Fall In Love With Layers

Fall In Love With Layers

This Post Sponsored by Walmart

One of my favorite things about fall, aside from the fall scented candles, are the layers. I love adding layers to my outfits and this time of year there are so many options to choose from. Since it’s not truly cold, at least for me yet, I’ll wait until we get a little closer to winter to add in the scarves and hats so for now, I’m going to focus on toppers. Some of my favorite toppers include closet staples like the denim jacket, the utility jacket, and the vest. Even though those three items seem pretty straightforward, there are enough differences in each to justify having a few different versions if you want.

When it comes to a denim jacket and versatility I always recommend a medium wash. I promise you’ll get the most bang for your buck with that wash. As for a great utility jacket, the standard color is olive green because it goes with everything however gray and brown are also wonderful options. Now we have the vest where the options are aplenty! You’ve got every color imaginable plus there are puffer vests, lightweight fleece vests, quilted vests, and more. My suggestion is to pick what will work best for your lifestyle. You can definitely have fun with color on this one so pick one that makes you glow!

Layering Trends

Now, if you want to incorporate some trends this fall, the shirt-jacket, or shacket as it’s sometimes called, is very on-trend. This is an item I wouldn’t break the budget on just because it is considered a fall trend and you never know how long they are going to stick around. The last layer I’m styling today is the blazer. While the boyfriend-style blazer is specifically on-trend, the blazer is a classic that you can wear year after year. Okay I lied, I’m also styling a tried and true classic, the cardigan.

It’s true, there are so many fun options for fall it’s hard to decide. Recently I partnered up with Walmart to check out some of the new items they have out this season and they have some great layering pieces. Below I’ve put together three different fall looks and the only you need to decide is ‘this or that.’ Realistically all the layers are pretty interchangeable which makes them all very versatile and the perfect addition to your closet if you don’t have them in there already.

STYLE YOUR BUDGET – Outfit Formulas® Fall 2021 Capsule Wardrobe

STYLE YOUR BUDGET – Outfit Formulas® Fall 2021 Capsule Wardrobe

When it comes to summer outfits, creating extra interest takes work and creativity because the last thing we want is something that looks great, but isn’t functional. For instance, layers and summer do not mix. However, layers and fall do mix and they mix ever so beautifully! The options are endless from a denim jacket to a cardigan or maybe even an olive utility jacket. I love seeing how many different looks I can create just by swapping out the toppers. That’s partly why I created Outfit Formulas®. It was my way to see how many different looks I could create using a handful of pieces including closet staples and a few trends and translate all that into easy-to-follow formulas.

For this month’s Style Your Budget I pulled a look from the Outfit Formulas® Fall 2021 Capsule Wardrobe. What I love about this look is that it truly has something for everyone. Some may be able to shop this entire look from their closet, which I always recommend first, because it does consist of some excellent closet staples. But if you look closely, this look also represents items that are totally on-trend for fall. Like the rust-colored cardigan, while a cardigan is a closet must-have, rust is a really popular color this fall. And that’s where this post comes in handy. It can help you fill in any of the gaps you may have by providing different options and price points so you can shop where you want and spend what you want. That’s what I call a win-win. Now let’s check out this month’s SYB formula, shall we?

Five Fabulous Outfit Formulas® for Fall

Five Fabulous Outfit Formulas® for Fall

I say this every year but I am SO excited for fall! Even though it’s ridiculously hot in Texas, I’m so over my summer clothes. That’s why I’m trying to incorporate fall into my outfits as much as I can. One of my favorite parts of fall is putting together the Outfit Formulas® Fall 2021 Wardrobe Capsule and I have to say, this season was so much fun! It has a great closet staple base with some fun and wearable trends mixed in.

Whether you’ve been looking at your favorite retailer online or in-store, it may seem like an endless mix of trends that aren’t very wearable but I assure you, there are some out there. That’s why I love doing this capsule. It’s an easy way to update your closet without spending a ton of money. In fact, women actually say they save money using Outfit Formulas® because they’re able to shop for fewer things and pair them up in more ways.

Below are five of my favorite outfit formulas® for fall. You can download my free guide HERE which includes the full shopping list for these looks. These looks plus 29 more are all part of the Outfit Formulas® Fall 2021 Wardrobe Capsule. Now let’s get dressed for fall!

Outfit Formula #1

Black Blazer + Striped Top + Boyfriend Jeans + Leopard Shoes

A black blazer is paired with a striped top, and distressed medium wash jeans with leopard mules.

I am loving this boyfriend blazer! It’s so comfortable and I love the relaxed feel of it. I’m wearing one of the many striped tops from my closet with the distressed boyfriend jeans from above. Unfortunately, there are limited sizes left in the H&M boyfriend jeans shown. You may need to check in-store or you can try this similar pair. My leopard mules have been in my closet forever and I finished off this look with the accessories from above.

Outfit Formula #2

Denim Jacket + Printed Top + Colored Bottoms + Taupe Ankle Boots

My denim jacket is another closet staple that I use all year long. Seriously, I always have my denim jacket with me! My jacket is from J.Crew Factory from years ago. They still have limited sizes in stock but this jacket is very similar. The floral top from Old Navy was so popular that it sold out but there are other prints available and other options in the free fall download HERE. The colored denim pants are the same ones pictured above and my taupe booties are a closet staple from years past.

Outfit Formula #3

Neutral Cardigan + Printed Dress + Taupe Ankle Boots

While I’m not totally a dress person, this long dress from Old Navy is the perfect summer-to-fall transition piece. I added the shorter cardigan for those chilly days and rounded out this fall look with my favorite closet-shopped taupe booties. Unfortunately, the H&M cardigan is sold out. You may be able to find it in-store but this one is another great option.

Outfit Formula #4

Colored Cardigan + Chambray Top + Black Bottoms + Leopard Shoes

Rust is a color you’ll see everywhere this fall. I found this beautiful rust cardigan from Old Navy and paired it up with a classic, my chambray shirt. While this look would work with some dark wash denim, I decided to style it with my black jeans and finish off with my favorite pop of print, my leopard mules.

Outfit Formula #5

Printed Vest + White Top + Medium Wash Jeans + Black Shoes

A houndstooth vest is paired with a white button-down shirt and medium wash jeans with black boots.

Yes, here it is! The houndstooth sweater vest. If you’ve been online or checked out Pinterest you’ve seen this all over and it IS part of the fall capsule wardrobe. I styled it with a white button-down from my closet, my medium wash distressed jeans and new to my closet this year are the black, chunky chain mules pictured above. If you’re not loving the sweater vest, feel free to skip it or sub in a long sleeve sweater.

Five Summer Must-Haves Under $30

Five Summer Must-Haves Under $30

by Sarah Gross, The Modern Mamanista

You might say I’ve always been a bargain hunter. So much so that my skills earned me the nickname “Sarah Shopper” from my family. My favorite pastime as a child was sitting with my dad and pulling the ads from his Sunday paper and circling all the things I wanted to buy when I grew up. Now that I’m grown up I still like to keep to a budget and there are some great, easy-breezy summer items that won’t break the bank. Here are five of my favorite summer must-haves that won’t break the bank! In fact, all five are $30 or less so there’s budget left over to pick up your favorite iced coffee or margarita!

1. MITILLY Sleeveless Button-Down Pocket Dress

This dress is a comfortable knit and feels fun for summer but not too short or too young at age 44! The easy cut and fit make it perfect to wear to a casual patio dinner with my family or to throw on to run errands around town!

2. CUPSHE Floral Print High-Waisted Two-Piece Swimsuit

Post kids, swimsuits are a struggle to find. I want one that gives enough lift and coverage for my mid-40s and after two kids. However, I also want it to feel fun for summer and show off those areas I work hard to tone and maintain at the gym and trying to eat healthily. This Cupshe High-Waisted Bikini has a halter top which keeps everything secure and the bottoms have a bit more coverage in the back so I can still be active with my family and not worry about what’s hanging out of my suit! Fits true to size; I’m 5’8”, 130 pounds, and typically a size 4/small. I’m wearing a small in the picture.

3. Amoretu Printed Geometric Tunic Shift Dress

I bought this printed geometric shift dress for vacation since sometimes evenings at the beach can be a bit cool. I love the fun print! Plus it’s easy to accessorize with simple jewelry, a pair of neutral wedges, and let the dress do the talking! I get so many compliments every time I wear this! This dress fits true to size, I’m wearing a small in the picture.

4. PRETTYGARDEN Plaid Sleeveless Ruffle Sundress with Pockets

There’s just something about gingham that feels like summer here in the south! Dresses are such an easy way to feel pulled together and stay cool in the summer. I love to pair this classic black and white gingham sundress with cognac sandals or add a fun pop of color with shoes and statement earrings. This dress fits true to size and I’m wearing a small.

5. CUPSHE V Neck Ruffled One-Piece Swimsuit

I love the ruffle detailing on this Cupshe one-piece swimsuit. Somehow the striped pattern and unexpected detailing keep this one-piece feeling young and playful while still providing a little more coverage on the beach. It comes in other striped color combinations but it also comes in solid colors and floral combinations which you can find HERE. Fits true to size and I’m wearing a small in the picture.

Your turn! What summer piece is your favorite?

Meet Sarah

This Modern Mamanista started as a young fashionista when my mom bought me a Fashion Plates drawing set and Superstar Barbie Fashion Face for my birthday in the ’80s. For work, I gravitate towards effortless chic and look for great jewelry and shoes to make my outfit. I’d like to think shoes, not diamonds, are really a girl’s best friend. For the weekends, I embrace my girl next door style with more casual-chic, comfortable pieces that take me from errands to kid activities and family dinners at our favorite restaurant or a concert at our neighborhood plaza. No lounge pants and slippers or mom jeans for this mom!

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Featuring Ten Fall Trends

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Featuring Ten Fall Trends

It’s both crazy and exciting to already be thinking about fall even though in TX, that’s months away. Still, I’ve had about enough of the heat to already be dreaming of the cool fall air. We’ve already gone over some of the great closet staple deals you can find at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in last week’s post, which you can find HERE. But now the NAS is officially open to everyone and I’m going to share some of the fall trends that are now available. There are some that I can’t wait to try and to be honest, some I’m not sure about. When it comes to fall, I’m more of a classic kind of girl. However, as I always say, I shouldn’t judge until I’ve tried it on and decided first hand if it’s a heck yes or a no. I’ll leave that for you to decide as well.

This fall, I’m seeing embellished and textured tops, sweater vests, chunky boots, lots of chain link jewelry and embellishments, as well as plaid flannel shirts, and shirts thick enough to be jackets, the shacket if you will. Below are some of the trend pieces I found at the NAS. What other trends are you seeing? What trends do you like and what are you happy to leave behind?

2. Shirt + Jacket = Shacket
