I’m not going to lie, this is a little outside my comfort zone because I just don’t really wear dresses much. I will dress up for events and maybe a fancy dinner but for my normal, everyday life you’re not really ever going to see me in a dress. With that said though, the little black dress is truly a classic closet staple even for someone who normally doesn’t wear dresses and if you don’t have one that you love I encourage you to find one that’s a heck yes!
Before I get into the ways to style the little black dress (LBD) I want to tell you a little about this particular LBD. It’s sort of Amazon famous because it fits so well and is really budget-friendly at less than $50. This is a gorgeous dress and I love the quality of it. The length is perfect and again, for the price, you cannot beat this deal. This is an all-purpose dress and I’ve worn it for several dozen events and it’s worked great for all of them.
Now it’s time to show you three ways that you can pair up the LBD whether you need some last-minute Valentine’s Day evening out inspiration or you just want to get dressed up for a fun night out!
I did something kind of obvious here and I added some red shoes because it’s Valentine’s Day, but you can definitely also add some pink shoes or any colorful shoe that goes with the black dress. If you’re not feeling the bright heels you can also opt for a classic black heel. If it’s chilly, which for most of us this time of year it is, you could add a faux fur jacket on top to finish off the look.
Let’s say you have to go into the office on Valentine’s Day before date night. All you have to do is throw on a black cardigan and some leopard heels to make it office-appropriate, easy as that! That’s what I love about an LBD. It has so much versatility and you can dress it up or dress it down. You could also wear ankle boots with this look and it would be super cute that way too.
We’re going a little bit edgy with our LBG on this third look. I put on my black ankle boots and my black leather moto jacket. For this particular dress, I love how the feminine lace peeks out at the bottom with a little bit of the toughness from the leather added in. This is a super cute look that you can definitely rock for Valentine’s Day.
What look was your favorite? Be sure to tell me in the comments and tell me also what you’re planning to wear for your Valentine’s Day night.

If you’re bored with winter clothes and ready to start dreaming of cute spring outfits, raise your hand! I’m right there with you. As soon as the calendar turns to February, I start trying to pair up some of my favorite closet staples in new ways with an eye toward spring. To drive away the winter doldrums even more, I’ve been known to add a new trend, so that even if the weather isn’t cooperating yet, I have something fun and new to wear. Recently, I bought a spring 2022 trend that I’ve had my eye on, these cute Veja sneakers. They are the perfect little pick me up! Today I’m sharing five ways to wear Veja sneakers with pieces you may already have in your closet.
Five Veja Sneakers Outfit Formulas
These Outfit Formulas are perfect for the transition between seasons – just add or take away layers as needed. Even if you don’t have these exact pieces, you can follow the Outfit Formulas as written and substitute other pieces in your closet. Want to shop my exact pieces? Just click on each item in the Outfit Formula descriptions below. Hint: I also regularly update my Faves page with everything I’m loving lately. You can also shop there.
Nothing says spring like some pretty pastel jeans! This season I had a bit of rebuilding to do in my denim collection and realized that one major gap I needed to fill was my colored jeans. I had plenty of blue, black and white but not any other colors so I set out to find a few perfect pairs.
The first pair I added to the collection was this pair of tie waist lavender sculpting jeans. The color is so light and pretty that it almost acts as a neutral and can be paired up in so many different ways. It has major versatility! You can dress these jeans up with a crisp white blouse like this tie-back popover and add in a statement necklace and some white block heels to give it a little polish.
For my second look I went with a slightly more dressed down version by swapping the white blouse for this sleeveless top in monochromatic lavender. These embossed white leather tassel loafers give the outfit a laid back preppy vibe.
I’m so excited for this month’s Five Ways to Wear it with my all-time favorite ride or die closet staple item, the striped shirt! If you don’t own one yet put it on the top of your priority list asap! Now I know that not everyone is a fan of the striped shirt and there’s a misconception that not everyone ‘can wear’ this closet staple, but I promise you, there is a striped shirt out there for EVERYONE! Don’t stop looking until you find one that’s a ‘heck yes’ and then enjoy the endless mixing and matching possibilities.
This is one of my favorite ways to pair it up. Just half-tuck your striped top into a pair of black jeans, throw on your favorite denim jacket, and then you can add a pop of color with your shoes, which I love to do. You could pair it up with some leopard shoes if you wanted to do a little bit of pattern mixing or maybe even some metallic sneakers.
This look is essentially head to toe closet staples. I paired up my striped top with a pair of white jeans, threw my chambray button-down on over top of it and added my Adidas sneakers for something super casual, super comfortable. This is a great casual look that you can put together from pieces that you already have in your closet.
For this option, I went with one of my favorite looks from my all-time favorite capsule that I’ve ever created – that’s the French minimalist capsule. I paired up my striped top of a pair of boyfriend jeans, some red heels, and then I threw my moto jacket on top.
So this had practically been my winter uniform, a big baggy sweater, my leather leggings and either some comfy shoes or some cute ankle boots. This time, though, I added in a little bit of detail with the stripes in my sleeves and you can also see them here at the collar. This is a super easy outfit and honestly, it’s like wearing pajamas all day long.
Lastly, I’ve got a dressy way to wear your striped top. Pair it up with a leopard print pencil skirt or leopard print pants, throw on your moto jacket and then you can pair up with any neutral heels. I’m wearing nude heels, but black heels would also work with this. Or you could do a fun pop of color with pink or red.

Call this a rare day in blog land because, wait for it….Alison is wearing a dress! Yes, it happens but it’s kind of like spotting a snow leopard, extremely rare and you’ll have good luck the rest of your life if you see it.
Ok, I made that last part up, but anyway. There’s usually one cornerstone piece that I build every single capsule wardrobe around. For the sake of a better term, let’s call it my muse. For the Style Challenges Winter 2019 Work Wear Capsule, this black watch plaid sheath dress was definitely my muse. As soon as I laid eyes on it, I knew it would be the first piece to make it into the capsule.
I ran out to my local J. Crew Factory to buy it and lo and behold, it fit and looked just as good as I could’ve possibly hoped. It’s such a classic staple item too both in lines (sheath dresses NEVER go out of style) and in color/pattern (plaid is a winter constant). Totally worth adding to your closet!
I challenged myself to come up with several ways to wear it since one of the tenets of the Style Challenges program is that a piece has to be paired up in at least 4-5 different ways to make it on the shopping list. This one stretched me a bit but I was able to come up with these four pairings.
I’ve listed the links to the items below, however, there are some that are sold out or the items are from my closet so I’ve listed similar ones.
For this outfit formula, I paired up the black watch plaid sheath dress with a statement necklace and leopard heels for some fun pattern mixing. This outfit formula stands on it’s own perfectly fine or you can add in a faux fur jacket for holiday parties!
My second pairing is for you ladies in colder climates! I understand that bare arms and legs aren’t feasible in most of the US this time of year. In that case, layer up your dress with a cozy black turtleneck and tights then add ankle boots and a leather jacket!
Next up, we have an office look that I positively ADORE! When I worked in corporate America, this outfit would’ve been totally me. Just add a black cardigan, long pendant necklace and leopard or black heels!
Lastly, you can never go wrong with a white button-down. Layer your dress over one and add a statement necklace over the collar. Finish it out with tights and ankle boots or skip the tights and add heels!
Do you struggle to put outfits together? Are you stuck in a yoga pants rut? Not sure if you can make the latest trends work for you? You’re in the right place!

I’ve been participating in the GYPO Style Challenges for three years now and I’ve loved it. I’ve always loved clothes, but I didn’t know how to put outfits together. My closet is now full of mix-and-match outfits, I have learned how to dress myself, and there is no more stress in figuring out to wear. The private FB group is full of wonderful ladies that build each other up. It’s so fun and is seriously the best group on FB.

Get Your Pretty On has changed my life, seriously. I have always chased what is trendy but found from season to season, that things go out of style and I was wasting money on items that I would only end up wearing a few times. GYPO has enabled me to simplify my closet, helps me make smarter purchasing decisions, and I feel so put together and confident using the outfit formulas that are provided. This program is a GAME CHANGER. I've been following GYPO for a few years now and my only regret is not jumping on board sooner.

Great community of ladies, helping each other look stylish, without breaking the bank, and using much of what you already own.

GYPO challenges have been one of the best things I have done! It had taught me so much more than just creating a closet of clothes that I love but also to have confidence in myself, how to pick and choose colors that work for me instead of against, and had given a wonderful community of Pretties who are so special.
