue braiding my hair to the end and either secure it with a tiny elastic or let it loose.
Step #6
I then remove the elastic that was holding the rest of my hair back and add in the braided section. Secure in either a ponytail or a loose bun and done!
Your turn! What are some of your favorite (easy) ways to deal with your hair when the heat is on? Share them in the comments!
On rare occasions, I’ve been known to toss aside my better judgment and turn the reins of the blog over to my husband Craig. Like that one time he created a holiday gift guide entitled “What Your Husband Really Wants for Christmas” where one of the items was “you, under the tree, wearing nothing but a bow”.
Still shaking my head…
So when he volunteered to do a menswear post for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, I was more than a little suspicious. Most men don’t enjoy online shopping, so him offering up this perfectly curated list? Fishy.
I’m still trying to figure out his angle but I’ve searched for an ulterior motive and so far, have come up empty. So unless he’s secretly embedded something naughty in this post, we should all be good to go.
And by the way, I’m kind of impressed and plan to do a little shopping for him as a reward…maybe something else too, we’ll see. 🙂 (ok, now I’m the naughty one!)
Without further ado, take it away Craig…
I know Alison thinks I have some kind of other motive for my post but it’s not like that, trust me. I saw her stressing this week because she had a post planned for today that didn’t work out because only half of her shipment came from Nordstrom. So I decided to pitch in and help her out. What? A husband can’t help his wife out?
I mean if there just so happen to be some fringe benefits from my wife being less stressed, then so be it. 😉
All of the clothes listed below I’ve put on here because I actually wear them and love them. I feel like they are stylish and also appropriate for my age. Most importantly, I could only have what’s on this list and need nothing else for the entire year…outside of flip flops and swimming trunks…oh yeah, and a hat. Hopefully your husband can do the same.
Tip: Pin this post if you plan to come back to it later for fall shopping ideas.
I love this jacket because it is super lightweight, yet really warm in cold temps. It’s easy to roll up and shove in a back pack or suitcase, without taking up very much room. All around, it’s a great jacket and my go to in the winter.
In Texas, I get a ton of use out of this lighter weight jacket/sweater. Typically, it’s my every day jacket from late September all the way to December and beyond. When it gets too cold or I travel to colder climates, I switch to the puffer jacket. I like to wear t-shirts, even in the winter, so between this and the Patgonia puffer, I’m good.
I wear these jeans all of the time. They work with casual button downs, polos, and t-shirts. I always pair them with the tan belt and boots. I quarter tuck casual button downs and typically half tuck the t-shirts and polos. You can cuff these jeans or wear them normal…all depends on what you like. I usually cuff them.
I have these dress shoes and they look amazing with my gray suit and the belt I linked above. Go ahead and get both. They even work with jeans. Every time I wear them I get compliments.
These aren’t the exact boots that I have, but very similar. If I had to pick another pair, it would be this pair. I wear boots with jeans year round. I spent some extra $ on mine, simply because I wear them all of the time and it was worth it to pay the extra for something that is comfortable and will last. I can always justify the extra dough on a good pair of shoes
I love my Vans. On those super comfortable casual days I like to wear these with relaxed fit jeans and my favorite t-shirt. They are super comfortable and great in the summer with shorts too!
Let’s face it, slim fit jeans cannot happen every day! It is necessary to have a normal pair of relaxed fit jeans. I like to have these to wear with Vans or a pair of athletic shoes. Slim fit jeans, for me, just don’t work for that.
Hey pretties! I wanted to give you all an update today on the difference we’re making with the GYPO Collection line of silk scarves.
But first off, for those of you who are new around here and not familiar with the line, a bit of backstory.
For the past few years, I’ve had several readers and members of the Style Challenge come to me asking for a retail line of accessories that we could easily add to our outfits to create interest. After collecting survey results, it was decided that the first pieces in that line would be printed scarves.
I knew that I wanted them to be high quality materials, made in the US and to support a great cause (more on that later) but still be affordable. I’m just going to be honest, not an easy feat to check all of those boxes!
We were able to commission a female Brooklyn-based artist who created some lovely watercolor florals for us that we put out to a vote. The top three vote getters were then sent off to be printed on silk scarves by a company in San Francisco, CA.
Not one single detail has been overlooked in this line, even our packaging is eco-friendly and comes from a US based woman owned business!
Each scarf arrives in our mailers, beautifully wrapped in tissue with a gift card explaining the ways intention has been woven into the line.
A total of six different scarf styles – one of each pattern in a bandana style and long scarf have been created for the line.

The Impact
Now to THE BEST part – as a result of this labor of love, to date we’ve donated 20 nights (and counting!) of warm meals, safety and restful sleep in a private room to women and children escaping abusive situations at Genesis Women’s Shelter in Dallas. Thank YOU for making a difference!
Shout Outs
It takes a village and I’m SO grateful for the support of those of you who’ve helped spread the word. An extra special shout out goes to Shay Shull for featuring our line in her Friday Favorites on Mix and Match Mama!
I’d also like to take a minute to feature the GYPO Stylists who have generously shared the line with their readers and followers including:
Hey pretties! If you saw my post last Friday, you know that I had to move up the post I had scheduled for today because the links were starting to sell out. So I went against all things I stand for and posted about the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale two days in a row so I could share A Week of Fall Outfits from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale before everything sold out.
I think that’s an important enough reason, don’t you? 🙂
This is always one of my most popular posts of the year. You may not even be thinking about fall outfits yet, but hop over and pin the post so that you have it handy when you are!
Ok, let’s take a break from all of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale madness today and switch gears a little bit to a recent purchase that I’m loving – this tie waist black dress.
It was a last minute purchase right before my parents’ 50th anniversary party a few weeks ago. I wasn’t feeling any of my other dresses so I ran out to Target and grabbed it without even trying it on. I paid $19.99 for it but it’s now on clearance for just $13.98!
Here’s a flat lay of the outfit that I wore to my parents’ anniversary party because I was rushing out the door and forgot to take a selfie on the night of it.
Let’s stop and talk about these sandals for a minute before we press on – I got mine in a Stitch Fix but just discovered them on sale for 50% off here. I can’t tell you how many compliments I get every time I wear these shoes. Because of the block heel, they’re really comfortable and a lot more versatile than you might think.
Today’s outfit is how I paired it up for Friday night church. This little dress is great for so many things, including putting it on with a pair of flip flops and never leaving the house! It’s super comfy and versatile, which I love, love, love. Pair it with heels for a night out or throw it on with a long cardigan and gold sandals like I did for church.
It’s the day of the week at GYPO where we celebrate what makes us feel pretty. Whether it’s a new outfit, hairstyle, or makeup, the I Feel Pretty link up is about anything and everything that makes your life prettier. Even if you’re not a blogger, you can still play along. Just tell me what made you feel pretty this week in the comments.

I’ve been participating in the GYPO Style Challenges for three years now and I’ve loved it. I’ve always loved clothes, but I didn’t know how to put outfits together. My closet is now full of mix-and-match outfits, I have learned how to dress myself, and there is no more stress in figuring out to wear. The private FB group is full of wonderful ladies that build each other up. It’s so fun and is seriously the best group on FB.

Get Your Pretty On has changed my life, seriously. I have always chased what is trendy but found from season to season, that things go out of style and I was wasting money on items that I would only end up wearing a few times. GYPO has enabled me to simplify my closet, helps me make smarter purchasing decisions, and I feel so put together and confident using the outfit formulas that are provided. This program is a GAME CHANGER. I've been following GYPO for a few years now and my only regret is not jumping on board sooner.

Great community of ladies, helping each other look stylish, without breaking the bank, and using much of what you already own.

GYPO challenges have been one of the best things I have done! It had taught me so much more than just creating a closet of clothes that I love but also to have confidence in myself, how to pick and choose colors that work for me instead of against, and had given a wonderful community of Pretties who are so special.
